Orion is a K-5 school that offers a nurturing learning environment where
mutually respectful relationships with adults and peers are considered
fundamental for early intellectual development and personal growth.
Orion's strength is built on the participation of families. There are many
ways to support the school while satisfying parent participation
requirements, including helping with our Children’s Authors &
Illustrators Festival!
We welcome you to take a tour of our school. Orion is currently
accepting applications for the 2009-2010 school year.

The founder of KO Kids Books,
Kathryn Otoshi pioneered her way
into the industry by writing,
illustrating, and publishing her first
book, What Emily Saw. In 2004,
she wrote and illustrated Simon &
the Sock Monster, which got
shortlisted for Best Children’s
Book by both the Writer’s Digest
and the USA Book News. She
also illustrated Marcello the Movie
Mouse and worked with Happy
Feet director George Miller on
novelizing the film script for the
movie storybook. Her latest book
One, picked as Hicklebee’s Book of the Year, is an anti-bullying book
exploring tolerance and the power of one voice.

Although Jim LaMarche has lived in
Santa Cruz for years, the small
Wisconsin town where he grew up
and the nearby Milwaukee River
show up in almost everything he
draws, including The Rainbabies. He
has also illustrated his own stories,
including The Raft and Up. “I feel
very lucky to have ended up as an
illustrator of children's books. And
maybe that isn't so different from my
childhood dream of being a
magician after all. Starting with a
clean sheet of paper and with
nothing up my sleeves, I get to
create something that was never there before."

Orion School’s fourth grade class will have refreshments for sale throughout
the day. The proceeds will be applied toward the cost of attending Outdoor
Education next school year.

After working as an editor and earning an
M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Mills College,
Annie Barrows wrote a number of books
for grown-ups. But in reading to her
children, “I remembered the books I loved
when I was young and I remembered how
important they were to me. And I thought:
I want to write children’s books.” Her first
children's book, Ivy and Bean, an ALA
Notable Book for 2007, is now a series
about the adventures of this unlikely
team. Her other books include The Magic
Half and the New York Times bestseller
(for adults) The Guernsey Literary and
Potato Peel Pie Society.
Después de trabajar como editora y obtener un M.F.A. en Escritura Creativa

Elisa Kleven makes magical
folk-art collages teeming
with life and natural detail for
her own stories and for other
authors. “When I was a very
little kid, I announced that I
wanted to be a “jelliest,”
which was my own made up
word for a children’s book
author/illustrator.” She says
she has a condition called
synesthesia: “In my mind,
every letter and number comes with its own color. For example, “four” is a
persimmony orange-red, and “D” is the brown of dark chocolate.” She
illustrated the newly released non-fiction collection Wish: Wishing Traditions
Around the World.

Kleven crea mágicos colages folclóricos llenos de vida y detalles naturales

Joe Sherlock, Kid Detective,
solves mysteries and incites
laughter in the early reader
chapter books written and
illustrated by Dave Keane.
“Despite his problems with car
sickness, irritating sisters, a
sensitive stomach, a fear of ants
and dogs, Joe Sherlock
manages to keep his eye on the
ball and get the job done,” says
Dave, who grew up in San Jose
with six brothers. In high school
he drew cartoons for the school
paper and yearbook and worked hard to earn the title of class clown. He
has two picture books coming out in spring, 2009.

Cynthia Chin-Lee picked up a
pen and began writing for fun
in the sixth grade. “I like
playing with words,” she
says. She studied East Asian
Languages at Harvard, did
graduate work at the
University of Hawaii, and
began her writing career as a
technical writer for high-tech
companies. Her first
children’s book, Almond
Cookies & Dragon Well Tea, is
an autobiographical tale of
friendship. Her other books
include the sophisticated
alphabet book A Is for Asia, and Amelia to Zora: Twenty-six Women Who
Changed the World.
Cynthia Chin-Lee tomó una lapicera y comenzó a escribir únicamente por

“As a child I would go looking for
my face in my coloring books, in my
storybooks but I never found my
round, chicana face, my long dark
hair. So I would go to that blank
page in the back or the front of
these books and draw my own big
face right in where it belonged,”
says Maya Christina Gonzalez. The
San Francisco painter has
illustrated more than a dozen
children’s books, including one she
wrote, My Colors, My World. Most
of her books are bilingual (English
and Spanish), including My Very
Own Room and Nana’s Big
Surprise.
“Cuando era niña buscaba mi rostro en mis libros de colorear, en mis libros
de cuentos, pero nunca encontraba mi cara redonda y Chicana, ni mi largo
pelo negro. Entonces iba a la página en blanco que estaba al principio o al

Jennifer Holm loved reading books as
a child, even while raking the lawn.
After college, she produced television
commercials and music videos in New
York City for clients like Nickelodeon,
MTV and Hershey's. Receiving a copy
of her great aunt’s childhood diary
sparked Jennifer’s first novel, Our Only
May Amelia, which won a Newbery
Honor. Other books include The Creek,
Penny from Heaven, and a series with
her husband, Jonathan Hamel, called
The Stink Files about a British cat of
mystery. Her pink-clad imaginative
heroine, Babymouse, is about to star
in her 10th book, illustrated by
Jennifer’s brother Matthew Holm (who appeared at last year’s festival).
