EDITORIAL
ere we are for a new winter edition of our
magazine. For those who haven’t met us
yet, the magazine has been in circulation
for seven years in Ibiza and Formentera and for
four years in Miami. This special Miami edition
is designed as a guide for people coming from
Ibiza to enjoy this beautiful city in March, during
the WMC and Ultra Music Festival.
Like last year, we will be at the Congress Hotel
South Beach for our events called CASA DE
IBIZA. It will be a meeting place where you’ll
find “Hierbas Ibicencas” and enjoy excellent sea
views from the hotel’s rooftop pool.
We will have great music with excellent
promoters, and this year we will also have the
honour of showcasing two of America’s best
DJs on the cover of N&D: Dubfire and Seth
Toxler.

quí estamos, en una nueva edición
invernal de nuestra revista. Para los
que no nos conocéis todavía, sabed
que la revista lleva siete años en Ibiza y
Formentera, y cuatro años también en Miami a
través de esta edición especial, que pretende
ser una guía para los ibicencos que vienen a
esta hermosa ciudad en marzo, durante los
eventos WMC y Ultra Music Festival.
Como el año pasado, estaremos en el
Congress Hotel South Beach presentando
nuestros actos, que llamamos CASA IBIZA.
Será un punto de encuentro en el que podréis
encontrar las Hierbas Ibicencas y disfrutar
de unas excelentes vistas al mar desde la
piscina en la azotea del hotel.
Tendremos buena música y excelentes
promotores. Además, este año tenemos el
gran honor de presentaros en la portada de
N&D a dos de los mejores DJ americanos:
Dubfire y Seth Toxler.

I remember the first time I listened to
Dubfire in 2001 (along with his former partner
Sharam in Deep Dish), one of the world’s
most beautiful clubs of all time – Terrrazza
in Barcelona. I felt the same emotions again
last summer at Monegros Desert Festival, at
all the ENTER parties (but why did he play so
early?), not to mention at the DC10 (I think he
plays his best music here because he feels at
home…)
Seth, however, has become an accomplished
all-round artist and I was pleased to hear him
several times last summer at DC10 in Ibiza, as
well as at private parties.
This is why we’ve gone with a play on words
using the “King” and “Prince” of techno...
Recuerdo la primera vez que escuché a
Dubfire en 2001 (junto a su socio Sharam
de Deep Dish), en uno de los clubes más
bonitos del mundo y de todos los tiempos,
La Terrrazza de Barcelona. Volví a sentir las
mismas emociones el verano pasado en
el Monegros Desert Festival, en todas las
ediciones de ENTER (¿pero por qué siempre
pinchaba tan pronto?), por no hablar del DC10
(donde, en mi opinión, es capaz de dar lo
mejor de sí mismo como si estuviera en su
casa...)
Seth, en cambio, se ha convertido en
un artista completo y tuve el placer de
escucharle en varias ocasiones el pasado
verano en el DC10 de Ibiza, así como en
fiestas privadas.

Where are you
originally
from?
I was born in Mashad which is a very small
town in Iran. I was raised there till I was 7
years old, then I moved to the USA. I’ve never
been back to Iran.
Do you remember the first time you played
on the white island?
Sure. It was at Pacha around 1996 or 1997.
Roberto and Ernesto from Zenith (who are
now working with Marco Carola as part of his
Music On residency at Amnesia) were the
guys that made us famous. I recall spending
the week with our (then) girlfriends at this
beautiful villa which belonged to the owner
of L’éléphant. We had personal chefs as well
and got so used to life there that we hardly
ventured out of the villa to explore the island
and its legendary nightlife. But once we did,
we couldn’t believe the sights and sounds. It
was unlike any place we’d ever been before. It
still remains as magical as ever.
¿De dónde
eres?
Nací en Mashad, una ciudad muy pequeña de
Irán. Me crié allí hasta los 7 años, cuando me
fui a EE.UU. Nunca he vuelto a Irán.
¿Recuerdas la primera vez que tocaste en
Ibiza?
Por supuesto. Fue en Pacha en 1996 o 1997.
Roberto y Ernesto de Zenith (que ahora
están trabajando con Marco Carola para la
residencia de Music On en Amnesia) nos
hicieron famosos. Recuerdo pasar la semana
con nuestras novias de entonces en una
espléndida villa que pertenecía al dueño
de L’Elephant. Teníamos también chefs
personales, así que me acostumbré tanto a
vivir en esa casa que no salía a explorar la isla
y su legendaria vida nocturna. Pero una vez
que salimos, nos maravillaron las vistas y los
sonidos. No se parecía a ningún lugar en el
que había estado antes. Todavía la isla sigue
siendo tan mágica como siempre.
t*#*;"t You are a veteran of WMC/Ultra Music
Festival, what do you enjoy most about it?
Well I wouldn’t say that I’m a veteran of the
festival because there were many years,
especially during the period of time when
I went solo, that they never booked me for
whatever reason. The politics of dancing I
guess. Carl Cox had to invite me to be a guest
on his stage, that marked my return to UMF.
I had a great time and couldn’t believe how
the festival had grown over the years! I’m
obviously excited to be back again this year,
playing on a more intimate stage along with
a few of my SCI+TEC artists, Carlo Lio and
SHADED.

How do you spend your time when you are
not in the studio or touring?
Well, personal time is pretty rare but I do
enjoy staying in and cooking, catching up with
friends in both Washington, DC and Barcelona,
where I’m based over the summer months.
I’m also a rabid film junkie so try to see as
much as I can at home or in the cinema.

Eres un veterano de la WMC y el Ultra
Music Festival: ¿qué es lo que más te
gusta de este festival?
Bueno, yo no diría que soy un veterano
del festival, porque durante muchos años,
especialmente cuando empecé a pinchar
solo, no me contrataron. Será por su política,
supongo. Carl Cox tuvo que invitarme a
pinchar con él en su momento y eso marcó
mi regreso al UMF. Me lo pasé de maravilla y
¡no podía creer cómo el festival había crecido
a lo largo de los años! Estoy emocionado por
volver este año a tocar en un escenario más
íntimo junto con algunos de mis artistas de
SCI+TEC: Carlo Lio y SHADED.
¿Qué haces en tu tiempo libre cuando no
estás en el estudio o de gira?
Bueno, casi nunca tengo tiempo libre, pero
me gusta quedarme en casa y cocinar, y
ponerme al día con amigos de Washington y
Barcelona, que es mi base en los meses de
verano. También soy un adicto a las películas,
así que intento ver todas las que puedo en
casa o en el cine.
Eres un verdadero mito y una inspiración
para muchos jóvenes DJ. ¿Podrías
nombrar algunos de tus artistas favoritos?
Me inspiran sobre todo la música nueva y
los nuevos artistas, presto mucha atención
a las técnicas de producción y a cómo
evolucionan debido a los sorprendentes
avances de la tecnología. Por supuesto que
hay muchos productores legendarios de
música electrónica, bandas y DJ que han
influido directamente en el rumbo de mi vida,
los he mencionado a lo largo de los años en
las innumerables entrevistas que me han
hecho, pero siempre tengo el oído puesto
en la calle para estar al tanto de las nuevas
generaciones. Los artistas que me inspiran
son demasiados para mencionarlos aquí, pero
te diré que ahora estoy promocionando a
You are a real myth and an inspiration for
many young DJs, could you name some of
your favourite artists?
New music and new artists inspire me the
most; I pay very close attention to production
techniques and how they evolve due to
the amazing advances in technology. Of
course, there have been many legendary
electronic music producers, bands and DJs
who directly influenced the direction of my
life which I have mentioned over the years
in the countless interviews I have done but
I’ve always got my ear to the street for the
new breed. These artists that inspire me are
simply too numerous to mention here, but at
the moment I’m heavily pushing Carlo Lio, The
Junkies, SHADED and Nastia who all tour with
me as much as possible.
Talking about young promises you support,
since 2007 your label SCI+TEC Digital
Audio has been releasing new talents from
the electronic scene. Do you personally
choose them? Could you name some of the
upcoming releases you like the most?
The label is an extension of my musical vision
and identity. It represents not only the sound
and aesthetic that defines who I am as a solo
artist today, but also showcases emerging
talent from around the world. In that regard
I handle 100% of the A&R. We have already
mapped out our release schedule until
January 2014 with some incredible music
from artists such as Carlo Lio and The Junkies
who are from Toronto, Joran van Pol and
Joop Junior from Holland, The Dolphins and
Francesco Bergomi from Italy, Saso Recyd
from Macedonia, Figueroa & Obando from
Medellin and many more.

Hablando de jóvenes promesas que
apoyas: desde el 2007 tu sello SCI+TEC
Digital Audio ha lanzado nuevos talentos
de la escena electrónica. ¿Los eliges tú
personalmente? ¿Podrías nombrar algunos
de los próximos lanzamientos que más te
gustan?
El sello es la extensión de mi visión musical y
de mi identidad. No representa solo el sonido
y la estética que hoy me definen como artista
en solitario, sino que también representa
nuevos talentos de todo el mundo. Es por
eso que me ocupo de ello al 100 %. Ya
tenemos el calendario de lanzamientos hasta
enero de 2014, con algunas publicaciones
increíbles de artistas como Carlo Lio y The
Junkies que son de Toronto, Joran van Pol
y Joop Junior de Holanda, The Dolphins y
Francesco Bergomi de Italia, Saso Recyd de
Macedonia, Figueroa & Obando de Medellín y
muchos más.

The tracks that I play the most tend to be
demos or upcoming release from the label
and they are simply too many to mention here.
Tell us the weirdest thing that has
happened to you during a gig
I just played an outdoor event in Toronto in early
February and the weather was -17C which is
EXTREMELY cold! Fortunately for me Canada
Goose sponsored the event and provided
professional clothing to keep us warm but my
fingers were frozen, making it very difficult to
use the keyboard on my music to search for
music or to control my equipment the way I
normally would. I have played events before
where the weather didn’t exactly cooperate,
but this was intentionally putting me and the
crowd into a “weird” but wonderful situation!
During the summer you have a residency
at Cocoon@Amnesia, one of the best
parties on the island, and last year you
also introduced ENTER@Space, a new and
successful experimental party concept. Will
you repeat the same formula this year?
I’m very fortunate to be in the position that I
am where I can play the best events on the
island, of course including Circoloco at DC10
and Carl Cox at Space. We’re locking in all
these dates now as well as some new ones.

¿Hay alguna fiesta o algún club en el
que no hayas tocado todavía y donde
realmente te gustaría pinchar?
Fuji Rock en Japón está en mi lista de
deseos, también Burning Man, Panoramabar
en Berlín y un nuevo club en Brooklyn
llamado Output, que es del propietario de
Cielo. ¡Pero en realidad no hay muchos
lugares en los que no haya tocado!
Una pista que hayas pinchado mucho
últimamente.
Las pistas que pincho más suelen ser demos
o próximos lanzamientos de mi sello y son
demasiados para mencionarlos aquí.

Is there a club/festival you haven’t played
yet and would really like to play?
Fuji Rock in Japan is on my wish list as is
Burning Man, Panoramabar in Berlin and a
new club in Brooklyn called Output which is
from the owner of Cielo. But really there aren’t
too many places I HAVEN’T played!
t*#*;"t Cuéntanos lo más raro que te ha pasado
en un concierto.
A principios de febrero pinché en un evento
al aire libre en Toronto y la temperatura
era de -17º, es decir, ¡extremadamente
frío! Por suerte para mí, Canada Goose
patrocinó el evento y nos dio ropa profesional
para mantenernos calientes, pero se me
congelaron los dedos, con lo que me
resultaba muy difícil usar el teclado para
buscar música o controlar mi equipo como
hago normalmente. Antes había tocado
en eventos con un clima que no ayudaba,
pero esto me puso a mí y al público en una
situación «extraña», ¡pero maravillosa!
Durante el verano tienes una residencia
en Cocoon @ Amnesia, una de las mejores
fiestas de la isla, y el año pasado también
presentaste ENTER @ Space, un nuevo
concepto experimental de fiesta que tuvo
mucho éxito. ¿Repetirás la misma fórmula
este año?
Me siento muy afortunado por poder tocar en
los mejores eventos en la isla, por supuesto
incluyendo Circoloco en DC10 y Carl Cox en
Space. Actualmente estamos fijando todas
estas fechas, y también otras de nuevas.
