Start of practice session: Look at page 3 of Essential
Elements. Then, sit or stand in front of a mirror and
check your playing position (upright
position). Compare it with what is shown in your
book. Be sure to have your elbow at the correct
angle. Upper strings, be sure your left wrist does not
bend. Pizzicato (pluck) notes on open strings and
be sure to hold your proper playing position.

week we will work on #2-12).

Welcome to Beginning Orchestra! We are having fun learning lots of new things in orchestra every day,
and I hope you are sharing in the excitement of listening to your child play at home each day. This week
we will be learning many new songs, so encourage your child to play for you!
This practice journal is a tool to monitor your child’s homework in Beginning Orchestra. For beginners, 20
minutes of practicing is required every day. The chart above is used to direct that practice by reminding
the student of what to play. When new skills are learned they will be added to the chart. Your child will
receive a practice journal every week. If your child is unable to practice because of illness, being away
on a trip or for any other reason, please fill in that day with a zero. Honesty is crucial. What is important
is that your student, the parent and teacher are aware of how much practice is taking place. This helps
us in evaluating your child’s performance and identifies any instructional skills that might need to be
reviewed. The weekly return of the practice journal with a parent signature is a significant portion of your
child’s grade. The amount of practicing is not graded.
