Page Two Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 18, 2013 THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP EL COSTO DE SER DISCÍPULO Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. Faith is a supernatural gift. When we are open to receive it, it lights our path as we journey through time as we will learn in the next few paragraphs. 8. Faith opens the way before us and accompanies our steps through time. Hence, if we want to understand what faith is, we need to follow the route it has taken, the path trodden by believers, as witnessed first in the Old Testament. Here a unique place belongs to Abraham, our father in faith. Something disturbing takes place in his life: God speaks to him; he reveals himself as a God who speaks and calls his name. Faith is linked to hearing. Abraham does not see God, but hears his voice. Faith thus takes on a personal aspect. God is not the god of a particular place, or a deity linked to specific sacred time, but the God of a person, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, capable of interacting with man and establishing a covenant with him. Faith is our response to a word which engages us personally, to a "Thou" who calls us by name. 9. The word spoken to Abraham contains both a call and a promise. First, it is a call to leave his own land, a summons to a new life, the beginning of an exodus which points him towards an unforeseen future. The sight which faith would give to Abraham would always be linked to the need to take this step forward: faith "sees" to the extent that it journeys, to the extent that it chooses to enter into the horizons opened up by God’s word. This word also contains a promise: Your descendants will be great in number, you will be the father of a great nation (cf. Gen 13:16; 15:5; 22:17). As a response to a word which preceded it, Abraham’s faith would always be an act of remembrance. Yet this remembrance is not fixed on past events but, as the memory of a promise, it becomes capable of opening up the future, shedding light on the path to be taken. We see how faith, as remembrance of the future, memoria futuri, is thus closely bound up with hope. As we can see from the above paragraphs in order for us to understand faith we need to live it as Abraham, our father in faith lived it. Abraham did not have to see God in order to believe in him. Abraham could only hear his word, trust in the saying and follow it. He followed the unknown, hoping to obtain a new and peaceful future. For us Christians, it is eternal communion with God. It is from God’s love for all men that the Church in every age receives both the obligation and the vigor of her missionary dynamism, ‘for the love of Christ urges us on.’ Indeed, God ‘desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth’; that is, God wills the salvation of everyone through the knowledge of the truth. Salvation is found in the truth. Those who obey the prompting of the Spirit of truth are already on the way of salvation. But the Church, to whom this truth has been entrusted, must go out to meet their desire, so as to bring them the truth. Because she believes in God’s universal plan of salvation, the Church must be missionary.” (CCC, n. 851) Página cinco IN SERVICE Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ST LAWRENCE CONFERENCE ST. If you have not pledged, please do so now! We have exceeded the $1,000,000 mark! It is very exciting to see that we are approaching our goal of $1,350,000! Now it is time to gather the remainder of our goal—$340,000. Be a part of our history by participating in the capital campaign if you have not done so. Pledge cards are available after each Mass or you can simply call the Parish Office. Staff will be happy to assist you. Let us all focus on the renovation of our sacred place of worship by praying for success in reaching our goal of $1,350,000, making your sacrificial pledge, and encouraging others to join our community effort. May the Lord be our guide as we continue "A Journey Together in Building Our Faith."
