This feast is a day where we specially recognize the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. We believe so strongly that the bread has changed into the Body of Christ that we expose it in a chapel for adoration to meditate on how Christ is working in our lives. We take it outside the Church doors in procession to show the world our belief in this gift instituted by Christ. This will be the twelfth year in a row that we as a parish have held this procession. This procession is treated with solemnity and dignity. The Body of Christ is placed in a monstrance and incensed. We are blessed as the sign of the cross is made with the Eucharist. Then the Eucharist is processed around the church and out the Fifth Avenue doors with everyone who wishes to participate following behind. We will go in procession singing songs of praise around the neighborhood, then back to St. Stephen’s for Benediction. This will last about half an hour. The procession will take place at the end of the 10:30 a.m. Mass. We encourage everyone to come and participate in this great celebration of our faith. ! ! Stop in the Gathering Place TODAY to Sign Up for the Catholic Advocacy Network’s Email Updates From conception to natural death, we Catholics are called to protect life and to promote dignity and respect for all human beings. You are invited and have the opportunity to register for the statewide Minnesota Catholic Conference (MCC) Catholic Advocacy Network, which is a faithful, compassionate, moral voice for life, dignity, and justice in our state. If you registered, thank you! We encourage you to take advantage of the many advocacy resources and Catholic Social Teaching tools that the network provides, and we hope that you will be diligent in responding to the occasional e-mails that the network will send asking you to help us “take action” on an important social or public policy issue. If you missed signing up today, you can still register online at MCC’s website: www.mncc.org. MCC is the public policy voice for the six Minnesota Catholic dioceses. “Politics, according to the Social Doctrine of the Church, is one of the highest forms of charity, because it serves the common good.” - Pope Francis Pastor’s Page | Fr. Jack Long Go and Make Disciples of All Nations (Mt 28:19) Parish Directory Guest Writer Fr. Joe Kuharski PARISH OFFICE 763-421-2471 These final days of Easter, with the celebration of the Ascension and Pentecost, are a good time for each one of us to ask ourselves the rather challenging question: how we are doing with the Great Commission Jesus gave us before he departed from this earth: “Go and make disciples of all nations”? (Mt 28:19) Many of us, I know, grew up with an understanding that our role in the Church was basically to pray, pay, and obey, but this, of course, is not the biblical vision of discipleship and is not in keeping with our baptismal dignity. Rather, the Holy Spirit sends us all out on mission by virtue of our baptism, and then strengthens us in a particular way to spread and defend the faith by the sacrament of Confirmation, just as the Apostles were strengthened by that first Confirmation, Pentecost. I’ve been impressed by several in our parish who have come to me about their joys in bringing the good news to others who have turned away from their faith and who, in fact, originally gave me the idea for the series on evangelization I have been leading after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. But we might ask: is this just a special task for the few, or is it for each one of us? Are we really called to actually speak about our faith or just to be a good example? One after another, each of the recent Popes have exhorted all the baptized to take up the mission of proclaiming the Gospel, not just in actions but in words as well. Pope Paul VI, in Evangelii Nuntiandi, challenges each one of us to this mission: “Here lies the test of truth…it is unthinkable that a person should accept the Word and give himself to the Kingdom without becoming a person who bears witness to it and proclaims it in his turn.” (EN #24) Has the “unthinkable” become commonplace among most Catholics? Pope Francis has similar words in Evangelii Gaudium, and there he uses a term I’ve come to love to describe the role of all the baptized in evangelization, that of “missionary disciples.” He further says, “All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization.” (EG #120) But what about “preaching by our lives”? No doubt, it is absolutely essential that we live good, virtuous lives, but this can often be used as an excuse not to actually speak about the Lord or the good news. One’s life should give credibility and power to this evangelical message, but it can never be substituted for it. Faith has always come through hearing. But the sad truth is that, as Catholics, we have gotten used to a norm of silence about Jesus, about our relationship with God, and about the good news of the Gospel. Consider this perspective from a non-Catholic who wrote about her own experience in a Catholic parish: “What troubles me is: An unchurched teen shows up, in a small parish in a small town, week after week, clearly interested in the Mass, with a young man who has been active in the parish since he could walk, and no one wants to tell her the Good News. It would have taken next to nothing. No one said, here, read this, tell me what you think. No one asked me to come to any kind of lecture or meeting, no one prayed with us or said they were praying for us. It’s not that I’m so special. It’s just that…what were they doing? Why didn’t they think this was important to do?” (Story taken from Forming Intentional Disciples, 189) Now is our time as Catholics to break the silence! In our homes, our social settings, and even in our parish. We have to be honest with ourselves. When was the last time we made an effort to talk to others about Jesus or about our faith? Do we ever use the name of Jesus in public or at least to allow ourselves to be seen praying in public? If not, why not? Besides being part of our baptismal mission, I think you’ll find, as I have, that even small efforts in evangelization are exciting and life-giving. 2 WORSHIP Director, Bernie Leach 763-712-7435 Associate, Amanda Lutes 763-712-7458 Associate/School Liturgy Coordinator, Terri Renner 763-712-7459 FAITH FORMATION Director and Adult Formation, Katie Gebhard 763-712-7439 Early Childhood (Sun. Bowing in Reverence as the Creed is Recited Within the text of the Creed in the Roman Missal there is an instruction which states “At the words that follow, up to and including and became man, all bow.” ‘And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man’ are the exact words in the text that this instruction precedes. Bowing is an expression of reverence and honor. The bow while these words of the Creed are spoken honors God for becoming human in Christ. School Second Grade Moms and Muffins Enroll with Confidence Second graders had an opportunity to celebrate their moms for Mother's Day by inviting them into the school for a special event called Moms and Muffins on Friday, May 6. From pre-school through eighth grade, St. Stephen’s School offers a quality faith-based Catholic Education. Come join our family of believers. All are welcome! To enroll, please call the school office at 763-421-3236. At this fun celebration, second graders shared muffins, juice, and coffee with their moms as well as a vase with their handprint on it and some handcrafted flowers inside. Both Mrs. Burke's class and Ms. Furness' class performed a short Reader's Theater that was all about moms and how special they are to us. It was such a gift to look into the crowd to see the smiling faces of all the moms who care so much about their children and to see the second graders proudly share everything they've worked on so diligently. Thank you to all of the moms who came to celebrate, we appreciate you so much! Mission Statement St. Stephen’s Catholic School is a caring Christian community that nourishes spiritual development and academic excellence. Philosophy St. Stephen’s Catholic School integrates faith with academics to prepare students to make solid Christian choices. It is an accredited, private school, comprised of pre-school, elementary, and middle school levels. Greetings from Preschool! Mrs. Krisity Lieder, Preschool Teacher All four preschool classes celebrated Grandparent's Night May 5. We had a wonderful turnout of over 150 guests! Grandparents and students enjoyed cookies and milk, making bracelets and necklaces and doing puzzles. The students put on a short show by saying the prayers that they know and singing "Jesus Loves Me" with sign language. We also had a special guest balloon artist clown keeping everyone entertained! What a blessing to have so many families take part in this wonderful event! Faith: As a vital part of the parish community, we educate students in a Catholic atmosphere enriched by the Gospel messages of peace and justice. The spiritual development of students is the primary goal. The school recognizes that a person's faith is formed by living out that faith in community through prayer, worship, service and study; and grounded in our Catholic tradition. Academics: In partnership with their family, each student is encouraged and directed to reach his or her potential. Our academic program emphasizes mastery of the basics, academic excellence, and a variety of extracurricular activities. The school prepares students to be fully equipped for their next level of academic achievement. Community: The school seeks to provide a safe and trusting learning environment where each student is valued and challenged to grow spiritually, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. www.ststephenschool.org 5 Pastoral Care Reflection for Trinity Sunday Please Pray for... Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer There is a time that we cannot remember Really! There is a time when time was not as we speak of it. Can we allow our imaginations to fall back to before? The Book of Proverbs says of Wisdom that Wisdom was poured forth before the earth when there were no depths, no fountains or springs of water, before mountains were settled into place, before hills, before the first clods of the world. Wisdom was there when God established the heavens. Wisdom was there as a craftsman. Wisdom played before God. Having created humankind God poured out love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Jesus wants to tell us so much. He sends the Holy Spirit to share with us what he has from his Father. They, the Three in One, want to include us by the outpouring of their love into our hearts. Let us fall back to before, into the love of God, into the beginnings of creation, where we are called to play. We pray, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. www.ststephenchurch.org/service/pastoral_care 6 Susie Abbott Michael Abbott Lynn Aker Jo Alexander Marie Amberg Rosie Ancheta Casanova Antonia Geoff Arseneau Donna Bajtosh Rose Bartholomew Pat Bednarczyk Bruce Berg Matt Berg Sue Berg Harlen Beyer Judy Biermaier Anne Blue Jeffery Blue Wayne Blue James Boyce Marjorie Bragelman Don Breyen Julie Bright Kenneth Bright Sheila Brisbin Phil Brunt Deborah Burkhardt-Cotter Harold Burkhardt Jr. Theresa Burns Dorothy Carver Judy Chouinard Shane Cotter Jr. Linda Czech Bernice Davich Phyllis Day Aeryn DeKrey Samantha Rose DeLapp Rosemary Donnette Barb Dryden Jami Ducharme Richard Duclos Roslyn Duclos Jeff Eickhoff Pam Eklund Rachel Aykens Elliot Sr. Catherine Fiegen Liam Fields Theresa Filkins Richard Fillmore Ron Flor Jeff Fox Paul Gammelgaard John Gobernatz Sherry Goldenstein Mila Gonser-McGill Lynn Gravett Cullen Groff Diane Gruber Gloria Guimont Natalie Guimont Guthrie Family Stephanie Hage Don Haller Greg Harm Cody Harmon Sandra Hartmann Khloe Hartnett Mary Heie J.C. and E.L.P. No hubiera costado nada. Nadie me invitó a ninguna lectura o junta. Y si no, ¿Por qué no? !
