WOMEN IN EQUINE SURGERY

At the start of her career, Dr. Patty Hogan, who is now one of
the leading equine orthopedic surgeons in the country, was
often confused for a nurse or secretary. Some clients who knew
her as Pat Hogan even assumed that she was a male vet until
they came to pick up their horse because a female orthopedic
surgeon was basically unheard of in the racing industry in the
early 2000s.
AI can remember this funny situation. Dr. Jim Hunt from
Belmont was one of the first veterinarians to start sending me
some cases,@ Hogan recalled while sitting in her office at her
New Jersey-based clinic, Hogan Equine. AHe sent me a condylar
fracture that was one of Todd Pletcher=s, so I called Jim to tell
him how it went. I tell him and he goes, >Okay, thanks for telling
me, but can I talk to Dr. Hogan now?= He thought I was just the
secretary calling. It was just unheard of that women were in
orthopedics and doing racetrack practice, so it took a while for
people to accept that.@
Pletcher, now a seven-time Eclipse winner, is one of Hogan=s
longest-standing clients. She also has done work for Jimmy
Jerkens, Rick Violette, Linda Rice and Mike Hushion, as well as
many top trainers and owners in the harness racing industry.

AThe first 10 years, there were some people that were so
consistent,@ Hogan remarked. ATodd is great. He always sends
me very, very difficult cases. I kid him about it like, >Can=t you
just send me an ankle chip.= But, we have done well together.
Jim Jerkens was one of my first clients. I operated on his first
horse that he won with, named Ninth Inning. People like that I
really appreciate and still work for today. It means a lot to me to
have those relationships.@
Creating and building those relationships did not come easy for
Hogan, however. The lifelong New Jersey resident had her work
cut out for her when she started her journey into veterinary
medicine and broke
down a lot of barriers
to get where she is
today.
AIt took me a while
to figure out not that
I wanted to be a vet,
but that I could do
it,@ the University of

said. AIt was so
competitive and I was so average with my grades. I learned best
by doing. I didn=t get in the first year I applied to vet school and I
was crushed. I decided I=ll go out there and see if I could get a
job.@
Hogan literally did just that, marching into the University of
Pennsylvania Vet School=s New Bolton Center where she took a
job cleaning stalls and the rest, as they say, is history.
AI walked in there and they thought I was somebody else
showing up for a stall cleaning job, so I played along,@ Hogan
recalled. AI said, >I really want to get into vet school, but I=ll clean
stalls!= I stuck with it all summer and even drove the forklift at
night. It just got me in the door and got me to meet people.@
Just three months into that job, Hogan met a person who
would change her life, Dr. Tom Divers. Divers gave the eager
horse lover a job as a technician working on a project for bovine
leukemia virus. That job, and a residency change to
Pennsylvania, got Hogan into Penn the following year.
Upon completing her degree at Penn, Hogan did a surgery
residency at Texas A&M, where she got a big reality check.
AThey were basically forced to take me because I was a woman
and they had gotten a little bit of heat from their superiors
because all their residents were men, so that was one thing
against me,@ Hogan remarked. AAlso, I was from the East Coast
and the first day I walked in there they said, >So, you=re the
Yankee.= It just went from there.@ Cont. p4

Though the residency was tough in many ways, it helped shape
Hogan into the vet she is today and prepare her for the
challenges she would later face on the job.
AI really learned a tremendous amount about surgery and how
to be innovative, but, frankly, it also made me tough to know
how to handle the racetrack environment,@ Hogan explained.
ALet=s face it, when I started there were no women doing
racetrack surgery at all. There are still very, very few. There was
a lot of discrimination in Texas, which was just kind of natural,
but it was an eye opener for me being from the East Coast,
which is so open. But, when I came back to be a racetrack
surgeon I was tougher about it when people said, >I=m not
sending my horse to a woman,= which did happen many times.@
Hogan returned home to the Garden State to begin her career
working for Dr. Scott Palmer at the New Jersey Equine Clinic.
With the help of Hunt, who referred Pletcher her way, Hogan
slowly, but steadily began to build up a reputation and client
base.
However in 2004, about seven years after joining Palmer=s
clinic, a then unknown 2-year-old Thoroughbred, who came in
for an emergency eye removal after a starting gate accident,
would take Hogan=s career to
a new level. That
rambunctious colt, who was
still unraced at the time, was

AHe was trying to get his
gate card and had reared up
and smashed his head in the
gate,@ Hogan recalled of the
horse she jokingly referred to
as Quasimodo during his

recovery. AThey called me up
the next day and said they were bringing me an emergency eye
removal that looked terrible. I go to greet the van and I hear this
clip clop, clip clop. He came trotting in and his head was
massive. It sure looked like he needed his eye removed, but I did
my own
X-rays and ultra sound, which showed that deep inside the
eyeball was still intact and had not ruptured. The swelling was
all the tissue around his eye and he had several sinus fractures.@
Not only did Hogan not remove the eye, she did not perform
surgery at all. The Cream Ridge resident treated the chestnut
with steroid injections, kept his face wrapped and checked on
him diligently. He made a full recovery and his eyesight was
completely unaffected. Cont. p5
AI can remember every hair on that horse=s body because he
was so memorable. He had the greatest tough guy personality,@
Hogan recounted with a fond smile. AA few weeks after he left,
[trainer] John Servis contacted me and said, >You know that
horse that you fixed the eye on? He=s pretty good.= He started to
win and win, and I
remember John
called me one day
and said, >I just
wanted to tell you I
am about to change
your life.= Sure
enough, he did. We
had so many people

interviews, ESPN, The New York Times, everybody came.@
Hogan=s client list began to grow and grow and in 2007, after
spending a year helping to plan, build and launch the Ruffian
Clinic in New York, she started her own clinic at New Jersey=s
Fair Winds Farm, a Standardbred breeding operation across the
street from her house. Hogan=s practice is about 50%
Thoroughbreds and 50% Standardbreds, which gives her the
opportunity to see just about every type of orthopedic injury.
AFair Winds is a client I had for all of my career and they just
had space not being used, so it was great,@ said Hogan, who
grew up working in the harness racing industry and is married to
Standardbred trainer Eddie Lohmeyer. AThis was their old stud
barn. We converted it and we have about 55 stalls and the
paddocks. It=s good for them too because they have horses
filling their stalls that they normally wouldn=t have.@
With 17 racetracks, both Standardbred and Thoroughbred,
within a two-hour drive of the clinic, Hogan=s clients come from
all over the
Midlantic area and
all walks of
racetrack life, from
claimers to
champions. In
addition to
champion Smarty
Jones, she has
worked on Eclipse
winner La Verdad (Yes It=s True); GISW Take Charge Indy (A.P.
Indy); MGISWs Palace (City Zip) and Sweet Reason (Street
Sense); Hambletonian winner Trixton; and top Standardbred
Always B Miki, who recently shattered the world record for
fastest mile ever by a pacer. Cont. p6
AThere is nothing more gratifying than having a horse come in
the door that is stressed and in a lot of pain, fixing whatever the
problem is and watching them walk out happy and using the
leg,@ Hogan remarked. AThat=s the best part about surgery. It=s
almost instant.@
Hogan=s care doesn=t just stop
when the horse leaves her clinic.
She continues to follow each of her
patients throughout their careers.
AI keep track of all of them. I put
the names in the DRF database so I
get an alert if they are working, and
if they are not working well I call
and ask if there is a problem,@
Hogan explained. AI called last week
on a $5,000 claimer that had a
really hard slab fracture. The horse

That=s one thing I love about my job. I=m not just here to do the
surgery part. I like the whole package, the relationships with the
clients and to see how the horse is doing.@
Hogan is also deeply involved with aftercare, offering free
surgeries to several Thoroughbred and Standardbred
organizations dedicated to giving horses a life after racing.
ASurgery averages around $3,000, which is a big chunk of
money for a group raising $5 here and $10 there, so I made a
decision that I was going to do the surgeries for free,@ Hogan
commented. AIt was nothing to do with the organizations
themselves, it was just kind of a pact I had with the horse
because my whole life I had this wonderful career based on
horses and it was a way to give them a chance.@

O=Rourke added that no decision has been made either on
whether or not Arrogate will run in the G1 Dubai World Cup
Mar. 25.
Getting a California Chrome-Arrogate rematch would be a
home run for the Stronach Group and Gulfstream, but it would
put those looking to sell or lease their starting spots in a
precarious position. If the Abig two@ run, the third choice in the
race could be in the 10-1 or 12-1 neighborhood. The starting
spots originally sold for $1 million, exactly what the third-place
finisher receives, making third the Abreak even@ point. To pay
$1 million to run against California Chrome and Arrogate with
any horse is something many owners may not want to do.

AProtonico was a serious racehorse who showed Grade I talent
at every stage of his career,@ said Pletcher. AHe beat some
top-level horses in several graded races at major tracks like
Churchill, Keeneland and Aqueduct. I believe Protonico was very
unlucky not to win a Grade I, but he was one of the most
versatile and better-looking horses we had in the barn.@
Protonico is the first foal out of Alpha Spirit, who is a daughter
of Chilean Horse of the Year Wild Spirit (Chi) (Hussonet). She is
responsible for the unraced juvenile filly California Spirit (Tale of
the Cat), a yearling colt named Regal Look (Tiznow) and a
weanling colt by Quality Road.

Mon) nearly overcame a troubled beginning to finish second,
beaten a nose, on debut in a state-bred $40,000 tagger going six
furlongs at Belmont Sept. 29 and recently ran fourth in an
off-the-turf special weight event over that same trip and track
Oct. 23. The second and third-place finishers from that race
returned to graduate from the maiden ranks in their next starts,
and Carradine was given a 5-2 chance to do the same here.
Away to a sharp start, the bay set a pressured pace along the
inside through a half-mile in :47.72 and avoided serious trouble
when pace-pressing Horoscope (Astrology) stumbled and
unseated jockey Manny Franco approaching the far turn.
Cornering for home with a clear advantage, he was geared down
late and crossed the wire 4 1/4 lengths in front of Can You Diggit
(Tiznow). The winner=s dam is also responsible for a weanling
colt by Big Brown. She visited Shanghai Bobby earlier this year.

Transferred to this new barn following that effort, the dark bay
posted a steady series of works at Bridlewood Farm over the last

Guild Senate, including six new members: Jose Ortiz, Joe Rocco,

Among other responsibilities, the Senate determines the levels
of dues and assessments and selects the Board members,

MILITARY ATTACK OUT OF HONG KONG CUP

Military Attack (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), the 2013 Horse of the
Year in Hong Kong, was scratched Wednesday from the Dec. 11
G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup after failing to sufficiently recover
from a leg injury sustained when a first-up third in the
G2 Longines Jockey Club Cup at Sha Tin Nov. 20.
A Group 1 winner in Hong Kong and Singapore and runner-up
to Designs On Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in a
thrilling renewal of the Hong Kong Cup in 2014, Military Attack
went to the sidelines last May with a left front suspensory issue,
the South China Morning Post reported. The veteran of 44
career trips to the post ran on well to be third in the Jockey Club
Cup, but was reported to be lame in his left front after the race.
The 8-year-old was given an entry for the International Races,
but ultimately could not recover in time.

(Danehill) from Juddmonte's great Hasili (Ire) family was the
standout of the third session of the December Mares' Sale at
Tattersalls on Wednesday, selling for 775,000gns to Amanda
Skiffington.
Replete (GB) (Makfi {GB}) (lot 2133) may be unraced but,
hailing from a dynasty interwoven with bold black-type, she has
plenty to recommend her, not least her high-flying mother,
whose siblings include Intercontinental (GB), Cacique (Ire),
Champs Elysees (GB), Dansili (GB) and half-sister Heat Haze
(GB). Meanwhile Replete's half-sister Romantica (GB) (Galileo
{Ire}) is a Group 1 winner and her half-brother, the Group
2-placed listed winner Ideal World (Kingmambo), an emerging
sire in South Africa.
"She was the nicest horse of the day with a fantastic pedigree
and she's a real beauty," said Skiffington, who was standing with
Timmy Hyde and David Wachman as she saw off attempts to
secure the 3-year-old filly from Greg Goodman of Mt Brilliant
Farm in Kentucky and John Freyer and Paul Messara of
Australia's Arrowfield Stud. She added, "She'd suit Galileo really
well."

The transaction, which saw Replete top the session, was not
only the highest price paid for a Juddmonte-bred at the
December Sale, but also nudged Tattersalls' annual turnover
into record territory, passing the high mark of 263.4-million gns
set in 2014.
The day-three aggregate was up on last year by 8% at
7,159,200gns from 184 horses sold of the 238 offered. This
meant a four-point drop in clearance to 77% and an 11% decline
in the median to 18,000gns, but the average improved to
38,909gns, a rise of 16%.

As usual on the Wednesday of the mares' sale, the Juddmonte
draft provided an after-dark highlight. Al Kazeem (GB) (Dubawi
{Ire}) has experienced a chequered start to his stud career but
those yearlings that made it to market were certainly well
received and he will be joined at John Deer's Oakgrove Stud by a
glamorous young Juddmonte partner in lot 2125, the unraced
Marlingford (GB) (Oasis Dream), bought for 155,000gns. The
3-year-old is a half-sister to G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner
Zambezi Sun (GB) (Dansili {GB}) from a family of stakes
performers or producers associated with her grand-dam Interval
(GB) (Habitat).
"It's a great family, as they all are at Juddmonte, with a good
bit of speed at the bottom," said Oakgrove's Tim Lane. "But

(GB) (Observatory), whose Group 1-winning full-sister African
Rose (GB) has already produced a notable runner in Fair Eva

"Sandstone is the first foal of a wonderful mare and there are
lots of possible updates and improvements to come in the

An eye-catching 3 3/4-length victory for debutante Enable (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}) on Monday persuaded the Newsells Park Stud

from Juddmonte.
"It was the update, really," said Julian Dollar of his 3-year-old
purchase (lot 2110). "The trainer thinks she's pretty useful and

Concentric (GB) (Sadler's Wells), the listed-winning dam of
Birdwood and Enable, is a full-sister to Dance Routine (GB), the
dam of Juddmonte's globetrotting star Flintshire (GB), who will
stand at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Kentucky in 2017.
When the hammer came down on the final Juddmonte filly
through the ring, 49 of the draft had been sold for a total of

A torpid post-luncheon session, pending the Juddmonte draft,
was suddenly illuminated by lot 2085 the 3-year-old Light Up
Our World (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire})--a listed winner, with multiple
group placings, for Richard Hannon. BBA Ireland seemed to have
won the day until a single bid of 420,000gns from Luke
Lillingston proved sufficient to end their interest, a price
cognisant of the fact that her dam Shine Like A Star (GB)
(Fantastic Light) is a half-sister to G1 Coronation S. winner Fallen
For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}).
The filly was consigned by Overbury Stud, where Shine Like A
Star is boarded by her owner Derek Boocock. "He sold the
half-sister Light Up My Life (Ire) (Zamindar) here three years ago
for 425,000gns," recalled Overbury's Simon Sweeting. "So the
mare's obviously
been very lucky for
him. But then the
whole family has
done nothing but
improve since he
bought her."

Lillingston was acting on behalf of John Moore's and Charles
Noell's Merriebelle Ireland. "Plans are open," he said. "She
might go to America to continue racing over there: she seems to
go on all ground and gets a mile and an eighth. But she's bought
as a broodmare prospect, sooner or later. She vetted well, she's
good-looking, and it's great to back into the family. I was
underbidder on the second dam many years ago, to Philippa
Cooper, and have been cursing my luck ever since. And of
course I like Zoffany too, I believe we bought his first stakes
winner."
Light Up Our World's second dam, Fallen Star (GB) (Brief
Truce), has been good to Philippa Cooper's Normandie Stud. Her
daughter Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) won the
G1 Coronation S. and provided the co-top lot at Book 1 of this
year's October Sale with her Dubawi (Ire) colt, who sold for
2.6-million gns.

Flying Fairies Races On For Oxx...
A cluster of fillies-in-training towards the end of the session
included an attractive prospect in lot 2149, Flying Fairies (Ire)
(Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who will be joining John Oxx after
he signed a 280,000gns docket. Winner of a 10-furlong listed
race at Leopardstown on her final start for Joseph Murphy, the
3-year-old is out of a half-sister to two Derby trial winners in
Twist And Turn (GB) (Groom Dancer) and Meath (Ire) (Sadler's
Wells)--who respectively won the Chester Vase and Gallinule
S.--but Oxx hopes that she can enhance the page herself before
going to the paddocks.
"She's been improved steadily and her last run was her best,
when stretched out in distance on the last day of our turf
season," he said. "She's for an Irish client and while she'll go to
stud eventually she should give them a bit of fun on the track for
another year first. She's had a long season so we'll give her a
break and look for something in the spring."
Lot 2102, Fine Blend (Ire) (Sakhee's Secret {GB}), was picked
up by trainer William Muir for just i10,000 as a 2-year-old at
the Goffs February Sale and 20 months later she was knocked
down at 180,000gns to David Redvers. Her hike in price came
about thanks primarily to her listed success in the Criterium de
Vitesse at Chantilly last October, and earlier this year she was
second to another flying filly, the subsequent Group 1 winner
Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), in the Listed Land O'Burns

Wigan Unearths A Treasure...
It's hard to argue with the 145,000gns paid by James Wigan for
lot 1963--not least when you consider the further
embellishment of her page since Tesoro (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was
bought at the Craven Breeze-up here last year for 200,000gns. A
maiden winner for Dean Ivory in the meantime, her pedigree
looks better than ever following the emergence this season of
Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the outstanding winner of
the G1 Fillies' Mile, who is out of triple Group 1 winner Halfway
To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB})--herself a half-sister to this filly's
dam, the Group 3 winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}).
Theann has already produced a dual Group 1-winning sister to
Tesoro in Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and is a daughter of the
top-class sprinter Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {GB}).
"Obviously it's just a beautiful pedigree, the outstanding one in
the book," Wigan reasoned. "And if she's on the small side, she's
certainly an acceptable model."
Ivory's Harper Lodge Stables had also registered a six-figure
sale with the preceding lot 1962, the listed-placed Rosie's
Premiere (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}), who sold for 100,000gns. She
is on her way to Haras du Mezeray, whose manager Philippe
Brosset explained, "It is such a tough, running family, the filly
herself ran 25 times. She was fast as well, reaching a rating of 93
and picking up black-type. We want to get some earlier types in
our broodmare band to go with what the market wants."
Sure enough, she could visit Dark Angel--as has her mother, of
late, in consecutive seasons. "It's a young family with plenty
going on," Brosset added. "Her 2-year-old half-brother Golden
Goal (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was bought by John Ferguson."
Mason's Need For Speed...
Speed was the key enticement for Charlie Mason when it came
to paying 135,000gns for Lulla (GB) (lot 1996). As a daughter of
G1 July Cup winner Oasis Dream (GB) and G2 King's Stand S.
heroine Dominica (GB) (Alhaarth {Ire}), Lulla's page certainly has
a strong sprinting feel to it, and she was offered by Lordship
Stud in foal to another July Cup winner, Lethal Force (Ire).
"This is a real speed family," said Mason, "And you have to pay
a bit more for mares like this. We'll offer her foal through Silfield
Bloodstock next year."
Lulla's first foal is the Group 2-placed juvenile Mr Scaramanga
(GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) and she has yearling and foal daughters by
the Lordship Stud homebred Swiss Spirit (GB) on the ground.
Camelot (GB) made such an impressive debut at the yearling
sales that a listed winner bearing one of his foals was bound to
command attention. Sure enough, lot 2076, Accipiter (GB)
(Showcasing {GB}), fetched 100,000gns from David Cunningham
of Tullpark in Co Tipperary--a very respectable return on the
9,000gns she cost here as a yearling when bought by Nicky
Murray, who reoffered her on Wednesday through her Whitwell
Bloodstock operation.

HRI LAUNCHES GRANT PROGRAMME
Professional jockeys in Ireland will be able to have some costs
of Quality and Qualifications Ireland courses reimbursed
through Horse Racing Ireland=s new Education and Training
Grant programme organised through its Careers and Racing
Education department. The programme is part of CARE=s
commitment to help jockeys to develop their skills and
qualifications for their current role, or to help them prepare for
life and work outside race riding. The grant programme will
operate on a reimbursement basis and will be paid in two 50%
installments--at the beginning of the course and upon successful
completion. Applicants must have held a professional jockeys
licence, issued by the Irish Turf Club, over three of the past five
years.
Patrick Ryan of CARE said, AI hope the grant programme will
act as an incentive for jockeys to consider upskilling, or getting
back into education and that any jockey who is out injured will
look at using their time on the sidelines to do a course in an area
that is of interest to them. We will also be willing to offer
expertise and experience from within HRI for any jockey who
needs assistance or advice with an assignment, study plan, or
