Back-to-school season is (Photo, Alyssa Torres) here, and according to MADD, children may face tough issues brought on by peer pressure, including alcohol. Research shows that more than 40 percent of all 10th graders drink alcohol. And, according to research by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 1 in 7 teens binge drinks, yet only 1 in 100 parents believes his or her teen binge drinks. Jason Derscheid, executive director of MADD South Texas, explained how parents remain the number one influence on their teens’ decisions about alcohol and how they should begin to ex-plain the seriousness of drinking and driving at See MADD on page 10 Back-to-school anxiety: How can parents help? By Christina Acosta [email protected] As the school year begins, many pupils feel many emotions going back to school including anger and anticipation; however, anxiety is the growing emotion many kids feel. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) states that anxiety disorders affect 1 in 8 children. Many parents feel sentimental about their child going to school and do not know how to cope with their children during the new school year. As the disease continues to grow, there is hope for family members to ease the nerves and to grow stronger. La Prensa spoke with Licensed Psychologist Dr. Joshua Essery at Clarity Child Guidance Center to learn how to tackle the emotions of the student. “It is important to understand that every child on some level experiences anxiety,” stated Dr. Essery. “When going back to school, it often means that they refuse to go to school and As many children are going back to school, a hidden emotion for 1 in 8 children is anxiSee Back-to-school anxiety ety. The national nonprofit organization distributed the materials Saturday, Aug. 6, at Operation Homefront Headquarters as a part of its annual Back-to-School Brigade. Operation Homefront’s part- nerships with Dollar Tree, SAIC and Honda Financial Services make the Back-to-School Brigade possible. “Operation Homefront’s mission is to help build strong, stable and secure military families so that they thrive – not just get by – in the communities they’ve worked so hard to protect,” Operation Homefront Chief Operating Officer and Retired Air Force Brigadier Gen. Robert Thomas said. “The Back-to-School Brigade is one way that Operation Homefront thanks military families for their service by easing the financial burden of the back-to-school season.” Parents were grateful. “It’s good to see people doing this for military families,” Grisella W., the spouse of a soldier, said. “I want to give thanks to Operation Homefront and for their support.” The national nonprofit organization distributed the materials Saturday, Aug. 6, at Operation Homefront Headquarters as a part of its annual Back-to-School Brigade. It’s giving us the power to do things with our lives.” Dollar Tree patrons nationwide donated more than $5.6 million in school supplies through the Back-to-School Brigade in 2015. More than 230,000 backpacks have been distributed since Dollar Tree became a partner in the Back-to-School Brigade in 2008. 6 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 10 de agosto de 2016 Aproveche al máximo sus compras del regreso a la escuela colegio llegaron a casi $68 mil Por Miguel Segura millones. Camp University Kids! brings summer fun to the hospital By Alyssa Torres Kids at University Hospital recently got to meet “Chloe,” an owl that was rescued and has been with SeaWorld for 15 years, during the hospital’s summer camp, Camp University Kids! The young patients were able to participate in the fun exhibit, along with their siblings and family members, where they got to learn exciting owl facts. SeaWorld’s staff members explained how referring to the owl as “wise” is just a myth since “owls really have tiny brains,” which surprised many children. The kids were able to take photos with Chloe and their happiness clearly showed in their faces. This SeaWorld animal exhibit was just one of the week’s activities during Camp University Kids! in an effort to bring summer fun to the kids. Various key organizations that work to help veterans and their families are getting a big boost, thanks to new funding from the Texas Veterans Commission. The Commission recently announced that it is providing grants totaling $1.9 million to groups that directly assist vets in different facets, from financial counseling to parental skillbuilding to free transportation. The Alamo Area Council of Governments hosted the Commission and other grant recipients to announce the great news for our veteran community. “We’re delighted to have such a great group of organizations here with us today,” said Diane Rath, AACOG executive director. “We’re thankful to the Commission for continuing to recognize how crucial it is for us to do all we can to help our vets here in Military City, USA.” The TVC granted $300,000 for AACOG’s Call-A-Ride-4Vets program, which provides veterans and their families free counseling services as well as addressing their transportation needs, whether it’s for medical appointments, grocery shopping or to attend social events. Other organizations also granted TVC funding represented at the event included GreenPath Financial Wellness, The Children’s Shelter and Operation Comfort. “The need for parental services to empower and engage our military veterans and their dependents will help combat child abuse and neglect in Bexar County,” said Anais Biera Miracle, vice-president of External Affairs at The Children’s Shelter. “We will work in providing in-home services, which will include case management, family support groups and mental health counseling.” Its $200,000 grant will enable Operation Comfort to continue The Texas Veteran Commission granted $300,000 for AACOG’s Call-A-Ride-4-Vets program, which provides veterans and their families free counseling services as well as addressing their transportation needs, whether it’s for medical appointments, grocery shopping or to attend social events. It can impact the child’s self-esteem and how they see the world in the future if the anxiety is not effectively addressed by those around them.” Dr. Essery advised that the first step to defeat anxiety is to have an open dialogue with your child. It is recommended to approach your child with compassionate interest and openness by asking questions about school without making assumptions. For a younger child who might use less dialogue, Dr. Essery said it is essential to ask them if they would be willing to draw a picture about the first day of school and talk about it. “It is important for all children to know that they can talk to their parents or family members without any fear to open up,” he mentioned. A teen’s education can also be affected by drinking, according to Michelle Kelley, coordinator for high school counseling services at Northside Independent School District. The American Medical Association suggests that they can fall behind in school, have suicidal thoughts, depression and engage in violence. “We teach staff members and teachers to recognize high risk (continued from page 1) Parents and family members are also recommended to have a realistic view of the child’s strengths and needs. This step will help the parents understand that the child is the one that has to experience success and failure on his/her own during school, whether with peers or school work. Parents can aim towards the child’s independence, while also ensuring that the child receives an appropriate amount of support and supervision to do their best. Finally, Dr. Essery wants parents to remember that the educational process and the academic work go hand in hand. When kids are in school, he added, they are educated and socialized in a different way from home, exceeding expectations and function within a societal structure with others who are different, which can progress social skills, self-awareness and the ability to understand others. “It is important for families to recognize that going back to school bring a lot of feelings. It is important that parents take time to reflect on their own emotional experience and to ensure that they are taking care of themselves so they can be at their child’s needs,” concluded Dr. Essery. with his girlfriend when he was hit by a drunk driver. While Moreno’s son made a full recovery, his girlfriend was left paralyzed from the waist down. “We know that a driver that has been drinking at any age is dangerous, but for minors, underage drinking is not only unsafe, it is against the law,” stated Moreno. In closing, Derscheid explained that it is going to take everyone together to get the message across to not drink under the age of 21. “If you’re a parent, please take the time to talk to your kids about alcohol. Let them know to never get into a vehicle with someone who has been drink-ing,” he concluded. MADD is tackling the problem of underage drinking by conducting “Power of Parents” trainings across the state to empower parents to talk with their kids about alcohol. MADD’s program pro-vides parents the information and tools they need to have these potentially lifesaving, frank con-versations with their children. *CDC (Centro para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades) 14 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 10 de agosto de 2016 One easy thing you can do to lose weight By Maria A Palafox, MD About one-third of Americans are overweight and another third are obese. If I could give up a pound for every article on weight loss I have read, I would be a Victoria’s Secret model. An article I read recently caught my attention enough that I am somewhat motivated to follow its recommendations, so I am going to throw it out there for you. I will provide the disclaimer that I am still in the thinking stages, but if I am willing to try it, I am hoping you will be too. A recent study took 48 healthy but overweight volunteers and divided them into two groups. Both groups started on a weight loss plan, but one group weighed themselves monthly and the second group weighed themselves daily. Painful! When I first read the article I thought, no way! I hate weighing myself! I don’t want to know! But the truth is, that is part of the problem. Ignorance is bliss, and it is easy to stick pan dulce after pan dulce in my mouth if I am ignoring the consequences. So in this study, one group weighed themselves daily. When they compared the two groups, the group that weighed daily lost 20 pounds over six months! The group that had weighed monthly had lost only a fraction of that at the six month mark. Remember that both groups followed a sensible weight loss plan with the size of the meals controlled, and both groups participated in moderate exercise three to five days out of the week. My only concern about weighing daily is this: I am easily discouraged. So if I weigh myself daily and don’t see 20 pounds melt away as soon as I start just thinking about a diet, then I say, oh well, it can’t be done, and I give up. If you are like me, then this is probably part of the reason we are overweight. We didn’t gain weight overnight (or did we!), so it won’t be lost overnight. Commit yourself to a certain amount of time, like three or six months, and resolve to stick with it no matter what. Let’s also promise to try out the strategy in this study, and weight ourselves daily, or even weekly. One thing that this study demonstrates is that holding ourselves accountable by weighing ourselves helps us lose weight. Pretty soon the kids will be back at school and eventually the weather will start cooling off, so make a commitment now to good health and start weighing yourself for weight loss!
