FROM THE OGLE OFFICE
Dear Friends:
On the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, the Brooklyn Diocese observes “Lay Ministry Sunday”, this year held on February 15. Lay
Ministry Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate and affirm the contributions of the laity who serve and enrich the life and mission of their
parish as liturgical ministers, ministers of consolation, members of the finance and pastoral councils, adult or youth catechists, welcome
ministry, ministers to the sick and homebound, and so many other ways. But what do we mean by the term “Laity”? Wikipedia summarizes:
‘Here is the definition of laity is that given in the Code of Canon Law:
‘By divine institution, there are among the Christian faithful in the Church sacred ministers who in law are also called clerics; the other
members of the Christian faithful are called lay persons.
There are members of the Christian faithful from both these groups who, through the profession of the evangelical counsels by
means of vows or other sacred bonds recognized and sanctioned by the Church, are consecrated to God in their own special way and contribute to the salvific mission of the Church; although their state does not belong to the hierarchical structure of the Church, it nevertheless belongs to its life and holiness.
‘The narrower sense in which the Second Vatican Council gave instruction concerning the laity is as follows in Lumen Gentium:
‘The term laity is here understood to mean all the faithful except those in holy orders and those in the state of religious life specially approved by the Church. These faithful are by baptism made one body with Christ and are constituted among the People of God; they are in
their own way made sharers in the priestly, prophetical, and kingly functions of Christ; and they carry out for their own part the mission of
the whole Christian people in the Church and in the world.
‘In this narrower sense, the Council taught that the laity's specific character is secularity: they are Christians who live the life of
Christ in the world. Their role is to sanctify the created world by directing it to become more Christian in its structures and systems: "the
laity, by their very vocation, seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God".
The laity are full members of the Church, fully share in Church's purpose of sanctification, of "inner union of men with God", acting with
freedom and personal responsibility and not as mere agents of the hierarchy. Due to their baptism, they are members of God's family, the
Church, and they grow in intimate union with God, "in" and "by means" of the world. It is not a matter of departing from the world as the
monks and the nuns do that they sanctify themselves; it is precisely through the material world sanctified by the coming of the God made
flesh, i.e. made material, that they reach God. Doctors, mothers of a family, farmers, bank tellers, drivers, by doing their jobs in the world
with a Christian spirit are already extending the Kingdom of God. According to the repeated statements of Popes and lay Catholic leaders,
the laity should say "we are the Church," in the same way that the saints said that "Christ lives in me.” Lay involvement takes diverse
forms, including participation in the life of the parish, confraternities, lay apostolates, secular institutes, and lay ecclesial movements.’
Many in our parish are lay leaders and volunteer in liturgical, catechistical, social and administrative roles, and we are grateful to
them. May their tribe increase! We are in particular need at this time of additional pastoral ministers, ushers and catechists. I especially
appeal to the many newcomers to our parish who may be able to serve in these capacities. Please see me or one of our staff about offering your service to the community. We also have some tickets left for the February 7 Pastoral Assembly of lay leaders for our deanery
parishes. See me if you would like to join us.
God love you,
Msgr. Ogle
DE EL PASTOR
Queridos Hermanos,
lleguen a Dios.
apostolados, institutos seculares y movimientos laicales eclesiales.
Dios Les Cuida,
Msgr. Ogle.

WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE
In 1997, Pope John Paul II called for consecrated life to
be promoted throughout the universal Church. He declared February 2, the feast of the Presentation of the
Lord, to be observed as World Day for Consecrated Life
(WDCL). In the United States, when February 2 is not on
a Sunday, we celebrate on the Sunday after the Presentation. This year WDCL is observed on February 8, the
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life invites
all the Church to reflect on the role of Consecrated Life
within the Christian community. Those who choose to
live a consecrated life do so for the sake of the gospel.
Some Christian women and men respond to God’s call to
become followers of Jesus through profession of vows
and a life dedicated to prayer and service. They live out
the consecrated life in different ways. Religious sisters,
nuns, brothers, religious priests, and monks consecrate
their lives through their profession of the evangelical
vows and live as part of a community. Single lay people
may choose to be consecrated virgins and make private
vows to the local bishop as they live out their vocation in
various walks of life. Secular institutes are another form
of living the consecrated life as single people. Those who
become followers of Jesus through the consecrated life
bless the Church.

For Christian families: may the Lord who has sealed the
union of husband and wife with his presence, make our
families cenacles of prayer and ardent communities of
life and love, after the example of the Holy Family of
Nazareth, we pray
For couples undergoing difficulties: may the Lord, rich in
mercy, be present to them through the Church’s
motherly care and concern in showing understanding
and patience in their journey towards pardon and
reconciliation, we pray
For families who, for the sake of the Gospel, are forced
leave their fatherland: may the Lord who endured exile
with Mary and Joseph, comfort them with his grace and
open for them paths of fraternal charity and human
solidarity, we pray

collaborators with parents in transmitting the faith and
the raising their children, we pray

welcomed them and made them a model for entering
the Kingdom of heaven, inspire a respect for life in the
womb and programs in raising children which conform to
the Christian outlook towards life, we pray
For young people: may the Lord, who made holy the
Wedding at Cana, lead them to discover the beauty of
the sacredness and inviolability of the family in God’s
plan and sustain engaged couples as they prepare for
