FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 05, 2015 Mass Intentions Today’s Gospel Reflection 1st Reading: Ez 2:2-5 * Psalm 123:1-4 * 2nd Reading: 2 Cor 12:7-10 * Gospel: Mk 6:1-6a FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’ two‑fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence? JULY 2015 04 Sat 05 Sun 06 Mon 07 Tue 08 Wed 09 Thurs 10 Fri 11 Sat 5:00pm 7:00am 8:30am 10:00am 11:30am 1:00pm † Kenneth D. We can better serve you when you are a registered parishioner. You will be able to claim your donations to the church towards your income tax returns at the end of the year. There may come a time when you may need character reference or certification of good moral character. You will also need proof that you are a registered parishioner when your child or a family member will receive the sacraments of baptism, first communion, confirmation, marriage, etc., or when you are asked to be a godparent or sponsor. May God bless you on this 4th of July weekend. In celebration, I offer you this prayer: Lord, we stand today as our forefathers have stood before You in times gone by celebrating our history and reveling in all the great things that our country has achieved. On this day, we rejoice in the favor You have graciously given us. We thank You for the blessings of liberty, for this generation and for the generations to come. We thank You for our independence, peace and for all those who have bravely given their lives in the defense of freedom and justice. We thank You that Your gracious and provident hand has given us so much. Amen. Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school. Call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s Catholic education can fit into your budget. Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis @ [email protected]. Fr. Manny offers a $1000 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy. Yours in Christ, St. Michael Preschool Religious Education We are accepting Peace! In a couple of weeks registration for the parish school of religion will begin and will run through August. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage our parishioners to help get the word out regarding the parish religious program. In the past few months while interviewing young families who are asking for baptism for their infant children I have become aware that there are many school age children out there who have never been in a religious education program. The main reason is that parents do not know about what our parish offers. They do not know because most of them do not attend Church on a regular basis. Many of them need catechesis themselves, and do not understand what they have promised to God when they baptized their older children. Most of these parents have asked for baptism from St. Michael because someone they know had recommended it to them, or simply because we are the closest Church to them. There are over 3,000 families registered in the parish, many of whom have acquaintances, friends and even relatives with school age children who ought to be in the religious education program. Surely these families can get the word out regarding this very important parish resource. The work of evangelization is the responsibility of every baptized person. It is our calling to do this, it is not an option. Pope Francis in his exhortation “Joy of the Gospel” calls all of us to serve the poor without discrimination. He adds that the greatest discrimination of all is the lack of spiritual care. Please take this exhortation to heart and reach out to your neighbors and friends and tell them about the parish religious education program. Thank you. - Buena Algoso Lucy Zamorano, Director 619-472-5437 CHILDREN AGES 2 TO 5 YEARS We are DRIVEN to teach Catholic-values based life.
