The readings and their
message
Numbers 11:25-29
The spirit of prophesy
given to Moses has also
been given to others.
Moses is the fountain of
prophesy and the first
prophet; yet when it is
conceded upon others,
Joshua becomes upset.
The place of the revelation was in the tent of gathering
situated just outside the campsite. Two people are named, but
others who were also outside the campsite received the spirit.
Joshua was critical that the spirit of prophesy had been given
to others, possibly because his own authority could be
threatened. This narration expresses the tension between the
leadership’s authority and those who exercised the ministry in
an extra official manner. Moses is not bothered nor does he try
to prevent that the two men, who received the spirit of
prophesy outside the camp in the tent of gathering, from
exercising their ministry.
James 5:1-6
The description of the difficulties of the rich does not include
the caution to change their ways to make up their fortune. This
reading is a wise teaching describing the consequences of a
certain lifestyle that does not adjust to the way of truth and
justice. In the Mediterranean world, all the wealth had already
been distributed. If someone suddenly acquired more, it was
suspected it had been done by taking advantage or abusing
others and in unethical ways. They could have appropriated
the salaries of those who were most vulnerable. Such a
practice is terrible for Israel and a reminder of the times of
slavery in Egypt. The parallel between the Israelites in Egypt
and the workers in this passage is clear; both groups work for
inhuman masters. Both groups cry out to God and He heard
them.
Mark 9:38-43. 45. 47-48
The reading of the gospel echoes the first reading from the Old
Testament. It challenges those who were not a part of the
group of disciples that were close to Jesus, but Jesus himself
advises them to let them preach. “For whoever is not against
us is for us.”

Las lecturas y su
mensaje
Números. 11:25-29
El espíritu de profecía
que se le había dado a
Moisés ha sido
concedido a otros
también. Moisés es la
fuente de la profecía y
el primer profeta; pero
cuando se les concede a
otros, Josué se disgusta.
El lugar de la revelación fue la tienda del encuentro, situada
fuera del campamento. Dos personas habían sido nombradas,
pero otros que estaban fuera también recibieron el espíritu.
Josué critica esa concesión de la profecía, quizá porque ve su
propia autoridad amenazada. Esta narración expresa la
tensión entre la autoridad de los líderes y aquellos que
ejercían el ministerio de manera extraoficial. A Moisés no le
molesta ni trata de impedir que los dos hombres que habían
recibido el espíritu de la profecía, no estando en el
campamento ni en la tienda del encuentro, ejerzan su
ministerio.
Santiago 5:1-6
La descripción de las dificultades de los ricos no incluye la
advertencia a cambiar sus caminos para que se componga su
fortuna. Esta lectura es una enseñanza sapiencial que describe
las consecuencias de un modo de vida que no se ajusta al
camino de la verdad y la justicia. En el mundo mediterráneo,
la riqueza ya estaba repartida. Si alguien repentinamente
adquiría más, se sospechaba que lo había hecho abusando de
los demás y de maneras poco éticas. Podrían haberse
apropiado de los salarios de los más vulnerables. Tal práctica
es terrible para Israel, que recuerda los tiempos de esclavitud
en Egipto. El paralelo entre los israelitas en Egipto y los
trabajadores de este pasaje está claro; ambos grupos
trabajaban para amos inhumanos; ambos grupos clamaron a
Dios y Dios los escuchó.
