From the Pastor
Today’s readings present us with a beautiful teaching from Our Lord. In it he shows us the wonderful nature
of reconciliation with God and with others. Let’s look at a few points shall we?
The first thing I’d like to address is the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation. When we forgive
or are forgiven the debt owed to us or the debt we owe others is cancelled. A worldly example might help us
to understand. Let’s say that we might have taken a loan from a bank for a large sum of money only to lose
our job or have some catastrophe hit us. If we are unable to pay back the loan the bank may write off the loan
in part or entirely. That’s forgiveness. Now, whether or not the bank wants to do business with us in the future is another question entirely. If we’ve been spotty in our financial transactions they may not want to continue with our business. But, if we’ve been a good customer for a long time the bank may want to continue
with the business relationship. They write off the loan and after some period of rectifying the situation in
which we find ourselves the bank makes it seem that all is taken care of and we start anew as if nothing had
happened. That’s reconciliation.
Which of these two do you think the Lord would have us employ in our dealings with others? Reconciliation
of course. When someone offends us it’s important that we not only forgive, but as far as is possible, start our
relationship again by reconciling ourselves with those in debt to us. If we are the debtor we should seek to
reconcile ourselves with any that we have offended.
The examples that Jesus gives, urging reconciliation with God, are stark and they point to how we should deal
with others. The parables of Lost Sheep, the Woman and her Lost Coin, and the Prodigal Son, all teach us that
God and all those in heaven rejoice when the sinner acknowledges his sin (because sin makes us lose our relationship with God) and is reconciled to God and his Church. When God forgives, he also reconciles us to himself so that we can start a fresh, new, deep, and abiding relationship with him.
As we pray in the Lord’s Prayer “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” we are
in fact asking God to treat us as we treat those who sin against us. Since God desires our reconciliation with
him we too must strive to reconcile with others. As we read in the gospel’s account of the father talking to his
older son who refused to forgive or be reconciled with his wayward younger brother:
“’My son, you are here with me always;
everything I have is yours.
But now we must celebrate and rejoice,
because your brother was dead and has come to life again;
he was lost and has been found.’”

Vamos a ver algunos puntos?
"Hijo, tu siempre estas conmigo;
y todo lo mío es tuyo.
Pero era necesario hacer fiesta y regocijarnos,
porque este hermano tuyo estaba muerto y
ha vuelto a la vida;
estaba perdido y lo hemos encontrado".
