We want to thank them for serving, protecting, being there in our time of need and putting themselves in dangerous situations to keep us safe. This weekend always reminds me that we forget our police, fire and EMT personnel are also mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters. This year is especially poignant, because we lost the lives of Lieutenant Gliniewicz and Deputy Maness. Let's pray for their families whose lives are changed forever. Please stop to thank our officers, fire and EMT personnel. We are also very grateful to be led by Police Chief John Jones, a parishioner, and Fire Chief Tony Heumann, a St. John's parishioner. Today, Sunday, at 11:45 AM we will dedicate a street being named in memory of John Shay, who served the county emergency service and community fire service for many years. We will be at the main fire station on Elm Street. Please join us. Have a Blessed Day! Page 4 Couples, Come to “Spirit of Marriage” "An extraordinary marriage is not one without conflict. It is one where honesty, respect, and forgiveness set the tone for resolution.” Come and join us Wednesday, October 7, for this month's "Spirit of Marriage,” with the topic of “Respect.” It is a free, one hour event where you will have the opportunity to quietly focus on one another instead of all of the daily stresses of life. We begin promptly at 7:30 PM in the Room of Remembrance. The Spirit of Marriage is scheduled on the first Wednesday evening of each month and all married couples are invited. Hope to see you there! Helping Hands Are Needed We are all so busy that we sometimes feel we have no time to participate in any ministries at Holy Apostles, but here we offer the opportunity of a valuable yet not time-consuming ministry: be a “helping hand.” We have many people in the parish who are at various times in need of help. A nice home-cooked meal, a cake or cookies, a ride to church or to the store would be so appreciated by them. Would you be willing to volunteer to help on an as-needed basis for the homebound or for special events at church? Please contact Jeanne Fraser, Pastoral Care office, at 815-385-5673, x 124, or jfraser@ Thechurchofholyapostles.org. HALO News Due to the church being closed on Monday, October 12 in observance of Columbus Day, the Holy Apostles Ladies Organization (HALO) meeting will be moved to Monday, October 19, at 7 PM, St. Francis/St. Augustine. HALO is in need of the plastic Swiffer hand duster handles for an exciting new project. If you have a Swiffer handle you are no loner using, please donate it to HALO and place it in the collection box by the Information Center. Visit HALO’s Bake Sale in November and to see a great way to clean and go green. Thanks! The Church of Holy Apostles, McHenry, IL Holy Apostles Mission Day—October 17 Many of us would love to reach out and be the face of God by serving others in need but are unable to take a mission trip to do so. Mission Day is an opportunity for everyone to serve people in our community just for a day. Set aside Saturday, October 17, to work on a team of parish members to give a hand to someone who needs assistance maintaining their homes. Register online on the parish website or pick up a form in the narthex. Are you or do you know someone in our community (need not be parish members) who needs help at their home with cleaning, yard work/ landscaping, painting, or light electrical, plumbing or construction repairs? Let us add your needs to our “to do” list on Mission Day. (We cannot guarantee that all requests for help will be met.) Contact Joe Filpi at 815385-5673 or [email protected] with your requests for help. Jesus’ Greatest Expression of Love... ...is the Divine Eucharist. Dementia Discussion Group to Meet Those of us who are parents know that we often sacrifice to put our children's needs before our own. But what does a parent do when, despite careful budgeting and sacrificing, there simply isn't any food to put on the dinner table? The St. Vincent de Paul Society delivers food to needy families across the McHenry area to help parents put meals on the table. Food is often the most requested item when our neighbors in need call the SVdPS hotline. Your donations to the poor box allow local parents the dignity and relief to know their children will be fed. Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. Proverbs 22:9 Do you have someone you love who is suffering from some stage of dementia? There are many types of dementia, but it generally involves problems with thinking or memory. The purpose of this meeting will be to talk with one another and share stories about your loved one with dementia. We all can learn from one another. All are welcome: family members, the person with dementia, the caregiver, friends and anyone who wants to know more about this condition. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, October 14, (please note this corrected date), 1 to 2:30 PM, in St. Ambrose room in Apostles Bay. This meeting will be facilitated by Don Gaul, whose wife has dementia. For more information contact Jeanne Fraser at 815-385-5673, ext. 124 or [email protected]. Noah's Ark Preschool is again selling beautiful alloccasion greeting cards as a fundraiser for the school. Look for the display in the Church Narthex the weekend of October 17 and 18. The goal of the Cursillo weekend is to form small Christian communities or groups that meet weekly to help us with being accountable in our faith lives and to help to accomplish the mission of the Church. It is a blend of seriousness, light heartedness, spiritual exercises, talks and discussions and is presented in an atmosphere of joy and song. The whole point of the Cursillo movement is that ordinary people can steadily grow in love and service of God and man for the rest of their lives. Christian growth is not easy, but the Cursillo weekend provides a framework for it, both during the three days and afterwards. Ignite the Fun...Blast into Scouting Cub Scout Pack 351 welcomes boys to another exciting year of activities. Our scouts are taught the importance of service, community, and having fun! Pack 351 was chartered over 45 years ago, sponsored by St. Patrick Catholic Church and draws scouts from St. Patrick’s, St. Mary’s and Holy Apostles. In keeping with “Blast into Scouting” theme, scouts that join will receive a free model rocket to build and launch. Boys in 1st through 5th grade are welcome to join. We are also looking for additional adult volunteers to support the Pack. It’s a great way to support boys from our church communities with your time and talent.
