Food, Friends and a surprise or two. Join us!!
Sometimes we know “in our gut” that a family child care program is good. With the use of the
Family Child Care Environmental Rating Scale tool, we can prove that a program is good. FCCERS is
used in many programs in the United States and around the world for program assessment. The Rating Scale emphasizes
positive relationships, health and safety, and a stimulating learning environment. The Scale has a complete training
program and includes a thorough assessment of the environment, including furniture and equipment, educational
materials, and educator skill and behavior. The FCCERS is designed to assess family child care programs conducted in
a provider’s home for children from infancy through school-age.
Any provider in our Network must pass with an average score of 5 or better and once a provider is evaluated, the Child
Development staff work with them on an improvement plan. This might include getting better materials, attending
workshops, or getting mulch donated for playground safety as we did this year! I am so pleased that the average scores
have improved since last year.
The seven categories that are reviewed are:

worked so hard this year to improve their scores. Keep up the good work!

HELP A CHILD LEARN TO READ!
VOLUNTEER TODAY FOR SCHOOLS OF HOPE
In Sonoma County, over 50% of third grade students are reading below
grade level. Nearly 80% of third grade students, who are also English
Language Learners, are reading below grade level. Research shows that
a students who is not at least a moderately skilled reader by third
grade is unlikely to graduate from high school.
The Schools of Hope program is an early intervention model for
children who are struggling with reading. The United Way of the
Wine Country, in partnership with NBLC and other organizations, is
providing this program in Sonoma County. The core components of the
program include one-to-one literacy tutoring, volunteer recruitment
and training, parent engagement, and rigorous program evaluation.
Currently 46% of third graders are reading at grade level. Our goal is to
increase that percentage to 75% by 2015.
Become a tutor, and in as little as 1 hour a week, make a difference
in a child’s life.
Register for an orientation session today! Contact Barbara Fisher at the
Volunteer Center at 707.573.3399 or [email protected]. For
more information about Schools of Hope, visit:

588-5026.
OUR REFERRAL POLICY
RIVER TO COAST CHILDREN’S SERVICES’ referral policy is based on respecting parental choice. Responsibility for selecting child care rests with each parent. RCCS assists
parents in finding the widest range of available child care and offers information to help families evaluate available child care options. A RIVER TO COAST CHILDREN’S
SERVICES referral is not a recommendation or a guarantee of quality care. Parents should carefully interview and check references of potential child care providers
before leaving a child in their care.

“Brain Development & Emotional Response”
What current brain research tells us about how very young children develop
relationships and learn to express feelings appropriately.
October 13, 2011
6:15-8:15 PM
At River to Coast Children’s Services
16300 1st Street (in downtown Guerneville)
MAin tOPiCS DiSCuSSED:
What are some things in the life of a child that can affect brain
development?
What research shows about promoting brain growth in infants and
toddlers.
What we can do as child care providers to support infants and
toddlers having healthy social and emotional relationships….and
discourage the biting, pushing and grabbing that can be a part of this
age.
How feeling secure and safe supports learning and development in
very young children.
Using the foundations we will look at what relationships mean to an
infant/toddler---with you and the other children in your care.
