SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Parishioners who are intending to marry must contact the Rectory at least six months before the date on which they wish to marry to begin their pre-marital preparation for this sacred event in their lives. We have a very generous host family from Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Malverne, hosting a 17 year old girl from an Ethiopian orphanage who is here for medical attention. Etetu is rapidly learning English, but she still struggles with her school work in Math, Science, and Social Studies. The host mom: Rosemary, has also been very generous in paying for physical therapy out of her own pocket, but if there is a generous minded physical therapist, she could use some donated hours!! También es un día para pedir por las almas del purgatorio, por aquellos hermanos nuestros que esperan la entrada al cielo, al que no podemos llegar sin una completa purificación de las propias faltas. Quienes están en el purgatorio sufren en formas profundas que no podemos imaginar. Sufren, es verdad, con esperanza, porque llegará la hora en que podrán recibir el abrazo eterno de Dios. Pero sufren con intensidad. Por eso celebran con inmensa alegría todo lo que podamos realizar por ellos, al unir nuestras oraciones a la Cruz de Cristo. La Iglesia recomienda, en este día, rezar por los difuntos. El "Catecismo de la Iglesia católica" (n. 1032) explica: "Desde los primeros tiempos, la Iglesia ha honrado la memoria de los difuntos y ha ofrecido sufragios en su favor, en particular el sacrificio eucarístico (cf DS 856), para que, una vez purificados, puedan llegar a la visión beatífica de Dios. La Iglesia también recomienda las limosnas, las indulgencias y las obras de penitencia en favor de los difuntos". Ese mismo n. 1032 añade una hermosa cita de san Juan Crisóstomo, que nos invita a ayudar a quienes están en el purgatorio: "Llevémosles socorros y hagamos su conmemoración. Si los hijos de Job fueron purificados por el sacrificio de su padre (cf. Job 1,5), ¿por qué habríamos de dudar de que nuestras ofrendas por los muertos les lleven un cierto consuelo? No dudemos, pues, en socorrer a los que han partido y en ofrecer nuestras plegarias por ellos" (San Juan Crisóstomo, homilía in 1Cor. 41,5). El Papa Benedicto XVI también nos invita a orar por nuestros hermanos difuntos. "la comunidad de los creyentes ofrece el sacrificio eucarístico y otras oraciones de sufragio por aquellos a quienes la muerte ha llamado a pasar del tiempo a la eternidad. Rezar por los difuntos es una obra buena, que presupone la fe en la resurrección de los muertos, según lo que nos han revelado la sagrada Escritura y, de modo pleno, el Evangelio" Tambien el Papa invitaba a orar por los difuntos con estas palabras: "Queridos hermanos y hermanas, unamos nuestra oración común y elevémosla al Padre de toda bondad y misericordia para que, por intercesión de María santísima, el encuentro con el fuego de su amor purifique pronto a estos amigos nuestros ya difuntos de toda imperfección y los transforme para alabanza de su gloria" (Benedicto XVI, homilía, 3 de noviembre de 2008). Sí: recemos con el corazón por quienes esperan el encuentro completo con el Señor. Es un gesto de caridad hacia ellos y de confianza en Dios, que nos salva a través del sacrificio de Jesucristo que celebramos en cada misa, y que une nuestras oraciones a la misma entrega que el Hijo realiza, para nuestra salvación, en el Calvario.
