más puro, a través de
poblados aislados y rutas
ancestrales entre canales
e islas, disfrutando de
la buena mesa y la
comodidad de un hotel;
exactamente eso es Ruta
Chonos, una invitación
para descubrir Laguna
San Rafael y dejarse
maravillar por sus
encantos.

l archipiélago comprendido entre el golfo Corcovado al Sur
de Chiloé y las tierras aledañas al glaciar San Rafael fue el
corredor predilecto por el que transitó una antigua cultura
hoy extinta, los Chonos, pueblo nómade que durante siglos
cruzaron sus frías aguas en sencillas canoas, usando los
canales como vías naturalmente protegidas del océano
exterior por un centenar de islas.
Hoy es posible recorrer parte de ese legado cultural a
través del crucero Skorpios II, que cada semana entre
Septiembre y Abril, ofrece un viaje de ensueño para
sobrecogerse con la majestuosidad de estos territorios
australes.
El viaje comienza en Puerto Montt, capital de la Región
de Los Lagos, allí se inicia una travesía por el seno de
Reloncaví que lo llevará bordeando el continente hasta
Calbuco, divisando caletas de pescadores y un constante
devenir de embarcaciones grandes y pequeñas que indican
la innegable vocación marina de los habitantes de la zona.
Los paisajes isleños llenos de mitología del archipiélago
de Chiloé, habitado en más de 90%, otorgan un encanto
extra al ya hermoso paisaje natural y cultural. Islas
como Chaulinec, donde el barco se detiene brevemente
a recoger corderos, para la preparación de un próximo
asado patagónico, ofrecen la simpleza de una costanera
de terraplén empalizado, tras la cual un puñado de casas
de tejas con su sencilla iglesia mirando el mar, dan paso
a suaves lomajes verdes que ascienden hasta unirse con
el bosque.
Es el atardecer de la primera jornada y la silueta del
nevado Michimahuida con sus 2.400 m. acompaña al
viajero suavemente coloreado con el sol del ocaso.

EL PUERTO DE LOS NIÑOS
Tras una noche cruzando las aguas del golfo Corcovado,
la motonave se interna al archipiélago de las Guaitecas o
Chonos por el canal Moraleda, una amplia ruta marítima
rodeada de cientos de islas, algunas grandes y otras tan
pequeñas como el terreno de una casa.
La vegetación se vuelve exuberante en un territorio
mínimamente poblado, las dos únicas localidades que
pueden avistarse son Caleta Andrade, y muy cerca, Puerto
Aguirre, un pequeño villorrio situado en un extremo sur de
la isla Las Huichas.
Al acercarse a Puerto Aguirre puede verse el poblado
ascender por los cerros que dan al mar, dibujando un
variopinto mosaico de colores en medio de un paisaje de
bosques verdes y mar azul. Frente a la villa, otra isla oficia
de cementerio, allí llegan los deudos en botes y lanchas
a dejar a sus difuntos en un camposanto típicamente

sureño con su particular conformación de pequeñas
casas tumba.
Al acercarse al embarcadero una treintena de niños de
diferentes edades se agolpan para esperar al viajero, al
descenso se unen con alegría a la comitiva y se ofrecen
como guías turísticos de su amado pueblo.
El paseo lleva por las angostas calles que pasan por la
capilla de madera y prosigue hasta un camino en altura
que une Puerto Aguirre con caleta Andrade y que desde
su mirador entrega maravillosas vistas panorámicas del
canal, las islas y la cordillera de Los Andes con el volcán
Macá de fondo.
Dos cuadras camino abajo, siempre acompañado por
los niños, los turistas pueden visitar la reserva natural
Sendero La Poza, una ruta tapizada de conchas blancas
entre árboles nativos que conduce a dos miradores y en
el cual pueden conocerse diversas especies nativas.

que a principios del siglo XX fueron el epicentro de la
actividad económica del sur, con la explotación del
famoso Ciprés de las Guaitecas.
Este canal es más angosto, y tanto el archipiélago como
el continente van aprisionando el navío en su avance por
esta ruta majestuosa, por una zona que sólo está poblada
en un 2% de su territorio.
El primer vestigio de la cercanía con los Campos de
Hielo Norte, es el nevado San Valentín que se levanta
entre los cerros con sus imponentes 4.058 m. de altura,
justo al inicio de esta enorme masa de hielo que entre
sus maravillas, unos kilómetros más al sur, devela al
ventisquero San Rafael.
Es la tarde del segundo día de navegación, momento para
que el Skorpios II recale en la bahía San Rafael, accidente
geográfico previo a la laguna del mismo nombre. Allí bajo
la luz de las estrellas se realizará la primera noche de
fiesta, con la acostumbrada buena mesa y baile incluido.

FANTASÍA ENTRE HIELOS
Al amanecer comienza la travesía hacia laguna San
Rafael. Partiendo desde la bahía, la motonave se desplaza
suavemente por las angostas aguas de canal Témpanos
y como viajeros fantasmales, lentamente entre la niebla
comienzan a entreverse trozos de hielos que anuncian la
pronta llegada a destino.
Al momento de desembocar en la laguna, la cristalina
alfombra de hielo que conforma el ventisquero se deja
descubrir entre la bruma, mientras el sol del alba ilumina
tibiamente las montañas del costado sur, formando un
contraste entre el frío azul de las sombras y el dorado reflejo
solar en las paredes rocosas. La escena, a pesar del frío, es
la invitación perfecta para que gran parte de los pasajeros
suba a cubierta provistos de binoculares y cámaras.
Los rompehielos Hércules, embarcaciones menores
acondicionadas para su navegación en las cercanías del
glaciar, transportan al visitante en una ruta entre pequeños
y grandes témpanos desprendidos del muro.
El paseo parece la visita a una galería de arte, cuyas obras
emergen de las aguas con extrañas y atractivas formas
llenas de texturas pintadas de blanco, calipsos y pliegues de
un profundo verde botella.
La escala y escasa altura de los rompehielos permiten tener
una cercanía única con el agua, y conceden la oportunidad
de palpar las gélidas estructuras, mientras su navegación
acerca lentamente al muro del ventisquero.
El hito obligado es un brindis con un trago denominado 1230, que mezcla un whisky de 12 años con hielos de 30 mil
años de antigüedad, sacados directamente por el barman
de un témpano cercano.
El estruendoso ruido, semejante al sonido de fuegos
artificiales, son el anuncio de un desprendimiento desde la
pared del glaciar, que en sus zonas más altas puede llegar
a empinarse por sobre los 70 metros.
Las torres, fatigadas por la presión de la masa de hielo y las
altas temperaturas del último siglo van desprendiéndose en
una seguidilla de caídas, que convocan a cientos de aves
que asechan por los peces que mueren o son impulsados
a la superficie al caer el hielo sobre sus cabezas; todo un
festín natural en las gélidas aguas de esta laguna.
Además del avistamiento de gaviotas cahuil, gaviotas
dominicanas y cormoranes imperiales, es posible divisar

un par de focas leopardo que habitan el lugar y que son
fotografiados profusamente por los visitantes.
Luego del almuerzo mirando el ventisquero, el Skorpios
inicia un último acercamiento que permite estupendas
panorámicas de la laguna, una gran despedida para el día
más importante del viaje. El ruido, las olas producidas por la
masa glaciar desmembrándose y las montañas que rodean
la laguna, conforman un ambiente único, en el que nadie
deja de estar sorprendido por la hermosura e imponencia
de la naturaleza.
Con el sol cayendo tras las islas, la motonave avanza
suavemente hacia el norte para, kilómetros más adelante,
ingresar continente adentro por un largo fiordo que será la
atracción de la siguiente jornada.
RELAX AUSTRAL
El tránsito por el fiordo Quitralco, que en mapudungún quiere
decir aguas de fuego, se detiene a medianoche, a unos 13
kilómetros desde que se abandona el canal Ferronave, allí
los más aventureros no pierden la oportunidad de iniciar la
diversión nocturna con una visita a las termas del lugar, único
reducto de humanidad en medio de la agreste geografía.
Las termas de Quitrálco no tienen conexión vial por
tierra, su única vía de transporte es el mar, por ello, en
sus primeros viajes Constantino Kochifas, fundador de

Skorpios, conoció el lugar, acertando al construir en medio
de la nada lo que hoy es un agradable centro turístico,
pieza clave del viaje a la laguna San Rafael.
El día comienza con un viaje a bordo de una lancha a motor
Hércules por el interior del fiordo, avanzando en medio de
sus islas, conociendo la exuberante vegetación y la fauna
de lugar, adornada por nutrias chilenas y lobos marinos.
De regreso, un almuerzo chileno estará esperando a los
viajeros en el fogón del complejo turístico. Empanadas,
buenos vinos y cordero asado al estilo patagónico serán el
centro de una mesa bien criolla y abundante.
Además de la oferta de piscinas termales techadas y al aire
libre, el viajero puede realizar una caminata ascendente
hasta un mirador, que entrega una magnífica vista de este
lugar que en 1996 fue declarado santuario de la naturaleza,
por sus prístinas aguas, sus selvas australes impenetrables
y la rica fauna que le rodea.
CERRANDO UN CICLO
La cuarta jornada impulsa la nave por entre las islas del
archipiélago de Chiloé, atravesando a su paso la costa de
pueblos tan bellos como Chonchi, entrando por un brazo
de mar hasta Castro, lugar donde después del almuerzo, los
pasajeros disponen de toda una tarde para recorrer.
Luego de subir la empinada calle céntrica de la ciudad,
Castro ofrece su postal
típica, los palafitos.
una visita obligada es la iglesia San Francisco de Castro,
patrimonio de la humanidad, que con su estructura de madera
nativa refleja el ingenio de aquellos viejos constructores que
dieron vida a las reconocidas iglesias chilotas.
Muy cerca de allí está el Museo Municipal con su colección
de implementos agrícolas, fotografías, réplicas de las
iglesias patrimoniales y un acercamiento a la historia local
a través de dioramas.
Además de los imperdibles palafitos, otro atractivo de Castro
es la gran cantidad de artesanía que puede encontrarse
en la feria que está en la costanera, casi al costado del
terminal portuario, metros más arriba por calle Blanco
Encalada encontrará tiendas de artesanía Premium, donde
podrá comprar tejidos de lana con diseños de alta costura.
El ocaso anuncia el último zarpe, una cena de gala con
exquisitos manjares del mar despedirán la última noche,
mientras en cubierta las charlas bajo las estrellas y un
cóctail en la mano van despidiendo un viaje maravilloso, por
su encanto natural y cultural. De mañana el sol anunciará el
arribo a Puerto Montt y el equipaje irá cargado de recuerdos
y emociones de un peregrinar por las impactantes aguas
del ventisquero San Rafael y la travesía para llegar a él.
Un crucero totalmente recomendable, tanto por la
experiencia con la naturaleza, como por el servicio a abordo,
cargado de una hospitalidad casi hogareña, y sobretodo una
muy buena mesa que los viajeros no dejarán de alabar.

San Rafael glacier was the perfect corridor through which an
ancient culture, now extinct,
traveled. The Chonos crossed
its cold waters for centuries on
simple canoes by using channels as routes, naturally protected from the exterior ocean by
hundreds of islands.
Today it is possible to get to
part of that cultural legacy
through the Skorpios II cruise,
which every week between
September and April
offers a dreamlike tour
to be overwhelmed by
the majesty of these
southern territories.
The journey starts in
Puerto Montt, capital
of Los Lagos Region,
by sailing the Reloncaví Sound skirting the
continent down to Calbuco, where you will
be able to see fishing
coves and a constant
flow of large and small
vessels that indicate
the undeniable marine
vocation of the inhabitants of the zone.
The islands scenery, full of
mythology of the Chiloe archipielago (whose islands are
inhabited over a 90%), add
an extra appeal to the already
beautiful natural and cultural
landscape. Islands like Chaulinec, where the ship stops
briefly to collect lambs for the
preparation of a future Patagonian barbecue, offer the
simplicity of a palisaded promenade, behind which a handful of tile houses with its modest church looking at the sea
give way to green and gentle
rolling hills that arise until joining with the forest.
The first day leaves as dusk
comes down and the silhouette of the Michimahuida volcano, with its 2400 m, remains

THE CHILDREN’S
HARBOR
After one night crossing the
waters of the Corcovado gulf,

them are big and others as
small as a ground´s house.
The vegetation becomes exu-

their beloved town.
The walk will take you through
the narrow streets where the
wooden chapel is located and
continues until getting to a high
path that joins Puerto Aguirre
with Caleta Andrade, where
you will be able to enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the
channel, the islands and the
Andes range with the Macá
volcano in the background.

Field is the San Valentín volcano, which arises among the hills
with its very imposing 4.058

ships through the ice.
FANTASY IN
THE ICE

the village, another island serves as a cemetery. Families get
there by boats to leave their
deceased relatives in a typical
southern graveyard with its
particular formation of little
tomb-houses.
As we approach the pier about

Sendero La Poza natural reserve, a route upholstered in white shells among native trees
that leads to two viewpoints,
in which you will be able to
know different native species.
The journey goes on through
the Ferronave channel, surrounded by islands that were

the famous Ciprés de las Guaitecas, a unique type of cypress.

temperatures, is the perfect
invitation for the passengers
to go up to the deck, provided
with binoculars and cameras.
The Hércules icebreakers, minor vessels prepared for navigating close to the glacier,
take the visitant through a
route among small and big ice
floes detached from the wall.
The tour resembles a visit to
an art gallery, whose works
emerge from the water with
rare and attractive shapes
full of textures painted white,
calypso and also with deep
bottle green folds.
The scale and limited height
of the icebreakers allow you
to have a unique closeness to
the water, and provide the opportunity to palpate these icy
structures while the navigation
slowly approaches the wall of
the glacier.
The must-live part of the journey comes with a toast with a
drink named 12-30, that mixes
12-year-old whiskey with ice
that dates back to 30 thousand
years ago, collected directly by
the barman from a nearby floe.
A thunderous sound, similar to
the one produced by fireworks,
is the announcement of an ice
detachment from the wall of the
glacier, which in its highest zones can reach over 70 meters.
These towers, weakenedby the
pressure of the ice mass and
the high temperatures of the
last century, detach in a series
of falls that convoke hundreds
of birds waiting for fish to die
or be boosted to the surface
as ice falls over their heads, a
total natural feast in the cold
waters of this lagoon.
Besides seeing brown-hooded
gulls, Domincan gulls and imperial shags, it is also possible to
see a couple of leopard seals
that live in the place, profusely
photographed by visitants.
After having lunch looking at
the glacier, the Skorpios starts
a last approach that allows
seeing wonderful panoramic
views of the lagoon: a great
farewell for the most important day of the journey. The
noise, the waves produced by
the dismembering glacier and
the mountains surrounding the
lagoon form a unique environment where absolutely everyone will be amazed by the beauty and magnificence of nature.
With the sun setting behind
the islands, the vessel moves
gently to the north to enter
the continent through a long
fjord some kilometers ahead.
This will be the attraction of
the next day.
FAR SOUTH
RELAXATION
The transit through the Quitralco fjord, which in mapudungun means “fire waters”, stops
at midnight, about 13 km after
leaving the Ferronave channel.
There the bravest don’t miss
the opportunity of enjoying
the night with a visit to the
hot springs of the place, the
only trace of humanity in the
middle of the wild geography.
The Quitralco hot springs don’t
have any overland connection
since its only transportation via
is the sea. In its first journeys
Constantino Kochifas, Skorpios’
founder, discovered the place,
and did well by constructing in
the middle of nowhere what today is a pleasant tourist center,
a key piece in the journey to
the San Rafael Lagoon.
The day starts with a trip on a
Hercules motor boat through
the inside of the fjord, moving
among its islands, knowing the
exuberant vegetation and the
fauna of the place, beautified
by Chilean nutrias and sea lions.
On the return, a very Chilean
launch will be waiting for the
travelers in the stove of the tourist center. Abundant empanadas, good wine and Patagonian
lamb will be the main attraction
as very national food.
Besides the offer of roofed and
open air hot springs, the traveler can go hiking to a viewpoint
that provides a wonderful view
of this place that was declared
as nature sanctuary in 1996
because of its pristine waters,
its impenetrable southern rainforests and the rich fauna that
surrounds it.
CONCLUDING A
CYCLE
The fourth day takes the vessel through the islands of the
Chiloé archipelago, reaching

the coasts of beautiful towns
like Chonchi, entering Castro
through a firth, where after
having lunch, travelers spend
the whole afternoon touring
the city.
After going up the steep central street of the city, a mustvisit place is the San Francisco
church, world heritage site,
which with its structure made
of native wood reflects the ingenuity of those old builders
who gave life to the very wellknown Chilotan churches.
Not very far from there you
will see the City Museum with
its collection of agricultural implements, replicas of patrimonial churches and an approach
to the local history through
dioramas.
Besides the must-see Chilotan
stilt houses, another attraction
of Castro is the great amount
of crafts that you can find in
the fair at the promenade, almost next to the port. Some
meters east at Blanco Encalada St. you will find premium
craft shops, where you will be
able to buy wool fabrics with
haute couture designs.
The sunset announces the last
sail. Adinner party with delicious sea food will be the farewell for the last night, while
on the deck the conversations
under the stars and a cocktail
start saying goodbye to a wonderful journey, full of natural
and cultural charms. The next
day the sun will announce the
arrival in Puerto Montt and the
luggage will be full of memories and emotions gained by
the peregrination through the
stunning waters of the San Rafael glacier and the long route
to get to it.
It is a completely recommendable cruise, both for the experience with nature and for
the service on board, full of an
almost homely hospitality, and
above all, full of very good cooking that travelers will never
stop praising.
