DETECTIVE STORIES
Here are 5 short stories; they all
begin the same way, but their
writers had very different ideas
and a lot of imagination.
Have a look!!
The story of Bobby McFischer
He was sitting in an empty carriage of the
10.30 train to Colinbrook. Suddenly, the
lights went off and the train stopped with a
jolt. He jumped slightly of his seat at first,
but then he started panicking. Why were
they stopping ? It was a direct connection,
the weather had been great all day, the
train wasn’t supposed to cross any country
border, and as far as he knew, no war of
any kind had been declared in Europe !
The train had never been more silent.
Michel Miege was now feeling sharp
shivers making their way up his spine. And
considering the fact that he couldn’t see a
thing in the dark, he had his reasons to be
scared. He closed his eyes to reassure
himself. Eventually, after a minute or two,
he could hear what was surely the clicking
of the lights above him. He felt the train
was in movement again, and the tiny
glimpse of darkness that was passing
through his closed eyes switched to a slight
yellow tint. It was just a power cut ! he
thought, smiling. He opened his eyes,
ashamed, and saw his carriage again. But it
wasn’t empty anymore. Sitting in front of
him was Bobby McFischer, his former
biggest Chess rival. Michel Miege knew
this moment would come, one day, but this
was way sooner than he had excepted.
Suspense : Suspense is the word used to describe
the building up of a desire to know what could
happen next, often accompanied with fear and
foreboding. This makes the reader want to carry on
reading, or to buy a book when suspense is used on
the summary of its back cover.
The Whodunit: The word comes from the question
« who has done it ? ».
The Whodunit contains two stories: the story of the
crime and the story of the investigation.
The story of the crime ends before the second story
begins. The characters of the story of the
investigation don't act, they learn. In fact, nothing
can happen to them.
During the separation between the discovery of the
crime and the revelation of the killer, there is a slow
apprenticeship about the case, the clues are
examined cautiously.
« All right Michel. Let’s not waste any of
your precious time. I know you cheated at
our game at the Berlin Chess Tournament.
And I’ve got all the necessary evidence to
prove it. You know what that means, right
? » Michel Miege nodded. He knew
exactly what it meant : his 350 000$
award redistributed to the winner and his
name removed from the official World
Chess Classification, banished from any
chess tournament, and moreover, covered
with shame. He was speechless, and
trembling like an old man on extreme high
dose of caffeine. He had absolutely no clue
what he should be doing or saying now,
except asking himself a simple question,
repeatedly : Why had he cheated ? He was
a talented chess player, was enjoying
playing professionally… although maybe
it was the money that he’d always
wanted… But something wasn’t right.
Wasn’t it a bit abrupt to struggle that much
to find him, manage to stop the train to get
on and meet him, just to announce to him
that he had caught his tricks on the finals…
Bobby McFisher was indeed out of his
mind. He made sure the door leading to the
corridor was locked, came back, and
placed a small wooden chessboard on the
table, an analog game clock, as well as a
18mm fully-loaded handgun on the table,
pointing towards Michel’s head. Bobby
surely had a more extreme plan than that,
Michel thought. « One last game » Bobby
said. « Let’s play the game again, for real
this time. No more fooling around. »
Michel had obviously no choice but to
accept. After putting all the pieces in place,
Bobby rotated the gun a little, while
looking directly at his enemy, and adding
very clearly : « Play the best you can. »
So the game started. One move, two
moves. Clock ticking. Five moves, eight
moves, fourteen moves. Clock ticking.
Clock ticking. Michel Miege had a hard
time concentrating. He was practically
drowning in his own sweat. The game was
about tied, a few pawns down on each side.
Bobby McFischer wasn’t playing as well
as he was used to either. Nineteen moves,
thirty moves, Clock ticking. Forty-seventh
move. Michel couldn’t believe it. He
double-checked, triple-checked, and yet it
was still there : he had a winning move. A
simple move of his bishop could force the
opponent’s king into checkmate. But
would Bobby appreciate losing, again ?
Michel tried to think deeply, but it was
getting all mixed up : the chessboard, the
train, Bobby, the power cut, Berlin, the
bishop, the money, the cheating, the gun.
He remembered that Bobby had asked him
to play his best. So he reached for the
piece, moved it onto the right spot, and
pronounced with a weak voice,
« checkmate » … Bobby couldn’t believe
what he had just heard. He hadn’t seen that
move coming at all. He became mad with
rage, couldn’t take the pressure he was
inflicting on himself, and shot Michel
Miege dead. He immediately heard
screams coming from the surrounding
rooms.
People rumbled across the whole train. An
alarm went off, the train started to slow
down, blood was flooding from Michel’s
body onto the carpet, children were
whispering, screaming, panicking… It
wasn’t going at all like he had planned.
Everything went way too fast for Bobby, so
fast, that he wasn’t even realizing that his
fingers were sliding onto the trigger of his
gun.
The instant later, he was dead.

The silent murder
She was sitting in an empty carriage of the
10:30 train to Collinbrook. Suddenly, the
lights went off and the train stopped with a
jolt. The train driver informed the
passengers that the electricity had shut
down, and ordered them not to open the
doors. It was dark outside, and there was
steam on the window, but she had just seen
a light coming to the train. Maybe it was a
technician who was here to
repair the problem. Out of curiosity, she
opened the window and took a look
outside. She saw a motorcycle stopping in
front of her. She attempted to call the
motor driver, but she discerned that he was
targetting her with a silenced pistol. Then
she fell and was motionless. The murderer
closed the window and left the place.
“Collinbrook station! Please leave the train
without forgetting your belongings!”
The ticket controller checked in every
carriage in case someone had forgotten
their luggage. He entered the crime scene,
and discovered the woman lying on the
seat. He attempted to wake her up, then he
saw a hole right in her head. She had been
shot to death during her travel.

Desire for revenge
She was sitting in an empty
carriage of the 10:30 train to Collinbrook.
Suddenly the lights went off and the train
stopped with a jolt. Caroline was a famous
lawyer in the country. She built her
celebrity by winning an important trial.
The accused was Jon Smith, a gardener
who had been working for an old
billionaire lady. The police were
investigating her mysterious death and the
judge was about to clear him when
Caroline discovered that his alibi was
faulty. Then, he had been declared guilty
and sent to prison for 10 years.
Let's get back to our story. At first,
Caroline thought that someone was about
to come to explain to her what was going
on. But after 10 minutes, she began to feel
a bit scared. It was getting cold in the
carriage, she covered herself with her big
fur coat and watched through the window.
She saw the lights of Collinbrook shining
in the valley. She took her handbag and
walked to the carriage door to ask the other
travelers what was happening. The doors
were locked and Caroline started to hit
them with anger. Suddenly, she heard the
sound of broken glass, she turned back and
saw the silhouette of a man who was
breaking into the carriage. He was holding
a gun in his left hand and a flash light in
the other one. Caroline began to yell for
help and tried to open the door with
despair. The man turned the flash light on
in front of her so it was blinding her. She
was scared to death and fell on the floor.
The man laughed and walked slowly to
her. He put his arm on her forehead and
said :
« Ten years... You stole ten years of my
life. »
Caroline instantly understood who she was
facing. He turned the flash light on himself
then she saw his face. Some people say
that prison changes you but the man she
was looking at had no ressemblance with
the man she had sent to prison. His face
was colorless and there were many scars
on it. He had a disgusting beard which was
hiding his mouth.
He murmured with a controlled anger :
«My plan was perfect, I was about to get
half the inheritance, five billion dollars !
You ruined it all and I am here to get my
revenge.
-You deserved to be sent to jail ! You
murdered an old lady without any pang of
conscience ! You are a monster ! »
A tear dropped from her eye, she was
afraid and brave at the same time, her
profession had thaught her not to show her
emotions. He reloaded his gun and was
about to pull the trigger when suddenly,
the train restarted. He fell down and
dropped his weapon. Caroline stood up and
ran to the gun, she took it and saw
Mr.Smith running toward her. He took a
knife from his pocket and shouted madly :
«Die !!!»
Caroline was terrified , she closed her
eyes. The gunshot resonated, Jon Smith
was dead, lying on the floor, his face on
the ground.

A crime of passion
She was sitting in an empty
carriage of the 10.30 P.M train to
Collinbrook. Suddenly, the lights went off
and the train stopped with a jolt. Her heart
sped up for a second and she was so scared
that she brutally grabbed the arm of
someone who had just sat next to her. The
train had just braked suddenly but she felt
as if she had had a heart-attack. She let go
of the man’s arm who looked at her like
she was a madwoman; he stood up and
went out leaving her on her own. She was
trembling with fear, her hands, especially,
were. She was emotionally unstable
because of all the things that she had in
mind, so she couldn’t think straight. She
knew that it would happen, that she would
do it because she had to ; but she wasn’t a
killer, not yet.
She remembered everything that
had happened, how she had learnt about
her husband’s affair with the woman that
she thought of as her friend. It was a few
days ago. She had started to build a true
friendship with Jane that she had known
for a couple of weeks. Jane told her
everything in her life, even her love life.
She told her about a man that she had met
in a bank, she had fallen in love with him
and they had started to date. However, one
day she went to her husband’s office to
take some stuff and then, she found out a
letter stuck between two pages of a book.
Out of curiosity, she just took a look at the
letter and discovered with horror that it
was a love letter addressed to Charles, her
husband. Moreover, the sender who wrote
this dreadful letter was in all likelihood :
Jane Bingley. She was petrified and
overwhelmed with emotions. Promptly, her
pain turned into anger, she was mad with
rage. Charles had betrayed her and
furthermore with Jane ! Her best friend !
She wanted to hurt them bad.
“They have to pay, Jane and Charles have
to pay !”, she told herself.
She had always been a rational
person with a very concrete mind, but at
this moment she just couldn’t be like this.
She started to think about how the police
would resolve her crime of passion when
she would be gone. She had planned
everything : the place, the time, the murder
weapon, the victim, how she would be
alone with her, the way that she would kill
her… everything ! First, at 11 P.M, she
would bring her away from the passengers
pretending that it was such a coincidence,
that they were together on the same train
and she wanted to speak to her privately.
Then, when it was just themselves, she
would draw out a knife which she would
stick into Jane’s throat and watch her die.
She revolved her plan in her mind. It was
the only thing that she could focus on,
otherwise she would be frightened out of
her wits.
When the time came, she was
shaking with fright and she couldn’t
separate good from evil. She followed her
plan without even thinking ; she looked
hypnotized until she was alone with her.
According to the plan, she threatened her
with the knife. Jane was crying but no one
could hear them because of the noise of the
machine beside them.
Just before killing her, she wanted
to get more information from her about the
affair with Charles. Jane begged for her
life and told her that she didn’t know that
he was married. But she didn’t believe her
and she killed her. She stayed to watch her
die and when Jane breathed out her last
breath, a large vicious smile showed on her
face. She had no pang of conscience for
what she had just done. She turned out to
be a psychopath. “With the death of Jane,
Charles will suffer too. “, she thought.
Afterwards, she took the knife and killed
herself.

Revenge
He was sitting in an empty carriage
to the 10:30 train to Collinbrook.
Suddenly, the lights went off and the train
stopped with a jolt. Mr. Smith, our
detective, was surprised and decided to get
off the train to see what was happening.
Just in front of the locomotive, a powerful
grizzly was eating a big fish on the
railway: that was why the train had
stopped. The driver attempted to frighten
the grizzly to make it run away with a
whistle. When the bear left the railroad,
Mr. Smith shouted to the driver to start
again. The lights were switched on and Mr.
Smith got back into the train. He realized
that his glass was empty and he decided to
go to the dining car.
The train was composed of four
carriages; the first of them was a first class
carriage where Mr. Smith was sitting.
There were few people in the second and
the third ones. The last one was the dining
car.
Mr. Smith walked through the first
and the second cars, just before he entered
the third one, he saw a door open.
When the train had stopped, an
unknown passenger had entered through
this door. He had baited the grizzly with a
huge salmon. He had a reason for entering
this train: he wanted to get revenge.
Mr. Smith closed the door behind
him and stepped across the red carpet.
With horror he saw a leg protruding out of
the compartment-door and a pool of blood.
He dropped his glass which broke into
pieces. He saw a woman lying on the seats
who was dead and had been raped. The
murder weapon was on the floor.
He opened the door of the dining
car violently and everybody turned round
and looked at him. Mr. Smith looked all
around him and in the mirror, he saw a
man with a blood stain. But he couldn’t see
his features…

Secondes 2 – 3 – 4 – 7 – 8, Mrs Pedergnaga
We had to write a scenario based on “The Umbrella Man”, a short story by Roald
Dahl that we had studied in English class. Then we were supposed to stage it or shoot
a short film and play it before our classmates.
The Umbrella Man
The scene takes place in a street in London, on a rainy day. A mother and her daughter are
standing there getting wet and waiting for a taxi to come.
Mother : - We must get a taxi ! It feels as if this rain is never going to stop... Oh, I wish we
had a car with a chauffeur !
A man comes.
Man : - Excuse me, I do hope you will excuse me...
Mother (coldly): - Yes ?
Man : I wonder if I could ask a small favour of you, it's only a small favour.
The mother looks at him suspiciously.
That woman is a very suspicious person. With strange men, she has a golden rule which says
« the nicer a man seems to be, the more suspicious you must become ». This man was very
nice, polite, well spoken, well dressed... He was a real gentleman. Look at his shoes : they're
beautiful. The mother has another saying that she likes to use : « you can always spot a
gentleman by his shoes. »
Man : -The truth of the matter is I've got myself into a bit of a scrape. I need some help... Not
much, I assure you. It's almost nothing, in fact, but I do need it. You see, madam, old people
like me often become terribly forgetful.
The mother's chin is up and she still looks suspicious.
Man : - I beg you to believe, madam, that I am not in the habit of stopping ladies in the street
and telling them my troubles.
Mother : - I should hope not.
The daughter felt quite embarrassed by her mother's sharpness. She didn't say anything, but
she was thinking that the man was very old, that he was sweet and polite and he was in some
sort of trouble, so her mother could just help him instead of being so cold !
Man : - I've never forgotten it before...
Mother (sternly) : You've never forgotten what ?
Man: - My wallet, I must have left it in my other jacket. Isn't that the silliest thing to do ?
Mother : - Are you asking me to give you money ?
Man : -Oh, good gracious me, no ! Heaven forbid I should ever do that !
Mother (getting impatient): - Than what are you asking for ? Do hurry up, we're getting very
wet standing here !
Man : - I know you are, and that's why I'm offering you this umbrella of mine to protect you,
and keep foerver if... if only...
Mother : - If only what ?
Man : - If only you would give me in return a pound for my taxi-fare just to get me home.
Mother (still suspiciously) : - If you had no money in the first place, then how did you get
here ?
Man : - Every day I go for a long walk and I summon a taxi to take me home, but today I've
gone too far already. I don't think I could manage it on these silly old legs of mine.
The mother starts chewing her lower lip.
The mother started to melt, and the idea of getting an umbrella to protect her from the pouring
rain must have tempted her.
Man : - It's a lovely umbrella.
Mother: - So I've noticed.
Man : - It's silk.
Mother : - I can see that.
Man : - Then why don't you take it, madam ? It cost me over twenty pounds, I promise you.
But that's of no importance so long as I can get home and rest these old legs of mine.
The mother looks back at her daughter, who is watching her as well.
The mother wasn't sure what to do. Her daughter seemed to tell her not to take advantage of
an old man in this way.
Mother : - I don't think it's quite right that I should take a silk umbrella from you worth twenty
pounds. I think I'd just better give you the taxi-fare and be done with it.
Man : - No, no, no ! It's out of the question ! I wouldn't dream of it ! Not in a million years ! I
would never accept money from you like that ! Take the umbrella, dear lady, and keep the
rain off your shoulders !
The mother gives her daughter a triumphant look. She takes a pound from her purse, gives it
to the man. The man hands her the umbrella, pockets the pound, raises his hat and bows.
Man : - Thank you, madam, thank you.
He goes away.
Mother : - Aren't we lucky ? I've never had a silk umbrella before. I couldn't afford it.
The daughter, who had remained silent all this time, finally spoke.
Daughter : - Why were you so horrid to him in the beginning ?
Mother (looking satisfied) : - I wanted to satisfy myself he wasn't a trickster. And I did. He
was a real gentleman.
Daughter : - Yes, mummy.
Mother : - This will be a good lesson to you. Never rush things. Always take your time when
you're summing someone up. Then you'll never make mistakes.
Daughter : - There he goes. Look !
Mother : - Where ?
Daughter : - There !
She points at the man who is crossing a street very fast.
Daughter : - He doesn't look very tired to me, does he to you, mummy ?
The mother looks annoyed.
Daughter : - He doesn't look as though he's trying to get a taxi either.
The mother stands still, staring at the man who is in a terriffic hurry.
Mother : - He's up to something.
Daughter : - But what ?
Mother : - I don't know. But I'm going to find out. Come with me.
The mother takes her daughter's arm and they cross the street in order to follow the old man.
Mother : - Can you see him ?
Daughter : - Yes. There he is. He's turning right down the next street.
The mother and her daughter kept following the man, trying hard to keep up with him. They
were nearly running, but he was still faster then them !
Mother : - What is he up to ?
Daughter : - What if he turns around and sees us ?
Mother (determined) : - I don't care if he does. He lied to us. He said he was too tired to walk
any further and now he's practically running us off our feet ! He's a barefaced liar ! He's a
crook !
The man turns left, then right.
Mother : - I'm not giving up now.
Daughter : - He's disappeared ! Where's he gone ?
Mother : - He went in that door ! I saw him ! Into that house ! Great heavens, it's a pub ! Let's
watch from outside.
Daughter (pointing at the man) : - There he is, over there.
The man gives a pound to the barman in exchange for a glass full of whisky.
Mother : - That's my pound ! By golly, he's got a nerve !
Daughter : - What's in the glass ?
Mother : - Whisky. Neat whisky. That must be a treble whisky.
Daughter : - And what's a treble whisky, mummy ?
Mother : - Three times the normal measure.
Daughter : - Well, that was a jolly expensive drink !
Mother : - It's ridiculous ! Fancy paying a pound for something you swallow in one go !
Daughter : - It cost him more than a pound, mummy. It cost him a twenty pound silk
umbrella.
Mother : - So it did. He must be mad !
The man licks his moustache.
Daughter : - Oh, that was disgusting !
The mother didn't say anything, but she thought the same thing.
The man reaches the hatstand and puts his hat and coat on. Before going away, he steals
discreetly an umbrella from near the coat-rack.
Mother (shocked) : - Did you see that ! Did you see what he did !
Daughter (whispering) : - Hush ! He's coming out !
They lower the umbrella to hide their faces. He doesn't see them and opens his new umbrella
scurrying off down the street.
Mother : - So that's his little game !
Daughter (ironically) : - Neat. Super.
They follow him back to the main street where they first met him. He exchanges his umbrella
for a pound, just as de did for them, and than goes in the opposite direction.
They were very surprised. First, they thought he was a real gentleman, and now he appears to
be a vulgar crook who cheated them ! They were astonished, and now the daughter has doubts
as far as her mother's sayings are concerned.
Mother : - You see how clever he is ! He never goes to the same pub twice !
Daughter : - He could go on doing this all night.
Mother : - Yes, of course. But I bet he prays like mad for rainy days.

ganan. Es una ciudad típica de México porque

¿Qué opinan los espectadores?
Noa: Me encanta esta película porque hay
muchas emociones, momentos felices y
San Angel.
Es una historia apasionante, habla de leyendas,
tradiciones, amor, amistad y valores familiares.

individuos.
incontrolable. Finalmente, actuando de esa
manera, esta misma persona perjudica a su
entorno y a sí mismo. Por eso pensamos que el
poder no hace necesariamente feliz.
Romane Binsse y Angelika Kiszczak

herencia. Así están presentes otros temas: los
celos y la deseperanza.

Léxico :

Para mí este dibujo defiende la
libertad de expresión y muestra la
violencia que los terroristas utilizan
y el coraje de los periodistas que
tienen, para defenderse, un lápiz lo
que puede ser un arma formidable.
Ese dibujo quiere decir que los terroristas
