Born in Mexico, Ramírez was diagnosed as schizophrenic and confined to California psychiatric hospitals for more than 30 years. During that time he produced more than 450 dynamic drawings and collages imbued with hypnotic power. Utilizing repeating lines and motifs, Ramírez visually transcended his own experience to create a remarkably visualized world, free of the concepts of time, constraints and borders. Today Ramírez’s work has become recognized as outsider art. His work has been exhibiting in numerous solo exhibitions throughout the country, and his fame and notoriety continues to grow. Most recently, in March of 2015, Ramírez’s work was selected to appear on a U.S. postage stamp. Presented by the National Museum of Mexican Art and Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art. After the reading, children will make their own alebrije out of recycled materials to decorate and take home. “Tsipeni y Joselito” is the story of a little boy, Joselito, who is being bullied at school. He experiences frightening dreams involving scary monster-type creatures, known as alebrijes in Mexico. One night, a small alebrije appears. He is smiling and good natured, and the other alebrijes try to scare him away. He stands up to them and, eventually, they leave. It is an adventure that represents what an immigrant needs to do in order to adopt her new land and how she can never forget in her heart the place where she was born. But it is something that all immigrants HAVE to suffer. $10 at the National Museum of Mexican Art Purchase tickets at www.NationalMuseumofMexicanArt.org Co-sponsored by THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART’S SOR JUANA FESTIVAL SOR JUANA LEGACY AWARD Chola Con Cello Friday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m. "Maria Elena Gaitán (Chola con Cello) is a musician, linguist, cultural worker, performance artist, scholar, educator, translator, interpreter, consultant for museums, art galleries, community arts and philanthropic organizations. From the Chicago neighborhoods where she grew up and set her groundbreaking novel “The House on Mango Street”, to her abode in Mexico in a region where “my ancestors lived for centuries”, the places Sandra Cisneros has lived have provided inspiration for her now-classic works of fiction and poetry. But a house of her own, where she could truly take root, has eluded her. With this collectionspanning three decades, and including never-before-published work, Cisneros has come home at last. $10 at the National Museum of Mexican Art Purchase tickets at www.NationalMuseumofMexicanArt.org Visit www.NationalMuseumofMexicanArt.org for detailed information about each performance.
