Dear Phoenix Families:
As hard as it may be to believe, we are nearing the end of the term. January 22nd is
the final day of the first semester. Have you been tracking your student’s grades?
Offering praise for improvement or for continued excellence? I had a mentor one
time, early in my administrative career who loved to say “inspect what you expect.”
That was his way of reminding me that if I wanted staff to meet a certain expectation, I had to be vigilant to watch for it and make corrections when the expectations
were not being met. The same can be applied to parenting and with the Infinite
campus parent portal, tracking progress for your child has never been easier!
We will offer another evening opportunity to learn how to log into Infinite campus
on January 12th from 6-7 PM at our school. We will even help you add the App to
your phone. This can be a great way to help your child and yourself create a New
Year’s resolution to be more on top of school performance. Creative incentives
based on effort and most importantly talk about school with your child. If your child
is falling behind in homework, consider signing them up for Boys and Girls club
where they can get homework help four days per week! It is never too late to join.
This last month has a few items to highlight including our annual fall fundraiser.
This year 72 students earned a trip to the Kalahari for their participation. The fundraiser permits us to be able to support our Positive Behavior incentive program. Ask
your child about all the incentives and activities related to PBIS. Without the fundraiser, this would not be possible.
Has your child attended an activity night? Did you know that these nights are helping to fund a summer trip for some of our students to visit Washington DC this summer? Hopefully we will inspire a future generation of leaders who want to make a
difference for all of us! Thank you to Ms. Sepulveda who organizes this monthly
activity. We are such a geographically spread out district that it is nice to be able to
offer a social event where kids can hang out in a supervised area, but still just be
kids having fun.
On December 1st, Phoenix Middle school hosted our first ever “Courage Retreat.”
The retreat is led by an organization known as Youth Frontiers. The goal of the retreat is to build a community based on respect, kindness and moral courage. If
you have a seventh grade student, ask them to share their act of courage that they
chose to focus upon.

Counselor’s Corner
From the desk of the Associate Principal, Jim Karedes:
It may be difficult to believe, another year gone by and that much closer to your son or
daughter moving onto the next grade level. While we have done a lot thus far, we have
a lot more to achieve. Parents & Guardians, you can help out your children by making
sure they're reading a minimum of 20 minutes every night of the week, including weekends. When your middle school son/daughter says they have no homework, that may be the case, but
they can always be reading! 20 minutes of pleasure reading or even content reading will lead to significant gains in fluency and comprehension. If your child is a reluctant reader, perhaps they want more
real-life reading material. Engage them in rules & regulations manuals based on their interests (ie.
snowmobiling, ice-skating, landscaping, hair-styling). Novels are great, but a lot of reading content can
be found in newspapers, magazines and other manuals. For example, we have several students that
enjoy fishing. Knowing all of the regulations of that sport requires reading, even if they go to the DNR
website on their Chromebooks to look-up and read the fishing regulations. Help your child out, get them
reading 20 minutes nightly!
Finally, make sure to review your child's homework daily. Every parent/guardian has 24 hour access to
their child's grades, attendance & behavior through Infinite Campus. If you haven't looked this year,
please make it a point to call my office and I will have you up and running in the program within 10
minutes.
May 2016 bring you and your child even more happiness and success than 2015.

Parents of 6th grade students!
If your family is interested in participating in “Read to Succeed” this school year,
please have your student stop in the Library for a participation form. The Reading
Log information will be sent home with your child. Along with the log will be
instructions and turn-in dates. What is this program? Students read for 600
minutes at home over approximately six weeks and earn one free pass to Six Flags
Great America for the student. It is the responsibility of the family to take the student to the park. The program is open to all students in grades Kindergarten
through 6th grade.

Veterinarian
IMPROVING YOUR MEMORY:
The following are proven strategies that will help you improve
memory retention and ability to recall important information:
Make the information meaningful
In order to remember new information presented to you, in
your mind summarize the information you've just learned in
your own words.
Organize the information
Organizing information into logical categories is one of the most effective ways of
improving recall and memory. "Chunking" is another organization strategy for
memorizing information. When you chunk, you simply group information into small
groups of three to five items at a time.
Veterinarians diagnose and treat sick and injured animals, including dogs, cats,
horses, and cows.
Core Tasks
Examine animals and diagnose problems
Treat diseases or injuries
Vaccinate animals to prevent illnesses
Provide advice about animal care to owners
May specialize in the care of small household pets or large farm animals







In order to remember or learn a concept, you must practice active studying. One
way to be an active studier is to teach the information you are studying to classmates in a study group

Association involves associating, or "connecting", a word or event with a place,
feeling, person, situation, or thing. Association is a very powerful memory strategy
that allows the brain to connect something it's already familiar with to something
new that it's not familiar with.

EDUCATION:



After high school you must complete 2 to 4 years of pre-veterinary or science
studies at college before applying to veterinary school. It is s a good idea to complete a full Bachelor of Science degree before applying.
Veterinary schools require you to have completed courses in specific subjects
before they will consider your application. Since these subjects vary depending on
the school, you should contact the school you plan to attend to find out which
subjects you should take during your pre-veterinary studies. It’s very difficult to get
into veterinary school, and you must have extremely high marks to be accepted.
Once you are accepted by a veterinary school, it takes another 4 years of study to
graduate with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.

Hour of CODE. During the month of December, students participated in a global initiative
to teach one Billion students to CODE.
Learning computer programming, also called coding, is becoming increasingly easy and also
fun for kids and parents alike with more and more websites and apps offering opportunities to code. Coding has many benefits, including developing problem solving and criticalthinking skills in kids, as well as helping them understand how the technology they enjoy is
created. It empowers them to become creators as well. Students can practice Coding at
www.ddschools.org by accessing the middle school student tech portal.

Phoenix Middle School Sports
We would love for your child to join one or more of the sports Phoenix offers! In order for your child to
join, you will need to follow 6 steps:
Step 1: Your child needs a Physical Examination. If your child has had a physical since April 1, 2014
and we have a green athletic card on file filled out by you and your physician from last school year,
then you will need to fill out a yellow alternate year participation card for this school year. The yellow card does not
need a doctor’s signature. If your child has not had a physical since April 1, 2014, then you will need to have a green
athletic card filled out by you and your physician. If your child has had a physical since April 1, 2014, but we never received a green athletic card from you, then you will need to fill one out and simply ask your physician to sign the green
card verifying the date of your child’s physical exam.
Step 2: Fill out the white emergency card (on a half sheet). This is usually attached to the green athletic card or yellow alternate year participation card.
Step 3: You and your child will need to read the concussion informational packet and sign the agreement form.
Step 4: You and your child will need to read and sign the Athletic Code.
Step 5: You will need to pay the Co-Curricular Fee. It is $25 and covers all extra-curricular activities for the 2015-2016
school year.
Step 6: Remind your child show up for the first day of practice!!

6th Grade Intramural Sports
6th Grade Intramural Sports has been expanded at Phoenix!! Along with Flag Football in the fall, we will now offer
6th grade basketball for boys and girls. The season starts immediately after winter break on Monday, January
5thafter school in the gym. The season will end on Tuesday, February 10th. Practices go until 4:30 every weekday
except for Wednesdays. There will be a few game days as well. A schedule will be handed out to the athletes to indicate these days. A physical is not required for intramural sports and the activity fee will only be $10. Stay tuned for
6th grade girls volleyball in the spring as well.

Visualizing Strategy
“If I can picture it, I can understand it.” ~ Albert Einstein
Description
Students are bombarded with the visual images on TV and video games. As a result, they often view
reading as a passive activity. A simple technique -- visualization -- can help transform students from
passive to active readers while improving their reading comprehension.
This strategy can be implemented before, during, and after reading.

BEFORE reading, look at the title, skim the material and note any pictures or graphs. Try to
put an image in your mind of what you think the story will be about.

DURING reading, begin to play the movie in your mind.

AFTER reading, review the material that you read by recalling the scenes you have created.
Please remember the Holiday Season is the perfect time to share
the gift of literacy!

Makerspace: Video to DVD – Available all month
Mountains of home videos and nothing to watch them on? We have a video to DVD machine set up in the
Youth area through the month of January. It is available on a first come, first served basis. Bring your own
blank DVD, or purchase one from us for a nominal fee.
Knit and Crochet Club – Monday, January 4 & 11 and Wednesday, January 20 & 27 at 6 p.m.
For all ages and experience levels, Knit and Crochet Club meets at 6 p.m. on the scheduled dates. Bring your
own project to work on, share your expertise, and learn from others.
Book Buzz: Parent-Child Book Club – Wednesday, January 13 at 4 p.m.
Come one, come all… to a brand new book club aimed at 8-12 year olds and their parents! We’ll meet the
second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m.to discuss our chosen book, have snacks, and do an activity or
craft! Parents are invited—but not required—to participate. This month’s book will be Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee. Please contact the library if you’d like a copy of the book reserved for you. Have

Pluto: Planet or Not? – Thursday, January 14 at 6 p.m.
Many people have questioned the recent removal of Pluto from the traditional list of nine planets. Retired
astronomer Wayne Osborn will discuss the background of this change. The talk will be on a non-technical level suitable for teens and adults.

Por difícil que sea de creer, nos estamos acercando al final del término. El último día del
primer semestre es el 22 de enero. ¿Ha estado siguiendo las calificaciones de su estudiante? Ofreciendo elogios para la mejora y excelencia continua? Tuve un mentor una
vez, al principio de mi carrera administrativa a quien le encantaba decir "inspecciona lo
que esperas." Esa era su manera de recordarme que si quería que el personal cumpliera
con una cierta expectativa, tenía que estar atento para ver y hacer correcciones cuando
no se están cumpliendo las expectativas. Lo mismo se puede aplicar a los padres y con el
portal de padres Infinite Campus, el seguimiento del progreso de su hijo nunca ha sido
tan fácil!
Vamos a ofrecer una oportunidad en la tarde para aprender cómo iniciar una sesión en
Infinite Campus el 12 de enero de 6-7 pm en nuestra escuela. Incluso le ayudaremos a
añadir la aplicación a su teléfono. Esto puede ser una gran manera de ayudar a su hijo y
usted mismo, creando una resolución de Año Nuevo de estar más atento al rendimiento
escolar de su hijo. Incentivos creativos basados en el esfuerzo y lo más importante hablar de la escuela con su hijo. Si su hijo se está atrasando en la tarea, considere la posibilidad de inscribirse en Boys and Girls Club donde pueden obtener ayuda con la tarea
cuatro días a la semana! Nunca es demasiado tarde para unirse.

valentía que escogieron

ustedes pueden ayudar a sus hijos, asegurándose de que están leyendo un mínimo de 20 minutos

Después de la secundaria debe completar 2 a 4 años de estudios de pre-veterinaria o
la ciencia en la universidad antes de aplicar a la escuela de veterinaria. Es una
buena idea completar una licenciatura en Ciencias antes de aplicar.

para enseñar mil millones de estudiantes CODE.
Aprender Programación informática, también llamado codificación, es cada vez más fácil y también
divertido para niños y padres por igual con más sitios web y aplicaciones que ofrecen oportunidades a
código. Codificación tiene muchos beneficios, incluyendo el desarrollo de habilidades de resolución de
problemas y el pensamiento crítico en los niños, así como ayudar a entender cómo se crea la tecnología

Cómo unirse a los deportes que ofrece Phoenix
Nos encantaría que su hijo se uniera a uno o más de los deportes que ofrece Phoenix! Para que su hijo se una, usted tendrá que seguir
6 pasos:
Paso 1: Su hijo necesita un examen físico. Si su hijo ha tenido un examen físico desde abril 1, 2014 y tenemos una
tarjeta de atletismo verde en nuestro archivo, llenado por usted y su médico del previo año escolar, entonces usted
tendrá que llenar una tarjeta amarilla de participación (Año Alternativo) para este año escolar . La tarjeta amarilla no necesita la firma de un médico. Si su hijo no ha tenido un examen físico desde abril 1, 2014, entonces usted
tendrá que tener una tarjeta de atletismo verde llenado por usted y su médico. Si su hijo ha tenido un examen
físico el 1 de abril de 2014, pero nunca lleno una tarjeta deportiva verde, entonces usted tendrá que llenar la hoja
deportiva verde y simplemente preguntarle a su médico que la firmar, verificando la fecha del examen físico de su hijo.
Paso 2: Llene la tarjeta de emergencia blanca (viene en media hoja). Esto generalmente se adjunta a la tarjeta deportiva verde o la
tarjeta amarilla de participación año alternativo.
Paso 3: Usted y su hijo tendrán que leer el paquete informativo de conmoción cerebral y firmar el formulario de conformidad.

Deportes Intramuros 6º Grado
¡Los deportes intramuros se han expandido en la Escuela Phoenix! A la par del futbol ameri
cano en el otoño, ahora ofreceremos basquetbol varonil y femenil para 6º grado. La temporada empieza inmediatamente después de las vacaciones de invierno, el lunes 5 de enero, después de clases en el gimnasio. La temporada terminará el martes 10 de febrero. Las prácticas se realizarás todos los días, excepto los miércoles. Tendremos algunos días de juegos también. Se entregará un calendario a los atletas indicando estos días. No se
requiere un examen físico par deportes intramuros y el costo para esta actividad es únicamente de $10. Manténganse
alerta para la temporada de volibol en la primavera también.
