What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence is abuse that occurs between spouses,
ex-spouses, boyfriend/girlfriend, and parents of a child in
common. In California, these relationships also cover samesex relationships.
What can I do if I see and incident or if I can hear my
neighbors are involved in a domestic violence incident?
Call the police. You can remain anonymous or ask to be
contacted by phone only. Your intervention may save a life.
I am in this country illegally. If I call the police for help,
will I be deported?
The priority of the Oxnard Police Department is to protect
lives, stop violence, and investigate crimes. You will receive
help regardless of you residency status.
My spouse was arrested and I did not ask for him/her to
be arrested. Why did the officers do that?
In California, it is mandated that the officers investigate all
reports of Domestic Violence. An arrest will only be made if
there is probable cause to make an arrest.
Now that my spouse has been arrested, how do I drop
the charges?
Once an arrest has been made for Domestic Violence,
charges CAN NOT be dropped at the Oxnard Police
Department. You must contact the Office of the District
Attorney in Ventura.
How can I help Domestic Violence Victims and their
children?
The shelters and services are free and operate largely from
donations. Consider donating food, clothing, furniture, or
money to a local shelter or contact Interface Children &
Family Services for more information at 1-800-636-6738.
