Secondary Bake Sale Venta de Pasteles de Secundaria La compañía productora conformada por estudiantes de Secundaria, Tiny Piano Productions, organizó una fantástica venta de pasteles con el objetivo de recaudar fondos para la obra de teatro de este año: Arsenic and Old Lace. Agradecemos a todos quienes donaron los deliciosos pasteles y galletas. Más de una persona me comentó que fue ¡la mejor venta de pasteles en la historia del Colegio! Un agradecimiento especial va para Antonella Torres, Hannah Mullee, Lea Friant y Wendy Suter por manejar el quiosco de venta con mucha eficiencia y buena disposición. The student‐led production company, Tiny Piano Productions, organized a fantastic bake sale to raise money for this year’s play, Arsenic and Old Lace. Thank you to everyone who made the scrumptious cakes and cookies. I was told on more than one occasion that this was BSQ’s best bake sale yet! A special thank you goes to Antonella Torres, Hannah Mullee, Lea Friant and Wendy Suter for managing the stall with smiles and efficiency. Katie Charing Director of the Secondary Production 2
Mozart: a Musical Genius Mozart: Un Genio Musical When you think about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, do the first words that come to mind include “boring, stuffy, old‐fashioned?” Well, if you have a child in Years 1‐9, they can tell you that Mozart is anything but boring. Beginning this month, the music curriculum is featuring a different “Composer of the Month.” We started in January with one of the greatest composers who ever lived. Born in 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart was a musical prodigy who went on his first concert tour at age 7, wrote his first symphony at age 8, and at age 11 composed his first opera. Mozart had a wonderful sense of humour and had a unique way of living that was completely centred on music and composing. Although his life was cut tragically short – Mozart died of kidney failure and malnutrition at the age of thirty‐five – more people purchase the music of Mozart, even today, than any other composer. His musical genius ensures that his music is still performed and enjoyed over 200 years after his death. Cuando piensas en Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ¿acaso las palabras que te vienen a la mente son “aburrido, soso, anticuado”? Pues bien, si tienes un hijo/hija en Años 1 a 9, ellos te podrán decir que Mozart no tiene nada de aburrido. A partir de este mes, el currículo de Música incluye al “Compositor del Mes”. En enero empezamos con uno de los más importantes compositores de la historia. Nacido en 1756, en Salzburgo, Austria, Mozart fue un prodigio de la música; realizó su primera gira de conciertos a la edad de 7 años; compuso su primera sinfonía a los 8 y a los 11 su primera ópera. Mozart tenía un sentido del humor muy especial y una forma de ver la vida completamente centrada en la música y la composición. Aunque su vida se vio truncada a una temprana edad (murió por una falla renal y desnutrición a la edad de 35), más gente compra su legado musical, incluso en el presente, que el de cualquier otro compositor. Su genialidad musical ha asegurado que su música aún se escuche y disfrute más de 200 años después de su muerte. 3
Los grupos de la Sección Primaria han disfrutado mucho aprendiendo sobre la vida de Mozart, su comida favorita (bollos de masa y col agria) y escuchando sus piezas más famosas. La Secundaria Media ha debatido sobre su biografía y se ha concentrado en sus oberturas de ópera. Al volver de la pausa de febrero habrá un nuevo compositor listo para que lo estudiemos y disfrutemos. Mientras tanto, esperamos que disfruten la alegría de la música de Mozart en compañía de sus hijos. Tonya Robles Head of the Music Department The Primary School classes have enjoyed learning about Mozart’s life – his favourite food was liver dumplings and sauerkraut – and listening to some of his most famous pieces. The Middle School classes have discussed his biography and focused on his opera overtures. When we return from the February break, there will be a new composer to study and enjoy. Until then, we hope that you will share in the joy of Mozart’s music with your children. Ambassador For a Day Embajadora por un Día El Embajador Británico Patrick Mullee presentó sus credeciales al Vice‐Presidente (Presidente encargado) Lenín Moreno y al Canciller encargado, Pablo Villagómez, durante una impresionante ceremonia que reafirmó las relaciones amistosas entre las dos naciones. British Ambassador Patrick Mullee has presented his credentials to the Vice‐President (and acting President) Lenin Moreno and acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pablo Villagómez, in an impressive ceremony which reaffirmed the friendship between the two nations. 4
Antes de la ceremonia, un automóvil oficial del Gobierno recogió al Embajador Mullee para llevarlo al Palacio Presidencial de Carondelet. La delegación de la Presidencia recibió al Embajador Mullee y su comitiva, conformada por su esposa, Joanna Mullee, su hija, Hannah Mullee, la estudiante del British School Lucía Paz (quien acompañó al Embajador luego de haber ganado el premio de “Embajadora por un día”), así como la Oficial de Relaciones Públicas de la Embajada, Martha Crowley y la Oficial de Medios Digitales, Andrea Durán. La ceremonia se realizó en el Salón Amarillo. El Vice‐
Presidente Lenín Moreno conversó con el Embajador Mullee antes de darle la bienvenida a su comitiva y fotografiarse con la familia Mullee. La ceremonia concluyó con el Himno Nacional Británico, entonado por la banda del Palacio Presidencial.
Before the ceremony, Ambassador Mullee was picked up from his residence in an official government car before heading to the presidential palace, Palacio de Carondelet. The Presidential delegation received Ambassador Mullee and his party, which included the Ambassador’s wife Joanna Mullee, his daughter Hannah Mullee, British School student Lucia Paz (who was accompanying the Ambassador after winning a contest to be “Ambassador for a Day”), as well as the British Embassy’s Public Relations Officer Martha Crowley and Digital Media Officer Andrea Durán. The ceremony took place in the Salón Amarillo. Vice President Lenin Moreno spoke with Ambassador Mullee before greeting and taking photos with the Ambassador’s family. The ceremony concluded with the British National Anthem, played by the Presidential Palace’s band. The Secondary English and Drama Department and Tiny Piano Productions are thrilled to announce that tickets will go on sale for this year’s Secondary Production, Arsenic and Old Lace, on Monday 18th February. 5
Esta fascinante comedia negra tendrá como protagonistas a Ponto Moreno en el papel de Mortimer Brewster, Alejandra Montaluisa como la Tía Abby, Jacoba Ubidia como la Tía Martha, Michelle Cobo, Matthew Fajardo, Alicia Sánchez, Juan David Uribe, Joaquín Burbano De Lara, Juan Manuel Nájera, Daniela Urresta, Victoria Campoverde, Diego Santos y Alejandro Chiriboga. Muchos otros estudiantes, familiares y profesores forman parte del equipo de producción, ente ellos Ms. Sawchak, Ms. Alvarez, Evelyn Cañas, Valeria Castro, José Noboa, Camila y Daniela Andino. Se trata de una producción que ha involucrado a muchos miembros de nuestra comunidad y esperamos que todos la disfruten. Las presentaciones se llevarán a cabo en el Teatro Ocho y Medio, en Quito, los días 6, 7 y 8 de marzo de 2013 a las 7.30 pm. Las entradas costarán $10 para estudiantes y $12 para adultos. Para adquirir sus entradas, por favor comunicarse con Marcela Ojeda en la recepción a partir del 18 de febrero. Si desea pagar con cheque, por favor hágalo a nombre de The British School Quito. Katie Charing & Tiny Piano Productions Book Week Semana del Libro y la Lectura La semana pasada celebramos al libro y la lectura en nuestro Colegio. Tuvimos autores invitados que compartieron con los estudiantes su experiencia y conocimientos sobre el Yasuní, en el caso de Kelly Swing, y sobre identidad por parte de Santiago Páez. La lectura compartida entre estudiantes de Primaria y Secundaria fue como siempre un momento placentero en el que rescatamos la tradición de leer y escuchar cuentos. Last week we celebrated Book Week at BSQ. We had guest writers who shared experiences and knowledge with our students. Yasuni was shared with our students by Kelly Swing; and Santiago Páez shared with us about the knowledge of identity. As with every year the Buddy Reading among students in Primary and Secondary sections was a thoroughly enjoyable activity where the traditions of reading and storytelling were brought back for the pleasure of our children. 6

La Feria del Libro atrajo la atención de los estudiantes y de los padres de familia por dos días, esperamos que ahora estén disfrutando de sus elecciones. Los niños de Primaria se vistieron de personajes de libros haciendo gala de creatividad e ingenio en la elaboración de sus disfraces. Así mismo presentaron sus marcadores de libros, los cuales junto con los disfraces serán premiados en la asamblea de este viernes. Es un placer para nosotras observar que leer y celebrar la literatura sigue siendo una actividad muy importante dentro de la comunidad del BSQ. Please enjoy the pictures in our visual collage; more can be seen around School. The Book Fair attracted students and parents over two days all of whom we hope you are enjoying their book purchases. The students in Primary dressed up as their favourite book characters in costumes that should their creativity and imagination. We also had the bookmark contest. The winners for the best costume and best bookmark will be announced at this Friday’s assembly. It is a pleasure for us to see that reading and enjoying books are such important activities within our school community. The campaign to donate second hand books to help schools in need is still ongoing. Please bring your books and put them into the baskets outside each section’s library. From the Desk of the Director Desde el Escritorio de la Directora February Break Vacaciones de Febrero
De acuerdo a la nueva Ley de Educación, no habrá clases desde el día 4 al 15 de febrero. Durante la primera semana tendremos exámenes supletorios y de recuperación. También ofreceremos clases de refuerzo y recuperación para los estudiantes, o grupos, para quienes sea necesario tomarlas, por razones de aprendizaje. Si su hijo/hija necesita venir al colegio durante la semana del 4 de febrero, usted seguramente ya debe haber sido contactado/a por parte del Jefe de Sección correspondiente. Por favor, tome en cuenta que los estudiantes del BI deben asistir al Colegio durante la semana del 4 al 8 de febrero para tomar clases de recuperación para su Diploma del BI. Esta semana no es opcional para ellos. Todo estudiante que esté trabajando en su BI, y aquellos cuya asistencia ha sido requerida por los Jefes de Sección, deben venir al Colegio todos los días de esa semana. Apreciamos su apoyo para asegurar que los estudiantes asistan a clase, sean estudiantes del BI o de clases de refuerzo requeridas por el Jefe de Sección. As mandated by the new Ecuadorian education law and regulations the school is closed for normal lessons from the 4th of February to the 15th of February. During the week beginning the 4th of February we are running re‐sit and make‐up exams. We are also offering make‐up classes for students, or year levels, where it is deemed educationally necessary for the learning of the students. If your child is required to be here for the week of the 4th of February you will have already been contacted by the relevant Head of Section. Please note that all IB students are required to attend during the week of the 4th to the 8th of February for make‐up lessons for the IB Diploma. This is not an optional week. All IB students, and other students who have been asked to attend by the relevant Head of Section, must be in attendance each day. We appreciate your support with ensuring that your child/ren are in school if they are either an IB student or have been requested to attend by their Head of Section.
