Other members present were: Ms. Susan Duncan, Secretary; Ms. Maureen Cashmon, Member; Mr. Steven Carrillo, Member; and Dr. Joel Boyd, Superintendent. President Ms. Linda Trujillo was excused. I.B Pledge of Allegiance & Salute to the New Mexico Flag Vice President Price led the Pledge of Allegiance and Salute to the New Mexico Flag. I.D Approval of Agenda Member Cashmon made motion to approve the agenda, Secretary Duncan seconded the motion. All in favor, motion carried. II. Executive Session Secretary Duncan made motion for the Board to go into Executive Session, Member Carrillo seconded the motion. III. Superintendent and Board Announcements Board Announcements Vice President Price announced the passing of Julian Bond and requested a moment of silence; Vice President Price read Teacher’s resignation letter; ‘My profession … no longer exists’ by Gerald J. Conti as published in the Washington Post by Valerie Strauss; Vice President Price thanked staff and the Superintendent for the smooth school opening; Member Cashmon complemented the transportation staff for their diligence in answering constituents’ transportation related questions; Member Carrillo announced: o Great job on the supplement that was published in the New Mexican regarding the first day of school; o Santa Fe High Theater’s play was a hit in Scotland; o Football season opens on Friday, August 28th, with Santa Fe High v. St. Michaels; o Santa Fe Prep v. Capitol soccer game on August 26. Superintendent Announcements Superintendent Boyd introduced new staff member, Alex Salazar, Capitol Funds; Superintendent Boyd reported that this year’s school opening went remarkably smooth; Superintendent Boyd announced that David Perez was in attendance to answer any questions related to transportation; Superintendent Boyd announced that Latifah Phillips has been promoted to Assistant Secretary of Indian Education. IV. Public Forum Ms. Phillips read the ground rules and proceeded to introduce the 7 speakers who as each one was called on to speak. 1 24 Regular Board Meeting - Consent Agenda Charlotte Whitcomb – thanked the board members for their hard work and announced three forums that the Interfaith Coalition is sponsoring in September, October and December. Cindy Geist – as school nurse for SFHS, Ms. Geist praised the health care volunteers that worked at registration and spoke about the vaccination policy. Cynthia Allen – thanked Vice President Price for reading the Teacher’s resignation letter; ‘My profession … no longer exists’ and spoke about standardized testing. V. Consent Agenda Secretary Ducan made motion to accept the Consent Agenda, Member Cashmon seconded the motion to accept the Consent Agenda. Roll call vote was taken. Vice President Price – yes; Secretary Duncan – yes; and member Carrillo – yes; Member Cashmon – yes Motion carried. VI. Union Update Grace Mayer, President of NEA reported the following: Informational visits at the schools will take place; Application has been made for money from PED; Member survey will be conducted; Pleased that the collective bargaining negotiation has reached agreement and is particularly happy regarding the extension of ten days for nurses. VII. Presentations A. Truancy Task Force Update - Mission Attendance – Theresa Baca and Gabe Romero An update was presented by Theresa Baca and Gabe Romero that included: Accomplishments: policy 300 update, addition of truancy prevention coach, policy AR, incentives, and consequences; Review of attendance data indicators; Next Steps: community partnerships, City and School joint resolution, redesign of task force, development of marketing and social media campaign. B. SFPS Digital Learning Plan Update – Dr. James Lujan A brief presentation was given by Dr. James Lujan and staff member Neal regarding the following: Video presentation on what to expect; Reports on infrastructure, classroom equipment and professional development; Courses of study; Video presentation regarding Google Apps for education. VIII. Action A. Second Reading and Adoption of Policies: Policy 200 – Non Discrimination Policy; Policy 330 – Discrimination and Harassment – Students; Policy 331 – Freedom from Bullying, Harassment, and Hazing Member Carrillo made motion to accept Policies 200 – Non Discrimination Policy; Policy 330 – Discrimination and Harassment – Students; Policy 331 – Freedom from Bullying, Harassment. Member Cashmon seconded the motion, all in favor, motion carried. IX. Board Discussion Secretary Duncan requested that committee structure be added to a future agenda; Member Carrillo discussed wages for EAs; 2 25 Regular Board Meeting - Consent Agenda Member Carrillo requested that a resolution be prepared and presented regarding a change of the first day of school to the day after the Labor Day holiday; board members were in support and Member Carrillo will draft the resolution. X.
