Taste and see,
O taste and see,
taste and see
the goodness of the Lord.
Did you ever wonder what makes white wonder bread so wonderful?
Perhaps, it is the 12 secret ingredients that make the body strong (at
least that is what the advertising claims). But I wonder why this wonder
bread is not so wonderful when left out on the kitchen counter, it turns
green and is perishable, anything but a wonder bread.
The fact of the matter is that we come to this Mass today to eat another
kind of wonder bread. A wonder bread that will not only make our body
strong, but our mind, spirit and soul as well. This wonder bread is
imperishable. This wonder bread is capable of sustaining life forever.
This wonder bread is Jesus Himself.
What is sad, is that sometimes the way that we approach and
understand the reception and eating of the wonder bread that is Jesus
Himself, will be no different than how we eat a piece of white wonder
bread with breakfast.
Jesus tells us, “My flesh is real
food. Whoever eats my flesh will
have eternal life. Unlike your
ancestors who ate this (white)
bread and died nonetheless, the
one who feeds on this bread
(Jesus Himself) shall live forever.” That is why the receiving and eating
of the body of Christ is so wonder-full. ©2015 Life Teen, Inc. All rights reserved.

Pope Francis Corner - MAY 29, 2015
ON ENGAGEMENT (part 2)
We can have hope in the goodness and beauty of
engagement, the Holy Father noted, when we
look to the loving action of God. He Himself
undertook a “journey of engagement” with His
people, marked by a promise (Hosea 2:21-22),
and finally fulfilled in the marriage between
Christ and the Church. But it was certainly a “long way.” Pope Francis
lauded the Italian “masterpiece on engagement” I Promessi Sposi, [The
Betrothed] by Alessandro Manzoni, as a beautiful representation of this
“long way.” He encouraged young people to read it and “see the beauty,
the suffering, but also the fidelity of the engaged couple.” Love is not an
easy task, and the beauty and fidelity of a maturing love grow often in
light of obstacles and suffering. It is especially vital for young people in
today’s culture to understand the seriousness of the promises of love,
the difficulties of the path ahead, and the beauty that will show itself
when love is faithfully protected.
One of the ways the Church guards the importance of engagement is
through the special preparation of pre-marital courses. Though many
couples complain and seem to “attend against their will,” Pope Francis
said that so often afterwards they “thank us, because in fact they found
there the occasion—often the only one!—to reflect on their experience
in terms that aren’t trivial.” In our society, so many couples live in a
kind of “intimacy” that doesn’t allow for real “knowledge” of the other.
It is precisely when “engagement is re-evaluated as a time of… sharing
a plan” that man and woman can see that their love transcends the two
of them and this particular moment. It is within that understanding
that they can gain a deeper understanding of the other, not as simply
an ingredient in my “psychic-physical wellbeing” but as a unique gift
and a co-partner in the greater work of love.

Gusten y vena qué Bueno

¿Te has preguntado qué hace al pan blanco (Wonder) tan maravilloso?
verdadera comida. Quien come mi carne tendrá vida eterna.
A diferencia de sus antepasados que comieron de este pan (blanco) y
sin embargo murieron, quien se alimenta de este pan (Jesús mismo)
vivirá para siempre. Por esta razón el recibir y comer el cuerpo de
Cristo es maravilloso. ©2015 Life Teen, Inc. All rights reserved.

OTHER NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
From the Principal’s Desk...
Dear Parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church,
I am deeply honored to be a part of the sacred privilege and serious
responsibility of providing a Catholic education for the children of
St. Anthony of Padua School. The school has a rich history of
academic excellence and faith formation in the Fresno community. I am
blessed to assist the school community as together we develop 21stcentury learners, engaged citizens, and people of faith.
On behalf of the school community, I express our deep appreciation
for the support of the parish for St. Anthony of Padua School; we are
grateful for the parish’s commitment to Catholic education. As a
teacher and administrator in Catholic schools for the last 40 years, I,
too, am deeply committed to Catholic education. I am honored to work
with the faculty and staff of St. Anthony of Padua School in providing
that education to the students of our school.
The first day of school is August 17. Please join me on that day in
offering a prayer of thanksgiving for the dedicated educators and staff
members listed below whose untiring efforts touch the hearts of our
students each day and spread the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
