National Chair
Welcome to the latest edition
of your Pipeline Newsletter
As Chairman of the Guild, I am in close communication with my
successors, John Ineson (1st Deputy) and Matt Rowlatt (2nd Deputy)
in reviewing how we can further improve the running of the Guild
to improve member benefits. I am also aware that my year as the
Chairman will pass quickly. Together we are developing a three year
succession plan to refine and develop good practices that have been
initiated and implemented more recently by previous Chairmen of
the Guild, namely Steve Loggie, Tam Bream, Richard Price and
Norman Howell.
I will be working closely
with Cheryl Burgess,
the Director General of
the Guild, to ensure the
Guild HQ can support
all of our branches and
panels in their yearly
events. Any member
wishing to participate,
sponsor or present
at any event should
make contact with the
HQ Team or the event
organiser, likewise
for any prospective
members.
This year we are
looking to promote and
encourage you, “our
members”, to present
Our new wall calendar
your news, successes,
advice and any other important information that you feel you would
like to share with your fellow Guild members.
The newsletters are produced for
your information and with your
feedback we can make them more
informative for all. The articles in this
edition should give you an insight
into the various views currently
surrounding the development of
Shale Gas within the UK.
I hope that all members have had a
chance to log in to the website and
update their profile in advance of
the publication of this year’s Guild
Directory. Publication is underway and should be dispatched in the
beginning of September.
As part of our overview of the events planned for the year ahead, we
have produced a draft wall calendar that will be available shortly for
download via our website www.pipeguild.com
I intend to be present at all of the branch annual dinners, the first of
which is the 21st South East Branch Annual dinner on Friday 27th
September at the Runnymede Hotel as a guest of the Chairman
Anton Gazzard. This is closely followed by the 38th Scottish Branch
Dinner on Friday 4th October at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow as a
guest of the Chairman Bill Sykes.
Notifications of all events are emailed in advance, so I would suggest
that you keep a look out for any events in your region and let us know
if you would like to attend, sponsor or support any of our upcoming
events.
I look forward to updating you with my progress throughout the year
and keep you informed of Guild matters.
Murphy acquires elements of Land & Marine
J. Murphy & Sons Ltd has acquired key elements of the Land & Marine business, including the trading
name, plant assets and a number of existing contracts, after it went into administration in May.
Land & Marine’s capabilities in the energy, process engineering, petrochemical, marine and aviation sectors complement Murphy’s
capabilities in the wider infrastructure sector.
Murphy says the acquisition is in line with their strategy to expand its business into adjacent and related markets and is an exciting
development for both organisations.

Northern Irish branch reviews two
exciting projects in annual site visit
The Northern Irish Branch held its annual site visit in Newcastle, Co. Down on 8th May.
The two sites chosen for review were a hydro scheme under construction for the South
Eastern Education and Library Board at All Children’s Integrated Primary School, and
the Newcastle Wastewater Treatment Project which is an upgrade of the Waste Water
Treatment Work.
SEELB Hydro Scheme
This scheme is headed by Farrans Construction’s renewable team and
supported by Newmills Engineering, Braham Electrical, Ryan Rogan Contracts
and Seamic Engineering.
Funded by £500,000 from the Department of Finance and Personnel, it enables
up to nine local schools to receive free power, via the 1.1kms pipeline and
110kV turbine, converting surplus energy in the environment into electricity.
All Children’s Integrated Primary School will not only benefit from the free power
supply, but also from revenue generated by selling excess supply back to the
grid and reduced carbon reduction commitment payments.
The site visit included a presentation from a member of the Farrans renewable
team who explained how the scheme was agreed upon, the various
different government bodies involved, planning permissions required due
to the extensive work required within Tullymore Forest Park and the public
consultations required.
Guild members were then shown around the compartment housing the turbine,
located under the school’s staff car park.
Newcastle Wastewater
Treatment Project
This scheme was developed to ensure the
quality of bathing waters in the popular seaside
town meets new EU directives set by the Northern
Ireland Environment Agency. It forms part of a £6
million investment from Northern Ireland Water to
improve infrastructure and networks, making sure
the sewerage infrastructure in Newcastle is
fully compliant.
The site visit included a presentation from members
of the joint venture between Dawson-Wam and
Ovivo, who explained how the original treatment
works operated and the various changes in
technology that made the upgrade possible.
Guild members then took a tour of the existing
treatment works, still in operation, and the extension
showing how the new technology is being
implemented.

programme. This collaboration will promote knowledge sharing
and assist in event programming, helping to avoid potential event
clashes and increase exposure for both parties.
With a diverse range of skills and expertise represented, there
is significant opportunity for the YPN to engage not only the
immediate industry professionals, but also communities and
other organisations, thereby helping raise the Guild’s profile.
The initiative involves having a Guild YPN member sit on the
IGEM YPN board, and vice versa, but with a strong focus on
allowing each committee to operate in their own independent
capacity. If successful, the exchange programme will happen
once a year with each group nominating a person to sit on the
opposite organisation’s committee.
Under the leadership of James Clarke, the Midlands Guild
YPN has its sights set high.
One of the latest initiatives involves the partial integration of
the Guild and IGEM YPN committees through an exchange

Jo Parker proves hot competition in European triathlon
Midlands Branch Chair, Jo Parker, competed in 28 degree heat in
Turkey to finish 15th in her age group in the Age Group European
Triathlon Championships in June.
While most were jetting off on holiday, Jo ventured into the world of
international sport, with the aims of “finishing without making a fool of
myself, and without coming last!”
Jo can certainly feel proud of herself that she achieved that and more,
finishing in the top 20 although she was one of the oldest in her age
category.
Jo said: “The hardest thing was
competing in the 28 degree
heat, especially in the run which
involved a steep rise on each of
the two laps. They definitely felt
steeper in the second lap.
“The sea swim was mercifully
calm and a wonderful feature
was the shower gantry
competitors ran under on their
way into transition so that all the salt could be washed off.
The British triathlon team dwarved all the other European teams with
around 500 people competing in both the sprint distance and standard
or olympic distance events.
“Doing the bike circuit on closed roads was great – and I was really
pleased to gain a personal best on that leg.”
The gruelling competition had a huge profile across the city with
photographs of last year’s elite event on advertising bill boards. The race
took place on closed roads with a huge pontoon built out into the sea.
Jo now hopes to compete at Kitzbuel in Austria next year where she
believes a podium place could be in sight as she moves up into the next
age group category.

International News
Berlin water industry exhibition reports
highest international support in 2013
The 3-day water-industry
focussed Wasser Berlin
International Exhibition, held
in April, saw a marked rise in
international exhibitor and trade
visitor numbers this year.
Overall, 651 exhibitors, including 194 from
35 different countries, showcased their latest
technologies, products and services on the
subject of water supply and wastewater
disposal and more than 31,000 visitors
representing business, politics and science
took part, an increase of 10 per cent.
Occupying six display halls, Wasser Berlin
International demonstrated its wide-ranging
expertise to those present on water industry
topics.
Attendance by International figures was
also prominent at the opening event.
Those attending included Dirk Niebel, the
Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation
and Development, Dr. Abdul Qawi Khalifa,
the Egyptian Minister of Utilities, Drinking
Water and Sewage, and Melanie Schultz
van Haegen-Maas Geesteranus, the
Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the
Environment.
Dr. Christian Göke, COO Berlin GmbH
said: “Water represents a global market
and requires a global approach. Water
industry companies are doing more and
more business on the international market
and Wasser Berlin International has taken
these developments on board. That
was underlined at this year’s event and
we witnessed a substantial increase in
international exhibitors and trade visitors.
“High-profile politicians from all parts of
the world were here and 43 international
delegations from important growth markets
such as Eastern Europe, Asia and the
Arab world came to find out more from the
exhibitors at the event. The presence of our
partner ACWUA, which represents 17 Arab
countries, gave the fair’s international appeal
a significant boost.”
Guild member, Radius Systems, attended
the event to showcase their latest
technologies and products for both water
supply and wastewater disposal.
Radius Systems’ International Customer
Services Supervisor, Inga Walker, said:
“Radius Systems received tremendous
interest in our innovative barrier pipe system
technology, Puriton™, a solution developed
to safely convey potable water through
contaminated ground. There was further
interest in CleanPipe™ Factory Sealed Coils,
a potable water pipe solution which ensures
that the pipe bore is contamination free,
from the point of manufacture to installation,
removing the need for pre-chlorination.
“Wasser Berlin International was a great
platform for us to launch the extended
Puriton pipe system range and has been
a very successful event. We’ve been very
busy over the duration of the exhibition and
have had a great number of visitor enquiries
for our products. Personally, it’s also been a
great opportunity to meet our POLYPLASTIC
Group colleagues and learn more about our
respective product range.”
The next Wasser Berlin International event
will be in 2015, from 24th to 27th March.

Politics and pipelines
International politics have had a big impact
on the pipeline industry, particularly where
pipelines cross borders.
Here, Roberto Pirani, Managing Director of
Pipeline Systems Engineering Ltd, gives us
an insight into the role of transit countries
from his own experiences overseas.
“During the 90s revolutionary period in
Mozambique, I was involved in the upgrading
of the multi-product pipeline from Beira on the
Mozambique coast, to Feruka in Zimbabwe.
“By agreement between the two
governments, the ‘Beira Corridor’ was under
the control of the Zimbabwe army and an
army camp was established outside of the
intermediate pump station at Maforga. Any
travel along the pipeline route was escorted by
the army. Mozambique was what is known
as a transit country, strategic to the supply of
refined oil products to Zimbabwe.
06
“Other major political events I witnessed
included the Islamic Revolution and Iran - Iraq
war, the November 2003 ‘Rose Revolution’
in Georgia, and the Georgia - Russia war in
2008, which could have led to attacks on the
Caspian export pipelines crossing Georgia.
“Georgia is a key transit country for Caspian
oil and gas exports towards Europe and this
could have been considered by Russia as
a challenge to their interests. Although the
Russian air force dominated the skies, they
never threatened the pipelines’ pumping
stations, which would have been easy targets.
“The great importance of transit countries
was also evident during the 2009 European
gas crisis, caused by a price dispute
between Russia and Ukraine. This led to
Russia seeking diversified export routes by
building the Nord Stream Pipeline from the
Russian Baltic to Germany, followed by the
development of the South Stream Pipeline
from Russia to Bulgaria across the Black Sea.

Fig 1. The EU
Southern Corridor
“The European Union has also looked for
diversification of sources and routes through
the Southern Corridor (see Fig 1) which will
bring Caspian and Eastern Mediterranean
gas to Europe across Turkey (TANAP), the
Black Sea (White Stream) and the Eastern
Mediterranean (Trans-Med pipelines).
The White Stream Pipeline will provide the
required route diversification by delivering
gas from the Eastern to the Western coast
of the Black Sea via a 1,000 km, ultra-deep
underwater pipeline.

UK Shale Gas Summit
Last week, the Chancellor pledged to introduce ‘the world’s most
generous tax regime for shale gas’
The UK chancellor proposes to cut the tax on shale production to 30 per cent compared with
the 62 per cent paid by most of the oil and gas industry in a move that will be warmly greeted by
operators.
Mr Osborne said: “Shale gas is a resource with huge potential to broaden the UK’s energy mix,
create thousands of jobs and keep energy bills low.
“We want to create the right conditions for industry to explore and unlock that potential in a way
that allows communities to share in the benefits.”
The latter refers to the recent announcement by the Treasury that energy companies must
provide at least £100,000 of community benefits for each well drilled by the industry.
The proposed new tax regime follows on the heels of the government announcement that it is
going to improve the planning and permitting process for shale and ensure that the regulatory
regime is well co-ordinated by the new Office of Unconventional Gas and Oil at the Department
of Energy and Climate Change.
Against this backdrop, The Pipeline Industries Guild is partnering with City & Financial’s timely UK
Shale Gas Summit, to be held in London on Wednesday, 9th October 2013.
The event will take a hard look at how the government, shale operators and local communities
can work together to develop a commercially viable and sustainable UK shale industry.
An expert speaker panel will address the key issues through round table panel discussions
and presentations. The programme is divided into five sections:
1. Shale in the context of the Government’s energy policies
2. Potential scale and economics of the UK shale industry
3.Taking advantage of the opportunity – technological and practical considerations
4. Winning the argument I – environmental and safety concerns

Guild support for Gas 2013 - Tackling the Energy Trilemma
The Pipeline Industries Guild is delighted to announce that we will be supporting
the Energy & Utilities Alliance’s Gas 2013 event alongside Guild members and
event sponsors Balfour Beatty.
Now in its 8th year, it provides an ideal
networking opportunity and an excellent
forum for continued learning, with a chance
to visit a topical supply chain exhibition.
With safety always at its centre, this year’s
conference will focus around the axes of
the energy trilemma, discussing the health
and forward prospects for the onshore gas
industry, guided by presentations and views
from experts in the field.
EUA said: “It is not known precisely when the
phrase ‘energy trilemma’ first entered popular
use. However, Dr Paul Golby, then CEO of
E.ON UK, was certainly at the forefront of
promulgating its use in describing the often
conflicting challenges of energy security,
affordability and environmental impact.
“It is fair to say that within UK energy policy
development in the last five years, the
natural gas industry has been seen as an
unsustainable network asset, a bridge to
the renewable future and, through the shale
gas debate, the saviour of our future energy
security challenges.
“This event is designed to look at where the
industry stands as we head towards 2014,
and what this means for investors, networks,
supply chain companies and services
organisations that are integral to the success
of the industry”.
The event takes place at the prestigious One
Great George Street conference centre in the
heart of Westminster on Wednesday, 13th
November.

3M launch liner to bring ageing water pipes up to grade
Changes in European legislation altering
drinking water quality regulations have led to
the need for a new pipe solution.
Properties supplied with water through lead
pipes in the final approach to the dwelling,
typically built prior to 1970, and ageing pipes
in general are at risk of leaching lead into
drinking water.
Regulations currently state that lead levels
must not exceed 25ug/litre¹, but European
legislation commencing in 2013 requires that
the maximum level in drinking water must be
less than 10ug/litre.
Traditionally, phosphate dosing has been
the preferred method of reducing lead
concentrations but as this solution causes
problems at treatment works and is
increasingly costly due to the finite nature of
phosphorus, it has fallen out of favour.
With the replacement of lead pipes being an
expensive and disruptive process, 3M was
tasked with delivering a solution.
Scotchkote Rapid Setting Polymeric
Lining 166L has been developed by 3M in
collaboration with HTC Ltd and Yorkshire
Water, to offer an alternative to costly
excavation works and pipe replacement.
Designed for the rehabilitation of small
diameter pipes made from lead as well as
galvanised steel or copper, Scotchkote Rapid
Setting Polymeric Lining 166L is approved
for use in drinking water pipes and offers a
four-hour return to service and a projected
in-service life of 50 years.
Applied using the patented Serline air vortex
system, Scotchkote Rapid Setting Lining
Polymeric 166L helps mitigate against
lead content in drinking water and assists
utility companies in meeting European lead
legislation.
Paul Woolvine of the Infrastructure Protection
Products division of 3M explained:
08
The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild
|
August 2013 |
“Rehabilitating service pipes with an in-situ
coating such as Scotchkote Rapid Setting
Polymeric Lining 166L can help to minimise
the cost and time associated with pipe
replacement.
“As well as negating the need for timeconsuming excavation which causes
disruption to traffic as well as water supply
to homes, the product allows more pipes to
be treated – up to 20 per day compared to
15 pipe replacements per week – offering a
further benefit to customers.
“As well as reducing the migration levels
of lead from the pipe to drinking water, the
product enhances the integrity of the pipe
by spanning small cracks and holes as well
as being flexible enough to cope with future
movement or shifting of the pipe, helping to
prevent leakage.”

Bluewater Bio wins prestigious Framework contract with Anglian Water
Bluewater Bio International, a leading provider of
high-performance water and wastewater treatment
technologies, has been awarded an initial 3-year
contract with Anglian Water to support their Tertiary
Solids Removal Framework.
In line with the National Environment Programme to improve
environment and water quality, increasingly demanding consent
limits are being set for discharging treated wastewater into water
bodies.
Water companies are incentivised to deliver the most sustainable
treatment solutions and, in order to achieve the required
Biological Oxygen Demand standards with acceptable CAPEX
and OPEX, Anglian Water, through the @one Alliance, are actively
evaluating innovative technologies.
Anglian Water were impressed with the FilterClear system after
Bluewater Bio operated a demonstration plant for four months
at Cambridge Sewage Treatment Works. Operational and water
quality data was collected to demonstrate the effectiveness of
the technology and the results mean it has now been considered
as a potential alternative to MBR or conventional sand filters
where stringent solids performance is required.
Bluewater Bio’s innovative multimedia filtration technology,
FilterClear, has been selected as it meets the stringent standards
set, and provides a cost-effective solution that satisfies Ofwat’s
rigorous approach to price limits. Its selection as a tertiary
solution follows pilot demonstrations of competing technologies,
with effluent quality and operational parameters closely
monitored and compared.
The contract has been awarded for three years, with an option to
extend for another seven years.
Daniel Ishag, Founder & CEO of Bluewater Bio International
commented: “This award, with one of the UK’s largest utility
companies, renowned for its robust R&D focus, represents our
first framework deal in the UK.
“To be selected after undergoing such vigorous testing and
validation at their Cambridge facility is further testament to the
value proposition that we hope to replicate with many other
water companies around the world.
“With stricter discharge consents coming into force, BwB is well
placed to capture a significant proportion of Anglian’s tertiary
filtration upgrades as a result of both the positive trial and the
framework itself. I look forward to working with the Anglian team
and their delivery partners to meet these consents.”
Bluewater Bio acquired Glasgow-based FilterClear’s innovative
suite of high performance filtration technologies in September
2011, attracted by its class-leading throughput rate and solids
retention, high dirt holding capacity and low volume of backwash
waste.
In addition, the small footprint, minimum civil works, quick on-site
installation and minimal operational intervention gives the end
user a lower whole life cost over the life of an asset.

GPS digs in to help mining museum
GPS has piped in to help a local mining
museum with re-development plans, so they
can increase exhibits that bring Britain’s mining
history to life.
Rocks by Rail, a living ironstone museum
in Rutland, allows visitors to experience the
industrial landscape of the once flourishing
East Midlands ironstone quarry and learn of its
heritage.
Their 19-acre site incorporates reclaimed
ironstone quarry, nature trails and railway
tracks, where people can find out about the
mining industry in the area and see some of
the rolling stock and equipment it used.
With ambitious plans to rebuild the locomotive
yard, water tower and servicing facilities at
the museum, as well as commencing a major
track replacement programme in the yard
throat which will lead to a new three road
museum and workshop building, the museum
approached GPS PE Pipe Systems for help
with drainage issues.
11
Simon Layfield, the museum’s secretary, said:
“We approached GPS because they are local
to the museum and had historic connections
with the ironstone mining industry in the
region and we were delighted when they
not only agreed to help but also contributed
their expertise to help us specify the most
appropriate PE pipe.”
and, as it celebrates a history that is so
connected with our own past, we were
especially pleased to be of help.”
The recommended plastic pipe, usually

Illuminating the way in suction excavation
A new, manoeuvrable suction excavator
has received glowing reports from
Brenchley Civil Engineering after they
became the first company in the UK
to employ the new TT-UK City Sucker,
improving safe working on their street
lighting contract for Southern Electric.
Having previously discovered the safety
benefits of suction excavation when working
around live electricity cables, significantly
reducing cable strikes, Brenchley found the
larger suction excavators available to them
were unable to access certain work locations.
Their search for a smaller unit capable of
accessing restricted areas within towns
and housing estates culminated in a
demonstration by TT-UK, in Portsmouth, of
their 7.5 ton City Sucker.
Mounted on a two meter wide Mitsubishi
Fusso chassis, the City Sucker
incorporates a single hydraulically driven
high performance fan with a maximum
capacity of 11,300m3/h. The hydraulically
driven on-board compressor delivers
2.2 m3/min at 7 bar, enabling automatic
cleaning of the fine filters and operation
of pneumatic tools. The power assisted
suction hose has a maximum reach of
3.55m with the option to extend and
rotates 180o. Holding capacity of the
material container is 1.1 m3. Waste
material can be discharged directly in to
dumpy bags or skips, or the unit itself can
be taken off site.
Brenchley said: “We had been using a
number of larger suction excavators for
over two years in Hampshire and West
Sussex on
our Southern
Electric street
light replacement
contract, where
digging down on
live cables is a
highly dangerous
task, but
their size was
restrictive and
we had to revert
back to digging
in some areas.
“As soon as we heard of TT-UK’s smaller
unit, a demonstration of the City Sucker
was arranged on site in Portsmouth and all
attending quickly appreciated its benefits
and efficiency, which surpassed anything
previously seen.
“The 7.5t City Sucker offers utility companies
and contractors additional opportunities
to use suction excavation at job sites not
previously accessible, increasing health &
safety, keeping job sites clean and increasing
job productivity.”
Increases in land values impact pipeline project costs
Sharp increases in easement
payments to landowners for
access to farmland will impact
pipeline project costs across
the UK.
As the process of excavation, storage and
reinstatement can reduce the productivity of
agricultural land, often further compounded
by requirements to revisit land for the purpose
of survey and repair, it is understandable that
landowners expect some compensation for
the disruption and potential loss of earnings.
Here, Nigel Billingsley, Partner
and Head of the Compensation
Faculty of Bruton Knowles
Chartered Surveyors reports on
the phenomenon.
Land and rights are therefore acquired using
a legal agreement known as an easement,
which gives rights to install and keep the
apparatus in place whilst the land remains in
the ownership and use of the farm business.
A large proportion of projects across the
country require access to farmland. The use of
land can be split between land for actual works
which is subject to evacuation or loading with
spoil, and land for access to the works.
As part of the easement agreement an
easement payment is made to the landowner,
the calculation of which is dependent upon the
value of the land prior to the commencement
of works.

Historically, agricultural land values have
remained relatively constant. However, the last
few years have seen agricultural land prices
increasing significantly.
A recent rural land marketing survey by the
RICS/RAC relating to the second half of
2012 confirms the sentiments of the Bruton
Knowles compensation team.
Although there are regional variations, the
headline figures for the weighted average price
of farmland in England and Wales has almost
doubled since 2007.
This increase will have a direct impact on the
cost of pipeline projects moving forward as
landowners seek to receive higher levels of
compensation to reflect the higher values of
agricultural land affected by industry schemes.

Partnership ploughs through technical
challenges on £160m aqueduct re-lining project
United Utilities and project partner Balfour Beatty are undertaking an 11
year, £160 million project to re-line 211km of the Vyrnwy Aqueduct, set
for completion in 2020.
This constitutes one of the largest re-lining projects in the partnership’s
history and will remove the risk of supplying discoloured water to
customers caused by the long term deposition of iron and manganese
within the Aqueduct.
But it has not been without its challenges since work commenced in
2009 including the project team completing a record-breaking insertion
of 863m of liner pipe.
They have had to ensure the integrity of the adjacent live mains during
the re-lining operation, anchoring insertion forces of up to 100 tonnes,
and develop specific end restraint fittings to reconnect the re-lined
main whilst finding ways of minimising disruption to non-United Utilities
customers through Oswestry town centre.
The Vyrnwy Aqueduct consists of three 36
inch diameter mains - one bitumen coated
steel, and two unlined cast iron. The first
Vyrnwy Large
line was laid in 1890 and the third steel
Diameter Trunk Main
main during the 1940s. The mains are laid
parallel at 3m centres from Oswestry Water
Treatment Works to Prescott Reservoir in Liverpool.
The project involves the insertion of a 1030mm outside diameter PE100
SDR 51 liner pipe into the host main utilising the refined die drawing
technique that was developed for large diameter mains by North West
Water in the 1990s. The liner, formed from 100m pipe strings, is pulled
into the host main under tension through a die to reduce its diameter.
When the tension is released the pipe attempts to revert to its original
diameter and forms an intimate fit with the host.
The project team said they have achieved their objectives through
careful planning of engineering solutions, and an emphasis on excellent
communications with those impacted by the work.
PE Pipe supports Wessex Water’s ambitious supply grid programme
Pipe manufacturer GPS PE Pipe Systems
have begun work in earnest on projects for
Wessex Water’s eight-year rolling water supply
grid programme.
The venture is the largest undertaken by the
water company as they aim to upgrade their
supply infrastructure without constructing
new treatment works, comprising more than
50 individual schemes being delivered across
Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.
As one of the suppliers involved in delivering
the project, PE Pipe has already supplied
almost 27km of PE pipe on jobs ranging from
increasing Allington Reservoir’s capacity by
5 million litres at a cost of £3.5million, to the
provision of contingency supplies for areas
across Wessex Water’s jurisdiction that are
14
currently dependent on a stand-alone source.
PE Pipe have connected Tollerdown reservoir
to the village of Corscombe, Chitterne water
treatment works with Castle Barn reservoir to
provide a back-up supply for Shrewton and
the Wylye area, and Ditchampton Reservoir
with Bulbridge water treatment works to
provide security of supply to the localised
Bulbridge area of Salisbury.
Another of the schemes involves installation of
a 2,300m PE pipeline by Trant Construction
to link Snowsdon Reservoir to the water
treatment works at Black Lane and from
the treatment works to the supply main in
Blandford to address potential future issues
with increased demand and the risk of low
pressure in the existing main.

RSKW call for recognition of water issues in
UK shale gas debates
Exploration of shale gas in the UK is at an early stage, but the political
will for supporting further exploration is growing, as demonstrated
by the Chancellor’s planned tax-break incentives for companies
prospecting in this area.
Here, Ruth Allen, Managing Partner of RSKW, considers the
implications for the UK water sector.
Concerns about shale gas recovery factors, seismic activity and
possible impacts on climate change and local communities have
dominated recent debates on the subject of shale gas.
Water-related issues were raised at the ‘UK Shale 2013 - Making It
Happen’ Conference in London in a keynote speech by Water UK’s Dr
Jim Marshall, but, surprisingly, the role of the UK water sector appears
to have been largely over-looked in latest shale gas debates and
initiatives promoted at the national level.
Most of the water challenges linked to shale gas and hydraulic
fracturing are well known and relate to key areas of water quantity,
potential impacts on drinking water quality, as well as infrastructure and
treatment challenges.
As with any development, good water management and governance
is essential if the UK is to move successfully towards further exploration
phases and pilot production in a safe and efficient manner. The
success of UK shale gas operations will rely heavily on a greater level
of co-ordination, co-operation and engagement with water sector
institutions, whose roles and responsibilities will need to be clearly and
adequately defined. This is particularly so if shale gas exploration is to
be scaled up to pilot and then full-scale production.
With experts in both shale gas exploration and water management,
RSKW Ltd are well aware of the opportunities presented by shale
gas as an energy source and are facilitating communication between
relevant parties in order to develop solutions that address the key
water-related challenges specific to the UK.
By working closely together at this stage, the UK’s water and gas
sectors can develop appropriate protocols and governance from a
water management perspective to ensure our water services are not
compromised. It is essential that the key parties involved co-operate
fully to develop the required processes, enablers and controls needed
to ensure that this valuable resource is developed properly and safely.
Adler and Allan expands range of services
Pipeline response contractor, Adler and
Allan, has expanded its range of services
in the sector.
As well as providing response coverage
to pipeline operators across the UK,
as it has done for many years, the firm
is increasingly moving into planned
preventative maintenance, contaminated land
management and environmental consultancy.
Adler and Allan say, with an ageing pipeline
infrastructure, maintenance is key to spotting
problems and preventing minor faults from
escalating. They carry out tank and pipeline
cleaning, including handling all the waste
arising through their own waste plants. The
company also provides specialist pressure
cleaning of PIGs, often in remote areas
requiring particular precautions to prevent
the escape of contaminated washings.
15
Water is recycled using their proprietary new
portable filter system ‘Sockit’ which removes
hazardous waste content from the process

A spokesperson for Adler & Allan said:
“Where leakage or damage occur, it is
imperative that we respond quickly and

and the Environment Agency.
“We have been involved in some high profile
events, such as a recent incident where
we were required to clean up the residual

Saint-Gobain PAM UK rise to the challenge for WaterAid
Employees from iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading international
materials company Saint-Gobain, put on a peak performance tackling the 2013 Severn
Trent Mountain Challenge for WaterAid.
Almost one and a half million children die from diarrhoea caused by
unclean water and poor sanitation every year. The charity is dedicated
to providing safe domestic water to some of the poorest people in the
world and distributes funds to help thousands of people take their first
steps out of poverty.
Wendy Marriott of Saint-Gobain PAM UK said “We really enjoyed
competing in the Severn Trent Mountain Challenge this year. It’s a really
great cause and a great achievement for us all. Despite the heat we all
made it! There were a few blistered feet and aching shins but it was
well worthwhile”.
They have organised the annual challenge for the past 20 years, raising
a staggering £500,000 to date.
Eleven employees from Saint-Gobain PAM UK, making up two teams,
took on the challenge, navigating 10 and 20 mile routes respectively
and collectively raised more than £400 through sponsorship, with the
funds generated going towards helping people in Ethiopia.
The mountain challenge took place in the Peak District on one of the

Validating a composite repair technique for the temporary repair of corroded bends
Under current methods, the lead time to manufacture and install customer approved repairs to pipeline
configurations, such as bends and tees, is significant. Meanwhile, the affected pipeline will be operating at
reduced flow which may have severe financial and contractual implications.
In late 2008, a number of corrosion defects
were detected on forged bends at an above
ground installation site that required repair.
GL Noble Denton performed a fracture
assessment to demonstrate that the pipeline
could operate safely at the declared maximum
operating pressure. This avoided pressure
reduction and reduced gas supplies whilst
the proposed epoxy repair sleeves were
being fabricated. Read how composite
repair technology is now believed worthy of
reconsideration.
Wet-lay-up composite repairs on corroded
straight pipe have previously been validated by
pipe manufacturers in full-scale tests.
However, the use of such repairs on corroded
bends requires further qualification to the
requirements of the ISO 24817 Short Term
Survival Test. By ensuring that this technique
is approved, pipeline operators will be able
to react more quickly when pipeline damage
is detected, and minimise the risk of loss of
supply.
GL Noble Denton has validated the composite
repair using advanced numerical analysis
methods and full-scale tests. As part of this,
the company performed a number of nonlinear finite element analyses to determine the
collapse load of corroded and repaired pipe
bends under static internal pressure loading
for a range of bend geometries. This enabled
the number of full-scale tests to be reduced.
For the unrepaired corroded bends, the FEA
correctly predicted failure to occur in the
thinned ligament at the centre of the corrosion
patch; at pressures far lower than the required
spool survival test pressure. The results also
showed that, when repaired, the bends are
strengthened sufficiently so that failure occurs
in the attached pipe rather than
the bend.
GL Noble Denton has also validated the
results from the FE analyses against fullscale test results for 6” and 12” repaired and
unrepaired bends. The full-scale test results
showed a very good correlation with the FE
results and the repaired bends did not fail.
The results from this study have demonstrated
that the use of wet-lay-up composite repairs

on corroded bends is fit for purpose as a
temporary repair method. To further assess
the suitability of the repair method for longterm repairs on bends, GL Noble Denton
will be undertaking further work to include
the application of external loads, pressure/
temperature cycling and the effect of debonding of the composite repairs.

New campaign highlights highway safety in schools
Morrison Utility Services is ensuring safety is on the curriculum by
offering primary schools across the UK teaching materials
to help keep kids safe around utility construction sites
The new ‘Safety at Roadworks’ campaign follows the hugely successful
‘Jack’s Lucky Escape’ initiative, launched in 2012, which was adopted
on a number of Morrison Utility Services’ client contracts including
Yorkshire Water, Southern Water and National Grid.
Using animation in a short DVD and complementary teaching materials,
this latest campaign centres on warning signs and signals at roadworks
and delivers important safety messages to the key, high-risk audience
of primary school age children.
An online survey will enable teachers at participating schools to provide
feedback, ensuring that Morrison Utility Services is able to monitor and
measure the effectiveness of the ‘Safety at Roadworks’ theme.
Paul Kerridge, Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Director for
Morrison Utility Services said: “This campaign provides an ideal
opportunity to engage with primary schools in local communities and to
promote safe play around utilities sites.
who incorporated the programme into their
own community engagement and stakeholder
communication strategies.
“Our workforce is on the frontline in upgrade
Paul Kerridge
and maintenance programmes across the UK
and initiatives such as this provide our contract
and customer liaison teams across all utilities with
a really effective way of engaging with schools and communicating
important safety messages to young audiences in a relevant, engaging
and visually stimulating way.
“Our aim with this project is to provide schools with a teaching resource
that can be planned into a lesson flexibly and offer the children
something a little different to a typical lesson!”
“Last year’s initiative proved to be a great success and was extremely
well received by all of the schools that participated and by the clients
