“Cast thy care upon the Lord, and He shall sus

T
he first reading is from Habakkuk, a strange
book that takes place after the defeat of the
Judean army at the Battle of Carchemish,
where King Josiah, a young charismatic king everyone loved had been killed. The nation went into
mourning, and depression. How to interpret bad
things? One way is to say, "We're being punished!"
And that was the message of Habakkuk. Babylon was
God's "rod" to chasten Judah. The Gospel cautions
people not to do good things for a reward--otherwise
we turn "heaven" into nothing but a "carrot before the
donkey." It cheapens God, religion and us. Rather,
our lives are to be dedicated to the King of Kings
because of Who He is. The second reading is about
our responsibility for our own spiritual growth. The
author says to the young Timothy, "my imposition of
hands," i.e., the sacrament of ordination was a Gift
from God, one that brings courage and prophecy, but
only if you work with it! God's gifts aren't "magic,"
they need our cooperation! So, how do we put those
three messages together? Maybe, look at the hard and
bitter "stuff" that's happening in your life...you were
given Gifts in Baptism, in Confirmation, at Eucharist,
during Reconciliation, and on hearing and studying
the Word--but these "Gifts" need your cooperation-there's work for you to do--not to get the reward
of heaven, but to serve the One Who made you to
serve Him. So… can we be about that project this
week?

toma lugar después de la derrota del ejército de

para someter a Judá. El Evangelio les advierte a la gente a que no hagan un bien para un premio-de otra manera convertimos al “cielo” en nada más que nada menos
a “una zanahoria ante un burro.” Hace ver barato a
Dios, a la religión y a nosotros. Más bien, nuestras
vidas deberían de ser dedicadas al Rey de Reyes por
Quién Él es. La segunda lectura se trata sobre nuestra
responsabilidad para nuestro propio crecimiento espiritual. El autor le dice al joven Timoteo, “mi imposición
de manos,” es decir, el sacramento de ordenación fue
un Regalo de Dios, uno que trae valentía y profecía,
¡pero sólo si trabajan con esto! ¡Los regalos de Dios no
son “mágicos,” necesitan nuestra cooperación! Entonces, ¿cómo ponemos a estos tres mensajes juntos? A lo
mejor, vean a las cosas difíciles y amargas que están
pasando en sus vidas… se les dieron Regalos en el
Bautizo, en la Confirmación, en la Eucaristía, en la Reconciliación, y en escuchando y estudiando la Palabrapero estos “Regalos” necesitan su cooperación- hay
trabajo por hacer- de no obtener el premio del cielo,
pero de servir a Aquel Quien los hizo para servirle.
Entonces… ¿podemos enfocarnos en el proyecto esta
semana?

ur readings today speak of “Faith” and the
gift it is from God. It is worth fighting for
and speaking about. We certainly saw this
on our trip to the Holy Land. There you see many
“faiths”, each held strongly by its people. It is a bit
disconcerting at times to see faith filled people
fighting over schedules, rituals and the right to be
God’s presence in a place. It really makes you
wonder if this is what God really wants!! And yet
it is being done by people that are truly in love
with God and believe strongly in their faith. I remember when I visited the Holy Land the first
time and we were told not to make judgments’ because we didn’t have all the truth. I saw this again
when I went to Israel, and see it here as well. Let
us live our faith and let God do the judgments.
uestras lecturas el día de hoy nos hablan de
la “Fe” y de que es un regalo de Dios. Vale
la pena el luchar y el hablar de ella. En verdad lo vimos en nuestro viaje a Tierra Santa. Ahí ven
a diferentes tipos de fe, y cada fe es acogida fuerte
por su gente. Es un poco inquietante a veces de ver a
personas de fe pelear sobre horarios, rituales y el derecho de estar en la presencia de Dios en un lugar.
¡En verdad te hacen preguntarte si esto es en vedad
lo que Dios quiere! Sin embargo, esto lo hacen personas que en verdad están enamoradas con Dios y
creen con firmeza en su fe. Recuerdo cuando visité a
Tierra Santa la primera vez y se nos pidió que no juzguemos porque no tenemos toda la verdad. Lo vi esto
de nuevo al ir a Israel, y lo vemos aquí también. Vivamos nuestra fe y dejemos que Dios haga los juicios.

open door policies. Parents and guardians have
the primary responsibility for protecting their children from all potential harm. When choosing a nursery, daycare center or school, parents should inspect
the building and grounds to make sure there are no
areas where children play or work that are “off limits” to parents. Such facilities should have a policy
that welcomes parents to visit the center or school
without prior appointment.

DIACONATE FORMATION OFFICE
The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting an
information meeting for all men who are interested
in finding out more about becoming a permanent
deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate Formation Office will be present to explain the role of the deacon
in the Church, to explain the Diaconate Formation
Program, and to answer any questions that participants might have. Men must be between the ages of
30 and 60 years to enter the formation program. It
is important for men who are married to attend with
their wives. The next information meeting will be
held on Sunday, October 27, 2013, from 2:00 p.m.
