Going through the Door of the Year of Mercy and
A Plenary Indulgence
On Saturday, February 20, 2016, Bishop Rutillo blessed at St. Catherine, the door designated as the
“Holy Door” for the year of mercy.
Connected with the “Holy Door” come the possibilities of securing a Plenary Indulgence.
Pope Francis offers the opportunity to be closer to God on this Year of Mercy. He wants us all to
work for holiness, but this entails opening our heat to others, especially to the most poor and abandoned. As a
special motivation to encourage us, we are given a gift that the Church has, it is called Plenary Indulgence.
We can explain that the Plenary Indulgence is a more complete forgiveness, as it provides purification
that is necessary to come before God. The Catechism says:
“An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt
has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who duly disposed gains under certain
prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption,
dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints”
The way to gain plenary indulgence is both very simple and very difficult at the same time; here you
have the external condition:
1. Go through the door of the Year of Mercy, which will be installed in a Church per Vicariate.
This is a pilgrimage to the temple with the intention of starting a true conversion.
2. Go to Confession with the same intention.
3. Receive Holy Communion with the desire to practice the mercy that Jesus taught us.
4. Recite the Creed, or prayer expressed as the faith of the Church.
5. Pray the Holy Father and his intentions.
6. Pray Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy Prayer.
The Pope also states that you can obtain the Plenary Indulgence when your practice the Works of
Mercy, because this way we become like Christ.
The hardest condition to gain the plenary indulgence is letting go of all attachments to sin. Be free for
God, loving our brothers and sisters. That is why gaining the indulgence is painful; it is sacrifice because it
means breaking with all that separates us from God. The purpose of the Holy Year is that we work every day
so that our desires are God desires, or so that in our lives we are truly capable of doing God’s will, loving our
brother and sisters.
The Pope explains that the sick who cannot make this pilgrimage may obtain the grace of the Holy
Year, living this difficult year with joy, receiving the Eucharist and attending Mass albeit electronically
(Internet, TV, Radio).

Third Sunday of Lent

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Ash Wednesday is not observed by Eastern Christians, perhaps because, at least in Orthodox practice,
weekdays are not proper days for the Divine Liturgy. Typically, “Great Lent” has a bit of a prelude. On
“Meatfare Sunday” the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week
later, “Cheesefare Sunday” has dairy on the menu for the last time until Pascha (Easter). At twilight on
Cheesefare Sunday, officially called “Sunday of Forgiveness.” the church gathers for “Forgiveness Vespers.”
The faithful identify with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God’s forgiveness. The
desire to set aside all bitterness, and to achieve harmony and reconciliation in the family and with one’s
neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season.
How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradition. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil.
Some traditions permit vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict fasting is not permitted
on the Sabbath or the Lord’s Day, so on Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat mitigated, and wine and
oil are allowed. If the Feast of the Annunication falls during Great Lent, then fish may be served.
