St. Rose of Lima Parish Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima In Christ, We are Bread for one another: Broken… we gather. Nourished… we reach out. ………………….....……………………………. En Cristo, Somos Pan para cada uno: Lo Dividimos… nos juntamos. Alimentados… tendemos la mano. The Message & The Majesty May 8, 2016 ASCENSION OF THE LORD The Ascension of our Lord might not seem all that important to many Chris ans. However, it's a pivotal event in the work of Christ. It speaks to us on several levels. As Pope Benedict XVI once remarked, the Ascension is not about Jesus’ astral journey through the stars. It is about far deeper truths. Our first reading tells us that we are not to spend me gazing up to heaven awai ng Jesus to return, as the rela vely recent theory of the “Rapture” states. This theory has never had any weight in Catholic teaching because faithful to Scripture, it is clear that we have work to do from the Lord. In the Acts, we read that the Apostles were le behind to con nue the work of Jesus. That is our work today. We should not be specula ng about the ming of Christ’s return. We should be doing the work the Lord has commissioned us to do. Our Gospel account of the Ascension presents Jesus telling the Apostles to preach the Gospel to all the na ons, beginning at Jerusalem. Throughout Israel’s history, Jerusalem was the place to which people came. It was the spot where they gathered. It was the center of Judaism. Here, Jesus commissions the Apostles to gather in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit and then to go to all the na ons with His message and grace. They did not remain in Jerusalem wai ng for a “Rapture.” They went forward with their mission. Maybe we can become too introspec ve and preoccupied with inner Church issues. A great deal of me, energy and money have been spent on debates over ecclesias cal poli cs, sadly dismissing the strength we need for mission. We need to seriously take Jesus’ words to heart and ensure that we are focused on preaching the Gospel one-by-one, not missing any opportunity to preach the truth by word and example, making Christ known to everyone we may encounter, living His truth even in the li le things of daily life and invi ng people to experience the life of the Church. The Ascension of Jesus reminds us of some very important truths. First, we should not become preoccupied with iden fying signs of Christ’s return. We have work to do. Second, we do not possess Christ. He possesses us and we belong to Him and His mission. Third, the Church is not an end in itself. Its purpose is to hold up Christ for the world to see. The Ascension was not a departure ceremony, but the beginning of a new way for the Apostles to be part of Christ and His work. Today, we too can be part of Christ and His work. That is the message and the majesty of the Ascension we celebrate today. 11701 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20878-1024 PHONE: 301-948-7545 FAX: 301-869-2170 EMERGENCIES (A er Hours): 301-355-8191 CANCELLATION INFORMATION: x307 WEBSITE: www.strose-parish.org EUCHARIST / EUCARISTÍA Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Monday-Friday................................... 8:30 am (English) 1er Viernes ........................................ 7:00 pm (Español) Sunday............................................... 7:15 am (English) 1er Dimanche................................... 10:00 am (Français) 2nd Sunday ........................................ 5:00 pm (Tagalog) Church / Iglesia Saturday Vigil ..................................... 5:00 pm (English) Sunday...................................... 8:45 am (English + ASL) ........................................................ 11:15 am (English) Domingo ........................................... 1:00 pm (Español) RECONCILIATION / RECONCILIACIÓN Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Thursday........................ 7:00-9:00 pm (English/Español) Church / Iglesia Saturday ..................................... 4:00-4:30 pm (English) Domingo .................................... 2:15-3:15 pm (Español) BAPTISM PREPARATION / PREPARACIÓN PARA BAUTIZO Bap sm Classes Begin while pregnant or awai ng adop on.
