SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is a term we rarely use within Bata. It has always been in our DNA and has driven our choices to set up manufacturing in developing countries, invest in our employees, support communities and to preserve the environment. This long-term consideration of our social and environmental impacts is woven into the many day-to-day conversations we have about our business. Few decisions are taken without us first understanding and discussing how they will affect our environment, our employees, business partners or communities. This belief continues to be fundamental and drives our multi-local approach to business where Bata is known throughout the world as a local company. Bata’s first Sustainability Review has been written to help our employees and other stakeholders become more aware of how Bata’s heritage has shaped its principles and how it is increasingly shaping our future. It covers our sustainability journey up to 2013 and includes illustrations from across our business. Bata’s success has always come from our ability to think long-term. As far back as the beginning of the 20th century, this vision enabled Bata to enter and create new markets, setting up Bata villages to support employees, investing in local communities and developing local sourcing options for materials to make our shoes. Like all of us at Bata, I am immensely proud of this heritage and am equally proud of our continuing ability to adapt and innovate. Although the world of today would be unrecognisable to those who worked for Bata back in 1894, many of the values and principles on which our company was built are every bit as relevant now as they were then. Our heritage of respect, vision, responsibility and entrepreneurship provides us with a uniquely solid platform which will help us continue to grow and thrive over the next hundred years. For me this is a hugely exciting prospect. Bata’s values, combined with our long-term approach to business, help make the company resilient to many modern day challenges. They help us to recruit and retain talented and motivated people, reduce our energy costs, establish our brand as a leader in growing markets and help us to achieve manufacturing excellence wherever we make our shoes. It is fitting therefore that this first report explains our steps to make shoes accessible across the world, what we have learnt from this journey and how the experience we have gained along the way provides opportunities for us to grow our company to make a positive impact on an ever greater scale. Interestingly, sustainability is a term we rarely use within Bata. Sustainability is not seen as a separate topic for the very reason that it is intrinsically part of the many day-to-day conversations we have about our business. Few decisions are taken without us first understanding and discussing how they will affect our environment, our employees, business partners or communities. Of course, if you want to be in the market for the long-term, you cannot set yourself apart from the people you want to sell to. This belief continues to be fundamental and drives our multi-local approach to business where Bata is known throughout the world as a local company. This is just one of so many fascinating aspects of our organisation which, while being the world’s largest footwear retailer, feels a small, intimate and agile place to work in. A major part of our heritage is the development of Bata as a large international brand. Safeguarding and developing this brand brings new responsibilities. Our vision is that every shoe we sell should be designed by us and every aspect of its manufacture and sales be carefully controlled. This brings both increased responsibilities and also new opportunities to design, manufacture, sell and recycle in ways that respect our environment and our values. The global challenges relating to sustainability will require us to think differently and adapt, as we have in the past so that we continue to earn our reputation of being one of the most respected global footwear companies. I feel immensely proud of Bata’s rich heritage. The publication of this Review is an important milestone and I hope that you enjoy reading it. I also hope that it inspires each one of us to find our own role in this journey, so that we pass on an even more successful, exciting and responsible company to future generations. We have second or third generation workers and they ask us to recruit their sons and daughters. This is common. This is something very different from what would typically be seen in footwear manufacturing. It is something that makes Bata very different from many other organisations.” Sanjay Kanth, VP Manufacturing Bata India “When the Sophia shoe was launched in Malawi in the 1970s quite extensive research was conducted and it was developed to meet the demands of the market. Over the years people in Malawi have actually adopted it as their own shoe.” George Mulenga, Company Manager Bata Malawi “Bata has a very different structure from many companies. It is more international than global and has a very flat structure that offers plenty of opportunities to make amazing careers.” Jorge Carbajal, President Bata Emerging Markets “Caring about the communities living where we have our business activities is extremely important. THAN YOU MIGHT THINK! 23 WHO NEEDS SHOES? ¿QUIÉN NECESITA CALZADO? 24 ONE IN TEN PEOPLE IN MALAWI BUY A SINGLE BRAND OF SHOE EACH YEAR – THE SOFIA. In Malawi, Bata set out to create ‘the people’s shoe’. It had to be strong, protective, comfortable, easily washable and affordable. The Sofia was developed with the local farmers, children, mothers and business people in mind. Moulded from PVC, the Sofia was launched in 1975, selling for less than one US dollar. It was fashionable, washable and available in one colour – black. Today, Bata sells up to 1.5 million pairs of shoes per year in Malawi. We also employ more than 200 people in our local factory, wholesale and retail operations. Although our range extends to over 400 different styles, the Sofia, based on the original 1975 model, remains our best seller and has become an icon, recognised and worn by most of the population. Over the years we have tried to change the Sofia, offering slightly evolved designs and different colours – but each time we are told that the old shoe is the one and only Sofia. It is still only available in black! The people of Malawi do not throw their pairs of Sofia shoes away when they wear out, but instead return them to us for recycling where they are washed, recycled and ground down to make new shoes. Astonishingly, some 600 tonnes of Sofia shoes are returned each year to be reused in our moulding machines. Such is the scale of the recycling operation, it provides an income to over 5,000 entrepreneurs who go on foot, on bicycles and in ox carts to collect the shoes and return them to one of twelve collection centres set up throughout the country. Bata pays USD 0.45 for each pair of shoes returned for recycling. This money is distributed to the customer donating the shoes as well as the shoe collectors, many of whom have no other sources of income. Last year, almost one million Sofia shoes were collected and recycled in this way. As unbelievable as it sounds, this means that almost every pair of Sofia shoes sold ends up being re-moulded into a new pair to be worn by someone else! “This product caters for the majority of the population here. When it is wet and muddy, all you have to do is simply wash it and put it back on. It looks great too. This is a shoe where even if you changed one single stitch on it, people would know. It has not changed at all since 1975.” George Mulenga, Company Manager, Bata Malawi. She knows, for instance, that the Cholita women of La Paz in Bolivia have very beautiful but also unusually wide feet. She understands the need to take a popular style of shoe and make it look equally stylish on the feet of our sisters in South America. This is her story… “Bata respects the dress code of the traditional Bolivian woman. We appreciate, for example, that their distinctive style makes a powerful and elaborate statement of native pride, stoicism and economic muscle. The Cholita’s meticulous attention to detail – from the jaunty angle of her bowler hat to the multi-layered skirt and elaborately fringed shawl – typifies an immaculate sense of identity; an identity shaped not only by tradition but also the style passed down through her family. “Bata has designed a special range of shoes for the Cholita under the brand Manaco. The shoes are manufactured in our Bata factory using quality leather – because we recognise that our discerning customer is looking for a shoe that offers high quality and durability. Furthermore, we know that the Cholitas respect the importance of making a good investment in a brand that they value. The Cholitas range includes shoes in different styles and colours because we know how important it is to coordinate the shoes to complete the costume. Using specially-made shoe forms – in three different widths (the widest being the most popular) – we ensure that our shoes are designed for comfort as much as for style. We like to believe that our knowledge of making and retailing shoes in Bolivia makes our brand – as the Cholitas themselves – stand out from the crowd.” HACER CALZADO ACCESIBLE 32 33 34 35 MAKING SHOES ACCESSIBLE HACER CALZADO ACCESIBLE THE APARAJITAS – BANGLADESHI WOMEN WHO NEVER GIVE UP 36 Employment opportunities for women living in rural Bangladesh areas are limited. What is more, these rural communities often do not have easy access to basic products such as shoes. To help address these issues, Bata developed in 2005 with CARE, an established humanitarian organisation dedicated to fighting poverty, the Rural Sales Program (RSP). The two organisations piloted a sales model where destitute women in rural communities become entrepreneurs and earn a living from selling affordable flip-flops manufactured in Bata owned factories in Bangladesh. These women, known as Aparajitas – the Bengali name for a ‘woman who never gives up’ – earn a good commission from their sales allowing them to have an average income of at least USD 80 per month. The results and the success of the RSP have been exceptional. Other multinational and domestic companies have joined the venture since, enabling the expansion of products and market coverage, while providing the rural poor with a dignified source of income, and advancing important development goals such as gender equality and sustainable livelihood creation. The RSP grew rapidly from just 49 Aparajitas in 2005 to almost 3000 in 2013. By 2015, Bata plans to have 11,000 Aparajitas, empowering even more underprivileged women through income and employment. Economic empowerment via access to income improves the welfare of women and their families in Bangladesh who are among the poorest people in the world, often living on less than USD 2 a day. The Rural Sales Program offers a sustainable source of income, lifting thousands of women out of poverty and offering them a dignified life. CASI EL 60% MENOS DE ENERGÍA SUSTAINABLE IN OUR EXCELLENCE ELIMINATING WASTE ALMOST 60% ENERGY SAVING Bata has had an active environmental programme since the early 1980s. Today, we continue to aspire to sustainable excellence, working closely with our employees to identify further opportunities to save energy, reduce our carbon footprint, use less water and generate less waste. IN ALL OUR MANUFACTURING FACILITIES REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT We set ourselves a goal of becoming a zero waste manufacturing company, eliminating all waste to landfill. One of the ways of reducing waste is to prevent its generation in the first place, through improved production techniques. Much of our production involves injection moulding where plastic pellets are fed into a moulding machine where they are heated and shaped. By modifying these machines to pre-heat the pellets before they enter the machine, we have been able to increase productivity in our factories by about 15% and also significantly reduce energy consumption. Above all, the main benefit has been an increase in quality which means less rejects and less waste. By installing modern, efficient servo motors on our hydraulic injection machines, we have been able to save almost 60% of the energy needed to mould our shoes. A typical machine that used to draw 100 kW now only uses between 40 to 45 kW. The project has been subsequently rolled out to 42 of our 61 machines worldwide, saving over 3,000,000 kWh per year which corresponds to nearly 2,500 tonnes of CO2. VALORIZACIÓN DE RESIDUOS RECICLADOS ELIMINACIÓN GRADUAL DE PLASTIFICANTES FACTORIES EN NUESTRAS FÁBRICAS REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS RAINWATER HARVESTING UPCYCLING WASTE PHASING OUT PLASTICISERS NATURAL LIGHTING IN PURWAKARTA, INDONESIA HARVESTING TWO MILLION LITRES PER YEAR IN BANGALORE, INDIA SURFACING PLAYGROUNDS IN AUSTRALIA PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT IN COLOMBIA At our factory in Purwakarta our employees need good quality lighting for manufacturing and quality control. This used to be provided by a large number of high-intensity fluorescent lamps. But the cost of electricity and the environmental impact of the lamps led us to find a better way of lighting the production floor. By fitting over 1500 m² of translucent sheets into the roof, we were able to reduce the carbon footprint by approximately 490 tonnes of CO2. This saving would be the equivalent to the carbon sequestration from the atmosphere of about 80,000 mature pine trees over the period of one year. This initiative has since been rolled out to other Bata factories. Harvesting rainwater not only reduces the demand on essential water supplies, but also reduces runoff, erosion and the contamination of surface water. At our factory in Bangalore, we decided to use the large factory roof area of over 2000 m² to capture and store water which could then be used for amenities such as washrooms. The water is filtered to remove particles and then stored in 1000 hL storage tank. The project evolved to capture water across the entire site, enlarging the harvesting area to over 26,000 m². The system now generates two million litres of water per year. We are combining this with a campaign to help our employees save water wherever possible. Bata Industrials Australia joined forces with Matta in turning waste rubber and PVC from our gumboots into a two-layered playground surfacing system consisting of impact absorbing rubber shock pads overlaid by durable and attractive modular tiles. The products carry the label Good Environmental Choice Australia which is part of the Global Ecolabelling Network. Traditional plasticisers, used to make PVC more flexible, are known to cause harm to the environment. The Bata factory in Colombia has embraced modern technology by using a natural product, epoxidised soya bean oil (ESBO) as a replacement. Initially, this caused problems with UV-exposure but these problems have now been overcome. We have substituted traditional plasticisers with this more environmentally friendly alternative, helping to save the environment and also saving nearly USD 100,000 per year. 47 48 WE MAKE GREEN SHOES AND EVERY OTHER COLOUR HACEMOS CALZADO VERDE Y CUALQUIER OTRO COLOR 49 50 SUSTAINABILITY IN DETAIL SUSTENTABILIDAD EN DETALLE CARING FOR OUR WORKFORCE PREOCUPÁNDONOS POR NUESTRA FUERZA DE TRABAJO Bata’s heritage lies in its global financially four Bata schools in Bolivia, manufacturing. The One Big Idea project developed a reusable bag, ‘Re Bag Me’ that doubles up as a shoebox and a shopping bag. This innovative design is manufactured from recyclable polypropylene and protects shoes during storage and transport. It then can be used by the customer as a handbag, a shoulder bag or even a schoolbag. Re Bag Me will eliminate the need for over 100 million shoeboxes by 2020. We are testing it in three markets this year and will roll it out from 2014 onwards. Our market survey showed that 97% of people like the idea and that 80% would re-use the bag, so we are confident it will be hugely successful. Although Re Bag Me is more expensive to produce than a shoebox, it occupies less space and therefore saves both money and energy. Using Re Bag Me means we will generate 20% less carbon emissions to transport and distribute the shoes. We will also have 15% more space in our stockrooms. Our customers love the idea, our stores look forward to receiving their new packaging and Re Bag Me will be good for the environment too. By this we mean family in its widest sense. Ever since Bata was founded in the late 19th century, it has been our priority to look after the needs and the welfare of our people. Making sure that Bata employees, and the families and communities that depend on them, are cared for has and will continue to shape the way we do business. In the early years, this duty of care extended to ensuring that Bata employees could benefit from affordable food, shelter and healthcare and that they were given the opportunity to learn to read and write at a time when facilities were inadequate and education was a privilege beyond most people’s reach. Today, Bata continues to place huge emphasis on caring for its people, both in the way that we support and encourage our employees to reach their potential through education, work experience and mentoring, and the way that we consider the needs of our ‘extended family’ in the many communities we operate in around the world. 59 OUR LOCAL FAMILY NUESTRA FAMILIA LOCAL FROM FACTORY WORKER TO SCHOOL HEADMASTER – MR MANYIMA’S STORY MEET RAJEDA 60 Rajeda Begum is Bata’s best performing Aparajita in Bangladesh. As a 19 year-old working for the Bata Shoe Company, Mr Manyima would dream of returning to school to finish his education. Little did he know that he would later become the headmaster of one of Zimbabwe's leading primary schools. “My first job was as a general hand, working in the ‘wet section’ of the tannery of the Bata Zimbabwe factory. After six months, I moved to the rubber department where I tied laces onto tennis shoes – we had a good time in my section! Away from work, I read books and I decided to return to school to study for my O- and A-level examinations, eventually enrolling at teacher training college in 1976. My father’s ambition for me to become a teacher was in sight! I later returned to Bata; this time to the Bata Primary School for teaching practice. The School had been created in 1939 as an education centre for Bata employees to learn how to read and write, and was later used for employees’ children. “During my teaching practice I must have made a good impression as the headmaster asked me to return to the Bata School once I had qualified. Two years later, I did so, taking Grade 5 pupils – the same class I had taught as a trainee teacher. We stayed together through Grades 6 and 7, and, when the pupils left, each one had passed their national examinations – a rare achievement in Zimbabwe! I continued to teach Grades 6 and 7. Many pupils taught have gone onto further and higher education; I am immensely proud of them all. “With many rewarding years of teaching behind me, I was seconded to the headmaster’s office and in 1987 became head of the Bata Primary School. The Bata Shoe Company provides valuable resources to ensure we remain high achieving. I believe that Bata’s culture of success breeds success in our school; the support and interest we receive from Bata inspires us. Bata is behind our success every step of the way.” Mr Manyima, Headmaster, Bata Primary School, Zimbabwe The Bata Primary School has distinguished itself, attaining a 100% pass mark for pupils sitting their national examination every year since 1989. In fact, it is the only school in Zimbabwe to achieve this and is ranked first in schools located in the Midlands province – no small achievement, given that there are over 900 schools. ¡Yo estaré allí!» 67 68 69 70 2 OUTLOOK PERSPECTIVA 20 20 71 OUTLOOK 2020 PERSPECTIVA 2020 BUILDING SUSTAINABLE GROWTH CONSTRUYENDO UN CRECIMIENTO SUSTENTABLE 72 OUR PEOPLE Appoint sustainability champions throughout our organisation.
