20% 15% 200.000 150.000 10% 100.000 5% Pasajeros / pax Capacidad / Capacity Interannual variation pax (%) no v/ 13 de c/ 13 -5% se pt /1 3 oc t/1 3 0% 0 ju l/1 3 au g/ 13 50.000 m ay /1 3 ju n/ 13 de c/ 13 no v/ 13 se pt /1 3 oc t/1 3 ju l/1 3 au g/ 13 -40% m ay /1 3 ju n/ 13 0 ap r/ 13 -30% m ar /1 3 200.000 25% 250.000 ap r/ 13 400.000 30% 300.000 m ar /1 3 -20% 350.000 fe b/ 13 -10% 600.000 35% OBSERVATORIO BARCELONA 400.000 ja n/ 13 800.000 450.000 pax / capacity 10% 0% ja n/ 13 fe b/ 13 pax / capacity 1.000.000 40% 500.000 interannual variation (%) OBSERVATORIO BARCELONA 1.200.000 interannual variation (%) 20% 1.400.000 Interannual variation capacity (%) Fuente: Elaboración GPA a partir de datos de AENA y Innovata / Source GPA using Innovata and AENA data • Barcelona ended the year with positive numbers in passage and ca- pacity, consolidating its 35 million passengers. The strong growth in the last quarter of the year ensured a positive total, offsetting the fall in the first quarter of the year. Europe (+5%) and international traffic (+11%) did offset the continued decline of the Spanish traffic (-11%) which accumulates 23 months of decline. The capacity additions in the fourth quarter to European destinations (+28%) and the rest of the world (+31%) exceed by far the decrease in the Spanish capacity (-1%) and make the total capacity at the airport grow by 20 % in this last quarter. The large increase in capacity may cause problems of overcapacity on some routes in 2014. • SPAIN continues to fall, although the trend shows signs of starting to stabilize at current levels. In December the capacity of Barcelona with Spain grew for the first time since November 2011. The poor performance of Madrid (-12%, total pax below 40M) can make Barcelona overcome it in the coming years if the growth differential between them is maintained. • EUROPE. Dynamic market in continued growth. Growth engine for Barcelona. It grows especially the passage to London and Moscow. Overcapacity on some routes for 2014. • INTERCONTINENTAL. Direct intercontinental traffic is growing strongly and now represents 8% of total airport traffic, one point more than in 2012. The growth is specially strong towards the North African and Middle East markets. Progressive lowering of seasonality on the routes. Very noticeable increase in capacity. • In 2013 Vueling consolidates its dominant position in the market. Its market share at the airport grows 4.8 points and it is similar to those of airlines that dominate a major European hub like London Heathrow or Frankfurt even without performing long haul airports. The growth of BCN will be linked closely to the development of this airline. • On the other hand, Ryanair and Easyjet decrease their market share and passage in Barcelona (-2.7 and 0.7 points respectively) with their reduced presence in the Spanish market, especially in domestic routes. • Iberia loses 2 ranks and becomes the sixth airline at the airport, being clearly surpassed by Lufthansa and Air Europa. Its decreased its capacity by 42% in only route that it still operates from BCN (Madrid). The other flag carriers have differing performances in BCN during 2013. • Vueling, Air Europa and British Airways grow significantly. Air Europa clearly decreases its capacity to Menorca and Ibiza but increases its trunk routes to Madrid and Palma de Mallorca. Norwegian thrives (36% growth) and is likely to continue to improve rankings in the coming years since it established a new base at the airport. • 2013 has seen sharp declines in the Spanish passenger routes. Madrid lost a full point of market share. The retreat or capacity reduction of Ryanair and Easyjet from many Barcelona routes affects prices and the local connectivity between these destinations and Barcelona. Many routes now have a single operator, that can act under monopoly conditions. • By contrast , European destinations to big cities continue to grow. London (LHR+LGW) grew by 18% due to the increase in London Gatwick with the addition of 4 airlines flying the BCN route (including British Airways). Paris (CDG+ORY) maintains a constant demand while Frankfurt grows significantly with Vueling’s entry in the route. • Moscow Domodedovo grows 25 % in 2013 and is just outside the Top15 ranking. Russia is the fastest growing medium-haul market in recent years along with Turkey. • Qatar Airways and Emirates are the fastest growing companies • Las compañías del Golfo lideran el crecimiento y ya ocupan la • Gulf airlines lead the growth and already occupy the 3rd and 4th 3ª y 4ª posición en el ranking. American Airlines consolidates its U.S. growth and its 7th position in the ranking. positions in the cargo ranking. The most affected airline by this growth is Singapore Airlines, that sees its load lower by 23%. This decline is also caused by a reduction in capacity (and frequencies) in the BCN - MXP - SIN route. Aeroflot confirms its good form, even if its traffic is eminently an exporter one: Barcelona progressively imports more freight from Russia. • IAG group experiences a sharp cargo fall (-48%), mainly to the decreases of Iberia (-51%) and British Airways (- 74%) despite the increased cargo of Vueling (+19%). Considering the whole group as a single airline, it would be ninth in the ranking of Barcelona’s air freight. • Delta Airlines seems to have problems recovering its traffic in summer despite the reopening of its seasonal flights; having closed their regular air links during the winter season, traffic seems to have diverted the cargo to other operators. • Barcelona is the fifth largest city in Europe by origin and desti- nation (O&D) passenger traffic behind London, Paris, Istanbul and Moscow, clearly outperforming Rome and Madrid in the ranking. It maintains its position in the European airport ranking. • Madrid falls significantly and definitively leaves the group of main European hubs. Although its outlook for 2014 is again positive, is unlikely to return to this group in the coming years. Istanbul consolidates its position among the major airports and can continue growing in the following years. Moscow airports grow 10% and are likely to become part of the top 10 airport in the next years. • If a growth differential of 2 or 3 points is maintained between BCN and MAD, it is likely that in the next years Barcelona will overtake Madrid as the first Spanish airport by traffic volume.
