In January 2001, Amigas Latinas began a first of its kind
In January 2007, Amigas Latinas began a first of its kind survey of the Latina lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning communities of the Chicago land area. Almost 300 participants completed the survey and respondents ranged in terms of age (from teenagers to seniors), income, geographic location (living in the city or suburbs), ethnicity, sexual identity and behavior, and many other diverse characteristics.* Parenting Nearly 24% are parents by birth, foster parenting, and/or co-parenting. In addition, 5% of women report being grandparents. Citizenship Just over 32% of LBTQQ Latinas were born outside of the US, with 7% stating they came to the US for reasons related to their sexual orientation or gender identity. 18% of LBTQQ Latinas report that they are U.S. citizens, 6% are residents, and 6% are undocumented. Discrimination The majority of respondents reported experiencing multiple forms of discrimination based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity in many environments (societal, institutional, from family members, etc.) The forms of discrimination ranged from offensive remarks to experiencing violent acts perpetrated against them. Violence When asked about exposure to violence, many women reported being abused verbally, physically and/or sexually by other women. This included abuse from family members, partners and strangers. A number of women reported being in a violent relationship with another woman at some point in their lives. Many women also reported being offenders of domestic violence. 20% currently do not 39% reported have a health care having a negative Health provider, and 48% health care 15% anxiety (clinically diagnosed) have not seen a doctor experience, and in at least 6 months. 27% depression 24% identified that 40% suicidal thoughts this negative 20% suicide attempts 20% are not out to their health care 31% alcohol dependency health care providers, and experience added 30% current smokers 25% reported that their to the stress of 5% (15 people) eating disorders doctors reacted negatively their already to disclosure of their 6% (17 people) STDs existing condition. sexual orientation. 48% above average levels of stress The greatest sources of stress are: financial problems (50%); work, school, or career (50%); everyday responsibilities (32%); family problems (31%); and relationship problems (31%) There are many participants that reported being in good physical health (41%) and good mental health (51%). It is important to balance what we have learned from participants about their life experiences, both positive and negative. LBTQ Latinas also identified the positive impact of having access to supportive, culturally competent (physical and mental) health care services and community organizations on their overall well-being. Further data analysis is needed to fully understand that significance of the information obtained by this survey.
