THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
JANUARY 4, 2015
Dear people of St. Mary’s:
Merry and blessed Christmas! Blessed new calendar year of 2015! Today is the great high feast of Epiphany! Jesus Christ
is Lord! I will include a poem that a priest friend of mine from Los Angeles sent to me for Christmas: “We no longer
have to seek a beloved – God beyond the stars ->because of Christmas – because the Word became flesh – God is near >and those who welcome this child – with wonder – hear in the quiet night – God’s gentle word of love – Amen.
What did Pope Francis Really Say?
The mainstream media has been misinterpreting, distorting and misunderstanding our new Pope Francis. This includes
his most recent words to the Roman Curia. Typically, this Christmas speech has been an unofficial state of the Church
speech (at least that’s how Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI treated these gatherings). These have
usually been moving speeches in the past and this one by Pope Francis is no exception. The Roman Curia includes all of
the deacons, priests, and bishops who work at the various offices of the Vatican. I saw some very disturbing headlines
and phrases in the mainstream media. As always, with a calm head, let’s take a look at what he really said: ''“The Curia is
always required to better itself and to grow in communion, sanctity and wisdom to fully accomplish its mission.
However, like any body, it is exposed to sickness, malfunction and infirmity. … I would like to mention some of these
illnesses that we encounter most frequently in our life in the Curia. They are illnesses and temptations that weaken our
service to the Lord," (Pope Francis: Address to the Roman Curia, December 22, 2014)
Pope Francis went on to enumerate 15 Curial sicknesses/temptations which I will list here and if you like we can reflect
on them in the future: 1. the sickness of considering oneself 'immortal', 'immune' or 'indispensable', 2. 'Martha-ism', or
excessive industriousness; 3. the sickness of mental and spiritual hardening: 4. the ailment of excessive planning and
functionalism: 5. the sickness of poor coordination, 6. ‘Spiritual Alzheimer's disease,’ 7. the ailment of rivalry and
vainglory, .8.’existential schizophrenia,’ 9. the sickness of ‘chatter,’ grumbling and gossip, 10. the sickness of deifying
leaders, 11.the disease of indifference towards others 12. the illness of the funereal face: 13. the disease of accumulation,
14. the ailment of closed circles, 15. the disease of worldly profit and exhibitionism:
After listing these ailments, Pope Francis continued, “We are therefore required, at this Christmas time and in all the
time of our service and our existence – to live 'speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is
the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,
when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love…I once read that priests are
like airplanes: they only make the news when they crash, but there are many that fly. Many criticize them and few pray
for them…It is a very nice phrase, but also very true, as it expresses the importance and the delicacy of our priestly
service, and how much harm just one priest who falls may cause to the whole body of the Church”. (Pope Francis:
Address to the Roman Curia, December 22, 2014) – These reflections are not only helpful for the Roman Curia but for
us as well.
Year of Consecrated Life: A Life Dedicated to Service and Prayer
“During 2015, the Year of Consecrated Life, the Bishops of California join with Pope Francis and the worldwide
Catholic Church in honoring the women and men who fulfill their baptismal vocation by formally consecrating their lives
to service, prayer and care for others. The sisters, brothers and priests in contemplative communities, apostolic institutes
and religious orders are a gift to us all. They are a living example of discipleship by their commitment to Christ, holiness,
and compassionate service to others. They daily bring the joyful Gospel message to our world. Their fidelity to the vows
of poverty, chastity and obedience enriches the life of the Church. Various religious orders of women and men have long
graced California with their unique charisms and courageous missionary zeal. With a heartfelt devotion to the people of
California and with a particular concern for the poor and immigrants, they have built schools, hospitals, social services,
missions, children's homes and other institutions to address the needs of our communities. In doing so, they helped build
the virtue and vitality of the Golden State.” (California Catholic Conference of Bishops, Statement on Dec. 5, 2014)
You and I are called to form the holy family of the Church… living through Christ, for Christ, in Christ, with Christ…
that’s the Christmas message that’s meant to be lived every day!

¡Feliz y bendita Navidad! ¡Feliz año nuevo civil de 2015! ¡Hoy es la gran fiesta de la Epifanía! ¡Jesucristo es el Señor! Voy a

¿Que Realmente dijo el Papa Francisco?
¿Qué es lo que el Papa Francisco ha dicho realmente? Los medios de comunicación han malinterpretado, distorsionado y
malentendido nuestro nuevo Papa Francisco. Esto incluye sus más recientes palabras a la Curia Romana. Normalmente, esta
Navidad ha sido un discurso no-oficial estado de la Iglesia (al menos así es como el Papa San Juan Pablo II y el Papa Emérito
Benedicto XVI han tratado estos encuentros). Estos generalmente se han sido los discursos fuertes en el pasado y el discurso
presente por el Papa Francisco no es una excepción. La Curia Romana incluye todos los diáconos, sacerdotes y obispos que

curiales
1-La enfermedad de ‘sentirse inmortal,’ 2- La enfermedad de ‘martalismo’ (Marta) 3- La enfermedad del
endurecimiento mental y espiritual, 4 - Planificar como contador. 5 - no cooperación, 6 - La enfermedad de
alzheimer espiritual, 7 - La enfermedad de la rivalidad y la vanagloria: 8 - La enfermedad de la esquizofrenia
existencial: 9 - 'La enfermedad de las habladurías, 10 - La enfermedad de divinizar a los jefes, 11 - La enfermedad de
la indiferencia hacia los demás, 12 - La enfermedad de la cara de funeral, 13 - La enfermedad de la acumulación, 14 "La enfermedad de los círculos cerrados, 15 - La enfermedad de la ganancia mundana.
'Por lo tanto… estamos llamados - en este tiempo de Navidad y todo el tiempo de nuestro servicio y de nuestra existencia - a
vivir según la verdad en el amor, intentando crecer en todo hacia aquel que es la cabeza, Cristo, de quien todo el cuerpo, bien
concertado, mediante la colaboración de todas las coyunturas, según la energía propia de cada miembro, recibe fuerza para
crecer de manera de edificarse a sí mismo en la caridad'…Una vez leí – que los sacerdotes son como los aviones, son noticia
sólo cuando se caen, pero hay tantos que vuelan. Muchos los critican y pocos rezan por ellos'. Es una frase muy simpática,
pero también muy cierta, ya que describe la importancia y la delicadeza de nuestro servicio sacerdotal y cuánto daño puede
causar un sacerdote que ‘cae’ a todo el cuerpo de la Iglesia.” (Papa Francisco: Discurso a la Curia romana, 22 de Diciembre,
2014) - Estas reflexiones no son sólo útiles para la Curia Romana, sino también para nosotros.
Año de la vida consagrada: una vida dedicada al servicio y a la oración
“Los Obispos de California rinden homenaje a los que viven una vida consagrada durante el 2015, el Año de la Vida Consagrada,
los Obispos de California se unen al Papa Francisco y a la Iglesia católica a nivel mundial para rendir homenaje a las mujeres y
a los hombres que cumplen con su vocación bautismal al consagrar formalmente sus vidas al servicio, a la oración y al cuidado
de los demás. Las hermanas, hermanos y sacerdotes de las comunidades contemplativas, de los institutos apostólicos y de las
órdenes religiosas son un don para todos nosotros. Ellos son un ejemplo viviente del discipulado por medio de su
compromiso con Cristo, su santidad, y servicio compasivo para con los demás. Ellos ofrecen diariamente el mensaje gozoso
del Evangelio a nuestro mundo. Su fidelidad a los votos de pobreza, castidad y obediencia enriquecen la vida de la Iglesia.
Distintas órdenes religiosas de hombres y mujeres han honrado por mucho tiempo a California con sus singulares carismas y
su valeroso celo apostólico. Con su sincera devoción para con el pueblo de California y con una inquietud particular por los
pobres e inmigrantes, han construido escuelas, hospitales, servicios sociales, misiones, hogares para niños, y otras instituciones
para solventar las necesidades de nuestras comunidades. Al hacer esto, han ayudado a desarrollar la virtud y la vitalidad del

Uds. y yo somos llamados a formar la familia santa de la Iglesia… viviendo por Cristo, con Cristo, en Cristo, y para Cristo…

Leader: During these days of the Christmas season, we keep this feast of Epiphany,
celebrating the manifestation of Christ to the Magi, to John the Baptist at the river
Jordan, and to the disciples at the wedding of Cana. Today Christ is manifest to us!
Today, this home is a holy place because we invite Him here.
Read one of the following or all of the following Scriptures: Matthew 2:1-12, Matthew 3:13-17, John 2:1-11 After the reading proclaim: “The Gospel of the Lord”
All respond: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Everyone then processes from room to room sprinkling holy water throughout the house. Then after the procession
through the house, the family returns to the original gathering spot to pray the Lord’s prayer (the Our Father).
Leader: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every
nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the
light of Christ that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Guía: Durante estos días de la temporada Navideña, guardamos esta fiesta de la Epifanía,
celebrando la manifestación de Cristo a los tres reyes magos, a Juan el Bautista en el río Jordán y a
los discípulos en la boda de Caná. ¡Hoy Cristo se nos manifiesta! Hoy, este lugar (esta casa) es un

We are in desperate need of Altar Servers for all
masses. The Altar Server Ministry is a wonderful
opportunity to "share one's time and talent" and
grow in the Catholic faith. We are currently
looking to add new members to this wonderful
ministry. Any boy or girl who has received their
first communion can become an altar server. For

12th Annual West Coast
Biblical Studies Conference
The 12th Annual West Coast Biblical Studies
Conference will be hosted at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Parish in San Diego on Jan. 9-10, 2015. Featuring
Scott Hahn, Brant Pitre, Michael Barber, and John
Kincaid, the conference will focus on The Mystery of
Christ in the Church: A Study of Ephesians.
Registration is $30 by Jan. 1 at www.jpcatholic.com,
and space is limited.

The Jericho Walk represents the Old Testament
story of Joshua marching around the city of
Jericho blowing trumpets. The seventh time
around the trumpets blew the loudest and the
walls came tumbling down. (Joshua 6:3-5ab) With
this peaceful prayer exercise, we pray the Lord
might stop the efforts of those who might
facilitate sinful practices and attitudes:
contraception, fornication, abortion, adultery, and
homosexual acts. Beginning Monday January 12
at 4PM at 1461 S. 4th Street, on the sidewalk of
the mini-mall near Exotic Thai – we will walk
praying for the end of abortion and the
conversion of those who work for Planned
Parenthood. The Jericho Walk will end on
Sunday January 18. Beginning at 2PM on Sunday
January 19, we will walk around the Mini-mall 7
times and conclude with trumpet blasts, shouts to
God for joy and victory and praises to God. This
will be a peaceful, prayerful, nonviolent protest
walk – prayer to overcome abortion and prayer
for those who facilitate the evils of abortion and
the mission of Planned Parenthood.

La Caminata de Jericó representa en el Antiguo
Testamento la historia de Josué marchando
alrededor de la ciudad de Jericó tocando
trompetas. La séptima vez las trompetas
soplaron muy fuertes y las paredes se
derrumbaron. (Josué 6:3-5ab) Con este ejercicio
de oración pacifica, oramos para que el Señor le
ponga un alto a todos los que se esfuerzan para
que se faciliten las prácticas y actitudes
pecaminosas: Anticoncepción,
fornicación,
aborto,
adulterio,
y
actos
homosexuales. Comenzando el lunes, 12 de
enero a las 4PM en 1461 S. 4th Street, en la
banqueta enseguida de Exotic Thai –
caminaremos una vez al día a las 4PM alrededor
del “mini-mall” orando por el fin de los abortos y
por la conversión de todos aquellos que trabajan
para la Planned Parenthood. La Caminata de
Jericó terminará el domingo, 18 de
enero. Comenzando a las 2PM el domingo 19 de
enero, caminaremos alrededor del “mini-mall”
siete veces y concluiremos con toques de
trompetas, gritos a Dios de alegría, de victoria y
alabando a Dios. Esto será una caminata de
protesta pacífica, no violenta y de oración –
oración para terminar con los abortos y oración
por todos aquellos que facilitan los males del
aborto y la misión de la Planned Parenthood.
