REFLECTION
October 12, 2014
In Matthew’s Gospel we hear the parable of the king who
gave a wedding feast for his son but his invitations were
spurned. When he extended the invitation to the people
in the streets, “they found, bad and good alike, and the
hall was filled with guests.” But one of the guests did not
dress in a wedding garment – perhaps as insulting to the
host as today coming to a wedding in a bathing
suit. When he refuses to answer questions about his dress,
the king orders, “Bind his hands and feet, and cast him
into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and
grinding of teeth.” I couldn’t help thinking that this king’s
response to his guest was a parallel to the way Jesus cares
for us and invites us through the story of Lazarus. His
beloved friend had died and Jesus stood in the doorway
of the tomb comforting Lazarus’ sisters. Then he called,
“Lazarus, come out!” and Lazarus responded immediately
to Jesus’ invitation. He came out from the tomb.
He calls for Lazarus to have his hands and feet unbound
from the burial cloths and to come out of the darkness of
the tomb into the light with Jesus. Rather than a wailing in
the darkness, Lazarus was met with the rejoicing cries of his
sisters and all of those who loved him as he came to life
again. Jesus invites us to that summoning back to life, the
invitation to unbind ourselves from the things that tie us
up. Today we can become aware of how much God
longs for a deeper relationship with us, one where we
realize that God is not in our minds, but deeply settled in
our hearts, just waiting for us to notice. And if we really
take the time today to listen, we will hear Jesus say deep
in our hearts, “Untie him and let him go. Untie her and let
her go.”

The Popular Speaker Series Returns!
Thursday Evenings,7:00-8:15 PM, October-November
Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd started a new
offering for the community in 1995 entitled, “Over Coffee.”
Nearly every Thursday evening in October, November
February and March, a well-known public person is present
to share insights on areas of public life which affect all of
us. Politicians, artists, musicians, authors, business
professionals, educators, journalists, and youth advocates
have spoken and responded to questions. There is no

TODOS ESTAMOS INVITADOS
A LA FIESTA DEL SEÑOR
En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús habla de un rey con una
lista larga de gente invitada a un banquete nupcial. El
banquete es el cielo como vemos en la primera lectura:
"un banquete de vinos exquisitos y manjares sustanciosos"
donde Dios arrancará "el velo que cubre el rostro de
todos los pueblos...destruirá la muerte para siempre."
Desgraciadamente, los invitados no vienen. Tienen cosas
"más importantes" en su mente. Aun se burlan de y
maltratan a los mensajeros del Rey.
Todos son invitados, pero no todos responden. Es difícil
entender el hecho que todos no puedan ser salvados.
No obstante, eso es la conclusión de la parábola:
"muchos son los llamados y pocos los escogidos."
Es importante entender que el cielo es un banquete. A
todos les gusta la idea general de un banquete, pero en
cuanto a un banquete específico depende de lo que
esté en la lista de comidas. A algunos les gustan los
ostiones mientras otros no pueden aguantar verlos. Es
igual en cuanto a otras comidas. Los franceses comen
"escargot" y los mexicanos tienen una sopa llamado
"menudo." Escargot son caracoles y menudo se hace del
estomago de una vaca. Una persona tiene que ser
dispuesta a probarlos para apreciar cuan deliciosos
puedan ser. Algo semejante aplica al cielo. No importa
si alguien tiene un gusto para ostiones o tripa o
caracoles. Pero importa si tenemos un gusto para Dios. A
pesar de ser hechos para Dios, en esta vida tenemos que
desarrollar el gusto para él. Es fácil llenarnos de otras
cosas - se puede decir "chatarra espiritual." Algunos no
van a la misa porque "está aburrida." Pues, una ensalada
es aburrida en comparación a papas fritas. Pero se
puede cultivar un gusto para la ensalada - igual que una
persona puede cultivar un gusto para Dios. El infierno es
una prisión construida por el mismo prisionero. Se
construye de cosas como la cólera, la avaricia,
pornografía, vanidad, auto-imagen falsa y los engaños.
Es un dieta diario que mata. Todos están invitados; no
todos aceptan la invitación. ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo respondes a la
invitación de Dios?
