July 5, 2015 — Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time DIOCESE OF AUSTIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN CENTRAL TEXAS St. Mary’s Catholic Church OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary's is a community of believers dedicated to the living worship of God. As the only Catholic Church in Limestone County, our faith community reflects the ethnic diversity of the towns in which we live. We gather to fulfill our mission as disciples of Jesus Christ: we hear His Word, we celebrate the Sacraments and we witness His love to others. Our Christian witness consists of sharing our spiritual gifts with the grace of God and the example and prayers of our patron saint, the Immaculate Conception, among us and with others - striving to grow in Holiness. July 4-5, 2015 -- 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Today’s Gospel records that Jesus was not believed or welcomed and this lack of faith was so distressing that he could work no miracles there except for a few healings. We might wonder about the skepticism and doubt of those contemporaries of Jesus, but that attitude might keep us from recognizing that we can be just as close-minded and skeptical. We are invited this Sunday to humbly examine our own attitudes toward the poor, immigrants, and the unborn; toward church teaching on economic justice, the environment and family life. Have we hardened our hearts to God’s voice and presence like those of old? PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EVENTS ANUNCIOS EN ESPAÑOL Vacation Bible Starts Tomorrow: Join us for an incredible Adventure! In recent years, this claim has been found among some certain Protestant groups, like the Pentecostal world. Evangelicals such as Finnis Dake, Jimmy Swaggart, Kenneth Copeland, and Benny Hinn have all (at least on occasion) taught this. People taking this position might point out that man is made in the image and likeness of God (Gn. 1:26-27) and that there are verses that refer to the strong right arm of God, his all-seeing eyes, and so forth. This is a misunderstanding that doesn’t appreciate the use of metaphor in Scripture. References of God’s strong arm, his eyes, and such, are metaphors referring to God’s power and knowledge. They are not to be taken literally any more than Scripture’s reference to God having feathers and wings (Ps 91:4 - “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge”). Other verses make the immaterial nature of God clear. In John 4:24 Jesus teaches, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Elsewhere he notes, “a spirit has not flesh and bones” (Lk 24:39). There is a difference between being a spirit and having a spirit. Jesus indicates that the Father is a spirit, not that he merely has one. This implies he lacks a body and is an entirely spiritual being. The Church Fathers taught the same, recognizing that God is an unchangeable, immaterial spirit who has an entirely simple (“in-composite”) nature - that is, a nature containing no parts. This in itself means that God does not have a body, because all bodies extend through space and thus can be divided into parts. If God cannot be divided into parts then he cannot have a body. This refers, of course, to God’s essence as a spiritual being. It is quite possible for him to take on a human nature, and with it a body, the way the Son did by becoming incarnate. But Christ’s human body was not something essential to his divine nature. In his divinity, the Son - like the Father and the Spirit - is entirely immaterial. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS I n Service To One.
