FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Hoffman Family,
Welcome to the heartwarming enthusiasm of grades 3, 4 &
5 and to what should prove to be a productive and
rewarding year at Hoffman School for your child and family!
It is our hope that your child’s experience here will be
worthwhile, pleasant, and a valuable contribution to his/her
future.
The years of elementary education are a crucial component in a child’s overall school
career. It is during these years that the foundation for the future is built. Through the
working partnership of the caring adults in a child’s life, characterized by cooperation,
communication, and commitment, these foundational years can and will start a child on
a course of life-long learning and success.
Largely through your efforts at home and through the warm, empathic, and committed
efforts of the enitre Hoffman Staff, we will be able to extend the level of excellence that
Hoffman has enjoyed. It is our desire to foster a school environment that stresses
personalness, academic achievment, self-discipline, individual dignity, democratic
procedures, flexibility, and adaptability to change and the future.
Earlier in the week your child brought home a packet of information consisting of my
expectations for your child and a listing of the various rules throughout the building. I
sincerely appreciate the time that you have taken reading through this important
information with your child and returning your signed portion to school.
This issue and future issues of the “HOFFMAN HUM” are designed to provide parents
with some basic information about the programs, policies, procedures, upcoming
events, and classroom happenings at Hoffman School. Please read it carefully.
Although efforts have been made to answer questions parents might have, we fully
expect that other questions will arise. Please feel welcome to contact me or other
school personnel with your questions, concerns, and suggestions.
Again, on behalf of the entire staff at Hoffman School, I welcome you to the 2015-2016
school year, and wish you and your children a happy and successful year.
Sincerely,
Mark Walther, Principal

NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

New Plan in Place for Emergency Make-up Days
Beginning next school year, District 34 will follow a contingency plan that outlines how days will be made-up
should an emergency school closing occur. This proactive approach is to provide D34 students and staff with an
opportunity to plan in advance for how the days will be accounted for later in the school year.
Given that it is unknown how many school closing days could occur, the administration has developed the
following response plan.
Two Emergency Days Built into Calendar
Two emergency days have been built into the calendar on January 15, 2016 and April 4, 2016. If no emergency
day has occurred prior to either date, then there will be no school on these dates. However, if an emergency day
has occurred prior to either date, then school will be in session. Parents are encouraged to plan accordingly for
these days to be student attendance days.
If Additional Emergency Days Occur
The first step to make-up emergency days is to utilize the two built in emergency days (Jan. 15 and April 4).
However, if more than two emergency days occur, or if an emergency day(s) occurs after April 4, the district
would forgive up to two student attendance days and add any additional day(s) beyond that to the end of the
school year.
Seeing as though this is a new approach, the district will provide additional reminders at the beginning of next
school year as well as closer to when the winter weather season arrives. However, it is important to note that it
is expected that the emergency days built into the calendar be considered days when school is in session.
Parents are encouraged to plan accordingly for these days to be student attendance days.

School District #34
2015-2016 Instrumental Recruiting
Students in District #34 have the opportunity to join the school band or orchestra starting in
4th grade. Students who do not start instrumental instruction in 4th grade can still join in any
grade 5-8. On August 27, 2015, the instrumental music staff will present the instruments to
all 4th and 5th grade students. On Monday, August 31, 2015, 7:00pm at Attea, there will be
a Beginning Band and Orchestra Parent Night where more detailed information will be
available about the instrumental program, enrollment procedures and obtaining an instrument.
Over the following 2 weeks, directors will work with individual students to select an
appropriate instrument.
Instruction is available in flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, french horn, trumpet,
trombone, baritone, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass.
Many families already have an instrument from a family member or friend that their student is
interested in playing. Please take that instrument to a local music store over the summer to
have it checked out and repaired if necessary. August is a very busy time for music stores,
and it will take longer to service your instrument if you wait. Lessons for beginning students
will start the week of September 14th, so please make plans accordingly.
Playing an instrument can be a big commitment, but it is also very rewarding. Ensemble
playing teaches teamwork, cooperation and responsibility, as well as providing an outlet for
students’ creativity. There are many other benefits to participation in instrumental music, as
well.

FOOD GUIDELINES FOR DISTRICT 34
Glenview School District is continuing to promote healthy living and lifestyle choices
for its students. The Wellness Policy was adopted to educate students about healthy
food choices and help reduce childhood obesity.
NO FOOD ITEMS AT BIRTHDAY PARTIES
District 34 does not allow food or beverages at birthday parties at school. Instead,
there are several suggestions below for parents and children who still want to
celebrate a birthday without food, including:
• Special time/special recognition during class. Examples include the student
reading to the class, sharing a personal story with the class or selecting a fun
activity from a list provided by the teacher.
• Purchase a book for the classroom library. This might include the student’s
name in the front of the book indicating it was donated by the student in
celebration of a birthday.
• Bring in a non-food item/party favor (i.e. - pencils, erasers, stickers). Please,
no disruptive items. If you need help deciding, please contact the school for
guidance.
• Donate an indoor recess game to the classroom.
Please know all celebratory activities should be cleared with the classroom teacher
in advance but that no food or beverages will be allowed as part of these
celebrations. Administrators throughout the District are responsible for implementing
this practice.
FOOD GUIDELINES FOR NON-BIRTHDAY CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS
Food and beverage can be a part of non-birthday classroom celebrations like
Halloween and holiday parties. However, those food and drink items will be chosen
from a list of menu options developed by the Food Service Department.
These food/drink items can either be purchased through the Food Service
Department by ordering 30 days prior to the event on a first-come, first-served
limited basis. If the PTAs decide to purchase the food directly, the menu must be
followed. This will guarantee that the food/drink provided will be nutritious, balanced
and offer choices for everyone. As always, any food brought in for these
celebrations must be purchased through the Food Service Department or store
bought and in the original packaging. No homemade foods are allowed.
If you have questions or comments about this change in practice, you may contact
your building principal or the District office at 998-5000.

FOOD SERVICE INFO……….
IMPORTANT – Parents Please Read:
Parents, please make sure to check the balance of your child’s lunch account; we want your child
to have access to the meal they want. The lunch ID cards and bus passes are debit cards which
means that you are required to keep a positive balance. Students with a negative balance will
not be offered a choice of meals; instead, they will be given an alternative bagged meal,
consisting of cheese, crackers, a fruit/vegetable and milk. We want your child to be happy!
Please check your child’s balance by accessing the district website at www.glenview34.org, click
on Food Services then check account balance. If you need your child’s username or password,
please call the Food Service office at (847) 486-7702 or email [email protected].

District 34 Materials Distribution Guidelines
District 34 often receives requests from other organizations to distribute informational materials
to students. The Community Relations Department reviews and approves appropriate materials.
Please know District 34 is selective in allowing items to be distributed through our
communications system. The minimum requirements include that the individual or
organization should be based in our community and maintain non-profit status.
District 34 is making an effort to be environmentally friendly by launching a new approach to
distributing information from non-profit organizations and intergovernmental agencies. Rather
than sending flyers via backpack mail and newsletters, we will be posting such information on
the District 34 Community Announcements webpage for all to see. This will save paper,
District employee’s time and make it convenient for parents to find the information easily.
The District will provide parents reminders that the information is on our website. Those
wishing to submit information to be posted must do so electronically by e-mailing a PDF
of the flyer to [email protected] at least ten days in advance of the desired
posting date.
We ask that organizations limit postings to one per month. Approved postings will be updated
on a weekly basis.
Limited Print Materials
Upon District approval, a limited number of flyers may be made available in the main office. It
will be up to the requesting organization to provide paper copies to each school once approval
has been granted. It is not possible for schools to make additional copies or to distribute to
individual classrooms/students. These flyers must be delivered to the Administration Building,
1401 Greenwood Road.

¡Muchísimas gracias por su ayuda!
Middle and Intermediate School Cell Phone Use Agreement Form
It is the intention of the Board of Education to provide a safe and secure learning
environment for the students in its schools and to structure the possession of electronic
signaling devices so that student welfare and safety and the educational environment are not
adversely affected. To that end, every classroom in the district maintains a telephone that
students are able to access with teacher permission.
Electronic Signaling Devices
Students may not use or possess electronic paging devices or two way radios on school
property at any time.
Cell Phones
The possession and use of cell phones at the middle and intermediate school level are to be
used in emergency situations and not merely for convenience. As such, they are subject to
the following rules:
1. A parent must register his/her child’s cell phone with the school by completing
and signing the “Cell Phone Use Agreement” form.
2. This form will be kept on file at the school for the current school year. It will
need to be renewed at the start of each school year.
3. The cell phone is not for use during the school day and must be kept in the
student’s locker from the start of the school day until 3:00pm. During this time,
the cell phone must be turned OFF (no tone or vibrating features should be on). A
student’s school day starts the moment the child enters the building. Games,
cameras, text messaging, and other add on devices for cell phones are not to be
used during the school day.
Violations of the above guidelines will result in the following:
First Offense: The phone will be confiscated and will be returned only to a parent. It will be
the parent’s responsibility to establish a time to meet with the appropriate administrator to
collect the phone. The student will be issued an administrative detention for violating the
policy.
Second Offense: The phone will be confiscated and will be returned only to a parent. It will
be the parent’s responsibility to establish a time to meet with the appropriate administrator to
collect the phone. The student will be issued an in-school seclusion for violating the policy a
second time.
Third Offense: The phone will be confiscated and will be returned only to a parent along with
a notice that a further infraction of the policy will result in confiscation of the phone for the
remainder of the school year. The student will be issued a Saturday seclusion for violating the
policy a third time.
Fourth Offense: The phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the school year.
If you elect to provide your child with a cell phone, you must complete the attached
Agreement Form and return it to the school. By completing the Agreement Form you are
indicating that you have read and understand the above guidelines regarding the use of cell
phones at school

• Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! New this
year – one less newsletter to read! We are no longer
distributing the Henking Hoffman PTA eNewsletter.
Instead, we will include current information about PTA
happenings and events every week right here in this PTA
Corner.
• PTA Website: We also have enhanced our website,
which will serve as a portal for all things HE/HO PTA.
Feel free to visit the website (and put it in your favorites!)
http://henkinghoffmanpta.org. We hope it allows you to
more easily find PTA information and register for events
online whether at home, work, etc.
• Want to Become Member?? The Henking Hoffman PTA is a vibrant, volunteer-based organization that offers fun and
fulfilling ways for parents to become more involved in the Henking Hoffman Community. Welcome to our new and returning
members! And, “thank you” to the nearly 250 families who registered for the PTA before school started! This is a record number!
But, there is still time to join the PTA and select your volunteer preferences if you haven't already had the chance. Please
visit http://henkinghoffmanpta.org/join-us and enter your email address to get started. You can pay online via PayPal or with
cash/check made out to HE/HO PTA in an envelope sent to school. Your $20 annual family membership will include a student
directory, available this Fall.
• Show Your Henking/Hoffman Spirit - Promotional Items for Sale ---During the 9/3 (Henking) and 9/9 (Hoffman) Curriculum
nights, we will be selling festive promotional items featuring Henking Hawks and Hoffman Hornets. Water bottles are $7, magnets
are $3, and post-it notes are $2 or 3 for $5. This fundraiser is replacing our Mixed Bags fundraiser, so be sure to pick them up!
•
Don’t forget ----Your Everyday Shopping Helps the PTA even in the smallest ways!
1. Heinen's Teaming Up for Education Program: Up to 1% of what you buy at Heinen's can
come back to our schools. Last year your shopping raised $1,500 for the PTA. Please note: you
must update your school preference EVERY YEAR. Please visit heinensrewards.com (and go
to "My Profile") or visit the customer service desk in store to select Henking Hoffman
Elementary PTA for the 2015-2016 school year.
2. Amazon Smile: Did you know Amazon has a program that helps charities, like the HE/HO
PTA? Login to your account via this link https://smile.amazon.com, and enter your preferred
charity as “Henking Hoffman PTA Inc." Amazon will donate 0.5% of all purchases directly to
HE/HO PTA. Same Amazon, bigger heart!
• Next Week: Be sure to catch next week’s PTA Corner for an up to date PTA calendar and information on upcoming exciting
events.
•
Upcoming: We look forward to seeing our Event Chairs at the 9/11 meeting to kick off the year. Look for details.

Glenview District 34 schools are part of the USDA’s National School Lunch Program. School lunches must meet
meal pattern and nutrition standards based on the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the MyPlate
model. The current meal pattern increases the availability of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in the school
menu. The meal pattern’s dietary specifications set specific calorie limits to ensure age-appropriate meals for
grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Other meal enhancements include gradual reductions in the sodium content of the
meals (sodium targets must be reached by SY 2017-18 and SY 2022-23). While school lunches must meet
Federal meal requirements. Local school food authorities make decisions about what specific foods to serve and
how they are prepared.
School Lunches are FIVE STAR meals consisting of five food components:
FRUITS
VEGETABLES
PROTEIN
WHOLE GRAINS
DAIRY
To make a “complete lunch”, students must choose at least 3 of the 5 components; one of these choices
MUST be a Fruit or Vegetable. Students can choose all 5 components. A higher A la Carte price will be
charged for meals that do not contain a fruit or vegetable. If your student usually gets a free or reduced price
lunch or your student pays the full price, you would also be charged the higher A la Carte price if a complete
meal were not selected.
Applications for meal assistance will be mailed home sometime around August 1st. A new application is required
to be on file in our office if you want your student to qualify for free or reduced meals. Some students may be
“Directly Certified” for free meals through the State of Illinois. If your student is Directly Certified, you will
receive a letter from us stating so. All paid status students must have money in their accounts when they
purchase meals, as the accounts are debit accounts.
2015-16 Meal Lunch Prices:
Complete Lunch $ 2.65, Incomplete Lunch $ 2.95
Breakfast- $1.70, Ala Carte $ 2.20 Milk Price- $ .60

Hoffman Hum Newsletter Distribution
At Hoffman School we continue to make baby steps to improve our
environmental footprint and conserve resources when we can. One way to do this is to
reduce the paper copies we make. Production and distribution of the Hoffman Hum
electronically is one way to accomplish this goal.
Our school newsletter, the Hoffman HUM, is published weekly. Starting next week, we will
email the newsletter to you via an email link to the email address we have on record. You
can also read the newsletter online as it will be posted to our school website at
www.glenview34.org/ho.
We will, of course, distribute printed copies of our newsletters to those families who cannot
access the website and/or request hard
copies. To request a hard copy, please call the school office at 847/998-5040.
Thank you for your support of our “green” efforts to save paper.
