year, we are showcasing the best performing arts, culture and ideas
from Mexico. This multidisciplinary festival features some of the best
performers from various genres and traditions, as well as presentations
from some of the most influential Mexicans in their fields of expertise
around the world.
¡Es un orgullo presentarles la segunda edición de MEX I AM! Este año
mostraremos lo mejor de las artes escénicas, las ideas y la cultura de
México. Este festival multidisciplinario presenta a talentosos artistas

orn in Mexico City in 1958, Arturo
Álvarez-Buylla is today an internationally recognized Mexican neurobiologist.
As a professor of Anatomy and Neurosurgery at the University of California-San Francisco, he currently specializes in the neurogenesis of the brain.
After studying Biomedical Research
at the National Autonomous University
of Mexico (UNAM), he went on to do
a Ph.D. and post-doctoral research at
Rockefeller University.
In 2011 he earned the prestigious
Príncipe de Asturias award and in 2013
he became a member of the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Born into an exiled Republican Asturian family, his father, Ramón Álvarez-Buylla, was also an eminent scientist.
n 2014, Elena Reygadas won the
Veuve Clicquot Award for Best Female
Chef in Latin America; her work reflects
care and passion, along with knowledge
and professional rigor.
Born and raised in Mexico City, Elena Reygada’s professional career.
After earning a degree in English
Literature at the National Autonomous
University of Mexico, she moved to New
York to pursue her true calling at the
French Culinary Institute.
As a young chef, she first made her
mark in some of the most important
kitchens of London.
She developed a deep affection for
classic Italian cuisine at the Locanda Locatelli, under the supervision of the Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli.
Arturo Álvarez-Buylla Roces nació en la
ciudad de México en 1958, se ha dado a
conocer por ser un gran neurobiólogo mexicano, graduado de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México de la carrera de
Investigación Biomédica; después obtuvo
su doctorado en la Universidad de Rockeffeller y un post Doctorado en RU.
De origen asturiano, miembro de una
familia procedente del exilio republicano
español. Su padre, Ramón Álvarez-Buylla,
fue un destacado científico también.
En 2011 ganó el premio Príncipe de
Asturias y en 2013 se vuelve miembro de
American Academy of Arts and Science. Es
profesor de Anatomía y Neurocirugía en la
Universidad de California-San Francisco,
especializado en la neurogénesis del cerebro.
En 2014, Elena Reygadas ganó el Premio
Veuve Clicquot como la Mejor Chef Femenina de América Latina; su trabajo refleja,
además de cuidado y pasión, conocimiento
y rigor.
Nació y creció en la Ciudad de México,
dónde estudió Letras Inglesas en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Al
concluir sus estudios se trasladó a Nueva
York para encontrar su verdadera vocación
en el Instituto Culinario Francés. Reygadas
trabajó en las más importantes cocinas de
Londres, como Locanda Locatelli del chef
italiano Giorgio Locatelli, lo que generó un
gran impacto en la carrera de la joven chef.
Reygadas, quien permaneció cinco años
en este restaurante ubicado al oeste de Londres, desarrolló un profundo afecto por la

Moctezuma is an economist and politician who served as Secretary of the
Interior and Secretary of Social Development during Mexico’s democratic
transition of the 1990s.
Trained as an economist at the
National Autonomous University of
Mexico, he earned a Master’s degree in
Economic Policy from the University of
Cambridge.
He is currently the Executive Chairman of the Azteca Foundation, and
writes regularly for the El Universal and
El Economista newspapers.
ecipient of the 2009 Sundance Documentary Directing Award for her film “El
General,” Almada’s most recent opus “El
Velador” premiered at New Directors/New
Films and the Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight.
Her previous credits include “All Water Has
a Perfect Memory,” an internationally recognized experimental short; and “Al Otro
Lado,” her award-winning debut feature documentary about immigration, drug trafficking and corrido music. Almada’s films have
screened at Documenta13, the Museum of
Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and
the 2008 Whitney Biennial. All three feature documentaries have been broadcast on
the award-winning series POV. Almada has
received the MacArthur, Guggenheim, USA
Artists, Alpert and MacDowell fellowships.

Natalia Almada ganó el Premio en Dirección de Documental en Sundance en 2009 por
su película “El General”. Su película más reciente, “El Velador”, se estrenó durante catorce días
en la Noche de Directores de Cannes, dentro de
la sección de Nuevos Directores/Nuevas Películas. Entre sus trabajos anteriores se encuentran
“Toda el Agua Tiene una Memoria Perfecta”,
una película experimental corta que obtuvo reconocimiento internacional; “Al Otro Lado”, el
documental galardonado que marcó su debut
sobre inmigración, tráfico de drogas y corridos.
Las películas de Almada se han exhibido en
Documenta13, el Museo de Arte Moderno, el
Museo Guggenheim y en 2008 en el Whitney BiAnual. Los tres documentales han formado parte
de la exitosa y reconocida serie POV. Almada
ha recibido becas de MacArthur, Guggenheim,
USA Artists, Alpert y MacDowell. Se graduó con
una maestría en Bellas Artes en fotografía de la
Escuela de Diseño de Rhode Island y actualmente

Esteban Moctezuma Barragán nació en la
Ciudad de México.
Es economista y político mexicano. Se
desempeñó como Secretario de Gobernación
y de Desarrollo Social, ambos cargos
durantes el gobierno de Ernesto Zedillo.
Es egresado de la Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México y Maestría
en Política Económica por la Universidad
de Cambridge.
Actualmente es Presidente Ejecutivo de
Fundación Azteca y es columnista de los
periódicos El Universal y El Economista.

osé Luis Mateos is currently guest
lecturer at Northeastern University and
full time senior research in the Department of Complex Systems at UNAM’s
Institute of Physics. He is ranked at the
highest level within Mexico’s National
System of Researchers.
With a Ph.D. in Physics by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and post-doctoral studies
in Boston, he regularly lectures internationally on several fields of Physics.
Dr. Mateos has received the Humboldt Scholarship and the Jorge Lomnitz
award, among other distinctions. He is
the only Latin American member of the
“C3” Commission on Statistical Physics
at the International Union of Pure and
Applied Physics.
writer, critic and music promoter, Gerardo
Kleinburg was born in Mexico City in 1964.
He won the “Critics Award” as best international critic at the Salzburg Music Festival in 1991,
the first non-European music critic to earn this
distinction.
In 1994 he received the Mozart Medal conferred by the Austrian Embassy in Mexico. That
same year he was appointed “Critic of the Year” by
the magazine Proceso.
He was Artistic Director of the National Opera Company of Mexico for ten years (1991-2001).
He has conducted several television series
about music and opera for Channel 11 and Channel 22, and has given lectures and courses on musical themes in various fora in the country and
abroad.
In November 2004, his first novel, No honrarás
a tu padre was published by Editorial Sudamericana
(Random House / Mondadori). The novel was considered one of the best books of the year by Reforma
and El Universal, and magazines such as Letras Libres, DF, El Huevo and La Tempestad.
From 2008 to 2009 he was Director General
of the Cervantino International Festival.

Escritor, crítico y promotor musical, Gerardo Kleinburg nació en la Ciudad de México en 1964.
Ganó el “Premio de Crítica”, como mejor crítico
internacional en el Festival de Música de Salzburgo,
en 1991, distinción que fue otorgada por primera vez
a un crítico musical no europeo.
En 1994 recibió la Medalla Mozart conferida
por la Embajada de Austria en México. Ese mismo
año fue designado “Crítico del Año” por la revista
Proceso.
Fue Director Artístico de la Compañía Nacional
de Ópera de México durante diez años (1991-2001).
Há conducido diversas series televisivas vinculadas con la música de concierto y la ópera, tanto en
el Canal 11 como en el Canal 22, y ha impartido
conferencias y cursos sobre temas musicales en diversos
foros del país y del extranjero.
En noviembre de 2004 publicó su primera novela, No honrarás a tu padre, bajo el sello de Editorial
Sudamericana (Random House/Mondadori), misma
que fue considerada como uno de los mejores libros

Mateos Trigos
José Luis Mateos es Doctor en Ciencias (Física) por la UNAM. Realizó una estancia
postdoctoral en Boston, trabajando como
Profesor invitado por la Universidad Northeastern.
Actualmente es investigador de tiempo completo en el Departamento de Sistemas Complejos del Instituto de Física
de la UNAM. Tiene el nivel más alto en
el Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. Se
ha presentado en conferencias a nivel internacional debido a las diversas líneas de
estudio en las que se ha visto involucrado.
El Doctor Mateos ha recibido prestigiosos premios tales como Humboldt Scholarship y Jorge Lomnitz. Es miembro de la
Comisión “C3” de Física Estadística de la
IUPAP, siendo el único latinoamericano en
dicha comisión.

orge Soto was born in Mexico City,
earned a degree in Electrical Engineering
from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM),
and has pursued studies at Columbia
University.
In his early 30s, he is an international recognized tech entrepreneur.
He is co-founder and CTO of Miroculus, a technological system dedicated
to research and development in molecular biology, with potential applications
in the early detection of cancer and other
metabolic diseases that could dramatically decrease the cost of treatment.
iovanni Piacentini started playing
classical guitar when he was nine. Cutting across genres, he has offered solo
recitals and is now focused on musical
composition at the Berklee College of
Music in Boston.
He started off composing instrumental music for television and audiovisual media, and was invited by famous
composer Richard Danielpour to study
musical composition at the Manhattan
School of Music in New York.
His music has been performed by
various well known ensembles and soloists in he US and Mexico.

y desarrollo de biología molecular, que
desarrollo un sistema con el que se puede
lograr una detección temprana del cáncer
y algunas otras enfermedades metabólicas,
reduciendo significativamente el costo de
los sistemas actuales hasta cincuenta veces.
Giovanni Piacentini comenzó a tocar la
guitarra clásica a los nueve años de edad.
Ha dado varios recitales como solista e
incursionado en diversos géneros. Decide
dedicarse a la composición y estudia en la
Berklee College of Music de Boston. Empieza a escribir música instrumental de
concierto, para televisión y medios audiovisuales. Es invitado por el célebre compositor Norteamericano Richard Danielpour
a hacer una maestría en composición en
la Manhattan School of Music de Nueva
York. Su música ha sido interpretada por
varios ensambles y solistas reconocidos en

San Francisco Ballet. He began his Classical Ballet studies at the age of 7 taught
by his father, Héctor Hernández Valle.
After just a few months of training he
showed a surprising technical ability and
intelligence, and started performing as
a guest dancer at the festivals of various dance schools, including the Ballet
Academy of London, the Doris Topete
Ballet Academy, the Ballet School in
Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, the Cabañas
Cultural Institute and the 21st Century
Art Centre in Quintana Roo, with presentations in Cancún and Chetumal.

Esteban es bailarín del San Francisco Ballet. Inició sus estudios de Ballet Clásico
con su padre, el Maestro Héctor Hernández Valle, a la edad de 7 años. A los pocos
meses de trabajo, mostró una capacidad
técnica sorprendente y una inteligencia especial para esta actividad.
Con menos de un año de entrenamiento, comenzó a participar como invitado en
festivales de diversas escuelas particulares,
tales como la Academia de Ballet de Londres, la Academia de Ballet Doris Topete,
la Escuela de Ballet en Lagos de Moreno,
Jalisco, el Instituto Cultural Cabañas y el
Centro de Arte Siglo XXI de Quintana
Roo, donde intervino dentro de diversas
funciones en Cancún y Chetumal.

e was born on April 30th, 1990 in
Guadalajara, Jalisco.
He started his training when he was 9
years old with his father, teacher Hector Hernandez Valle. He has obtained scholarships
from CONACULTA, INBA and FONCAM, and also to study at the best ballet
schools of the world.
He received the Youth National Prize
when he was 13 years old, the youngest artist
to receive this recognition. He was awarded
the Youth State Prize in 2009 in Jalisco. He
was named Mexico’s Tourist Ambassador
in 2008 and 2011. He was included in the
Secretariat of Public Education books as an
exemplary young Mexican in art and culture.
Expansion’s Quien magazine recognized him
as one of the 50 most transcendent Mexicans
in 2013.
He has won 13 gold medals in international ballet competitions in Europe, United
States of America and Latin America.
When he was 14 years old, he was requested as a special artist for the ballet gala
“Dance Giants”, where he shared the stage
with important dancers. He has been invited to international ballet galas, performing
shows in Russia, Japan, China, Brazil, South
Africa, Malaysia and Mexico.
He has been a member and has done solos at ATB II in New York and at the San
Francisco Ballet. He participated in the prestigious ballet stars tour in Europe, dancing
in the 5 continents. In 2014, he was part of
the closing ceremony of the ballet gala of the
Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
In February 2015, he became the first
Mexican artist of the Russian ballet at Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersbourg. In April
of 2015 he joined as a Principal Dancer to
the English National Ballet to participate in
the World Tour of the company.

Estatal a la Juventud en 2009 en Jalisco. Fue
nombrado Embajador de Turismo por México
en el 2008 y en el 2011. Fue incluido en los
libros de la Secretaria de Educación Pública
como un joven mexicano ejemplar en el arte
y cultura. Fue reconocido la revista Quien del
grupo Expansión como uno de los 50 Mexicanos
más trascendentes del 2013.
Ha ganado 13 medallas de oro en competencias internacionales de ballet en Europa,
Estados Unidos y América Latina. Fue invitado
como artista especial a los 14 años a la gala de
ballet “Los Gigantes de la Danza”, en donde
compartió el escenario con grandes figuras de
la danza. Ha sido artista invitado en galas de
ballet internacionales, presentándose en países
como Rusia, Japón, China, Brasil, Sudáfrica,
Malasia y México.
Ha sido miembro y solista en ABT II en
Nueva York y en San Francisco Ballet. Participo en la prestigiosa gira de estrellas del ballet
en Europa, bailando en los 5 continentes. En
2014, clausuró la gala de ballet en los juegos
olímpicos en Sochi, Rusia.
En febrero de 2015 se convirtió en el primer bailarín mexicano del teatro del ballet
ruso Mariinsky Theatre en San Petersburgo. En
abril del 2015 se unió como artista principal al
English National Ballet para participar en su
gira internacional.

recognized as winner of the Licia Albanese
Puccini Foundation International Vocal
Competition. He is currently a student at the
Conservatory of Music in San Francisco.
He is described by the Mexican critics as
a born tenor, expressive and passionate for his
performances in La Bohème, Don Otavvio,
Romeo and Juliet, Julian Zarzuela, among
others.
He received the Placido Domingo scholarship given by SIMAV, recognizing him as
one of the younger fellows.

Rojas
Mario Rojas, tenor mexicano reconocido
por ser ganador del concurso Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation International vocal
Competition, actualmente estudiante del
conservatorio de música de San Francisco.
Ha sido calificado por la crítica mexicana como un tenor nato, expresivo y
apasionado por sus interpretaciones en La
Bohème, Don Otavvio, Romeo y Julieta,
Julián Zarzuela, entre otros.
Otro de los premios a los que ha sido
acreedor fue la beca Plácido Domingo por
la SIMAV, convirtiéndolo en uno de los becarios más jóvenes.

urgita was born in Russia in 1986, and graduated from the National M.K. Ciurlioins School of
Arts in Vilnius, Lithuania. She also studied at the
Munich International Ballet Academy, under the
directorship of Konstanze Vernon.
Jurgita joined the Royal Swedish Ballet in
2005 and was promoted as Principal Dancer in
2007, and later became Principal Ballerina of the

uan Yuan Tan was born in Shanghai, China, and
trained at Shanghai Dancing School and Stuttgart’s John
Cranko School. She joined San Francisco Ballet as a soloist in
1995 and was promoted to principal dancer in 1997.

Tan received the Excellence Award from The Committee
of 100, an elite organization of distinguished Chinese Americans, in 2010. She was named an honorary chair of the Asian
Art Museum’s Shanghai Gala in 2010 and a “Hero of Asia”
in the Asian edition of Time magazine in October 2004. She
was features in an international GAP ad campaign in 2012
and Vogue magazine in April 2013. She received The Bud
magazine City of Heart award in Shanghai in 2007 and was
invited to the White House in 1999. She won a gold medal
and the Nijinsky Award at the 1st Japan International Ballet
and Modern Dance Competition in 1993 and gold medal at
the 5th International Ballet Competition in Paris in 1992.

French Revolution.
He is considered by Carlos Montemayor, as one of the three great painters
of Guanajuato, along with Diego Rivera
and Chávez Morado.

Publica su trabajo en El Universal,
uno de los diarios mexicanos más prestigiosos; es uno de los autores más conocidos en

uestros Silencios” is a sculptoric
proposal of monumentary proportions,
which has been conceived as a touring
exhibit.
This exhibition is composed by 10
great format bronze-cast busts and a
“tactile” cube, especially designed for the
visually impaired audience.
All sculptures are muted using a plate
showing different inscriptions, which are
replicated on their chests and backs.
The faces are sculpted with human
features denoting race, such as white,
black, Asian, Arabic and Indian; this allows most of the public the opportunity
to identify themselves with the sculptures.
The exhibition stands out due to its
monumental size, number of elements
and the creative concept that promotes
introspection about the importance of
freedom of speech among the public.

Nuestros silencios es una propuesta escultórica que cuenta con proporciones monumentales, siendo concebida como una exposición
itinerante.
Esta exposición está compuesta por 10
grandes bustos de bronce de fundición y un
cubo táctil, diseñados especialmente para los
discapacitados visuales de la audiencia.
Las esculturas están silenciadas mediante
una placa que muestra diferentes inscripciones, que se replican en el pecho y la espalda.
Las caras están esculpidas con rasgos humanos
que denota la raza, como el blanco, negro,
asiático, árabe e indio. Esto permitirá a la
mayoría del público identificarse con la obra.
La exposición destaca por su tamaño monumental, el número de elementos y el concepto creativo que promueve la introspección
acerca de la importancia de la libertad de
expresión entre el público.
ivelino was born in San Jose de Gracia, Jalisco on May 25, 1973. This artist
has experimented with the most diverse
materials, forms and themes for over 15
years.
He has recently ventured into the
field of public interventions. During this
time, in his very peculiar works, Rivelino
has accomplished an interaction between
quite dissimilar materials such as clay,
bronze, steel and silver, which range from
small formats to the monumental ones.
The sculptor is chiefly self-taught,
despite his education from the School of
Ceramics from the National Institute of
Fine Arts (INBA).

Born in Michoacan, Mexico, Felipe Castañeda enrolled in art school in 1958 and became
the assistant for world renowned sculptor,
Francisco Zúñiga.
Inspired by Pre-Colombian art, his
sculptures focused on the female form; using
marble, onyx, and bronze, to depict a variety
of moods and positions.

The renowned sculptor and printmaker,
Francisco Zúñiga learned the art of sculpting
from his father, while growing up in Costa
Rica in the 1920s.
After relocating to Mexico City, Zúñiga
studied Pre-Colombian art at La Esmeralda, the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking. He became a faculty
member at La Esmeralda and trained many
outstanding sculptors, including Castaneda
and Amaya.

padre viviendo en Costa Rica en la década de

Born in Mexico City, Jose Luis Cuevas enrolled at the age of ten in La Esmeralda, the
National School of Painting, Sculpture and
Printmaking. During the 1950s, he joined
an outspoken political group, called “Generación de la Ruptura (The Breakaway Generation),” opposed to the Muralism Art Movement sponsored by the Mexican Revolution
government. Cuevas’s artwork remains controversial for challenging Mexican nationalism through his portrayal of human suffering
through disfigured human forms.
Nacido en la Ciudad de México, José Luis Cuevas se matriculó en la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado, La Esmeralda, a la
edad de diez años. Durante la década de 1950
se unió a un grupo abiertamente político llamado “ Generación de la Ruptura (La Generación
Breakaway)”, opuesto al Movimiento de Muralismo Artístico patrocinado por el gobierno
de la revolución mexicana. Las obras de arte

Science in Surrealism marks the first
exhibition devoted to Surrealist artists
interested in investigating the scientific
advances of the first half of the twentieth
century, especially those related to quantum physics and the Theory of Relativity.
The exhibition features seminal
paintings and drawings that demonstrate the ways these artists responded
to the scientific writing and thinking of
their time.
Science in Surrealism will be accompanied by a 70 page, hardbound catalog,
featuring an essay by scholar Gavin Parkinsion.

exposición dedicada a artistas surrealistas

The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina
District of San Francisco, California, is
a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific
Exposition in order to exhibit works of
art. One of only a few surviving structures from the Exposition, it is the only
one still situated on its original site. It
was rebuilt in 1965, and renovation of
the lagoon, walkways, and a seismic retrofit were completed in early 2009.

The idea of an association of Mexican-American wine producers was revived in May 2010 during an informal
meeting of vintners, who gathered in the
courtyard of a colonial era hotel in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. The vintners
from Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley
were in Morelia to pour their wines at the
Michoacán State Fair on the invitation
from the Governor of Michoacán, and at
the suggestion of Rolando Herrera of Mi
Sueño Winery. Rolando had been invited
personally by the Governor and suggested
that the invitation be extended to other
Mexican wine producers from California.
