O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness,
who in fasting, prayer and almsgiving
have shown us a remedy for sin,
look graciously on this confession of our lowliness,
that we, who are bowed down by our conscience,
may always be lifted up by your mercy.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Reading I: Exodus 20: 1-17
Keep my commandments.
First Reading Background
In every covenant, there are laws, duties, and
responsibilities that must be followed.
The Ten Commandments express the central law of the
covenant made on Mt. Sinai.
They outline the characteristic relationships with God
and with neighbor.
Reading II: 1 Corinthians 1: 22-25
Christ is the power of God.
Second Reading Background
Signs are an important part of Israel’s theology, as Paul
notes in today’s passage.
In Israel’s life, signs always convey the message of the
presence and power of God.
For those who can see, Christ is the ultimate sign of the
presence and power of God.
Gospel: John 2: 13-25
I will raise it in three days!
Gospel Background
For Israel the temple is a sign of the presence of God.
Jesus cleanses the sign because it is no longer conveying
the message.
Another message is added, "Destroy this temple, and in
three days I will raise it up." Jesus transfers the sign of
God’s presence from the temple to his own body, raised
from death.

RCIA INQUIRY SESSION
RCIA Inquiry Sessions have ended and will begin
again in August 2012. We are presently in the
Catechumenate preparing for the
Sacraments of Initiation. If anyone
is interested in studying about the
Catholic Faith they may register
with Sr. Dolores. The next Inquiry sessions will begin in the
Fall. ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION
Adult Confirmation Sessions are taking
place twice a month. Presently registration
for these classes is closed. Any adult who is
interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation may
register with Sr. Dolores. The next adult preparation program
will begin in January 2013.

Married Singles Lifestyle –The Married Singles
Lifestyle describes couples that may have lost a sense
of closeness they once had as marriage partners and
are living more like roommates. Retrouvaille teaches
couples how to survive times like these in their
marriages. This program has helped 10’s of 1000’s of couples
experiencing difficulty at all levels of marital distress from

Shepherds Field Olive Wood Handcrafts
Next weekend, a group from the Holy Land (Bethlehem &
Jerusalem) will be selling religious articles after masses on
behalf of the Christian Catholic families in Bethlehem.
These families work in small workshops to produce
religious articles from olive wood that represent the Christian
art of the Holy Land. They were used to sell their products to
pilgrims who visit the Holy Land but these days they face an
economic hardship as there are few tourists who go there
because of security issues. Many of them immigrated and left
the Holy Land. The percentage of Christians in the holy land
has dropped to less than 2%. If this hardship continues as it is
now, we believe in a few years there will be no Christian people
in Jerusalem or Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. Sales will
be used to help and support the Catholics in the Holy Land and
to encourage them not to emigrate.
The L.O.V.E. ministry has been part of Sacred Heart/St. Benedict
Parish for over twenty years helping reconnect the homebound to
the church.

Attention Women of our Parish
WINGS (Women IN God’s Spirit) is back! Morning
sessions will meet on Mondays in St. Benedict hall
on March 12th and 19th at 9:30am Evening sessions
are being planned and dates will be forthcoming. Gather with
other women in sharing your faith through prayer and
reflection. “Taste and see the goodness of our Lord” from a

NEW BEGINNINGS—the parish’s separated/divorced group presents:
“Divorced. Catholic. Now What?” This is a special program
addressing the concerns of separated/
divorced Catholics. It offers support and
addresses important issues that arise as
a result of a divorce. The strong
emphasis on prayer, scripture and
Church teachings leads to healing and a
better relationship with Christ. Our next
meeting is Wednesday, March 14th
at 7:00pm in the Meeting Room of

Shepherds Field artesanías en madera de olivo Próximo
fin de semana, un grupo de la Tierra Santa (Belén y Jerusalén)
será la venta de artículos religiosos después de las misas en
nombre de las familias cristianas católicas en Belén. Estas
familias trabajan en pequeños talleres para producir artículos
religiosos de madera de olivo que representan el arte cristiano
de Tierra Santa. Ellos estaban acostumbrados a vender sus

For Dr. Greer, the tipping point
came with a number. He was a young
resident in a Miami Hospital in 1984 and
his patient was a homeless man the police
had brought in. The man had advanced
tuberculosis and was so far gone he could
not speak. No one knew his name: he was
identified only by “Number 9” at the end of
his bed. Dr. Greer did everything he could to find relatives or
friends—anyone who could comfort this man who was past the
help of modern medicine. No one was found, and the man died
a few days later, essentially alone. Dr Greer is a
gastroenterologist and liver specialist. He could have a topnotch practice on wealthy Ocean Drive, Miami, but Patient
Number 9 had left his mark. Dr. Pedro José Greer realized that
every patient has a story and a soul: their symptoms are the
mask that conceals the dreams, hopes, successes, and failures
of a human life. Soon after Patient Number 9 died, Dr. Greer
opened Camillus Health Concern in Miami. In a quarter century
of service, Camillus has grown to serve ten thousand homeless
men, women, and children annually—people who have no other
reliable access to health care. Each year at Greer’s Saint John
Bosco Clinic, six thousand immigrants—many undocumented—
receive medical treatment in a warm and sympathetic setting.
For Greer, diagnosis and treatment is the easy part of
doctoring. What’s more important is compassion for the patient
as a person. The winner of three presidential awards, two papal
awards, and the MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellowship,
Pedro José Greer has attracted the attention of the rich and
powerful, but his mission remains the same. Everyone he helps
ensures that Patient Number 9 is never forgotten. Everyone has
a name. Everyone is treated with care and compassion.

Today, we are reminded of Jesus’ call to see him in all those we
encounter. The Catholic Relief Services Collection sees Jesus
in displaced families, those who seek to change unjust laws, and
those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance around

AARP Offers Tax-Aide Program: The AARP TaxAide program offers free personal tax counseling and
preparation assistance to taxpayers of low-to-middle
income, with special attention to those ages 60 and
older. Volunteers will be available to help residents on
Monday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Feb. 10
through April 13, at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West
Street. Participants should bring all the tax documents they
have received in the mail, last year's tax return and all relevant
information on income and expenses. Volunteer counselors are
not trained to assist in preparing tax returns that report
business, rental or partnership income. Call ahead to make an

TOTAL ALLEGIANCE
In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of
covenant—as a preparation for the baptismal covenant
celebrated at Easter—occupies an important place in our cycle
of Lenten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship
between two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual
accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When
God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it
was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would forever permit
them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the
Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law,
summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten
Commandments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the
Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship
with Jesus—ritualized in baptism—demands a total allegiance

En semanas anteriores hemos visto cómo el tema de la
alianza, en preparación para la alianza bautismal que se celebra
en Semana Santa, ocupa un lugar importante en nuestro ciclo de
lecturas de Cuaresma. La noción de una alianza como una
relación entre dos partes lleva consigo la expectativa de la
responsabilidad mutua y la fidelidad a los términos del pacto.
Cuando Dios forjó la alianza con el pueblo judío en el monte
Sinaí, se trataba de una promesa de la protección de Dios, y que
siempre les permitiría el acceso familiar como Pueblo
Escogido. Por su parte, el pueblo judío debería observar los
requisitos de la ley, que se resumen aquí en los Diez
Mandamientos. Para estar en una relación de pacto con el Señor
Dios requiere una relación exclusiva, al igual que ser discípulo
de Jesús –que expresamos ritualmente en el Bautismo– exige

Thoughtful Moments—Never say “never”
When discouraged, children can get stuck thinking negatively. “I’ll never
learn to do this.” “I’ll never be good at that.” “Never” may be part of our
vocabulary, but it isn’t part of God’s. The next time you hear “never” from
your children, remind them that we can do many things in life with God’s
help. “For with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37).

We not only met, but we exceeded our goal of reading 180,000 pages.
Our kids read 197,520 pages in the month of February. Congratulations to
all! The winning class was Mrs. Andrade's 2nd grade class, reading a
total of 27,524 pages. Way to go Spartans!
How to raise a reader:
Make Regular Reading a Family Value: Fit reading into your family
lifestyle. Set aside time for reading only -- turning off the TV, computer,
and cell phone. Encourage focused reading time, either for independent
reading or reading aloud. Take preschoolers to story time hours at
libraries and bookstores. For older kids, a parent-kid book club can be fun.
Read to kids at bedtime. Provide time and space for your kids to read for
pleasure in the car (if they don't get car sick!), on vacation, every day
after homework is done, on their own before bed. Warning: It could be

How to Handle Body Image Issues- for Girls and Boys.
Talking to girls about their bodies is one of the hardest things parents
can do; but the constant bombardment of messages about desirable
weight and appearance makes it a crucial discussion. And the obsession
with having a "better" body is far from a girls-only issue. Even if they
don't express their concerns, boys are just as affected by media
influences.
Our revised School wide learning expectations reflect our students are on

Momentos para reflexionar-Nunca digas "nunca"
Cuando se desanimen, los niños pueden quedar atrapados pensando
negativamente: "Nunca voy a aprender a hacer esto", "Nunca voy a ser bueno
en eso." La palabra "No" puede ser parte de nuestro vocabulario, pero no en el
vocabulario de Dios. La próxima vez que escuche pronunciar a sus hijos la

Cómo criar a un buen lector: Haga de la lectura regular un valor de la
familia. Haga de la lectura un estilo de vida familiar. Dedique tiempo sólo para
leer - apague el televisor, la computadora y el teléfono celular. Fomente tiempo
centrado sólo en la lectura, ya sea para la lectura independiente o para la
lectura en alta voz. Lleve a sus niños en edad pre-escolar a horas de lectura de

♦ Parish Registration: In order that we may better serve you,
please register in the parish. This way you are known to us when
requesting the services of the church. Registration forms are
available in the literature rack in the vestibule on the parish web
site or at the pastoral office. Also, please notify the parish office of
changes of address, phone, or e-mail, or if you are moving out of
the area. Changes can be emailed to [email protected] or simply drop a note in the collection basket.
♦ Baptism: Baptisms for infants to six year olds are celebrated at
Sacred Heart Church. Preparation for baptism should begin at least
two months prior to the desired date. The child’s birth certificate
and registration fee is required when registering your child for
baptism. Parents & Godparents must attend a pre-baptism class
and you may sign up for the class at registration time. All Baptism
Classes are held in the hall at St. Benedict Church on Saturdays at
2:00pm (arrive early to check in) and we kindly ask that you leave
little ones with a caregiver. As a courtesy to those in attendance,
doors will be closed at when class begins and all late arrivals will
be rescheduled. A baptism date can be set after registration and

♦ Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish
as soon as they become engaged or at least nine months prior to
desired marriage date in order to fulfill necessary marriage
preparation requirements. Contact Natalie Velazquez (831) 6379212 to begin paperwork and to set up an appointment with
one of the priests.
♦ Anointing of the Sick: Often, you may be able to arrange an
anointing by speaking with a priest after a mass. Please call the
parish office if you need to receive the anointing of the sick at
home. In emergency situations when the office is closed, the
answering service will relay the information to one of the priests.
In case of hospitalization, let the hospital staff know that you would
like to have a Catholic priest see you and they will relay the
message to the parish office.
♦ Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please
contact Sr. Catherine Lockshire (831) 637-9212 ext. 127 and she
will arrange an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to visit
you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff that you
are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy Communion and they
will relay the message to the parish office.
♦ Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the
parish office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
There is a $10.00 mass stipend to request a mass.
♦ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament is celebrated at Sacred Heart Church every
Wednesday from 7:00am to 9:00pm and on Sundays from 1:00pm
to 3:00pm.
♦ Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, the
mortuary will generally assist you in making some of the funeral
arrangements as well as contact us to confirm date and time of
funeral. Please contact the parish office to speak to the priest
about particulars of the funeral service itself.
♦ House Blessings: please, contact the parish priest personally
or call the parish office to make an appointment.
♦ Car Blessings: The priest is usually available to bless your new
car after Masses (weekday and weekend).
♦ Registración parroquial: para servirles mejor, por favor,
