FROM THE KINDERGARTEN TEAM Ms. Corn Ms. Fox Ms. Sanders Ms. Rebein Ms. Smith Remember when you were a child and reading was like stepping into an adventure written just for you? When we read with children, every story is an exciting and fun learning opportunity that feeds their minds and opens up the world around them. Key research indicates that the number of books in a child’s home is a major predictor of future reading ability, and reading with a young child sets the stage for future success. Research shows that children learn more in their first eight years than they do the rest of their lives. This is a critical time to teach them to be readers and writers. It is very powerful when a parent sits down and reads a story, allowing children to paint pictures in their minds about what is happening. Nursery rhymes help teach children awareness of language. They can be used to teach musical awareness and help with memory. Kindergarten students should focus on language activities at school and at home that develop listening and expressive skills, which include the following: Listening to stories and poems Telling and retelling stories Reading and reciting nursery rhymes Singing and chanting Discussing word meanings, ideas, books, and experiences Making predictions about words and stories Children should be read to daily using books with predictable patterns, repetition, and rhyme. A lot of traditional rhymes, such as Jack and Jill and Humpty Dumpty are repetitious and allow children to memorize basic structures and patterns in language. Some websites that are good tools for children and parents include the following: bemboszoo.com funschool.kaboose.com pbskids.org childfun.com familyfun.go.com kidsdomain.com funbrain.com Recuerdas cuando eras un niño/a y leer era como una aventura para usted?
