MEDITATIONS ON MERCY
Misericordiae Vultus. (MV). By beginning with a scripture
passage and a reference to paragraphs in Misericordiae vultus,
this reflection offers a way to more deeply embrace the call to
embody mercy that is asked of every Christian.

Lk 1:46-55; MV, no. 24
"And Mary said:
'My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is from age to age
to those who fear him." (Lk 1:46-50)
This passage is the beginning of Mary's response to her cousin
Elizabeth. Mary responds to Elizabeth with this declaration of
God's great love and mercy, which has not only been shown to her
in the Annunciation but has also been continuously shown
throughout history. Because of Mary's humility and attitude of
openness to the will of God, God blesses her abundantly, making
her a model of loving obedience for all generations. Likewise,
when we are open to God's will, God blesses us and the work that
we do for his glory.

MEDITATIONS ON MERCY
(cont’d)
In this Jubilee of Mercy, we are encouraged to be
open to God's call and allow his will to work through
our lives. By being open and receptive to God's will,
our ability to act with loving mercy toward others is
nourished by God's love for us. This openness is
sometimes hard for us to maintain, because we are
afraid of the unknown. Mary
shows us, however, that we can place all our trust in
God because he loves, blesses, and cares for us.
Throughout history and in generations to come, we
see God's loving kindness and mercy revealed in his
ability to enact a reversal of fortunes—for example,
in this passage from Luke, the lowly are lifted up and
the hungry are filled (Lk 1:52-53). By seeing God's
acts of compassion outlined in this song of praise and
in our own lives, we are able to take courage in our
mission of mercy toward others.
Discussion Questions
In Misericordiae Vultus, Pope Francis suggests that
we pray the Salve Regina (The Hail Holy Queen) as
we put into practice living a life filled with mercy.
The opening lines of this prayer call attention to
Mary's role in Christ's mission: "Hail holy queen,
mother of mercy . . . " Not only does Mary act with
love toward others, she also directs them to her son,
Jesus, who "is the face of the Father's mercy" (MV,
no.
1. 1). Spend some time in reflection with this prayer.
How do you see your relationship with Christ in light of
his identity as the face of God's mercy?
In what ways or through whom does Christ invite you
to a deeper experience of God's mercy?
2. With Mary's openness to God's will as a model,
how can you be more open to God's will working in
your life this month?
What are some simple acts you can do to reveal God's
compassion to others so that they also might have the
courage to follow God with an open heart?

ofrece una forma mas profunda al llamado a encarnar

largo de la historia. Gracias a la humildad y la actitud de apertura
de María a la voluntad de Dios, Dios la bendice en abundancia,
haciendo de ella un modelo de obediencia amorosa para todas las
generaciones. Del mismo modo, cuando estamos abiertos a la voluntad
de Dios, Dios nos bendice a nosotros y al trabajo que hacemos para su
gloria.
En este Jubileo de la Misericordia, se nos anima a estar abiertos al
llamado de Dios y permitir que su voluntad obre a través de nuestras
vidas. Al ser abiertos y receptivos a la voluntad de Dios, nuestra
capacidad de actuar con misericordia amorosa hacia los demás es
alimentada por el amor de Dios por nosotros. A veces nos es difícil
mantener esta apertura, porque tenemos miedo a lo desconocido.
María nos muestra, sin embargo, que podemos depositar toda nuestra
confianza en Dios porque él nos ama, nos bendice y se preocupa por
nosotros. A lo largo de la historia y en las generaciones venideras,
vemos la bondad y misericordia amorosa de Dios revelada en su
capacidad para disponer un vuelco de la fortuna; por ejemplo, en
este pasaje de Lucas se exalta a los humildes y se colma a los

The word mercy, Pope
Francis declared in his
announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy,
“reveals the very mystery
of the Most Holy Trinity” (Misericordiae Vultus,
2). For mercy is how God
comes to meet us; mercy is
the fundamental law
helping us recognize everyone as brothers and
sisters; mercy is the
bridge connecting God
and humanity, opening
our hearts to the hope of
being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God’s
self-revelation as a lifegiving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us
closer to God in friendship and communion. Both
Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God’s
most important attributes.
Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in
mercy. Islam addresses
the Creator as “Merciful
and Kind,” believing divine mercy limitless, its
doors always open. May
this Jubilee Year of Mercy,
Pope Francis prays, open
us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual
understanding, eliminate
all closed-minded
disrespect, and drive out
every form of violence
and discrimination.

Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad
En la Bula papal Misericordiae Vultus, 2, el Papa Francisco dice que la misericordia “es la palabra que revela el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad”. Pues la misericordia es cómo Dios viene a
nuestro encuentro; misericordia es la ley fundamental que nos ayuda a reconocernos como hermanos y
hermanas; misericordia es el puente que conecta a
Dios con la humanidad, abriendo nuestros corazones a la esperanza de ser amados por siempre pese a nuestras ofensas. La revelación de Dios hacia
nosotros es un don de vida, un amor compartido de
la Trinidad de personas que nos acercan más a
Dios en amistad y comunión. Tanto el judaísmo como el islamismo consideran a la misericordia uno de
los atributos más importantes de Dios. Israel incasablemente proclama la misericordia inmensa. El islamismo se refiere hacia Dios como “Misericordioso y
Clemente” (Corán 59:22) creyendo en su divina e
inmensa misericordia cuyas puertas siempre están
abiertas. Que este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia,
ruega el Papa Francisco, se nos abra a un dialogo
más ferviente, profundizando nuestro entendimiento
mutuo, eliminando toda falta de respeto de tener
una mente cerrada y, eliminando toda falta de violencia y discriminación.

LA VIDA EN LA TRINIDAD
El nombre de la Trinidad es, sin duda, el nombre más sagrado
para nosotros: Lo mencionamos cada vez que hacemos la
Señal de la Cruz, y constituye el corazón de nuestro Credo. Sin
embargo, el Domingo de la Trinidad es un buen día, para
detenernos y reflexionar sobre el papel que cada una de las
tres personas que mencionamos tanto en la Trinidad y en
nuestras vidas. Cuando celebramos la Eucaristía los domingos,
nos reunimos como el Cuerpo de Cristo mediante nuestro

The City of Burlingame and the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul of
San Mateo County (SVdP) will hold its first
Book Donation Drive this
Memorial Day Weekend (May 28-29th) on
California Drive, north of the Burlingame Train
Station. SVdP volunteers will collect your used
books from 8am - 4pm. Look for the SVdP
truck! Books that make the most difference
are: Text Books, Business Books, Self-help/
Motivational Book, Children's Books and Biographies. Our goal is to get 1 million books donated during 2016.
Any and all books are welcome!
