Page 3 September 7, 2014 PASTOR’S REFLECTION Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 7, 2014 Dear Friends, We should ask ourselves whether our hesitation to judge another person’s actions grows out of genuine humility and acceptance or out of desire simply not to be perceived as “holier than thou.” Few of us relish the role of keeper of public morality. But when we see someone engaged in behavior that is harmful to themselves or others, it is our role to speak out honestly and with love. As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen you with His peace. May the good Lord bless you and your dear family abundantly each day. Please pray for me. In Christ, Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro ASCENDING LIFE INTERNATIONAL Christian movement of senior adults active in church and their community. Our next meeting will be on Friday, September 12 at 9:30 a.m. in Room E. Page 4 September 7, 2014 JUSTICE CORNER Social Sins Today’s readings call us to examine our sins and repent. We can relate in terms of our personal sins, but what about our social sins? Social sins are defined as those for which no one person is responsible. All members of society share a responsibility. Examples include: racism, extreme poverty, economic inequality, structures that permit human rights violations, environmental abuse, war, terrorism, etc. How can you as an individual repent of these sins? Your can repent by promoting justice that breaks down barriers and seeks solutions based on the common good. Many times these solutions have a personal cost. To reduce severe poverty you can choose to purchase fairly traded goods which cost more than those found at bargain stores. You pay more because the workers who produce them earn living wages, unlike many traditionally traded goods sold for less because they are made with slave labor. This week, think about actions you might take personally to repent of social sins. PRAY FOR PEACE IN THE WORLD!!! CATHOLIC PRAYER BREAKFAST The women and men who seek to bring Gospel values into the workplace will hold the next meeting of the CATHOLIC PRAYER BREAKFAST on Tuesday, September 9, to be held at MorningStar Renewal Center, 7275 SW 124 Street (adjacent to St. Louis Parish). Guest speaker is Monsignor Jim Fetscher, formerly of St. Louis Parish and current pastor at St. Sebastian in Broward. Msgr. Fetscher will share how the Lord has called him to service for the People of God. Please join us as we hear a witness from this remarkable witness for Christ. Full breakfast is served. We are in our 24th year! Business and professional networking beginning at 7:15 a.m. Bring your business associates and plenty of business cards! Breakfast at 7:30, with adjournment by 8:30 a.m. Donation is $7.00. Please call Voicemail at UM (24 hours) 305-284-3270 to reserve your space for the Breakfast Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann A MINUTE IN THE CHURCH; ONE MINUTE CATHOLIC APOLOGETICS Apologetics- the branch of theology concerned with the defense and rational justification of Christianity (in our case, Catholicism). Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a reason for your hope. 1 Peter 3:15 The Church and the Bible: Many people who leave the Catholic faith say something like this; “I just never heard the Bible in the Catholic Church.” Or “Mass is just a ritual, they never talk about the Bible.” Perhaps they just weren’t listening. Did you know that if you went to Mass every day for three years you would hear almost the entire Bible? Not every single chapter and verse, but you would hear the whole of the story of salvation. You see, the Catholic is a liturgical church. That means it follows a set cycle of readings from the Bible that correspond to seasons in the Church; like Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent and Easter. Isn’t it awesome to think that, each Sunday, over a billion Catholics throughout the world are all praying about and reflecting on the same Scripture readings? During most liturgical seasons, at every Sunday Mass, you’ll hear a reading from the New Testament, and a reading from one of the Gospels. So if you ever hear someone say that there is no Bible in the Catholic Church, invite them to Mass. They will be surprised…if they have ears to hear. PRAYER FOR PROTECTION AGAINST STORMS God Our Father You set the earth on its foundation. Keep us safe from the danger of hurricanes and storms and let us always feel the presence of Your love. May we be secure in Your protection and serve You with grateful hearts. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen. Oh Mary conceived without sin, Pray for us who have recourse to you. Page 5 September 7, 2014 Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann MSGR.
