VOL.XXI • NUM 21 A San Antonio Tradition Since 1913 www.laprensasa.com English-Español 3 de febrero de 2016 Una Tradición en San Antonio desde 1913 LA PRENSITA City-Wide Job Shadow Day opens doors for S.A. teens By Christina Acosta [email protected] Many teens starting out in school today can be faced with the challenges of becoming unsure of what career they would like to pursue in their future. Thanks to SA Works and Ju nior Achievement (JA), many students gained access to valuable resources to learn about how the real world works. Together, they hosted more than 1,700 teens from across Bexar County who participated in a City-Wide Job Shadow Day on Tuesday. In fact, it was time for this day to rise again as this was San Antonio’s first City-Wide Job Shadow day in more than 10 Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and San Antonio business leaders spoke about the importance of years. For SAISD Superintendent job shadow opportunities and the impact this experience will have on students, employers and school Pedro Martinez, revitalizing a job shadow day will offer underprivi districts. More than 59 employers hosted 1,700 Bexar County students in on Tuesday. leged students new opportunities (Photo, Christina Acosta) for their future. “When they go to a company, they will see the type of careers that are out there. In our district, 93 percent of children live in poverty. Many of our children do not see how connections can lead to a better economic future,” said Martinez. “Therefore, having this experience is not only going to help them understand what we are doing in our classroom, but more importantly, will help them shape a goal for themselves in the future.” Creating resources for teens was made possible as SA Works and JA worked closely with educators and administrators from more than 12 school districts around Bexar County, includ ing SAISD and NISD, and two public charter schools to provide pupils with higher learning op portunities. District 5 Councilwoman Shir ley Gonzales, District 8 Council man Ron Nirenberg, Representa tive Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) and Melody Woosley, director of the Department of Human Services joined United Way of San Anto nio and Bexar County, Catholic Charities of San Antonio and the San Antonio VITA Coalition for the event. “For many of our low-income residents in District 5, VITA pro vides a service that is essential to their financial security and family well-being,” said Councilwoman Gonzales. “Today marks the be ginning of yet another productive year for the VITA team to create a positive impact in San Antonio that will last for generations.” There are 19 VITA sites open, through April 18, across the city with services available on a walkin basis. “VITA is a city-wide effort to help low to moderate income tax payers properly claim the EITC and other tax credits that improve the lives of San Antonio working families,” said Director Woosley. Trained and certified volunteers work with families to file tax re turns with refunds electronically deposited within 10-14 business days on average. “As a nonprofit organization re sponsible for ensuring our donors’ dollars are invested in effective and efficient programs and servic es, our volunteers think that VITA is one of our most valuable invest ments of time and resources,” said Jonathan Gurwitz, chair of United Way’s Strengthening Families Is sue Council. “I am extremely proud of the San Antonio VITA program. Last year, we were able to meet the needs of hardworking individuals and fami lies by preparing over 34,000 tax returns and return over $60 million back into the hands of individuals who often need the refund to buy food, school clothes and other ba sic needs,” stated Antonio Fernan dez, president and CEO, Catholic Charities of San Antonio. Last year, VITA saved taxpayers an estimated $8.5 million in tax preparation fees. San Antonio’s VITA Program is nationally rec ognized as one of the top perform ing programs across the country. For more information or to find a nearby VITA site and its business hours, tax filers can go online to www.vitasa.org or call the United Way Helpline at 2-1-1. Congressman Doggett told the group, “Your money is waiting for you – money you earned working last year and which you can claim now. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) continues to provide free tax assistance to families. With VITA, you can keep all of your money. The EITC is one of our most effective ways to fight poverty.” (Courtesy Photo) City-Wide... connections between employers and schools to organize the visits, curriculum, transportation and logistics. “Students and educators par ticipating in Job Shadow day will get a piece of work. The aware ness can go such a long way in homes where young kids and parents need that exposure at a younger age to learn about how the real world works. Today, we are taking a whole middle school class from East Central to our shops, lunch rooms and into our finance departments to help them 3 de febrero de 2016 (Continued from page 1) understand about the real world,” Peter John Holt from Holt Cat explained. Other employers participating on City-Wide Job Shadow Day included Coca-Cola, Rackspace, The DoSeum, Trinity and Whata burger, among other 59 employ ers. For Judge Wolff, this job shadow day enabled students to learn outside the classroom that hard work and dedication will lead to a rewarding future. “We have been very fortunate with how San Antonio works to change the pipeline of education where more young people are coming through to have a scale of higher income, raise a family, be a productive member of our society and shift to become leaders,” said Judge Wolff. “There is going to be so much work and opportunities in San Antonio. The employers will try to gain around 20,000 people in internships and various programs.” Visit www.sanantonioworks. org and www.jast.org for more details about the program and the goals to make San Antonio greater for students by the year 2020. “Estoy completamente dedicado a ayudar a Hillary. Some cases have already been diagnosed in the United States, including Texas, Hawaii, Illinois, and Florida. All of these cases have been acquired during travel outside of the United States. Patrick S. Ramsey, M.D., M.S.P.H., urges the public ― es pecially pregnant women ― to be informed about the virus, and to take precautions to control mos quitos and avoid exposure when traveling to affected countries. Dr. Ramsey is a maternal–fetal medicine specialist at UT Medi cine San Antonio, the faculty prac tice of the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio. He cares for women with complicated high-risk pregnancies and delivers babies at University Hospital, the Health Science Cen ter’s clinical partner. “The virus is benign in most people, but in pregnant women the virus is associated with birth defects, especially microcephaly ― a congenital condition in which an unborn baby’s brain stops developing and its head is much smaller than usual,” Dr. Ramsey said. “There have also been cases of miscarriage and stillbirth associ ated with the infection.” In adults, the Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, has been associated with Zika vi rus infection. Symptoms can include a fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis, often called pink eye. About 1 in 5 individuals who have the virus will exhibit these symptoms, he said, and they are usually mild. There are no specific treatments or vaccines for Zika. Transmitted by Aedes mosqui toes primarily in tropical regions, the Zika virus was first discovered in Africa. It spread to parts of Asia, and now there are thousands of active cases in Central and South America, including Mexico. “We are being cautious because the virus can spread through mosquito bites,” Dr. Ramsey said. The Aedes mosquito is found in Texas and throughout much of the United States. The Pan American Health Organization has warned that Zika virus could continue to spread throughout the Americas and potentially to local areas in the United States. Dr. Ramsey noted that at this time the U.S. Centers for Disease Dr. Patrick S. Dr. Ramsey urges pregnant women traveling to countries with reported Zika virus infection to avoid contact with mosquitos by staying inside or in a screened-in area. “Spray all exposed skin with mosquito repellent with DEET and treat clothing with permethrin, which can be used safely during pregnancy,” he added. Pregnant women who have traveled recently to one of the countries with a travel advisory for Zika infection should notify their obstetrician, especially if they have any symptoms associ ated with the virus. Dr. Ramsey said that in these situations, even if no symptoms are present, close ultrasound evaluation of their baby may be needed. Testing for Zika is being coordinated through the CDC and state and local health departments. This month, the CDC updated its guidance on Zika virus and issued a warning for nonessential travel to #SAVestidoRojo #LatinasGoRed regions where there is an outbreak. 8 EMPLEOS Need Immediately!! Para la ubicación exacta, consulte la solicitud. http://www.tceq.texas.gov/assets/public/hb610/index.html?lat=29.430277&lng=-98.394444&zoom=13&type=r La instalación existente está autorizada para emitir los siguientes contaminantes atmosféricos: organic compounds, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter including particulate matter with diameters of 10 microns or less and 2.5 microns or less.
