Developmental Point of View
ECE 51 & 168 The Developmental Point of View The Developmental Point of View means understanding that growth is orderly, structured and predictable. A child is a living organism, subject to the same laws of growth as every other species in nature, following a cycle of development specific to all humans. In this way each child is like every other child. Children walk before they run. Children think concretely before thinking abstractly. The Developmental Point of View means respecting the fact that every child has her/his own individual rate and pattern of growth. In this way each child is different from every other child. Children learn to walk at different ages... some toe in, some toe out. Who would dare legislate the age at which children should walk or whether toe in or toe out is better? The Developmental Point of View means accepting the child as a total action system: the physical, emotional, social and intellectual components are interdependent and support each other. These components are not separate, and one cannot be stretched ahead of the other without upsetting a complex and delicate balance. A child tends to seek the balance necessary for his time and space at any given moment. The Developmental Point of View means appreciating that readiness for any given task has roots in the biological and maturational processes of the individual. We cannot produce it, nor hurry it, nor ignore it. When a child is ready, she will be born walk talk write read The Developmental Point of View means walking hand in hand with nature... respecting the whole child. The Developmental Point of View means promoting educational programs in terms of the child’s development as it is now, not in terms of where one thinks it should be. Specifically, this implies: ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... child-initiated, child-directed activities... frequent opportunities for child to make choices open-ended materials and activities available, freely accessible and optional play as a central context for learning play-based, child-directed curriculum instead of a didactic (instructional) approach small-group instruction... limited proportion of teacher-directed activities teacher as guide and facilitator, expanding upon child’s play themes and interests literacy-promoting materials, activities and events guiding the child’s behavior in collaboration with the child, respecting the child’s point of view, recognizing the healthy impulse behind his behavior, recognizing the limitations of his thinking, and at all times avoiding any practice that could diminish the child’s self-esteem With all this in mind, in your opinion, what would be key characteristics of a developmentally appropriate classroom environment (or family child care home environment)? Write in journal and come to class prepared to discuss. 2
