Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Building this habit starts with the first day of school so
they can learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance is critical to school success.
All absences must be excused within three school days after the student returns to school. To excuse an absence at McLoughlin School, please send a not or email to [email protected] Absences can be excused for the following reasons:
Illness ( a doctor’s note is required if absent for 6 days or more)
Health care appointments (as much as possible, try to schedule these outside the school day)
Emergencies
Religious Activity
Court Appearance
Pre-arranged approved activity (must be approved prior to absence by the school principal)
All absences, whether excused or unexcused, become a problem for student success. Ten or more unexcused absences within the
school year will result in the school district enforcing the compulsory school attendance law through truancy court.

Supplemental Education Services (SES)
As part of our School Improvement efforts this year, we are able to offer free SES tutoring in reading and/or math outside of the school
day for any student who is eligible for free and reduced lunch. This program is paid for by our district’s Title I funds and allows parents/
guardians to select a tutoring company from a list of state approved providers.
The providers offer tutoring at a variety of places, including school, in the home, on-line, or at a community location. Transportation is not
provided and is the responsibility of the parent.
Applications and a list of providers for SES free tutoring are available at your child’s school and must be returned by Friday, October 9,
2015.
The Mac Core Four
McLoughlin has undergone a change this year with the school-wide expectations. The new expectations are easier for students to remember and are focused on four values we believe to be crucial to
the learning environment at McLoughlin Middle School. The four values of the Mac Core Four are respect, responsibility, effort, and safety.
During the first two weeks of school, students
were engaged in lessons teaching each of the values and then participated in lessons explaining
how to demonstrate the four values around the
school. Also, McLoughlin teamed with the district
transportation by having all students load a bus
and take part in a lesson learning about the bus
expectations of respect, responsibility, safety, and
cooperation.
Please ask your child to explain The Mac Core
Four.
Fit Bits
Did you know?
Preteens and teenagers spend on average 7 1/2 hours a day using some form of technology which include iPads, iPods,
cell phones, watching TV, and video games. Each day your child participate in 30 minutes of exercise during Physical Education Class but this is only half of the activity they need on a daily basis. Preteens/teenagers need at least 60 minutes of
activity a day. Outside of school encourage your child to participate in a physical activity they enjoy such as basketball,
soccer, riding a bike, workout video, etc. Getting enough physical activity each day can reduce stress; increase self-esteem,
and increase strength and energy.

Tour Marshall, Walnut Grove Elementary School
On Friday, October 30, Vancouver Public Schools Superintendent Steve Webb will host his first patron tour of the 2015-2016 school year.
The tour will provide an in-depth look at the dynamic learning opportunities at Marshall and Walnut Grove Elementary Schools.
The tour of Marshall Elementary School will highlight its new Family-Community Resource Center, unique community partnerships, the Advancement Via Individual Determination program for third- through fifth-graders and an early childhood learning program.
At Walnut Grove, visitors will visit an Imagine Learning Lab that supports language acquisition for English language learners and a full-day
kindergarten classroom. Visitors also will learn how an elementary school creates a culture of respect and caring by establishing clear behavioral expectations and building positive relationships among the students and staff.
The free tour will begin and end at the Bates Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Rd. The tour starts at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at
1 p.m. After visiting Marshall and Walnut Grove, guests have the option of enjoying a student musical performance and a delicious lunch
prepared by culinary arts students. Lunch is available for $4 per person.
Everyone is welcome, but space is limited. Visit www.vansd.org/visit-vps or contact Sue Knable at 360-313-4720 to sign up.
