Vision Zero kicks off street safety campaign

In 2015, 154 people were
killed in San Antonio and since
then, Vision Zero is on a mission to decrease that number.
Thanks to their new program,
pedestrians, motorists and
cyclists will go through safer
streets.
On Wednesday, the City
unveiled a new Vision Zero
campaign called “It’s Your Life.
It’s My Life,” which aims towards achieving zero fatalities
on public roads. Vision Zero’s
tactic is to take an initiative to
educate pedestrians, cyclists
and motorists on the importance of traveling safely.
At hand to uncover the new
campaign included Mayor Ivy
Taylor, District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, San
Antonio Fire Chief Charles
Hood, SAPD Deputy Chief
Gus Guzman and City Engineer/Director-Transportation

For Mayor Taylor, Vision
Zero is the first step to make
San Antonio a safer city and
give locals and tourists the opportunity to view the seventh
largest city in the country with-
out boundaries.
“It is a worldwide initiative
recognizing that no loss of life
is acceptable in our roadways.
The City of San Antonio agrees
with that, we have been work-
ing diligently to spread the
message throughout our community,” stated Mayor Taylor.
“We believe the keys to being
successful and achieving Vision
Zero is through a combined
approach of five essential elements: education, encouragement, engineering enforcement
and evaluation.”
Each life lost has impacted
thousands of lives.
Local volunteers also attended the ceremony to represent the loved ones who lost
their lives due to traffic related
accidents, whether una hija or
brother. Out of 154 people,
there were 46 pedestrians, three
cyclists, 25 motorists and 80
individuals lost their lives in a
vehicle, stated Vision Zero.
“[Vision Zero] came to my attention because we had several
seniors walking to my church in
my neighborhood (around District 5) and were killed walking
to church,” recalled Gonzales.
“That was one of the reasons
why I knew we had to make a
change for our city overall for
our seniors, adults and our children… San Antonio is one of
the first cities in the country to
adopt a Vision Zero Program.
We have a new campaign, and
I am so proud of the Mayor for
making it a priority.”

Con alegría y plegarias, las
hermanas de la congregación
de Incarnate Word celebraron
el treinta aniversario del esta
blecimiento del Hospital Santa
Rosa de la ciudad de San
Antonio, que en la actualidad
sirve a la comunidad con el
nombre de Christus Santa
Rosa Hospital Medical Center.
El martes 23 de agosto,
fiesta de Santa Rosa de Lima,
la celebración reunió a las
hermanas religiosas, personal
médico y administrativo en la
capilla de Santa Rosa Fellow-
ship Hall donde el Arzobispo
de San Antonio, Mons. Gustavo García-Siller, ofició misa
de acción de gracias por los
treinta años de servicio de esta
institución médica.
Al final del servicio religioso
fue develado un vitral con
la imagen de Santa Rosa de
Lima, creación del artista de
origen búlgaro Plamen Petrov,
a quien le fue comisionado
crear esta obra de arte.
Petrov es un artista de
prestigio internacional por la
calidad y novedad de su trabajo usando el vidrio como
materia prima para desarrollar
su trabajo. Tiene su estudio
y residencia en la ciudad de
Chicago.
Esta pieza artística será colocada de manera permanente
en la entrada principal del
hospital.
Santa Rosa de Lima, la
primera santa nacida en el
hemisferio occidental, nació
en la capital de Perú en 1586
y se distinguía por una extraordinaria belleza y, principalmente, por su humildad, virtudes y servicio humanitario,
prodigando su atención a los
enfermos.
Su padre era español y su
madre de origen inca. Santa
Rosa de Lima falleció a la edad
de 31 años y fue canonizada
en 1671.

When Abram Alonso had
an idea to create a small business in his mother’s kitchen
13 years ago, he did not
know that his graphic design
company would turn into a
one-stop shop for business

His determination grew to
exceed his client’s necessities

logo or business T-shirt. Recently, this determination has
caught the eye a former S.A.
mayor, and together both
men are ready for business.

milestone on Thursday with
a ribbon cutting ceremony to
welcome the newest edition
to the family, former Mayor
Ed Garza. Although the company has been opened for
13 years and Garza recently
joined the team six months
ago, both men wanted to
make the announcement official to the community, in
style.
The company is ready for
many local business owners to know that they are
here to cater their demands
by working one-on-one on
molding their ideas, generating new ones and achieving
a competitive edge in the
marketplace, especially for
the Hispanic community. Although the majority of Chile
Media’s clients (60 percent)
are in San Antonio, they also
work with clients from Texas
and the United States.
“I started doing graphic
design and printing, and
it evolved into what I now
call an advertising services agency,” Alonso told La
Prensa. “With the addition of
Ed’s expertise, we are taking
on more of an advertising
agency front…The company
has evolved from doing ba-
sic print and design jobs to
doing animation, video, different production packages
to strategic marketing and
transformational marketing.”

Do you feel the burn?

Gastroesophageal reflux
disease is found in 10-20
percent of the Western population and consists of three
common symptoms—heartburn, regurgitation (spitting
up) and dysphagia (difficulty
swallowing).
Heartburn is usually a
burning sensation in the
chest that usually occurs
after eating. Regurgitation
is spitting up acidic stuff
along with small amounts
of undigested food. Other
symptoms are chest pain, lots
of salivation, a sensation of
a lump in your throat, pain
with swallowing and occasionally nausea.
What causes gastroesophageal reflux? Well, all the
things we love! Caffeine,
chocolate, fatty and spicy
foods, carbonated beverages
like soda, peppermint and
alcohol. Oh, by the way, being overweight doesn’t help
either.
For many people, these
symptoms happen once in
a while, like once or twice a
week. Your doctor will tell
you to cut out the junk and
lose a few pounds, and she
may prescribe a type of antiacid medication called an
H2-blocker.
If the symptoms go away
after about eight weeks,
then you can try getting
off the medication. If your
symptoms come back, then
you may need to have an
endoscopy to look at your
esophagus and stomach.
If there’s nothing crazy
on endoscopy, like an ulcer,
then you can restart the
medication that worked for
you before. If your symptoms are more frequent, then
your doctor may start with
endoscopy and prescribe a
higher end anti-acid medication called a proton pump
inhibitor.
If this doesn’t help your
symptoms, then we bring
out the big dogs and start
doing other testing, like
measuring the acidity in your
stomach and the pressures
of the esophagus. For some
patients, this may lead to
surgery to resolve the reflux
symptoms.
If the medications don’t
help and the extra testing
doesn’t show you have reflux, then it’s time to look
for another diagnosis.

improvements including school
zone upgrades and pavement
markings.
In 2016, $10 million was
added to the annual $5 million
budget, and the City aims for
the same amount for FY 2017
for the Sidewalk Maintenance
Program. The City, along with
transportation partnering agencies, is accelerating to enhance
the lives and safety in San
Antonio.

Comentarios... Las casas de Sandra Cisneros
Llegué a
la entrevista
con una pregunta. ¿Qué
hace que una
de las escritoras más

de Estados Unidos, una verdadera leyenda de la llamada
literatura chicana, decida dejarlo
todo e irse a vivir a México?
Bueno, eso es exactamente lo
que hizo Sandra Cisneros.
En 2013, a los 57 años de
edad, Cisneros recogió sus cosas, cruzó la frontera de norte a
sur y se fue a vivir a San Miguel
de Allende, Guanajuato. Me
sentí más en mi casa, más feliz
y más conectada a mi comunidad, me contó. Me siento muy
segura ahí. Los vecinos te están
vigilando. En Estados Unidos,
mi temor era morir y que mis
perritos me fueran a comer;
que nadie me iba a encontrar
hasta después de tres días. En
México eso es imposible. Todos
tocan la puerta ¿Gas? ¿Agua?

Las casas y las mudanzas han
marcado la vida y los libros de
Cisneros. Nació en Chicago,
estudió en Iowa y luego se fue
a dar clases a San Antonio. Pero
en Estados Unidos, me dijo,
siempre me siento como una
extranjera. Eso, irónicamente,
le ayudó a convertirse en la
escritora que es.
Encontré mi voz en el momento en que me di cuenta
que era distinta, escribió en su
último libro, “A House of My
Own”.” No quería sonar como
mis compañeros de clase; no
quería imitar a los escritores
que estaba leyendo. Esas voces
estaban bien para ellos pero no
para mí. De ese descubrimiento
nació Esperanza, la protagonista de su famosa novela “La
Casa de Mango Street”.”
Esta es una lección esencial
para cualquier joven escritor:
“Empecé a dedicarme a esos
temas de los que nadie más
podía escribir”.”
Y escribió sobre ella. “Yo soy
la única hija en una familia de
seis hermanos. Eso lo explica
todo”.”Pero luego, como toda
buena escritora, fue profundizando.
Era la única hija en una familia mexicana. O, más bien,
la única hija de un padre mexicano y de una madre mexicanoestadounidense. México estaba
en su destino.
Así que Cisneros se llevó su
escritura a México. Y sus experiencias también.
“He tenido la experiencia de
los espíritus, de lo paranormal,
que yo no sé cómo explicar”,
me dijo, casi en confesión.
“Así que yo no tengo fe; tengo
experiencias de algo después
de la muerte. No me asusta la
muerte porque yo sé que hay
algo más allá”.”
Y luego me habló de su padre.
“El amor existe mucho más allá
de la muerte. Es muy bonito
saber eso. Yo lo sé porque lo
siento. Siento el amor de mi
padre, que sigue amándome
aún más allá. Quizás mi religión
es el amor”.”
Cuando Cisneros era niña,
visitaba frecuentemente la casa
de su abuelo paterno en la colonia Tepeyac de la Ciudad de
México. Fue tantas veces ahí
que hasta llegó a pensar que
ese era su verdadero hogar.
Pero en sus libros y, sobre todo,
conversando con ella me he
quedado con la impresión de
que Cisneros sigue buscando
su casa. Por eso se fue a vivir
a México.
Al final de cuentas, Cisneros
sabe que cambiarse de casa
no va a resolver nada. Su verdadera casa no está en ningún
lugar particular, sino en lo que
escribe. “Encontré mi voz y
mi hogar en la escritura. Y la
escritura me la puedo llevar a
cualquier país”.”
Cisneros, sospechó, tiene
todavía algunas mudanzas y
libros en su vida. Lo único que
quisiera pedirle es que nos invite
a su próxima casa (donde quiera
que esté).
Posdata de otra vivienda:
En una entrevista televisiva, el
presidente de México, Enrique
Peña Nieto, reconoció que su
esposa había recibido un favor
de su amigo Ricardo Pierdant
y que, efectivamente, en una
ocasión (2014) le había pagado
los impuestos prediales de su
apartamento en Key Biscayne,
Florida. Fue un favor de más
de 29 mil dólares. El presidente
dice que ese dinero se reembolsó pero, para eso, tendríamos
que creerle (y hay muchas cosas
en que no le creo a Peña Nieto).
Además, no está claro por
qué Pierdant le pagó los impuestos a Angélica Rivera si,
como Univisión reportó, todo
se podía haber hecho por Internet. ¿Acaso Rivera, Peña Nieto
o alguno de sus asistentes no
pudieron hacer lo mismo desde
México?
Lo que el presidente presentó
como una simple transacción
entre amigos puede ser un acto
ilegal. La Ley Federal de Res
ponsabilidades de Funcionarios
Públicos le prohíbe (Artículo
88) al presidente y a cualquier
otro empleado del gobierno
recibir servicios, beneficios o
favores. Y si los reciben, entonces hay que reportarlos (Artículo
89). El presidente y su esposa no
lo hicieron.
Pero, no confío en la justicia
mexicana para investigar al
presidente. El caso de la llamada Casa Blanca mexicana
demostró la impunidad que
reina en los más altos niveles
gubernamentales. Lo sé: no va
a pasar nada.
Lo más grave de todo es el
terrible ejemplo ético que están
dando el presidente y su esposa.
Su conducta no debería ser
imitada por ningún funcionario
público. Mi única esperanza es
que, cuando haya un nuevo
presidente, se investigue seriamente a Peña Nieto y a su
esposa.

of Hispanic

18th Annual
Scholarship and Awards Gala
at the Grand Hyatt, Aug. 19.
Now that the event is history, I
can report that the gala was a
huge success with over 600 in
attendance.
I informed the readership
in that column that the organization attempts to promote
the next generation of young
aspiring journalists and the opportunity as an organization to
honor its own.
I am personally proud to
have been an active member
for a number of years. I will
continue to be an active member in good standing as long as
I am able.
Composed of local Hispanic,
African-American and Anglo
journalists, as well as public
relations professionals and
students interested in communications or the public relations industry, our chapter is
thriving.
This year we honored entertainer Joe Hernandez (a.k.a.
Little Joe Y La Familia) with
the Corazon de Oro Award. He
has been called many things:
Tejano Legend, the King of
Brown Sound, Grammy Award
winning musician and one of
the most recognizable members
of the Mexican American musical community.
His hit song “Las Nubes” has
served as an anthem for generations of Mexican-Americans.
He has released over 50 albums
in his lifetime. I have covered
him many times over the past
few years when he is in town.
The Corazon de Oro Award
is presented to the individual,
group or institution whose
work has been nationally recognized for excellence. The
recipient is publicly acknowledged as an inspiration to those
around them. Former recipients
include: filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and singer Vikki Carr.
The SAAHJ Community
Service Award was presented
to former Councilwoman Maria
Antonietta Berriozabal, a lifelong community activist and accomplished author. Inspired by
Pope John XXIII and his social
justice principles and President
John F. Kennedy to become
politically involved, Berriozabal
made history becoming the
first Mexican American woman
elected by the San Antonio City
Council, and serving 10 years.
In the late 90s when Henry B.
Gonzalez stepped down as congressman for health reasons,
Maria and I both ran for his seat
which was eventually won by
his son, Charlie Gonzalez. She
made the runoff and I endorsed
her at that time. We have been
good friends since, along with
Charlie Gonzalez. I wrote a
“Just a Thought” column on her
a couple of years ago.
The Henry Guerra Lifetime
Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism was presented to Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez
Ph.D. A professionally trained
journalist, she also honed her
teaching skills to teach the
craft to generations of Latino
journalists.
She is the founder and director of the VOCES Oral History
Project at the University of Texas. Earning a master’s degree
in journalism from Columbia
University Graduate School of
Journalism in 1977, she spent
17 years in the field to include
working at WFAA-TV in Dallas
and the Dallas Morning News
as border bureau chief covering
the U.S.-Mexican border from a
one person bureau in El Paso.
In 1998, she earned her doctorate in mass communication
from the University of North
Carolina. Unlike the two other
recipients I only met her at the
gala.

Trump se notó claramente
esta semana en Akron, Ohio,
en donde criticó a la clase
política no solo demócrata sino
también republicana porque
supuestamente no beneficiaron
en nada a las minorías étnicas.
De acuerdo a su punto de
vista, los latinos y afroamericanos viven en una precariedad
insoportable; sus comunidades
están abarrotadas de pandillas,
pobreza, escuelas de bajos
niveles académicos y otros
males sociales.
Propio de un ignorante que
no entiende que los latinos
son una población diversa
ideológica y económicamente
–muchos pertenecen a las
clases medias, como también
hay de clase alta—, Trump
simplemente hizo resaltar los
estereotipos más mundanos
de los grupos más retrógrados
del país.
Su conclusión fue mucho
más bochinchera e insensible
hacia las causas latinas y afro
americanas: “¿Qué carajos
tienen que perder? Denme una
oportunidad. Yo voy a resolver
todo esto; voy a resolverlo. No
tienen nada que perder”.
Mentira, Trump no quiere
resolver un ápice de los proble
mas de la comunidad latina. La
intención de su nueva retórica
es recuperar el voto moderado
euro-estadounidense, especialmente de aquellos grupos
conservadores que, durante las
últimas semanas, han estado
buscando alternativas reales de
voto en el Partido Demócrata,
el Partido Verde y el Partido
Libertario.
Sus diatribas racistas, sus
peleas constantes con los medios de comunicación y sus
insultos a la familia de un
militar caído en la guerra le han
restado el apoyo de muchos
conservadores leales del Partido Republicano.
No es coincidencia que sus
palabras fueron enunciadas
en medio de una población
de seguidores euro-estadouni
denses.
Si hubiese mostrado algo
de solidaridad y sensibilidad,
Trump hubiese presentado su
“nueva estrategia política” en
medio de una concurrencia
latina en Los Ángeles o en
Santa Ana, California. En Ohio
hay una población nutrida de
afroamericanos, pero no se
siente capaz de presentarse a
un mitin político. ¿A qué le
tiene miedo?
Nunca, desde que inició su
carrera política hacia la Casa
Blanca, se presentó al frente de
una concurrencia minoritaria.
Mientras no lo haga, mientras
no muestre la cara, las palabras
de Trump se esfuman en el aire
y no hace más que confirmar el
desencanto de los latinos hacia
su candidatura. El magnate de
copete rojizo es campeón de la
cobardía.

Desde el momento que inicio su campaña política, Do
nald Trump no consideró al
voto latino y al de los grupos
afroamericanos como fundamentales para llegar a la Casa
Blanca.
Por el contrario, su estrategia
consistió en una política que
solo buscó el apoyo de euro-estadounidenses conservadores,
incluyendo simpatizantes de
los grupos más retrógrados
del país.
El hecho de que recientemente se pronunció a favor de
una política migratoria menos
virulenta contra los latinos y
una política solidaria hacia
los afroamericanos no quiere
decir que el magnate de copete
rojizo haya cambiado de ideo
logía política.
Su intolerancia hacia los latinos se mantiene, su racismo
hacia los grupos afroamericanos es el mismo, su petulancia
y su egocentrismo nunca va
a cambiar. Su mente sigue

CONEY ISLAND AT THE MCNAY — The exhibition
explores and celebrates Coney Island, the most iconic,
uniquely American Amusement Park in the United
States, which has served as national cultural symbol
inspiring artists, musicians, novelists, poets and filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning as a watering
hole for the wealthy, through its transformation into an
entertainment mecca for the masses, to the closing of
Astroland Amusement Park following decades of urban
decline, this first-of-its-kind exhibition uses visual art as

“I try to be a leader all time,
when the group is there and
whenever the whole group can’t
be there. We always try to do it
in a positive way with positive
energy so that everybody does
their best,” said Castillo.
“It’s really good. Everybody
has to show commitment to
the squad. Some of the guys
who weren’t getting chances
earlier in the season are getting
their chances now, so they just
have to go out and perform to
the best of their ability and stay
committed to the team.”
SAFC head coach Darren
Powell’s comment on Matt
Cardone’s performance and
clean sheet: “We watch Matt
every day in training, so training has prepared him for these
moments. Yes, he got a run
of games (earlier this season),
which was for his good fortune,
but against Seattle I thought he
played probably his best game
in a San Antonio FC shirt.”

SAFC midfielder Rafa Castillo
named to USL Team of the Week

San Antonio FC (SAFC) midfielder Rafa Castillo has been
named to the USL Team of the
Week for the second time this
season. Castillo played pivotal
roles in both SAFC wins last
week, including a game-winning
goal against Seattle Sounders
FC 2 on Saturday, Aug. 20, before 6,417 fans at Toyota Field.
Castillo was previously
named to the USL Team of
the Week for his performance
against Tulsa Roughnecks Fc
on April 30, and the Team of
the Week Bench after the July
16 clash with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. Castillo currently
tied for the team lead in goals
this season with four.
Along with Castillo, SAFC
forward Cesar Elizondo and

horizon, St. Mary’s Men’s
Soccer has released its 2016
season schedule.
The Rattlers’ first season
under new head coach Matt
Barnes will begin on Sept.
3, when they visit Oklahoma
Baptist. A six game homestand
will soon follow when the
Rattlers host Colorado Mesa
on Sept.9.
With the addition of four
Lone Star Conference schools
– Eastern New Mexico, West
Texas A&M, Midwestern State
and Texas-Permian Basin, the
landscape of Heartland Conference Men’s Soccer changed.
After playing in eight conference matches last season, the
Rattlers will play in 14 this
upcoming year, beginning
against Dallas Baptist at home
on Sept.15. Two days later,
the Rattlers will play host to
defending Heartland Conference Champion St. Edward’s,
in another installment of the
Battle of the Saints.
St. Mary’s six-game homestand will conclude with a
much-anticipated rematch
with new conference foe, West
Texas A&M. Last season, the
Rattlers shocked the Buffs with
a 2-1 victory in last season’s
opener at Sigma Beta Chi
Field.
Seven of the Rattlers’ final
10 games will be played on
the road, including an Oct. 8
meeting with 2015 Heartland
Conference Champion runnerup Texas A&M International.
The two teams will meet again
on Oct. 29 as the Rattlers will
play host to de Dustdevils in
the regular season finale.
Also the St. Mary’s Women’s soccer has released its
schedule for the 2016 season.

Two days later, the Rattlers
will host the defending Heartland Conference Champion,
Dallas Baptist in a rematch
of the Heartland Conference
Championship Semifinals. On
Oct. 15, the Rattlers will host
Lubbock Christian in the final
home match of the season.
St. Mary’s will finish the season with four-matches on the
road ending at St. Edward’s
on Oct. 29.
Recently, the Heartland
Conference announced its preseason poll for the upcoming
2016 volleyball season with
the new-look St. Mary’s Rattlers expected to finish seventh
in the conference.
After a subpar 2015, the
Rattlers will look to turn
things around under the guidance of first year coach Callaway Mefford.

Restaurant Week’s Sukeban pops flavorful sushi in Southtown

For the past two weeks,
Culinaria has presented a citywide event that celebrates San
Antonio’s local chefs and restaurants all for a good cause—
including one of Southtown’s
fastest growing eateries.
Sukeban Restaurant, located
at 1420 South Alamo St., has
been taking the city by storm
since March of this year by
offering pop art sushi and
champagne, one could hardly
find in San Antonio. Due to
its popularity, co-owner Gerry
Shirley wanted to extend the
invitation by allowing the
restaurant to donate partial
proceeds to benefit Culinaria’s
outreach initiatives.
“It is definitely exciting, and
I have noticed in previous
experiences that a majority of
people only know about the
participating restaurants when
they first step into the restaurant,” Shirley told La Prensa.
“It is a chance to meet new
people and welcome them to
try our food.”
La Prensa recently stopped
by the sushi and champagnethemed restaurant and could
not help but notice the adventure awaiting. As you step
into the restaurant, you will
find anime painted on the
walls and red décor setting an
atmosphere you would find in
the eclectic youth culture in the
country of Japan.
Although hidden on the
outside, the restaurant carries
a welcoming environment with
personality for people ready to
enjoy an early or late dinner
and have a drink. Shirley does
know how to pick his drinks for
those interested in relaxing or
pairing it with a meal.
To start off our Restaurant Week adventure, Shirley
broadened our appetite with
a Seaweed Salad. With ingredients including seaweed,
vinegar and pepper, you easily
taste a sour, juicy version of
seaweed. It was a light appetizer that kept the palette clean
and ready for the main course
that involves a variety of fishes.
The first main course brought
out to us was the Southtown
Roll. When you get a sight of
what it looks like, you will be
surprised to see goat cheese as
the topping.
Once you bite into it, however, you will taste the invigorating flavor of saltiness of the
salmon, white tuna and tuna.
There is also a kick thanks to
the Serrano pepper and avocado engraved into the roll.
It was an interesting roll that
took on the flavor of Southtown itself: salty, spicy and a
little soft hint of cheese.
A dish that will allow your
palate to travel to the exotic country of Japan was the
Sashimi. What was enjoyable
about the dish is that you can

taste the tuna, salmon, white
tuna, snapper and yellowtail
au natural.
It was a fatty and savory
traditional meal with a hint
of ginger and wasabi. The
stripped down element of the
dish allowed you to try the
natural taste and inherent flavor of the salmon as it can only
be prepared when it is a fresh
catch. All of the dishes will pair
well, according to Shirley, with
dry, white champagne.
“I think people should expect
high-grade fish and expertise
that comes in making it. Our
master sushi chef was trained by
the Japanese and has been doing
it for the past 30 plus years…
there is a real art to sushi and
when it is done well, each piece
of fish is delicate and needs to
cut the right way to make it visually appealing and ready to be
eaten,” continued Shirley.
It was ultimately a dining
experience rooted in sophistication for a good cause.
After Aug. 28, a portion of the
proceeds will go towards “The
Farm, technology to table,” a
3-acre farm on San Antonio’s
Northwest Side which has
plans to open open this fall.
The Farm will showcase
groundbreaking technical
growing practices such as
hydroponics, aeroponics and
food computers. In addition,
The Farm will be a place of
beauty with sprawling live
oaks, vertical growing walls,
native wildflowers and nectar
plants.

‘Don’t Breathe’ redefines classical suspense

Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez, known for his reboot
of “From Dusk till Dawn: The
Series” and “Evil Dead,” debuts
his new project, “Don’t Breathe,”
as an ode to Alfred Hitchcock.
In the film that is now in
theatres, Rocky (Starring Jane
Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette)
and Money (Daniel Zovatto)
are three Detroit thieves who
enjoy the thrill of breaking into
the houses of high-class, wealthy
people for fun. However, the fun
takes an enthralling turn when
Money learns that a blind veteran
(Stephen Lang) won a cash settlement following the death of his
only child.
Assuming he is an easy target
to rob, the trio invades the man’s
secluded home in an abandoned
neighborhood. Finding themselves trapped inside, the young
intruders must fight for their
lives after making a shocking
discovery about their supposedly
helpless victim.
La Prensa recently spoke to
the director about the film and
learned that creating a film about
duel villains fighting against one
another was not easy. However,
that motivation is perfect for
bringing the audience to a higher
level of suspense and horror. After spending two years to create
an 88 minute film, Alvarez stated
that perfecting a film was important to catch the audience’s eye.
“When you go back to the
50s and 60s and you go into
[Alfred] Hitchcock movies, you
approach the movie in a classical
way, but you can’t forget about
the suspense,” explained Alvarez

to La Prensa. “I think suspenseful movies have a way to hook
many to the film that other genres
sometimes fail to do. Thriller is
a genre that does not allow you
to go take a break during the film
because you would have missed
a piece of the plot.”
After understanding what
direction to take the film, Alvarez stepped into many roles
including stage production and
costume design to get a clear
vision of what he wanted for the
movie. A director, according to
Alvarez, “needs to wear many
hats to create a successful film.”
In the scenes, Alvarez needed
a cast to create characters that
could improvise, jump and bring
the script to life before “Action!”
is called. He recalls enjoying
working with the actors including
his muse Levy, who also starred
in “Evil Dead.”
Putting the movie together was
all the power Alvarez needed to
give the audience a full movie
that comes with the intensity of
a suspenseful horror flick.
“I think putting intensity makes
it a better story because it goes
a long way. The set, the char-
acters, things you can connect
and understand with, the person
you can relate and what they are
pursuing is what will really hook
you. If you worry about what
could happen and have this fear
and feeling in your chest, then it
makes a great suspense and great
story,” said Alvarez.
After the audience finishes
watching the film, Alvarez also
would like to send a powerful
message to never think poorly
of those who may seem weak or
helpless. You never know who
you can run into.
“I like for my movies to speak
for themselves and hopefully the
message will come across, never
look down and never underestimate a disabled person or blind
person,” concluded Alvarez.

Evanescence announces fall
tour with a stop at the Majestic
Multi-platinum rock band,
Evanescence has announced
a fall tour, kicking off Oct.28.
Evanescence will perform in
San Antonio at the Majestic
Theatre (224 E. Houston St.)
on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m.
Tickets ($39.50-$59.50) will
be available at all Ticketmaster
outlets, including the theatre

Muñoz, mejor conocida como
“Chachita” falleció el martes 23
de agosto a las 5:30 p.m. a los
79 años de edad.
De acuerdo a medios informativos mexicanos la actriz
había tenido problemas respiratorios en junio pasado.
“Chachita” fue una famosa
actriz que hizo carrera en el
cine, televisión, radio, teatro,
centro nocturno y circo por
más de 70 años.
La actriz inició su carrera
en el cine durante la época
llamada Época de Oro del cine
mexicano. La actriz comenzó a
la tierna edad de cuatro años
o antes.
Comenzó su carrera en “El
secreto del sacerdote”. Después
vino “¡Ay, Jalisco, no te rajes!”
(1941) con Gloria Marín y
Jorge Negrete, y recibió el sobrenombre de “Chachita”.
Entre sus filmes infantiles destacan “La pequeña madrecita”
(1944), “La hija del payaso”
(1946), “Chachita de la Triana”
(1947) y “Yo vendo unos ojos
negros” (1948).
Ya adolescente coestelarizó junto con Pedro Infante
la trilogía de “Nosotros los
pobres” (1948), “Ustedes los
ricos” (1948) y “Pepe El Toro”
(1952).
En el ámbito de la televisión
participó en once telenovelas.
Por ejemplo en “Gutierritos”
(1958) con Rafael Banquells.
Más adelante, entre muchas
otras telenovelas, “Mundo de
Juguete” (1974) y “Dos mujeres en mi casa” (1984).
Hizo series radiofónicas
como “Aventuras de una niña”
para Centro y Suramérica a
finales de los años 40.
Como animadora de programas trabajó en “Hitazo”,
“Acción”. También participó
en series como “Corona de
lágrimas” (1964).
Su talento para la comedia
salió a relucir una vez más en
la serie “Nosotros los Gómez”
(1987).
Entre sus participaciones
más recientes figuran “Cuidado
con el ángel” como Candelaria
junto a Maite Perroni y William Levy. También participó

los Muertos weekend, Oct. 29
and 30, at the historic Lone
Star Brewery in the burgeoning Southtown District near
