A MESSAGE FROM THE POPE
WORKING ON SUNDAY
Dear brothers and sisters of the world of work,
I thank you for your welcome. Thank you for having shared
with me the reality that you live, the struggles and
hopes. The Rector has taken a phrase that I once said: that
our God is a God of surprises. It 's true, every day there is
one, such is our Father. But he said something else about
God, that I will now take: God that breaks the mold. And if
we don't have the courage to break the mold, we will never
go forward because our God impels us to do this, to be
creative about the future.
My visit to Molise begins from this encounter with the world
of work, but the place in which we find ourselves is the
university. And this is significant: it expresses the importance
of research and training for responding to new and complex
questions that the current economic crisis poses, locally, nationally and internationally. We heard the testimony a little
while ago of a young farmer with his choice to do a degree course in agriculture and to work on the land "by vocation". A
good training program does not offer easy solutions, but it helps to have a more open and creative view to better exploit
the area's resources.
I fully agree with what has been said about "safeguarding" the earth, so that it bear fruit without being "exploited". This is
one of the greatest challenges of our time: converting ourselves to a development that respects creation. In America, my
homeland, I see many forests, which have been stripped, [areas] that become land that cannot be cultivated, that cannot
give life. This is our sin: we exploit the earth and do not let it give us what it harbors within, with the help of our
cultivation.
Another challenge has emerged from the voice of the working mom, who also spoke on behalf of her family: her husband,
the young child and the child in the womb. Hers is a plea for work and at the same time for the family. Thank you for this
testimony! In fact, this is the time to try to reconcile work with family life.
I'll tell you one thing: I hear confessions; not so much now as I did in the other dioceses. When a young mom or a dad
comes to me, I ask: 'How many children do you have?' and I have another question,: 'Tell me, do you play with your
children?' Most respond: ‘Pardon Father?' - 'Yes, yes: do you play? Do you waste time with your kids?' We are losing this
knowledge, this wisdom of how to play with our kids. The economic situation compels us to this, to lose this. Please waste
time with your children! On Sunday: she referred to Sunday as the family day, to spend time together.
This is a "critical" point, a point that allows us to discern, to assess the quality of the human economic system in which we
find ourselves. And within this context is the issue of Sunday working, which affects not only believers but everyone as an
ethical choice. The question is: to what do we want to give priority? The work-free Sunday - with the exception of
necessary services - is to say that the priority is not economic but human, to gratuity, to non-commercial relations but
family, friends, for believers to be in relation with God and with the community. Perhaps it is time to ask whether to work
on Sundays is a true freedom.
Dear friends, today I would like to add my voice to that of many workers and employers of this region in asking that it can
be implemented here as a "labour pact." I saw that in Molise you are trying to respond to the tragedy of unemployment
by joining forces in a constructive way. Many jobs could be recovered through an agreed strategy with the national
authorities, a "labour pact" that knows how to seize the opportunities offered by national and European norms. I
encourage you to go ahead on this road, which can lead to good results here as well as in other regions.
Finally, I would like to tell you that I was struck by the fact that you have given me a painting that really represents
"maternity". Motherhood involves labour, but the labour of childbirth is oriented to life, is full of hope. So not only do I
thank you for this gift, but I thank you even more for the testimony which it contains: that of a hopeful labour. Thank you!
Pope Francis, Address at the University at Campobasso, 5 July 2014
NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
BY: POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II
ENCYCLICAL LETTER
VERITATIS SPLENDOR
ADDRESSED BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF
POPE JOHN PAUL II TO ALL THE BISHOPS OF THE
CATHOLIC CHURCH REGARDING CERTAIN FUNDAMENTAL
QUESTIONS OF THE CHURCH'S MORAL TEACHING
(Continued from the 1 June Sunday Bulletin)
The purpose of the present Encyclical
“… 4. At all times, but particularly in the last two centuries, the Popes, whether individually or together with
the College of Bishops, have developed and proposed a moral teaching regarding the many different spheres
of human life. In Christ's name and with his authority they have exhorted, passed judgment and explained. In
their efforts on behalf of humanity, in fidelity to their mission, they have confirmed, supported and consoled.
With the guarantee of assistance from the Spirit of truth they have contributed to a better understanding of
moral demands in the areas of human sexuality, the family, and social, economic and political life. In the
tradition of the Church and in the history of humanity, their teaching represents a constant deepening of
knowledge with regard to morality.8
Today, however, it seems necessary to reflect on the whole of the Church's moral teaching, with the precise
goal of recalling certain fundamental truths of Catholic doctrine which, in the present circumstances, risk
being distorted or denied. In fact, a new situation has come about within the Christian community itself, which
has experienced the spread of numerous doubts and objections of a human and psychological, social and
cultural, religious and even properly theological nature, with regard to the Church's moral teachings. It is no
longer a matter of limited and occasional dissent, but of an overall and systematic calling into question of
traditional moral doctrine, on the basis of certain anthropological and ethical presuppositions. At the root of
these presuppositions is the more or less obvious influence of currents of thought which end by detaching
human freedom from its essential and constitutive relationship to truth. Thus the traditional doctrine
regarding the natural law, and the universality and the permanent validity of its precepts, is rejected; certain
of the Church's moral teachings are found simply unacceptable; and the Magisterium itself is considered
capable of intervening in matters of morality only in order to "exhort consciences" and to "propose values", in
the light of which each individual will independently make his or her decisions and life choices.
In particular, note should be taken of the lack of harmony between the traditional response of the Church and
certain theological positions, encountered even in Seminaries and in Faculties of Theology, with regard to
questions of the greatest importance for the Church and for the life of faith of Christians, as well as for the life
of society itself. In particular, the question is asked: do the commandments of God, which are written on the
human heart and are part of the Covenant, really have the capacity to clarify the daily decisions of individuals
and entire societies? Is it possible to obey God and thus love God and neighbour, without respecting these
commandments in all circumstances? Also, an opinion is frequently heard which questions the intrinsic and
unbreakable bond between faith and morality, as if membership in the Church and her internal unity were to
be decided on the basis of faith alone, while in the sphere of morality a pluralism of opinions and of kinds of
behaviour could be tolerated, these being left to the judgment of the individual subjective conscience or to
the diversity of social and cultural contexts.

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
BY: POPE SAINT JOHN XXIII
AD PETRI CATHEDRAM
ENCYCLICAL OF POPE JOHN XXIII
ON TRUTH, UNITY AND PEACE, IN A SPIRIT OF CHARITY
29 June 1959
(The full text of Ad Petri Cathedram can be found at:
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_xxiii/encyclicals/documents)
(Continued from the 1 June Sunday Bulletin)
Unity Among Nations
30. Only if we desire peace, as we should, instead of war, and only if we
all aspire sincerely to fraternal harmony among nations, shall it come to
pass that public affairs and public questions are correctly understood
and settled to the satisfaction of all. Then shall international
conferences seek and reach decisions conducive to the longed-for unity
of the whole human family. In the enjoyment of that unity, individual
nations will see that their right to liberty is not subject to another's
whims but is fully secure.
31. Those who oppress others and strip them of their due liberty can
contribute nothing to the attainment of this unity.
32. The mind of Our predecessor, Leo XIII, squares perfectly with this
view: "Nothing is better suited than Christian virtue, and especially
justice, to check ambition, covetousness, and envy which are the chief
causes of war." (10)
33. But if men do not pursue this fraternal unity, based on the precepts of justice and nurtured by charity,
then human affairs will remain in serious peril. This is why wise men grieve and lament; they are uncertain
whether we are heading for sincere, true, and firm peace, or are rushing in complete blindness into the fires of
a new and terrible war.
34. We say "in complete blindness," for if—God forbid!—another war should break out, nothing but
devastating destruction and total ruin await both victor and vanquished. The monstrous weapons our age has
devised will see to that!
35. We ask all men, but particularly rulers of nations, to weigh these considerations prudently and seriously in
the presence of God our protector. May they enter with a will upon those paths which will lead to the unity
that is so badly needed. This harmonious unity will be restored when hearts are at peace, when the rights of
all are guaranteed, and when there has dawned that liberty due everywhere to individual citizens, to the state,
and to the Church.

This past week marked the conclusion of our home visits, part of our welcome to the young
men in our incoming fifth grade class. Mr. Kevin Rall, Dean of Student Life, and Brother
Thomas, Executive Director, participated in this annual activity. Sixteen students have been
accepted into our thirteenth class. The group includes residents from Freeport, Roosevelt,
Hempstead, Elmont, and Valley Stream.
These visits are intended to initiate a strong connection between home and school for each student. A gracious
welcome is always extended and the time is used to present the school supplies list, discuss the summer reading
assignment, explain September’s trip to the farm in Vermont, deliver the calendar for the upcoming academic
year, and answer questions the youngster and/or his parent(s) have about the transition to The De La Salle
School. It is encouraging to witness the enthusiasm associated with the new adventure that awaits the young
man!

FAITH AND GOVERNMENT
DECLARATION ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
DIGNITATIS HUMANAE
ON THE RIGHT OF THE PERSON AND OF COMMUNITIES
TO SOCIAL AND CIVIL FREEDOM IN MATTERS RELIGIOUS
PROMULGATED BY HIS HOLINESS POPE PAUL VI
ON 7 DECEMBER 1965
(Continued from 13 July 2014 Sunday Bulletin)
14. In order to be faithful to the divine command, "teach all nations" (Matt. 28:1920), the Catholic Church must work with all urgency and concern "that the word of
God be spread abroad and glorified" (2 Thess. 3:1). Hence the Church earnestly begs
of its children that, "first of all, supplications, prayers, petitions, acts of thanksgiving
be made for all men.... For this is good and agreeable in the sight of God our Savior,
who wills that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Tim.
2:1-4). In the formation of their consciences, the Christian faithful ought carefully to
attend to the sacred and certain doctrine of the Church.(35) For the Church is, by
the will of Christ, the teacher of the truth. It is her duty to give utterance to, and
authoritatively to teach, that truth which is Christ Himself, and also to declare and
confirm by her authority those principles of the moral order which have their origins
in human nature itself. Furthermore, let Christians walk in wisdom in the face of
those outside, "in the Holy Spirit, in unaffected love, in the word of truth" (2 Cor.
6:6-7), and let them be about their task of spreading the light of life with all
confidence(36) and apostolic courage, even to the shedding of their blood.
The disciple is bound by a grave obligation toward Christ, his Master, ever more fully to understand the truth
received from Him, faithfully to proclaim it, and vigorously to defend it, never-be it understood-having recourse to
means that are incompatible with the spirit of the Gospel. At the same time, the charity of Christ urges him to love
and have prudence and patience in his dealings with those who are in error or in ignorance with regard to the
faith.(37) All is to be taken into account-the Christian duty to Christ, the life-giving word which must be proclaimed,
the rights of the human person, and the measure of grace granted by God through Christ to men who are invited
freely to accept and profess the faith.
15. The fact is that men of the present day want to be able freely to profess their religion in private and in public.
Indeed, religious freedom has already been declared to be a civil right in most constitutions, and it is solemnly
recognized in international documents.(38) The further fact is that forms of government still exist under which,
even though freedom of religious worship receives constitutional recognition, the powers of government are
engaged in the effort to deter citizens from the profession of religion and to make life very difficult and dangerous
for religious communities.
This council greets with joy the first of these two facts as among the signs of the times. With sorrow, however, it
denounces the other fact, as only to be deplored. The council exhorts Catholics, and it directs a plea to all men,
most carefully to consider how greatly necessary religious freedom is, especially in the present condition of the
human family. All nations are coming into even closer unity. Men of different cultures and religions are being
brought together in closer relationships. There is a growing consciousness of the personal responsibility that every
man has. All this is evident. Consequently, in order that relationships of peace and harmony be established and
maintained within the whole of mankind, it is necessary that religious freedom be everywhere provided with an
effective constitutional guarantee and that respect be shown for the high duty and right of man freely to lead his
religious life in society.
May the God and Father of all grant that the human family, through careful observance of the principle of religious
freedom in society, may be brought by the grace of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to the sublime and
unending and "glorious freedom of the sons of God" (Rom. 8:21).

PLEASE PRAY FOR:
“I will open my mouth in parables, I will
announce what has lain hidden from the
foundation of the world” (See Matthew
13:24-43). The Scriptures today tell us
that what laid hidden since creation has
been revealed to us. Jesus calls us to
preach and teach the Word of God, no so
much by what we say, but by what we do
and above all, by what we are! In today’s
parables there is a constant element
about the message of the Kingdom. It is
hidden and it grows! The wheat hidden among the weeds
grows, the mustard seed hidden in the ground grows, and the
yeast hidden in the batch makes it grow. How do we hide God’s
message. Let us follow the example of Mary the Most Holy
Mother of God. The Gospels tell us that she kept God’s
message hidden in her heart. She memorized what God had
told her and she meditated on it. Above all, she was obedient
to the Message. We can be sure that if we imitate this example
God will make His message grow in us. What is more, we too
will grow in all the Christian qualities that the Lord and those
around us appreciates so much and for which we praise His Holy
Name. The final product is that the Kingdom of God will
continue to grow. All for the glory of God!

FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL
SAINT JAMES

Almighty ever-living God,
Who consecrated the first fruits of Your Apostles

grant, we pray, that Your Church may be strengthened
by his confession of faith
and constantly sustained by his protection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

FAITH AND A WORD FROM OUR SEMINARIAN JAMES HANSEN
One of the greatest parts of being able to study for the Priesthood in Rome is the Saints! As a young boy in grammar
school at Saint Catherine of Sienna Parish in Franklin Square, I remember gazing at the beautiful stained glass
windows that adorn the Church. The windows depict scenes from the life of Saint Catherine of Siena. These
windows tell her story from the time she was a young girl fervently praying that her father would allow her to enter
religious life, all the way to Avignon,
France where Catherine was a significant
figure in returning the papacy from
France back to Rome. As a boy, these
windows
always
captured
my
imagination but I failed to realize that
the windows told the story of a historical
and real person! Fast-forward to more
than ten years later as a 23-year-old
seminarian walking to the University on
the streets of Rome. Stopping into
different churches as I make my way, I
realized that one of the first churches I
entered holds the relics of Saint Agnes,
the patroness of our Diocese! I stopped
into another Church, which contains the
relics of Saint James the Lesser, my
patron Saint!
I walked again into
another church and was immediately
awestruck by something. Near the front
of the church, under the Altar is a shrine
that holds the relics of Saint Catherine of
Siena! I could not believe it! The
stained-glass windows from my youth
immediately came flashing through my
memory. Kneeling there before the
Altar, for the first time, I realized
Catherine was real. Since that day, I
have continued to grow in my
appreciation for the Communion of
Saints in Heaven! The Saints continually
intercede to the Father on our behalf.
The Saints not only bring us closer to
Christ through their example, but
through their intercession, we can
become more untied as a Church and to
Christ, the definitive Mediator. They are
constantly praying for us and with us in
hopes that we may one day enjoy with them the vision of God for all eternity. I am grateful that Saint Agnes, Saint
James the Lesser, and Saint Catherine of Siena guide me to school every day; however, much more importantly, the
Saints guide us all to Christ. It is important that we remain close to the Communion of Saints in Heaven! Together,
let us learn more about the Saints, let us read the stories of their lives, let us continue to ask for their intercession,
and let us follow their many different examples, which always point us to Our Holy Redeemer, Jesus Christ!
Saint Mary Magdalene, Saint Bridget of Sweden, Saint James the Great, and Saints Joachim & Anne, pray for us!

nosotros, y nos enviaron a convertirnos en hacedores de la Palabra (cf. Santiago I: 22);
Anthony Iaconis (1994–1995), El P. Michael Bartholomew (2006–2007), El P. Jacob
Esos no solo

— mediante la virtud y el don de la castidad, pues la castidad permite amar con un corazón recto e indiviso;
encontrar y realizar en todo la voluntad de Dios (cf Rm 12, 2; Col 1, 10);
de los insensatos” (Sb 15, 5);

SOWING
GOOD
SEED
Jesus explained to His
disciples, “He who sowed
good seed is the Son of
Man, the field is the world,
the good seed the children
of the kingdom. The weeds
are the children of the evil
one, and the enemy who
sows them is the devil. The
harvest is the end of the
age, and the harvesters are
the angels. Just as weeds
are collected and burned up
with fire, so it will be at
the end of the age.”
