A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Holy Apostles Parish Family,
This weekend we are celebrating the goodness of our first responders. We want to thank
them for serving, protecting, being there in our
time of need and putting themselves in dangerous situations to keep us safe. This weekend always reminds me that we forget our
police, fire and EMT personnel are also
mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, brothers
and sisters.
This year is especially poignant, because we
lost the lives of Lieutenant Gliniewicz and
Deputy Maness. Let's pray for their families
whose lives are changed forever. Please stop
to thank our officers, fire and EMT personnel.
We are also very grateful to be led by Police
Chief John Jones, a parishioner, and Fire Chief
Tony Heumann, a St. John's parishioner.
Today, Sunday, at 11:45 AM we will dedicate
a street being named in memory of John Shay,
who served the county emergency service and
community fire service for many years. We will
be at the main fire station on Elm Street.
Please join us.
Have a Blessed Day!
Father Paul
The Church of Holy Apostles, McHenry, IL

Couples, Come to “Spirit of Marriage”
"An extraordinary marriage is not one without conflict.
It is one where honesty, respect, and forgiveness set
the tone for resolution.” Come and join us Wednesday,
October 7, for this month's "Spirit of Marriage,” with the
topic of “Respect.” It is a free, one hour event where
you will have the opportunity to quietly focus on one
another instead of all of the daily stresses of life. We
begin promptly at 7:30 PM in the Room of Remembrance.
The Spirit of Marriage is scheduled on the first Wednesday evening of each month and all married couples are
invited. Hope to see you there!
Helping Hands Are Needed
We are all so busy that we sometimes feel we have no
time to participate in any ministries at Holy Apostles,
but here we offer the opportunity of a valuable yet not
time-consuming ministry: be a “helping hand.” We have
many people in the parish who are at various times in
need of help. A nice home-cooked meal, a cake or cookies, a ride to church or to the store would be so appreciated by them. Would you be willing to volunteer to help
on an as-needed basis for the homebound or for special
events at church? Please contact Jeanne Fraser, Pastoral Care office, at 815-385-5673, x 124, or jfraser@

Holy Apostles Mission Day—October 17
Many of us would love to reach out and be the face of
God by serving others in need but are unable to take a
mission trip to do so. Mission Day is an opportunity for
everyone to serve people in our community just for a day.
Set aside Saturday, October 17, to work on a team of
parish members to give a hand to
someone who needs assistance
maintaining their homes. Register
online on the parish website or pick
up a form in the narthex.
Are you or do you know someone in
our community (need not be parish
members) who needs help at their
home with cleaning, yard work/
landscaping, painting, or light electrical, plumbing or construction repairs? Let us add your needs to our “to do”
list on Mission Day. (We cannot guarantee that all requests for help will be met.) Contact Joe Filpi at 815385-5673 or [email protected] with your
requests for help.
Jesus’ Greatest Expression of Love...

whole world for this hour of faith you
spend with Him in the Blessed Sacrament.
Please pray about committing to one of
these open times:
Monday: 8:30 to 9 AM
Tuesday: 4 to 5 PM
Wednesday: 2 to 3 PM
Friday: 2 to 3 PM
Call Mike Thielsen at 815-385-8562 to commit your time.

Dementia Discussion Group to Meet
Those of us who are parents know that we often sacrifice to put our children's needs before our own. But
what does a parent do when, despite careful budgeting
and sacrificing, there simply isn't
any food to put on the dinner table?
The St. Vincent de Paul Society
delivers food to needy families
across the McHenry area to help
parents put meals on the table.
Food is often the most requested item when our neighbors in need call the SVdPS hotline. Your donations to
the poor box allow local parents the dignity and relief to
know their children will be fed. Whoever has a bountiful
eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
Proverbs 22:9
Do you have someone you love who is suffering from
some stage of dementia? There are many types of dementia, but it generally involves problems with thinking
or memory. The purpose of this meeting will be to talk
with one another and share stories about your loved
one with dementia. We all can learn from one another.
All are welcome: family members, the person with dementia, the caregiver, friends and anyone who wants to
know more about this condition. Our first meeting will be
Wednesday, October 14, (please note this corrected
date), 1 to 2:30 PM, in St. Ambrose room in Apostles
Bay. This meeting will be facilitated by Don Gaul, whose
wife has dementia. For more information contact
Jeanne Fraser at 815-385-5673, ext. 124 or
[email protected].

muchos rosarios.
Intenciones del Papa para octubre

Enjoy a Free Concert
Last year, our parish celebrated its 25th anniversary and
our sister Catholic parish of St. Margaret Mary in Algonquin
celebrated 100 years of ministry on the Fox River. Purely
for the sake of fun, praise, thanksgiving and celebration,
the Music Ministries from both parishes will combine to
present two epic concerts of Sacred Contemporary Music
to celebrate our respective existence! Together, we will
form a choir of over 60 singers, along with our Children's
Choirs and the various ethnic nationalities (Spanish,
Polish and Filipino) represented in our communities. A
little Irish may show up too! Admission is free but a basket
will be passed to offset expenses. Light refreshments will
be provided.

Christ, every Monday at 6 PM. in the Fr. Sherry Parish
Center. Doors open at 5:45 PM. Please contact Mayra
Rivas for information, to volunteer,
or to donate food or supplies, 815996-0076 or mrivas8520@
comcast.net. This week we served
80 guests. Last week we served
84 guests.
A new table arrangement in Fr.
Sherry Parish Center provided an
opportunity for regular guests to get
to know different tablemates and try a new seating arrangement. We're particularly proud of a number of our
guests who volunteer some of their time to help around
the Community Kitchen. It's nice to see folks helping one
another. May the Lord bless every guest and family in the
ways that they need most.

The Church of Holy Apostles, McHenry, IL
Food Truck Distribution Scheduled
Prayerfully Consider a Cursillo Weekend
The McHenry Chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society
in conjunction with St. Mary’s Catholic Order of Foresters Court 594 will be sponsoring a food truck at St.
Mary’s Church, 1401 North Richmond Road, McHenry,
on Saturday, October 24, starting at 9 AM until all food
is distributed. The truck will provide food for approximately 200 families and will be distributed on a first
come basis. Tickets will be distributed beginning at
8:30 AM with one ticket per household. Please do not
begin forming a line until 8 AM. Participants are asked
to bring their own containers for the food distribution.
Cursillo (pronounced kur-see-yo) is a Spanish word
meaning “little” or “short course.” The Cursillo weekend
begins on Thursday night and ends on Sunday evening.
Candidates attending live and work together listening to
talks given by religious and lay people to gain a deeper
awareness of their faith. The goal of the Cursillo weekend is to form small Christian communities or groups
that meet weekly to help us with being
accountable in our faith lives and to help to
accomplish the mission of the Church. It is
a blend of seriousness, light heartedness,
spiritual exercises, talks and discussions
and is presented in an atmosphere of joy
and song. The whole point of the Cursillo
movement is that ordinary people can
steadily grow in love and service of God
and man for the rest of their lives. Christian growth is
not easy, but the Cursillo weekend provides a framework
for it, both during the three days and afterwards.
