School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal Pruning time Tiempo de Poda Today’s readings and prayers focus on our need to see this Lenten season as a time of pruning. In the Gospel, Luke relates the story of the fig tree that did not bear fruit. The orchard owner tells the gardener that “For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down.” The gardener asks the owner to “leave the fig tree for this year, I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it. It may bear fruit in the future.” The time is granted. This time can be compared to our Lenten season when we ask Jesus to prune our dead branches. It is a time to grow closer to God by remembering as the Responsorial Psalm extols that “The Lord pardons all [our] iniquities, heals all [our] ills. He redeems [our] life from destruction, [and] crowns [us] with kindness and compassion.” Yet, in our every day living, it is easy to forget that God is tending the garden, caring for us and providing all that we need. The reading from Exodus provides an illustration of God’s attempt to “prune” the Israelites. God appears to Moses and promises to nurture the Israelites by leading them out of Egypt to “a land flowing with milk and honey.” But, the Israelites lose their trust in God and begin to grumble. In his letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul alludes to this loss of trust. He reminds us that the Israelites serve as an example and admonishes, “Whoever thinks he is standing secure take care not to fall.” Lent is our time to check to be sure we are standing on firm ground. It is a time to open our hearts and receive the fertile graces and opportunities that Jesus is offering. Last Sunday, the parting words of the Father’s voice reminded us to “Listen to Him” as Jesus descended the mountain with His disciples so that they could continue the work of building up the Kingdom. In keeping with the long-standing tradition of the Church, a parish mission is called upon to gather the community together to inspire and encourage one another. These missions look to increase our faith, affirm our sacramental relationship, inspire a deeper relationship with Christ, and excite all people to share the Good News of Jesus with family, neighbors, and co-workers. This Lent we will be focusing on three of the great Sacraments of the Church. Our foundational sacrament of our relationship in Christ is Baptism. Bishop Robert Barron will engage us in “Renewing our Discipleship in Jesus”. As we approach the Easter Sacraments, it is that relationship which we cherish and live most intimately in our families and in our community. In the season of Lent, we focus by our fasting, prayer and almsgiving, through our desire for repentance and our yearning for God’s merciful love. Our second night, Fr. Leon Hutton will offer for reflection, “Seeing the Father’s Mercy with New Eyes.” During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are coming to a greater appreciation of the healing touch of the Lord as we see the power of mercy uniting individuals, families, and communities affected by our human frailty. And finally, the third night will focus on our on-going gift of Christ’s presence to us in the Eucharist. Deacon Don Huntley will engage us with “Communion; A Gift We Don’t Just Receive”. As the central sacrament of Christ’s enduring presence and promise to us, we are His Eucharistic people in all we say and do because we are the Lord’s. In our parish mission, we seek to meet Jesus through our Discipleship, through His Mercy, and together through our Communion with Jesus and his Church. May our patron, Mary of the Assumption lead us to her son. May these three days with the Lord help us rediscover, rejuvenate, and enkindle in us the fire of His Love.
