Fasting and Abstinence During Lent
All Catholic ages 14 and older are obliged to abstain from eating meat on the Fridays of Lent. Animal flesh is not eaten out
of respect for the flesh (body) of Christ, which was crucified for our salvation on a Friday (Good Friday).
While fasting from the normal amount of food is not required on the Fridays of Lent, it is nevertheless an
excellent spiritual practice, as is extra time spent in prayer and works of charity such as almsgiving. These penitential
practices underscore that Fridays—even Fridays outside of Lent—are days of penance for the whole Church. As
Catholics, we seek to express our sorrow for Christ’s Passion and Death on this day, and to unite our sacrifices to sis, in
order to purify the world of sin.
Lenten Evening of Reflection
A Lenten Evening of Reflection will take place on Wednesday, March 12. A free dinner will be served at 5:30pm in the Multipurpose Room (cafeteria) of Sacred Heart School. Age-appropriate instruction (for children, adolescents, and adults) will
follow. The evening will conclude with the Solemn Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the recitation of the Divine
Mercy Chaplet. The theme of this retreat is “Spring Training: Understanding the Holy Season of Lent.”
Lenten Hospitality
In keeping with the penitential spirit of Lent, there will be no hospitality after the 5:00pm vigil Mass on Saturday, March 8,
nor on Saturday, April 5. During Lent, only coffee will be served after the 9:00am Mass.
Rite of Election
On Saturday, March 8, the names of parishioners who are preparing for the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism,
Confirmation, and the Eucharist) were presented to Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo. The Bishop then chose (“elected”)
them for these sacraments, which they will receive at the Easter Vigil (April 19). The Rite of Election or Enrollment has
made these parishioners members of the Church’s Elect. Please pray for the Elect during Lent, which is called their
“Period of Purification and Enlightenment”: Emilio Hernández Gutiérrez, Lizbeth Laguna Galvez, and Cody Willis.

Stations of the Cross, Confessions, and Fish Fry
The Stations of the Cross are prayed on the Fridays of Lent at 7:00pm in the church. Confessions are heard beforehand in
the daily Mass chapel at 6:30pm. From 5:00 to 6:30pm, the young people of the parish sponsor a fish fry
in the Multipurpose Room ($5.00/plate with maximum of $20.00 per family).
Extra Confessions
In an effort to make the Sacrament of Penance more available during Lent, confessions will be heard on
Fridays from 6:30 to 7:00pm. This will give people an opportunity to participate in the parish fish fry
(5:00–6:30pm), as well as the Stations of the Cross (7:00pm). Please also note that multiple priests will be on hand to
hear confessions on Thursday, March 20 from 7:00 to 8:30pm.
Divine Mercy Chaplet
During Lent, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy will be prayed 10 minutes before weekend Masses. This devotion originated
in a vision of Our Lord to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska (1905–1938), a religious of the Congregation of Sisters of Our
Lady of Mercy. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist, and is
therefore an excellent preparation for Mass. Please bring a Rosary with you, as the Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed using
those beads. There will be pamphlets available that contain the prayers used in the Chaplet.
Rice Bowls
Lenten rice bowls are available in the commons. They will be collected at all Masses on the weekend of
April 26–27 (the Second Sunday of Easter, or Sunday of Divine Mercy). The money will be forwarded
to Catholic Relief Services, the agency of the U.S. bishops that assists the poor and vulnerable
overseas.
This first week of Lent, CRS Rice Bowl takes us to Kariobangi, a slum in Nariobi, Kenya,
where most young people do not have access to an education or formal, salaried jobs. We meet
Michael, who is now able to feed his family and make his community a better place to live thanks to a
working group organized and supported by CRS. We also explore the Catholic social teaching principle, Sacredness and
Dignity of the Human Person and consider that all things created by God are sacred. Watch a video of Michael at
crsricebowl.org/videos.
Prayer: Join us this week in praying for all people who are unemployed in our own country and especially those
looking for work in the developing world.
Christian Awakening
Attention 11th- and 12th-graders: Christian Awakening is fast approaching. The retreat will be held in Fincastle, VA from
April 4 to 6. Please keep our local team members in prayer as they prepare to serve the weekend: Nick Eckstein,
Youth Coordinator; Lucero Vazquez; Daniel Caccavelli; James Eckstein; Linda Hawker; and Eddie Dees.
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to help at God’s Storehouse the week of March 24–27. Please call Nellie Shea
(434) 548-2712 to sign up.
Thank you to everyone that supported the Mardi Gras
Masquerade Auction last Saturday. The event was a great
success.
SHS will be closed March 24–28 for
Spring Break.
Students attend Mass on Wednesdays at 8:25am, with the
exception of March 26. Parishioners are always welcome.
The Sacred Heart School 2014 Annual Appeal is
available in the commons area. Please prayerfully consider
your donation. Your gift will be an investment in the school
and community. Donations will be accepted through June
30, 2014.

MINISTERIO HISPANO
I DOMINGO DE CUARESMA

MORNING OFFERING TO THE SACRED HEART
O, God, I offer You all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for the intentions for which He
pleads, and offers Himself in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in thanksgiving for your favors, in reparation for my sins, and in humble
supplication for my temporal and eternal welfare, for the needs of our holy Mother the Church, for the conversion of sinners, and for the
relief of the poor souls in purgatory.
