Downtown Denver Partnership
are successful in halting the violence along the 16th Street Mall
with a $1.65 million investment
in increased police and security
patrols, many wonder where the
homeless and ‘wanderer’ populations will land. In addition, the
use of ‘area restrictions’ that forbid arrestees from being on the
mall have been put into place.

Juan Gabriel, an idol for the ages
Juan Gabriel has been an icon
for the Mexican music community
for 45 years. He has had an amazing musical career and is one of
the most embellished artists in this
genre’s area of music. He had sold a
record 15 million copies and wrote
about 1,800 songs. On August 28,
2016 Juan Gabriel passed away in
his home in Santa Monica, while
Clerissa Salazar
on a tour.
Juan Gabriel had an amazing
career as a singer, and he entertained millions of people, but
he did not always have an easy path. He was the youngest of
10 children and when he was a child his family was forced to
move because his father was placed in a psychiatric hospital.
He chose his stage name, in part, for his father and the lack
of a father in his life.
Juan Gabriel was placed in a boarding school and
became very close with one of his teachers. Juan Gabriel
left the boarding school with his teacher when he was 13
and from there he composed his first song. He spent a year
with his teacher before he moved back with his mother. He
became interested in a church where he met two nuns who
introduced him to the choir.
He debuted on Noches Rancheras where he sang
Maria la Bandida. From there his musical career went silent
and Juan Gabriel went to work at the Noa-Noa bar, where he
was inspired to write El Noa Noa. During this time he went
to Mexico City to work with record companies, but he was
rejected repeatedly so he returned to Juarez and continued
working. The next year he was signed by RCA . He was originally hired to be a back up vocalist and worked for Roberto
Jordan. He left in 1970 because of non payment issues and
he returned to work in Juarez.
Juan Gabriel returned to Mexico City the next year. He
slept in buses and train stations, and at one point he was
wrongly accused of robbery. He was convicted and imprisoned for a year and a half. While he was there he continued
to write songs and he met Andres Puentes Vargas, the
prison warden. Vargas introduced Juan Gabriel to Mexican

volver con su madre, y allí se interesó en la iglesia y conoció
a dos monjas que lo llevaron al coro.
Él se presentó por primera vez en Noches Rancheras en
donde cantó “María La Bandida”. Allí su carrera musical se
silenció y Juan entró a trabajar en el bar Noa-Noa, en donde
se inspire a escribir “El Noa”. En este tiempo él se fue a la
Ciudad de México para trabajar con compañías disqueras y
fue rechazado repetidamente y entonces volvió a Juárez y
continuó trabajando. El siguiente año el decidió probar de
nuevo y firmó un contrato con la RCA. Él fue contratado originalmente como segunda voz y trabajó para Roberto Jordán.
El renunció en 1970 porque no estaba recibiendo pagos y de
nuevo volvio a trabajar en los bares de Juárez.
Juan Gabriel decidió probar una vez mas y se encaminó

La Prieta Linda helped Juan Gabriel re-sign with RCA
with a new recording contract. In 1971 he released his
first studio album and had his first hit. Over the next 15
years Juan Gabriel’s fame continued to grow and his shows
seold out. He became Mexico’s leading commercial singersongwriter and he recorded multiple different styles. Juan
Gabriel was also viewed as an icon for the LGBT community
in Mexico. He became a secure outlet for the people of the
community who struggled. He never openly admitted his
sexuality, but with his flowing gowns and sequins the LGBT
community hailed him as one of their own.
Juan Gabriel led an incredible life with many accomplishments. Although he was not married he fathered four
children with Laura Salas and always referred to her as his
best friend for life. Juan Gabriel was listed on Billboard as
one of the 30 most influential Latin Artists of All Time. After
his death Juan Gabriel became a trending name on Twitter
and fans held candlelight vigils for him in both the U.S. and
Mexico.
His music is a lasting affirmation to his name. He has
influenced thousands and will continue to influence those
who struggle, dream, then succeed.

beverages would be administered if the voters had approved
the measure proposed in the petition.” The individual representing the opposition to the petition is being funded and
directed by the big soda trade industry. Opponents’ highpowered, lawyers are resorting to a playbook used in other
communities across the country looking to tax sugary drinks
to create funding to encourage healthy lifestyle choices, particularly for minority residents.
Protect Colorado statement’s
on Anti-Energy ballot
In response to the Colorado Secretary of State’s
announcement that the anti-fracking ballot measures did
not meet the signature requirement to qualify for the
November ballot, Protect Colorado issued the following
statement:“Colorado voters recognized that these extreme
measures would destroy the state’s economy and take
away private property rights. The voters read the petitions
and declined to sign them because they understood the

devastating consequences these initiatives would have
on all Coloradans,” said Karen Crummy, communications
director for Protecting Colorado’s Economy, Environment,
and Energy Independence. In 2014, the Colorado oil and
natural industry had a $31.7 billion economic impact in the
state and contributed $1.2 billion in public revenue, $178
million to schools and $330 million in severance taxes, half
of which goes to the Department of Natural Resources for
wildlife conservation, water projects and low income energy
assistance, according to the University of Colorado Boulder
Leeds School of Business.

that not enough signatures were validated by the Secretary
of State’s office to place Initiatives 75 & 78 on the November
ballot. At this time, Yes for Health and Safety Over Fracking
is reviewing the ruling and the disallowed signatures to
determine whether to file a challenge. By the Secretary of
State’s numbers, Yes for Health and Safety Over Fracking
achieved one of the highest validation rates of any submitted ballot this year.
Retirement plans can make loans
The Internal Revenue Service announced that 401(k)s
and similar employer-sponsored retirement plans can make
loans and hardship distributions to Louisiana flood victims
and members of their families. Participants in 401(k) plans,
employees of public schools and tax-exempt organizations
with 403(b) tax-sheltered annuities, as well as state and
local government employees with 457(b) deferred-compensation plans may be eligible to take advantage of these
streamlined loan procedures and liberalized hardship distribution rules. Though IRA participants are barred from taking
out loans, they may be eligible to receive distributions under
liberalized procedures.
Teacher reassigned after
banning Spanish in class
A third-grade teacher who punished her students for
speaking Spanish in her classroom has been reassigned
just days after MALDEF contacted school officials about
the incident. MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense
and Educational Fund) wrote to school officials on August
24, after receiving complaints from parents that a teacher
at Emerson Elementary School banned English-learner students from speaking Spanish and later punished those who
did so by requiring them to sit on the floor, away from their
classmates. In the letter to school officials, MALDEF warned
that such actions are unlawful and a likely violation of Title
VI of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits
discrimination based on race, color or national origin in programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.

This week, President Obama called on
Republicans in Congress to take action and vote to fund
the Administration’s response to the Zika virus. In February,
the President asked Congress to fund emergency resources,
including mosquito control, fast-tracking diagnostics tests
and vaccines, tracking the spread of the virus, and monitoring women and babies with Zika. The President continues
to direct his Administration do what it can without help
from Congress, with the primary focus of protecting pregnant women and families planning to have children. The
CDC continues to work with state public health officials and
has an emergency response team on the ground in South
Florida. Agencies have moved to expedite the development
of a vaccine, and the administration is working with the
private sector to develop more options to test and prevent
infection.

Republican River basin, as the Republican River Compact
Administration signed two resolutions. Representatives
from the three states have been meeting monthly for over
two years, in an effort to change the approach and improve
how they manage interstate water matters. This effort has
created a new focus on transparency and certainty as all
three states work to serve their water users. The intent of
these resolutions is to replace the need for annual reviews
and instead provide long-term surety to water users.

How 9/11 changed our lives
Donald Trump’s remarks about

Vietnam War. This is particularly
important because when selected,
most Americans at the time had no

Service in the Vietnam War was the last time America
sent an army of draftees into battle. Future wars were to be
fought by volunteers that saw military service as a career
choice and a commitment to a military profession.
It is under these new conditions that the September
11, 2001 attack by terrorists aboard civilian airliners came
reigning destruction from the skies in the eastern seaboard.
It was no longer about Saddam Hussein, but about Osama
Bin Laden, who possessed a radical belief system and a new
concept of total war.
Most Americans remember what they were doing when
the planes hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists brought death and
destruction to the country’s symbols of economic and military power. 9/11 proved to be not only a civilian disaster but
also a military challenge that continues to grow and change
as time goes on.
Our family’s 9/11 experience was much like that of
others that have military members and on that fateful day,
our attention was on the Pentagon because that was one
of the assignments of the First Helicopter Squadron out of
Andrews Air Force Base and our son was one of its pilots.
We did not let our guard down until satisfied that everything
was in hand.
As it turned out however, 9/11 was really not over for our
family as we did not ask and were not told what really happened on that day other than the fact that Andrews closed
down and our son did not come home until the next day. It
was not until 17 months later that in the middle of tragedy
we came to understand a little more of the struggle to save
and secure people in the nation’s capital.
On a visit to the Bethesda Medical Center in February
2003 our son and pregnant daughter-in-law found out that
the baby she was carrying had died and would not be born
as scheduled the following week. The parents gathered in
Maryland to be with our children as we grieved and made
preparations for travel and the burial of the baby at Fort
Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
It was during our stay in our son’s and daughter-inlaw’s home that one of the parents discovered in a bedroom
drawer an Air Medal awarded our son for bravery above and
beyond the call of duty during the 9/11 event. That turned out
to be the first of 16 air medals among many others that have
characterized service in challenging times including deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan and Africa.
It is true that military service is a career choice. Yet,
it is also an indispensable part of defending and securing
America for the next generation.
Looking back on this country’s struggle to overcome
terrorism around the world, one can clearly see the moment
we call 9/11 as the significant beginning that has colored
and characterized everything we have done to earn a victory
against forces we really know so little about. Many families
like ours have had a front seat view of that struggle and still
find ourselves trying to understand what is the end game
to 9/11.

para nuestra familias ya que preguntamos y no se nos dijo
que realmente había sucedido en esos días, solamente que

Still taking flight in Colorado Springs
After nearly 60 years, the Air Force
Academy continues to shine

The Air Force Academy has been a staple
of Colorado for over 60 years. Nestled in the
foothills of Colorado Springs, the Academy has
been featured as not only a school of academic
prowess, but one that upholds the Oath of
Allegiance under which every cadet swears
when he or she is enlisted.
History
The Academy began as a vision in the late
1940s and began to make heartened progress
in 1949 when Secretary of Defense James
Forrestal appointed a board of military and
civilian educators. The need came from the Air
Force becoming a separate service from the
nation’s military service academies in 1947.
On that board were Dwight D. Eisenhower,
then Columbia University President, and Robert
L. Stearns, University of Colorado President. They were tasked
with recommending a general system of education for the
Army, Navy and Air Force.
Through legislation, Congress authorized the Academy in
1954, but a site still needed to be selected. Then-Secretary of
the Air Force, Harold E. Talbot was commissioned with finding
that site. He traveled 21,000 miles and considered 580 proposed sites in 45 states, before narrowing the location to three
possible sites. The concern with Colorado was its proximity to
the mountains, which may contribute to high winds that could
affect flight training. After aviator Charles Lindbergh declared
the site safe for flying, the Academy had its home.
Commitment
The Air Force Academy strives to maintain its commitment to academic excellence and service. The education
offered at the Academy carries a value of $416,000, but that
at the Academy, cadets sign an agreement
stating that they will fulfill their service obligation. Those obligations include completing
the course of instruction at the Academy and
accepting an appointment as a commissioned
officer in the Air Force for at least eight years
after graduation – five of which must be active
duty.
Women in the Academy
The Air Force Academy has gone through
several changes since its first graduating class
of 1959, but no change has been larger than
the admission of women into the Academy in
1976. Public Law 94-106 signed by President
Gerald Ford in 1975 paved the way so women
could also become cadets.

The Cherry Creek Trail starts at
Confluence Park where the Cherry Creek and
South Platte Rivers converge. Approximately
half of the 25 mile-long trail is part of the
Denver Parks and Recreation ‘Urban Trails’
system. The path extends south through

the Denver portion ending at Cherry Creek
State Park. In some stretches, the trail and
adjacent river are at eye level where one can
see for great lengths all those on and around
the path. Other parts are cavernous and
walled from city traffic, replete with underpasses, water drainage pipes, trees and
natural grass. The attributes that make for a
peaceful bike ride away from city bustle are
the same that provide cover for those wanted
to hide illegal activity from authorities.

Jeff Walter is a regular commuter on the
path. He mocks the fact that Denver government has resources for a speed trap on the
path while “stumbling addicts hide under
bridges.” He adds, “Classifying these folks
as Urban Travelers isn’t doing anything.”

Dr. Juan Hernández is Texas-born with Mexican ties so

cabinet. As co-founder of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas,

“Beyond immigration, he [Trump] has insulted women,
imitated a handicap person, saying he doesn’t understand what
the KKK stands for,” Hernández continues, “I’m glad to be on
the opposing side. I’m not going to be one of those with the
water hose during the fight for civil rights. I want to be remembered as someone who stood up and said it’s wrong the way we
have treated immigrants.”
Hernández never considered Clinton, citing issues of
integrity, “She is on the left, on the edge of the word those
in Latin America have not liked for so long, corruption. She
wouldn’t do the dangerous things Trump would do… but her
party has taken the nation to an extreme left, where most
citizens are not.”
Knowing what he did not like in Trump or Clinton, it took
the Republican strategist and CNN en Español contributor a
while to find his candidate. This month, Hernández signed
on to the Johnson Weld 2016 campaign as an advisor and as
Chairman of Hispanics for Johnson Weld. “At this moment in
history, there is a third option. Gary Johnson has incredible
personality – he’s climbed Everest, he has admitted at times
that he may be wrong. On marijuana, we’ve tried everything
else. We need to put legalization on the table as with every
option. Most Americans believe marijuana should be legalized,
and our system should be reformed for the undocumented. His
perspective fits like a glove.”
Hernández is not the only prominent Latino to join the
Johnson presidential campaign. This week Lionel Sosa, one
of the country’s most influential Latinos according to Time
magazine, added his name as a Johnson supporter. As an otherwise staunch supporter of Republicans and former advisor
to President’s Bush and Reagan, Sosa announced earlier this
year that if Trump won the nomination, he would leave the
Republican Party.

Sabiendo que a él no le gustan ni Trump ni Clinton, le
tomó su tiempo a un estratega republicano y un contribuidor del
CNN en Español encontrar su candidato. Este mes, Hernández
firmó con la compaña de Johnson Weld 2016 como consejero y
presidente de hispanics for Johnson Weld. “En este momento
de la historia, hay una tercera opción. Gary Johnson tiene una
personalidad increíble– él ha escalado el Everest, él ha admitido
a veces puede estar equivocado. Acerca de la mariguana, hemos

Johnson is not the only third party candidate vying for
votes but has the most support and is the only third party candidate that is on the ballot in all 50 states. Green Party candidate,
Jill Stein ranks fourth with 3.6 percent according to a four-way
matchup between Clinton, Trump, Johnson and Stein.
Hernández reminds that Abraham Lincoln was a third
party candidate and that dark horse candidates can get elected,
like his former boss, President Vicente Fox of Mexico, “In the
Fox campaign, we displaced a party that had been in place for 71
years. I’m a believer. Unlike some other third party candidates
who are making statements – anti-Trump or pro-environment – Gary Johnson is in it to win.”

How 4-H reaches the State Fair
The State Fair ended on Labor
Day, but the work of many children
and young adults was a part of the
State 4-H competitions. Children
from all around the state compete
for the state titles that they will
hold close to their hearts for years
to come. They’ve worked through
the summer with the 4-H motto in
their heads. They attended every

club meeting, kept detailed records
of their animals, and went to every
community project in hopes of reaching the State Fair gates.
The children are enjoying their youth and learning
things along the way. There are events for almost everything
you can think of, and each one has a diligent youth working
hard to make a name for themselves in that category.
There are events for horseriding, tack making, cake decorating, rabbit judging, dog training, and so much more. The
rules for each event are different, but they all add up to the
same thing--hard work and dedication on the part of a child.
Kerstin Rilling, 21, just left her career with 4-H and she
has been to State many times. She was in the rabbit showing
clubs and worked hard to received the titles that she now has.
Rilling recalls how she started 4-H, “It was a starter project,
something to help me understand how the State Fair worked.
It wasn’t as expensive as buying a larger animal so it was
affordable while simultaneously teaching me responsibility
and providing me with an animal I could handle well at the
age of 8”.
In order for children to make it to the State Fair they
have to buy products for their animals and keep a log on how
much their animal cost them over the summer. In order for
them to make it to State the records must be put together
well and so must the actual project. One of the goals of 4-H
is to learn how to be independent and how to care for something on your own.
“I liked 4-H. It kept me busy during the summer months
and I got hands on experience with livestock. I got to hang
out with people who had similar interests and made lifelong
friends across the nation. It made me appreciate the hard
work that goes into raising livestock,” Riling said.
The amount of work that goes into the State Fair is
something children can take into their adult lives. Qualifying
for the State Fair is something that is highly attributed to all
the years and months of hard work. The State Fair is more
than going to Pueblo and getting to see the professionals go
to work. It is also building the minds of the next generation
to be a working member of society.
4-H goes further than just the 11 years you are enrolled.
La feria del estado termino en el día del trabajo, pero
el trabajo de muchos jovenes era parte de las competencias
del 4-H . Niños de todo el estado tratan de competir por
títulos del 4-H que tienen cerca de su corazón por años en

Kerstin Rilling, de 21 años, ha dejado apenas su carrera

comprar un animal más grande y era barato mientas que al
mismo tiempo me enseñaba a ser responsable y me dio un
animal que yo podía manejar bien a la edad de 8 años”.
Para que los niños pudieran ir a la feria del estado ellos
tenían que comprar productos para sus animales y mantener
un registro de cuanto les costó el animal durante el verano.
Para poder llegar al estado los registros debían ser bien
mantenidos y así debía ser el proyecto. Uno de los objetivos
del 4-H es aprender como ser independiente y como cuidar
algo por sí mismo.
“A mí me gustaba el 4-H. Me mantuvo ocupada en los
meses de verano y tuve experiencia física con animales.
Pude compartir con gente que tenía intereses parecidos e
hice amigos de toda la vida en la nación. Me hizo reconocer
que el trabajo duro que tiene criar animales,” dijo Rilling.
La cantidad de trabajo que significa la feria del estado
es algo que los niños pueden llevar a su vida de adultos.
Calificar para la feria del estado es algo que se atribuye a
todos los años y meses de trabajo duro. La feria del estado
es más que ir a Pueblo y poder ver a los profesionales haciendo su trabajo. Es también crear las mentes de la siguiente
generación para ser un miembro trabajador de la sociedad.
El 4-H va más lejos que solamente los 11 años de participación. Los miembros aprenden cosas que pueden hacer en
el futuro y el valor del dinero y el duro trabajo. “Me convirtió
en la persona que yo soy. Yo sé cómo hacer presupuestos
y como invertir. Me enseño a como comprometerme por
largo tiempo, que he usado en el trabajo y también en la
Universidad. Cuando uno tiene que salir dos veces por día,
todos los días, sin vacaciones, para alimentar, dar de beber
y limpiar lo de los animales uno aprende lo que es el trabajo
duro. Cuando uno vende ese animal o lugar en la división
entonces uno sabe que el ardúo trabajo ha pagado con
creces.” dijo Riling.
Cada año hay cientos de niños que entran a la feria del
estado y aprenden acerca del futuro mientras se divierten.
Ellos llevan su duro trabajo y lo colocan en las manos de
adultos para ayudarlos a cimentar su futuro por sí mismos.
Ellos hacen lo que dice su lema. Hacer de lo bueno algo aun
mejor (To Make the Best Better), y ellos viven su juramento.
Mi cabeza para pensar mejor, mi corazón para ser más leal,
mis manos para un servicio más largo, mi salud para vivir
mejor, para mi club, mi comunidad, mi país, y mi mundo.

well as in college. When you have to go outside twice a day,
every day, with no vacations, to feed, water, and clean up
after your animals you learn what hard work is. When you
sell that animal or place in your division then you know your
hard work has paid off.” Rilling said.
Every year there are hundreds of kids that place in the
State Fair and learn about their future while they are having
fun. They take all of their hard work and place it in the hands
of the adults to help them shape their future selves. They do
it just like their motto says. To Make the Best Better, and
they live their pledge. My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart
to greater loyalty, My Hands to larger service, and My Health
to better living, For my club, my community, my country, and
my world

Colorado Rockies bounce back!
The Colorado Rockies went 12 15 for the month of August just under
.500 for the month. However, just
six days into September and about
a month from the end of the regular season, the Rockies are at .500
with decisive wins against divisional
opponents, the San Francisco Giants
and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Colorado put on a hitting performance last Friday for Rockies fans

and never looking back.
Colorado is scheduled to wrap up their three-game
series against the San Francisco Giants this week after
winning game one Monday night, shutting out the Giants
6 - 0. The Rockies will face divisional foes the San Diego
Padres in San Diego this Friday in a three-game series that
wraps up on Sunday before heading to Arizona to face the
Diamondbacks again. Colorado hopes to keep their win loss
ratio at .500, despite not making it to the post-season.
In other sports the Denver Broncos have finally trimmed
their team down to 53 players with many big names cut.
Mark Sanchez, Ronnie Hillman, Britton Colquitt are some of
the names that did not make the roster, but will likely find
homes among the other 31 teams. In fact, Colquitt signed a
deal with the Cleveland Browns this past week and details of
that deal have not been made public as of yet.
The 53-man roster for the Broncos consists of long-term
planning and great depth in Denver’s ferocious defense,
which has taken front seat yet again after last season’s
record-breaking season. This has been an unlikely string
of events since Gary Kubiak, an offensive-minded coach
took the reigns in January 2015. Although Kubiak’s explanation for releasing Sanchez was that he wanted to head in a
different direction with younger quarterbacks like Austin
Davis who was recently released by the Cleveland Browns.
Denver’s quarterback gallery is definitely young and with an
offensive-minded coach like Kubiak, we can all expect some
pretty interesting offensive schemes to showcase young
legs, arms abilities in the regular season and in post-season
action.

Los atributos que hacen un viaje pacífico
del ruido de la ciudad son los mismos que
cubren a esos que quieren esconder las
actividades ilícitas de las autoridades.
Mientras que los oficiales de la ciudad,
incluyendo al alcalde Hancock, deploran
el cannabis legal como el motivo de las
poblaciones que buscan salida del 16th
Street Mall, una atracción más siniestra
está funcionando en el Cherry Creek Bike
Path. La heroína.
En el verano del 2014 el Center for
Disease Control (CDC por sus siglas en
inglés) reportó estadísticas asombrosas con
respecto al uso de la heroína en los Estados
Unidos. En las décadas anteriores al 2011,
los blancos en sus 30s fueron casi todo el
aumento de las muertes por heroína mientras que el índice para los afroamericanos y

Tom Frieden reportó que “…estudios recientes sugieren que tres de cada cuatro
personas que están usando actualmente la
heroína comenzó con sedantes prescritos”. La abogada Jessica Peck esta muy con-
sciente del consumo de drogas y los vínculos
mortalidad. Peck vive a lo largo del carril de
las bicicletas pero conociendo los peligros de
la droga de primera mano, no es seguro que
la convierta en un lugar de visita en estos
días, refiriéndose a la apuñalada en este
verano por el paso subterráneo cerca de su
casa. En su práctica legal ella defiende con
frecuencia a abusadores de la droga, pero su
perfil ha cambiado en los últimos años. “Las
clínicas de metadona están apareciendo y
las ciudades están al máximo. Antes sucedía
que mis clientes “pro bono” conseguían
su metadona en la Colfax… Madres trabajadoras elegantes conseguían la droga
idéntica con un nombre diferente de 800 a
1,500 dólares por mes. Luego el debate de la
droga contra el dolor nocturno se hizo serio.
De repente las personas elegantes habían
destruido sus vidas. Los co-conspiradores
los médicoa con su compasión del dolor.
Nadie quería hacer algo peligroso. Nadie se
podía escapar. Los pacientes reales no se
frenaron apropiadamente y se les dio una
ayuda de cero en la decodificación. Y claro
se cambiaron a la heroína, por supuesto”.
Más barata y fácil de conseguir que los
sedantes prescritos, la heroína fácilmente
de comprar en el Cherry Creek Bike Path.
La violencia acompañaba el intercambio de
drogas. En junio, un tiroteo en sábado en el
