The story of Elisha’s feeding one hundred men with twenty loaves prepares us to hear about the miracle Jesus performs. Jesus is in control of this event, first asking Philip where enough food can be found to feed this great crowd. Notice that Jesus asks this to test him. Philip only sees the large crowd. Andrew sees possibilities in a boy with five barley loaves (barley was the food of the poor) and two fish, while recognizing the problem of so little for so many. But Jesus takes control, having the five thousand sit down, then taking the loaves, giving thanks, and he himself distributing them, then the fish. All are filled. “Gather the fragments left over,” Jesus orders (John 6:12). The people read this event correctly as a sign, but misinterpret its meaning. They want to make him king, but that is not what Jesus is doing here. The next four weeks invite us to understand who Jesus is. What are you looking for from Jesus? The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
