St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church April 26th “Fourth Sunday of Easter” World Day of Prayer for Vocations Congratulations to Raquel Ng the designer and artist of our new Parish Logo What the new symbol means: The Christian saint and virgin, Catherine of Alexandria, was a princess who exemplified remarkable intelligence. As a young woman, she challenged the pagan emperor, Maxentius, by opposing his persecution against Christians. Many pagan philosophers were hired to refute Catherine’s beliefs, but were defeat ed themselves by her wit and eloquence, and were converted to Christianity. Displeased, Emperor Maxentius imprisoned Catherine, and when she refused to marry him, declaring Jesus Christ as her spouse, he condemned her to the breaking wheel… This logo, which now represents our church, depicts a number of elements that pertain to Saint Catherine. Centered is the breaking wheel, to which Catherine was first condemned to when she refused to renounce her Christian beliefs. It broke, miraculously, at her touch, prompting the emperor to execute her by beheading. The logo also displays a sword — the instrument that ultimately made Catherine a martyr. Very often is she portrayed with this sword in her hand. Other elements include the olive wreath, which is a common component in early Christian Art. It symbolizes peace, and is often accompanied by a dove. This dove represents the Holy Spirit. Hence, wings were placed by the hilt of the sword, further accentuating the shape of a cross. This is a meaningful rendition of what our Church is all about. Even though we have been in our community for years, we are still the pilgrim Church searching the steps of our journey on earth. Thanks and congratulations to Raquel Ng for bringing this symbolism to our community. As a climax to a prayer that is continually offered throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission "ad gentes". The yearly seasons lay down the bounty of their harvest, and daily our own lives pour forth their energy into tasks and labors—all a laying down. Most people want to be and are generous. Most people want to forgive. Most people want to be patient, to sacrifice for the sake of love, to give back what is received. Most people want to give of themselves for the happiness of others, to do service for the community, to donate blood, to be able to forgo their own way for the sake of harmony, to be courageous even at great cost. All of creation also has the power to take up life again. Springtime returns; each morning we instinctively awaken to another day; weakened bodies heal. We also have the power to take up life. We seek relationships of love; we desire to enflesh that love with children. We work hard; we long to be creative; we strive to be good; we seek to create harmony and peace. We hunger for a relationship with our God. And we succeed more often than not. We do have a God-given power to take up new life. It is our God’s command to us. That dual rhythm of laying down and taking up is but the echo of the Lord Jesus and how he chose to live among us. It was his Father’s command to him, bred in his bones and in his spirit, and it is a command that continues to show itself in our lives. Rev. Anthony Dao, Pastor Rev.
