World Heritage Site
Por el inestimable legado histórico y cultural que
posee Querétaro, UNESCO ha declarado cuatro
sitios Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad: la
Zona de Monumentos de Santiago de Querétaro,
las Misiones Franciscanas de la Sierra Gorda y
el Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Además, los
Lugares de Memoria y Tradiciones Vivas de los
Otomí-Chichimecas de Tolimán son Patrimonio
Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
Due to Querétaro’s possession of a magnificent
historic and cultural legacy, UNESCO has
declared four World Heritage Sites: the Historic
Monuments Zone of Querétaro, the Franciscan
Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro, and
the Royal Inland Road. Besides, The Places of
Memory and Living Traditions of the OtomíChichimeca People of Tolimán are considered
an Intangible Heritage.

colonial past, its baroque architecture and its
impressive Aqueduct, built during the 18th
century. On 1996, the historical downtown was
added to the list of places considered World
Heritage Sites by UNESCO. To visit it all, there

Misiones Franciscanas
de la Sierra Gorda
The Franciscan Missions
of the Sierra Gorda
Simbolizan la última fase de evangelización
en México. Cada templo representa una
declaración artística elocuente con empleo de
motivos y símbolos franciscanos e indígenas;
cada fachada ostenta un particular barroco
mestizo. Fueron declaradas Patrimonio Cultural
de la Humanidad en 2003 por la UNESCO por
su valor artístico y cultural, puesto que son una
muestra singular y sorprendente del mestizaje
en esta apartada región. La Sierra Gorda es
un lugar paradisíaco para el ecoturismo y la
gastronomía; una combinación de naturaleza,
cultura e historia.
They symbolize the last phase of evangelization
in México. Each temple represents an eloquent
artistic declaration by using both franciscan
and indigenous motifs and symbols; each façade
flaunts a unique representation of Mexican
Baroque. UNESCO declared the ensemble a
World Heritage Site on 2003, due to its artistic
and cultural value, since they are a singular
and amazing sample of the race mixture in this
zone. The Sierra Gorda mountain range is ideal
for practicing ecotourism and trying out the
regional gastronomy; it is a great combination
of nature and culture.
Camino Real de Tierra Adentro
Royal Inland Road
El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, conocido
como el Camino de la Plata o el Camino de
Santa Fe, fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural
de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 2010.
Era la ruta por la que transportaban todas
las mercancías durante el virreinato. Este
camino fue creando riqueza y desarrollo a su
alrededor, hecho que puede percibirse al día
de hoy en las opulentas haciendas de San
Juan del Río.
Literally translated as Royal Inland Road, also
known as the Silver Route or the Santa Fe Road,
UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site on
2010. This was the route through which all the
quality merchandise was transported during
the colonial times. This road created wealth
and development around it; this can still be
perceived and appreciated today through the
opulent estates located in San Juan del Río.

En 2009, esta zona fue declarada por la
UNESCO Patrimonio Inmaterial, debido al
inmenso valor cultural y simbólico que tienen
las costumbres sagradas de los indígenas
otomí-chichimecas conservadas hasta la fecha.
Comprende todos los sitios sagrados de
este pueblo indígena, representados por el
semi-desierto queretano, las capillas oratorio
familiares, las festividades, las rutas de
peregrinaje, la Peña de Bernal y la memoria
indígena en sí. Dado que este patrimonio no
es tangible, su objeto es preservar la cultura y
evitar su desaparición.
On 2009, UNESCO declared this zone an
Intangible Heritage Site, due to its immeasurable
cultural and symbolic value, given to it by the
sacred traditions preserved until today by the
otomí-chichimecas. It includes all the sacred sites
and rituals of this indigenous civilization, which
are mainly represented by Querétaro’s semidesert, the Otomí family chapels, the festivities,
the pilgrimage routes, Bernal’s monolith and the
indigenous memory itself, among others. Since
this heritage is not tangible, its purpose is to
preserve culture and avoid its disappearance.

Teatro Metropolitano
Metropolitan Theater
El Teatro Metropolitano, en el Querétaro Centro
de Congresos es una magnífica opción para
presentar conferencias plenarias así como
eventos protocolarios y culturales. Al elegir este
recinto, el evento se verá beneficiado a través
de alguno de sus tres grandes proyectos: la Sala
Principal, equipada con tecnología de punta, está
dividida en cuatro niveles y acondicionada para
recibir 1,335 espectadores; el Teatro Experimental,

vista panorámica de la ciudad de Querétaro,

MUSEO DE ARTE
ART MUSEUM
Antiguo monasterio de la Orden de San
Agustín, construido entre 1731 y 1743. Funcionó
como cuartel militar, hospital, palacio federal
y oficina de correos, hasta que finalmente fue
restaurado e inaugurado como museo en 1988.
Es considerado uno de los claustros barrocos
más hermosos de América.
Former monastery of the Order of St. Augustine,
it was built between 1731 and 1743. It was used as
military headquarters, hospital, federal palace,
and post office, until finally it was restored and
opened as a museum on 1988. It is considered
one of the most beautiful Baroque cloisters in
America.

TEATRO DE LA REPÚBLICA
REPUBLIC THEATER
Se inauguró el 2 de mayo de 1852, con el
nombre de Teatro Iturbide. Este recinto de
estilo neoclásico ha sido anfitrión de hechos
que marcaron el destino del país: en 1854 se
interpretó por primera vez el Himno Nacional;
en 1867 se sentenció a muerte a Maximiliano
de Habsburgo, y el 5 de febrero de 1917 se
promulgó la Constitución Política de los
Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
It opened its doors on May 2nd, 1852, under
the name of Teatro Iturbide. This neoclassical
precinct has hosted events that have marked
the country’s history: on 1854, the National
Anthem was performed for the first time; on
1867, Maximilian of Habsburg was sentenced
to death, and in February 5th, 1917, the current
Constitution of México was promulgated.

Está ubicado a un costado de la iglesia de San Felipe Neri, donde Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla ofició
la primera misa en el año 1805. En la actualidad alberga al Ministerio de Desarrollo Urbano y Obras
Públicas, conocido como «Palacio Conín», en memoria del fundador de la ciudad.

mass. It now houses the Ministry of Urban Development, known as «Palacio de Conín», in memory of
the city’s founder.

Fue construido a finales del siglo XVIII bajo un estilo neoclásico. Fue Palacio de Gobierno y en 1916
fue nombrado Palacio Nacional por Venustiano Carranza. A partir de 1986 fue nombrado Archivo
Histórico y al día de hoy guarda la información oficial del Estado.
It was built based on a neoclassical style in the late 18th century. It was Government Palace
and, in 1916 it was declared National Palace by Venustiano Carranza. Since 1986 was appointed
Historical Archive and keeps all the State’s official information.

MUSEO REGIONAL DE QUERÉTARO
REGIONAL MUSEUM OF QUERÉTARO
El templo y ex monasterio de San Francisco fue el primer edificio religioso que se construyó
en Querétaro. Data de 1540 y funcionó como catedral entre 1865 y 1911. El Museo Regional que
ahora alberga está dedicado a ilustrar la historia de Querétaro y de México. Cuenta con un patio
principal, un auditorio y algunas salas de exhibiciones.
The San Francisco church and former monastery was the first religious building ever built in Querétaro.
It dates back to 1540 and it was used as a cathedral between 1865 and 1911. It now shelters the Regional
Museum, which is dedicated to illustrate the history of Querétaro and México. It has a main courtyard,
an auditorium and some exhibition halls.

El Centro Histórico de Santiago de Querétaro, Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad desde 1996, es

Santiago de Querétaro Historic Downtown, World Heritage Site since 1996, is one of the most beautiful
and best-preserved historical downtowns in the whole country. The temples and mansions are true
architectural jewels that can be visited, or you can choose other alternatives for cultural tourism such
as galleries, museums or theaters.

RECORRIDOS HISTÓRICOS
Querétaro ofrece recorridos turísticos de
acuerdo a las necesidades y el tiempo de los
viajeros. Se puede conocer el Centro Histórico
en tranvía o en un recorrido peatonal, visitar
los museos o las tiendas de artesanías. Es
posible hacer un recorrido de leyendas por
las casonas más antiguas del centro o visitar
uno a uno los templos. Además, existe una
variedad de tours más largos, con el fin de
descubrir todos los rincones del estado.
HISTORICAL TOURS
Querétaro offers tours according to the needs
and time possibilities of each traveler, either on
a route through the historical downtown on a
trolley car or a walking tour. You can choose
visiting all the museums or just the handicrafts
stores. It is possible to take a tour of legends
through the ancient mansions downtown, or to
visit one by one all the temples. Besides, there
are longer tours that allow you to discover every
corner of the state.

PUEBLOS MÁGICOS
MAGIC TOWNS
Querétaro cuenta con cuatro Pueblos Mágicos
reconocidos: Bernal, hogar de La Peña, el
tercer monolito más grande del mundo, y
de las deliciosas gorditas de maíz quebrado.
Cadereyta, con dos viveros de cactáceas y
su hermosa plaza principal. Jalpan, centro de
la Sierra Gorda y encabezado por la Misión
Franciscana de Jalpan. Y Tequisquiapan, un
pintoresco pueblo en donde se puede volar en
globo aerostático, visitar las minas de ópalos y
el Museo del Queso y el Vino.
Querétaro has four recognized Magic Towns:
Bernal, it is home of the third tallest monolith
in the world and its famous corn gorditas.
Cadereyta has two important botanical gardens
and a beautiful main square. Jalpan, which
is the commercial center of the Sierra Gorda
mountain range, welcomes the tourist with the
impressive façade of a Franciscan Mission. And
Tequisquiapan, a picturesque town to take hot
air balloon rides and visit the opal mines and the
Wine and Cheese Museum.
CAMPAMENTOS ECOTURÍSTICOS
ECO-CAMPS
Los campamentos ecoturísticos de Querétaro,
la mayoría en la Sierra Gorda, son una
excelente opción para la aventura y los
deportes extremos, así como para el descanso
y la convivencia. San Pedro Huimilpan, ideal
para las actividades al aire libre; La Isla, es
perfecto para practicar la pesca deportiva;
Aventura Park, para sentir la adrenalina; El
Jabalí, donde se experimenta una llegada muy
emocionante a bordo de una cuatrimoto, y Río
Escanela, un paraíso para el senderismo y el
descanso extremo.
Querétaro’s eco-camps, most of them located
in the Sierra Gorda mountain range, are an
excellent option for adventure and extreme
sports, as well as for R&R. San Pedro Huimilpan
is ideal for outdoors activities; La Isla is perfect
for practicing sportive fishing; Aventura Park,
great to feel the adrenaline; El Jabalí, where a
very exciting arrival is experienced on board
of an ATV, and Río Escanela, a paradise for
hiking and extreme rest.

MISIONES FRANCISCANAS
FRANCISCAN MISSIONS
Las Misiones Franciscanas son consideradas,
desde 2003, Patrimonio Cultural de la
Humanidad. El conjunto de cinco templos,
Jalpan, Concá, Tilaco, Tancoyol y Landa,
colocados en lugares estratégicos de la
Sierra Gorda, muestran a través de su belleza
artística excepcional, el sincretismo que se
dio entre españoles e indígenas. Las fachadas,
todas diferentes, expresan símbolos de ambas
culturas. No existe en todo el país, un grupo
arquitectónico igual.
The Franciscan Missions are considered, since
2003, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The
group of five temples, Jalpan, Concá, Tilaco,
Tancoyol and Landa, located at strategic
spots in the Sierra Gorda mountain range,
shows, through its exceptional artistic beauty,
the syncretism that took place between the
Indigenous and the Spaniards; the façades
express diverse symbols from both cultures.
There is not another architectural group such as
this in the whole country.
The state also has 7 golf courses, 12 country
clubs, 2 polo fields, and a nautical club for
water skiing.

GASTRONOMÍA
La cocina queretana armoniza los ingredientes
de esta tierra, con utensilios y técnicas,
combinándolos exquisitamente con la herencia
que dejaron los españoles. Se recomienda
degustar la tradicional barbacoa de Cadereyta
de Montes, las gorditas de maíz de Colón, las
charamuscas de El Marqués, y las tradicionales
enchiladas queretanas de Santiago de
Querétaro. Para un recuerdo sin igual, se
organizan eventos hechos a la medida, con
temáticas relacionadas con el estado, por
ejemplo cenas conventuales, mexicanas o una
degustación de quesos y vinos queretanos.
ZONAS ARQUEOLÓGICAS
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
Existen cuatro zonas arqueológicas en
Querétaro: El Cerrito, en Corregidora; Ranas,
en San Joaquín; Toluquilla, en Cadereyta y
Tancama, en Jalpan de Serra. Cada sitio es
único en su construcción, aunque todos
muestran la riqueza que vivieron los pueblos
chichimecas y otomíes mucho antes de la
llegada de los españoles. Al visitarlos, todavía
se pueden apreciar los juegos de pelota y
centros ceremoniales con sus altares, las
estructuras de las plazas y las escalinatas.

La Sierra Gorda queretana es, a simple vista,

la cual fue nombrada Reserva de la Biósfera.
Al recorrerla, uno puede percibir cómo
va cambiando el paisaje, y por lo tanto, el
ecosistema. Es un gran lugar para practicar
el turismo alternativo. Al igual que es una
región rica en naturaleza, también lo es
en cultura: resguarda las cinco Misiones
Franciscanas, testigos inamovibles de la
fusión cultural entre españoles e indígenas
en el siglo XVIII, dando lugar a una forma
única del barroco mestizo.
Querétaro’s Sierra Gorda mountain range is,
at first sight, the most heterogeneous zone in
the country. For this reason, it is recognized as
a Biosphere Reserve. While traveling through
it, you can perceive how the landscape changes
constantly and therefore, the ecosystems. It is
