A Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding friendship with Jesus Christ Established 1700 3320 St. Peter’s Drive Waldorf Maryland 20601 301-843-8916 www.stpeterswaldorf.org Mission Statement Saint Peter’s Church is a Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding friendship with Jesus Christ. We strive to build upon the legacy of faith entrusted to us by the Catholic pioneers who courageously established Saint Peter’s – an ethnically and economically diverse community unified through the power of the Holy Spirit in the truth and love of Jesus Christ. Mindful of this legacy as well as our need for ongoing conversion amidst new challenges, today, in our fourth century, we seek friendship with Jesus through our commitments to: • Understand and proclaim His saving truth revealed in the Bible in union with the official teaching authority of the Catholic Church. • Worship joyfully His living presence in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. • Recognize His face in those we are privileged to serve and protect, particularly the poor and vulnerable. • Welcome Him in each other through our fellowship and unity amidst the rich diversity of our parish community. • Encounter Him and the beauty of His creation by preserving our parish as a peaceful and prayerful sanctuary. • Hear His personal call to holiness and help families embrace it in all vocations, especially to priesthood or consecrated life. • Imitate His generous self-giving as a way of life that expresses our gratitude to Him and our love for God and neighbor. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY - 301-932-7713 g{x ZÜxtà `çáàxÜç Éy à{x Xâv{tÜ|áà4 Just a few weeks ago, we concluded the joyful season of Easter with its festivities. Today we celebrate another feast—the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ—Corpus Christi. Through it we are reminded about the great mystery of the Eucharist and celebrate the most fundamental part of our Christian faith! Why Corpus Christi? In a clear connection to Holy Thursday and the institution of the Eucharist, the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV to be observed on the second Thursday after Pentecost. Through that feast, the pope wanted to strengthen the faith of Christians in the presence of Christ under the Eucharistic species and promote the Eucharistic devotion. Therefore, one of the important elements of the feast is the procession around the neighborhood in the vicinity of the church with the Blessed Sacrament. Although in many places today the feast is observed on the Sunday after the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity and the procession is omitted, it still reminds us about this central part of our Christian faith and invites us to meditate on the gift of the Eucharist in our lives. Corpus Christi for Me Personally, I have a special sentiment to that feast for at least two reasons. The first one goes back to my childhood and the years I spent in my native Poland. For Polish people, Corpus Christi is a very important feast that is still celebrated on a Thursday as a holiday. Even the Communists did not manage to change it as they did with other religious feasts. Every year, each parish has its own procession surrounding the parish church with the Blessed Sacrament. And larger towns and cities organize similar processions that go through its central parts. It is a way of a public expression of the faith which was particularly important in the time when such expressions were strictly restricted in Poland. So for me, that feast brings back happy memories of the colorful and joyful processions I attended for many years in my hometown. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ The second reason is more recent. My diaconal ordination in 2013 and priestly ordination last year took place on the Saturday before the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Therefore, my first mass as a deacon and my first homily, and the first mass I celebrated as a priest all fell on the day of that solemnity. For that reason, that feast reminds me in a special way about my vocation, the call God made in my life and my ministry in which the Eucharist takes its central place. An Encounter with God But for all of us, the feast of Corpus Christi is a reminder that the Eucharist is the special place where we can encounter God in our lives. Christ left us this sign of his permanent and real presence so that we may share with him our joys and hopes, our struggles and hardships as he wants to share with us his divine life. Just as every day we need material food in order to sustain our lives, so we need this spiritual food even more to learn how to love and to give meaning to our existence. Natural food is digested and assimilated by our bodies and becomes part of us. But it is not so with this supernatural food. As Saint Augustine said, “having received it, we become that what we eat—the body of Christ, the Church.” Let the experience of the love of God in the Eucharist help us to grow in faith and unity among us. That’s the feast of all of us who partake of the great mystery of the divine love incarnated in Jesus Christ. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch. The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 7, 2015 St. Peter’s School Recognizes National Contest Winners The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, recently announced the national winners of its annual Junior American Citizen contest. St. Peter’s School had several winners. They are sixth-graders Courtney Edmonds and Malaika Lewis, seventh-graders Amber Tipton, Patricia Cain, Kristen Blais, Lauren Liberati, Jacob Yalung and Jade Dofat and eighth-graders Ashley Cooley and Rachel Sheehan. Sheehan, Dofat and Lewis won first place for their entries, which were posters. Students around the country have participated in the DAR Junior American Citizens program since 1901. By reaching out to students in kindergarten to 12th grade in the country, the program fosters the idea that the rights and responsibilities of citizenship can and should be taught from an early age. Through its clubs and contests, the Junior American Citizens program teaches America’s schoolchildren the principals of democratic government, good citizenship and appreciation of American heritage and history. Members participate in community service and patriotic activities while learning history and love of America. There are JAC contests offered in art, creative expression and community service. Entries are judged by grade on three levels — gifted, general and special needs — so that every child may enter the contest regardless of ability. Children from youth groups, as well as schools, may participate in the contests. St. Peter’s School Has a New Website We have a new website, the address is the same but it has many upgrades. The daily rosary intention is for “vocations from our parish, each and every intention that you may have and for all the deceased members of the parish, those who will die today and especially within the hour and for the souls in purgatory.” This early-morning devotion has taken place at St. Peter’s for many years. Parish news and information in our weekly bulletin can also be found in color on the Parish website at www.stpeterswaldorf.org. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 7, 2015 Are You Registered in the Parish? If you aren’t receiving envelopes, then you are not registered or your registration address is out-of-date. This may seem like a technicality, but being a registered parishioner has significant benefits. Registration allows us to demonstrate objectively that we are participating members of St. Peter’s. By using envelopes each Sunday, regardless of the amount we contribute, we build a record that we are not just names on a registration list but that we actually participate in the life of our parish family. When is this record important? • • • • When we need letters to serve as a godparent or confirmation sponsor. When we’re seeking to have baptisms or weddings here. When we’re buying a cemetery plot here. When we want a child to receive the “Living Our Catholic Faith” scholarship at St. Peter’s School. We are a large parish, and our clergy and staff depend on our records of attendance to verify our participation in these types of situations. In addition, registration makes planning easier at both the parish and archdiocesan level. For example, associate pastors are no longer assigned to smaller parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington. Parish registration and participation are among the most important measures in making these assignments. So take a minute, call 301-843-8916 or email the parish office at [email protected] and request information to register. Registering is easy! Fill out the census form, return it and you are registered! Thinking of Donating Your Car to a Charity? Please consider the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. If you donate your car through the National SVdP Car Donation program, our St. Peter Conference can receive the proceeds for our charitable work. You just need to call (800) 322-8284 and the National SVdP contractor can arrange to pick up your car in 24 hours. They take care of all the paperwork and send you the tax forms for the donation. We in the St Peter Conference do not get involved except to receive the proceeds from donations in our zip code areas (e.g., Waldorf, White Plains).
